Tenure-track assistant professor in computational neuroscience and/or cognition The Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester invites applications from outstanding early-career candidates in Computational Neuroscience and Cognition for a tenure-track assistant professorship. This position is part of a new cluster of faculty positions in Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and the Brain and Cognitive Sciences supported by the Simons Foundation. We seek to hire scholars who develop computational theories and models to deepen our understanding of the brain in real-world, complex, or naturalistic contexts, or to understand collective decision-making and communication in groups of individuals. Researchers who develop and test computational models across levels of representations (from the brain to the mind) are particularly welcome to apply. The department’s research in this area utilizes large-scale, high-resolution electrophysiology and neuroimaging of both individuals and groups, state-of-the-art augmented and virtual reality, and a wide range of methods to study behavior from active information seeking in the fovea, to interactive, naturalistic communication and the transmission of complex information across individuals, as well as the joint learning and coordination of group behavior and collective decision-making. Successful candidates are expected to develop a highly competitive research program that establishes collaborations within the department, especially within our cluster of cutting-edge experimentalists studying neural systems and behavior in naturalistic settings. Dear Colleague In 1995 Mainen and Sejnowski published a striking result showing neurons in mammalian neocortex are capable of producing precise, reliable spike trains in response to fluctuating inputs. This work inspired sustained inquiry into the role of spike timing in sensory, motor and cognitive processes, including learning and memory, as well as theoretical investigations into neural coding, plasticity, and the mechanisms of precise spike timing. In recognition of the 30th anniversary of this seminal paper, Biological Cybernetics invites submissions to a special article collection on the topic “Neuronal Spike Timing: Precision, Reliability, and the Neural Code from 1995-2025.” Whether you have contributed to past research in this area and would like to write a retrospective review, or if you are actively pursuing new research building on spike timing, we encourage you to submit an article to this collection. *NITMB is seeking early-career researchers who have interest in transforming biological research and inspiring new mathematical discoveries. * This opportunity is open to researchers who want to develop mathematical, theoretical, and computational approaches to study any area of biology. NITMB Fellows conduct independent research programs, in collaboration with NITMB faculty members or others outside the Institute, focused on developing new mathematics and statistics relevant to challenges in biology. Dear All, Please forward this announcement to your best and motivated master students: We are offering a Master’s internship co-supervised by Delphine Oudiette (DreamTeam, Paris Brain Institute) and Damien Depannemaecker (Institute of Systems Neuroscience, Aix-Marseille University) on the modeling of state transitions, in sleep and attention, using tools from dynamical systems theory. The project aims to develop and characterize a dynamical model of these transitions, fit it to empirical data (EEG, behavioral, and subjective measures), and perform model inversion to estimate individual parameters. The candidate should have a strong quantitative background (applied mathematics, physics, computer science, or computational neuroscience), solid programming skills (Python, Matlab, or equivalent), and an interest in modeling and data analysis. Hello! We are happy to announce our first workshop of the new academic year! This time we will teach you how to use the *Bonsai* reactive programming language. Many experiments require us to synchronize multiple data streams— from cameras, sensors, microscopes—precisely deliver stimuli, and, quite often, do everything in a *closed-loop* setting. The fact that different devices use different software doesn’t make this task easier. One of the best—and open—solutions to these challenges is *Bonsai*, a reactive programming language that allows you to collect data from multiple systems, from calcium imaging through sound recordings to sensors, and to control output devices—such as feeders, motors, or stimulus delivery systems—to build *closed-loop* paradigms. It is easy to learn, implement, and is robust. During our workshop, we will introduce the basic logic of Bonsai; cover loading and saving data; working with a camera to track animals; and the basics of closed-loop experiments. We will also cover using Arduino alongside Bonsai to control experimental equipment and to save data from your sensors. *Requirements:* A Windows computer and a webcam. Highlight Dissecting neuronal mechanisms underlying learning and memory through cutting-edge microscopy. 3. Introduction It is widely accepted that synaptic plasticity constitutes the cellular correlate of learning. Yet, synaptic plasticity alone is insufficient to fully account for learning. Other mechanisms, such as intrinsic plasticity of membrane excitability, have been shown to be necessary for memory formation. Still, it remains unclear how intrinsic plasticity contributes to memory encoding and alters cognitive processes. In this project, we will leverage the advanced voltage imaging in larval zebrafish to investigate how intrinsic plasticity reshapes neuronal behavior. 4. Your Job In this project, you will contribute to both engineering and neurobiology. First, you will help build a light-sheet microscope optimized for voltage imaging at the single-cell and subcellular level in live larval zebrafish (1). The development of this system will be supported by Dr. Emmanuel Marquez Legorreta↗, Dr. Ernest van der Wee↗, and the Biology Image Center↗ team. Once the microscope is established, you will use it to investigate the electrophysiological properties of cerebellar Purkinje cells with advanced voltage indicators such as Voltron2. The ultimate goal is to uncover how Purkinje cells alter their dendritic signaling and spiking characteristics under different sensory or chemogenetic conditioning paradigms, and to determine how these changes may be mediated through intrinsic plasticity or brain state. Your qualities We are looking for a collaborative and responsible new colleague who meets several or all of the following criteria: • You hold, or are about to complete, a Master’s degree in Biology or Engineering. In a program that requires two internships, students who have completed their first internship are also encouraged to apply! • Has an interdisciplinary background. Previous microscopy training is a strong asset. • Demonstrates a strong interest in, or prior experience with, neuroscience. • You bring enthusiasm for live imaging at single-cell and subcellular level in larval zebrafish. • Have programming skills or a strong willingness to learn them. • Speak and write proficient academic English. 6. LASCON 2026 offers an intensive four-week training program designed for graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and early-career researchers interested in applying computational and mathematical methods to the study of neurons and neural networks. The curriculum spans multiple scales of brain modeling—from biophysically detailed neurons to large-scale networks and theoretical frameworks of brain function and dysfunction—and covers topics such as extracellular field modeling, synaptic and structural plasticity, brain disease and brain state modeling, artificial intelligence, criticality in brain dynamics, consciousness, and brain–machine interfaces. The program combines *morning lectures* on theory, *afternoon tutorials* using leading simulation tools (NEURON, NEST, NetPyNE), and *evening group project work*, culminating in student project presentations. This 10th edition marks a special milestone: *20 years of LASCON*. Since its first edition in 2006, the school has become a recognized international initiative in computational neuroscience training, attracting students from Latin America and beyond. Doctoral position in Theoretical Biophysics (Deadline : 1st November 2025) We are seeking a doctoral student with a quantitative background. Ideally, the candidate should have a master degree in physics but other quantitative backgrounds will be considered. The researcher will be based in the Integrative Biophysics group at the University of Konstanz and Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour, located in Konstanz, Germany. The group focuses on a diverse set of theoretical biophysics problems. The doctoral project is a collaboration between the integrative biophysics research group and the research group of Prof. Ilya Nemenman at Emory University, Altanta, US. The doctoral student will have the opportunity to have research stays at Emory University. The project summary is as follows: *Project Title*: /Inferring dynamical interactions in social groups/ *Project Abstract*: Social interactions are one of the most foundational building blocks of group behaviors, shaping decision making strategies across ecologies. Social groups consist of small number of individuals in contrast with collectives that consist of large number of agents. Despite the importance of social groups as a building block of living systems, there is little understanding of mechanistic details of the nature of those social interactions and how they shape emergent social functional properties. This stands in contrast with physics of collectives, which usually focus on the dynamics of very large group of individuals and have been thoroughly studied. In an experimental sys-tem or in field observations tackling social behaviors, we do not know a priori the social forces, nature of those interactions and their dynamics. Recent advances in software and hardware allow us to track the behavior of multiple individuals over extended spatio-temporal scales. Thus it is crucial to develop methodologies to infer dynamical social interactions and social forces from experimental observations. This relates closely to work done inferring "social forces" from dusty plasmas. Recent theoretical work has developed an information theoretic approach to estimate intrinsic motivation, based on maximizing an agent's empowerment (defined as the mutual information between its past actions and future states). This approach can be used to study social behaviours, where individuals choose actions without an explicit reward signal. In this project, we are planning to apply this framework to infer and understand social behaviour of small animal groups specifically locusts, mice and marmosets monkeys offering not only a mechanistic insights into mechanisms of social organization but also make quantitative evolutionary comparison of social behaviours. *Relevant publications:* 1. We are recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher for an NIH-funded project investigating the neural circuit mechanisms of working memory decline in aging and Alzheimer’s disease. The postdoc will be based at Boston University in the laboratory of Dr. J. The project combines computational and empirical approaches, and the postdoc will develop large-scale spiking network models that incorporate biologically realistic perturbations such as myelin changes, synapse loss, and neuronal hyperexcitability. The position offers close interaction with experimental collaborators, opportunities to generate testable predictions, and strong support for publishing and presenting work internationally. Qualifications * PhD in computational neuroscience, physics, computer science, applied mathematics, or a related field. * Strong programming skills (Python; experience with simulation environments like Brian2, NEST, or NEURON a plus). * Background in neural network modeling, systems neuroscience, or dynamical systems. The Smith lab at the University of Minnesota is seeking a motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher to study the development of large-scale networks in the developing brain. Our lab employs optical approaches to study the mechanisms of cortical network formation in the developing brain. We have recently obtained funding to use wide-field and 2-photon optogenetics to investigate how perturbations of early network function impact development. Preferred candidates will have a Ph.D. or equivalent in neuroscience, biology, or related field, and experience in one or more of the following areas: multiphoton imaging, optogenetics, calcium imaging, *in vivo *electrophysiology, and / or analysis of large-scale datasets. This PhD programme is designed to immerse students in both experimental and theoretical thinking, providing a rigorous preparation for an interdisciplinary research career. Courses in the first year provide a comprehensive introduction to systems neuroscience, theoretical/computational neuroscience, and machine learning. The mission of CCN is to develop theories, models, and computational methods that deepen our knowledge of brain function. CCN takes a vertically-integrated “systems" neuroscience approach, building models that are motivated by fundamental principles, that are constrained by properties of neural circuits and responses, and that provide insights into perception, cognition and behavior. This cross-disciplinary approach not only leads to the design of new model-driven scientific experiments, but also encapsulates current functional descriptions of the brain that can spur the development of new engineered computational systems, especially in the realm of machine learning. In addition to carrying out an independent research program, FRFs are expected to: disseminate their results through scientific presentations, publications, and software release, collaborate with other members of the CCN or Flatiron Institute, and participate in the scientific life of the CCN and Flatiron Institute by attending seminars, colloquia, and group meetings. FRFs also have the opportunity to organize workshops and to mentor graduate and undergraduate students. FRF positions are two-year appointments and are generally renewed for a third year, contingent on performance. Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce this year’s application cycle for The Shanahan Foundation Fellowship at the Interface of Data and Neuroscience, a three-year fellowship program aiming to bring fresh perspectives from diverse technical backgrounds to the field of neuroscience. The program is co-hosted by the Allen Institute and the University of Washington, through the Computational Neuroscience Center. It is directed by Dr. Christof Koch at the Allen Institute and Dr. Adrienne Fairhall at UW. Fellows choose a co-mentor from each of the two institutions and will be employed by the Allen Institute as a Scientist (salary starting at $106,780 annually), with an affiliate postdoctoral appointment at UW. Accepted fellows propose their own research project(s), with access to the Allen Institute's wealth of structural, genomic, and functional data collected over the past 15 years (brain-map.org<https://brain-map.org>). We seek a researcher whose work combines the following two elements. First, the research is empirical and addresses substantive questions in human cognition (e.g., perception, memory, decision making). Second, the lens of analysis is informed by computational modeling including cognitive modeling, computational neuroscience or data science. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research uses behavioral experiments and AI approaches. This can include: (1) using AI as a model of human cognition to advance cognitive theory; (2) using cognitive tools and theories to scientifically understand neural networks; and (3) empirical work on human-AI interaction. AI models can include deep neural networks of vision or language, reinforcement learning systems, or others. UCI offers strong interdisciplinary collaborations across cognitive science, neuroscience, computer science, statistics, and engineering and is well-positioned to support research in areas such as robotics, neuroscience, and human-AI interaction. From molecular interactions to large-scale brain networks and symptom dynamics, contributions will address how non-linear, multi-scale dynamics shape cognition, behavior, and mental health. We invite original research, reviews, and methodological papers focusing on dynamic processes across scales, including neural network oscillations, brain-behavior interactions, symptom networks in psychiatry, and clinical time-series analyses. Emphasis is placed on integrative approaches that bridge basic neuroscience and clinical applications. Both new results and methodological articles will be considered. The Brain Networks Research and Development Group at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences (MPI CBS) in Leipzig, Germany, lead by Professor Thomas Knösche offers a PhD position for 3 years. The project is dedicated to elucidating the role of long-range brain connectivity in human language processing and will involve EEG and MRI experiments as well as realistic modeling of biological neural networks. It is a cooperation between the TU Berlin, the TU Chemnitz, the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the MPI-CBS, funded by the DFG. Candidates should hold a master (or equivalent) degree and have a background in engineering, computer science, neuroscience, physics, or similar, as well as a keen interest in neuroscience. Good computer programming skills (e.g., C++, Matlab, Python) are necessary. Some experience in EEG or MEG experimenting and data analysis would be beneficial, though not strictly required. Skills or interest in MRI processing (especially diffusion MRI), biophysical neural modeling, and machine learning are welcome. The Institute offers a world-leading research environment with outstanding facilities and research infrastructure (five MR scanners, including a 3T Connectom and 7T Terra.X; MEG; EEG TMS). The Brain Networks group is dedicated to the development of methods to investigate, model, and understand brain networks and how they give rise to human behavior and cognition. Current projects are centered around non-invasive brain stimulation of the motor system, sensory perception, the relation between human cognition and machine learning, and others. The position is part of an international collaborative effort (4 labs) to test and develop further computational models of episodic and spatial memory by combining human intracranial electrophysiology and computational models. Specifically, the project will explore computational/neural mechanisms underlying cognitive maps, spatial (and episodic) memory, and navigation. The candidate will have two main tasks: 1. develop new and improve existing models, 2. co-develop an analysis pipeline for human single units. Prerequisites are outstanding records in an area relevant to neuroscience. Traditional computational models perform well in artificial tasks but struggle to generalize to real-life ecological situations. In contrast, new deep learning models excel at processing real-world information and demonstrate cognitive abilities close to those of humans. However, these models are trained on impractically large datasets and use training protocols that are not cognitively feasible, which limits their ability to explain or predict human learning and cognitive development. This project aims to develop the first cognitively feasible learning agents—AI systems that learn language and cognition within constraints that mimic human development. Leveraging a unique dataset (the 1kD corpus)— continuous daily audio-visual recordings from 18 children’s first 1,000 days of life—we will train models directly on the ecologically valid, socially embedded experiences that shape children’s growth. Unlike large-scale industrial models, which depend on vast impersonal datasets, our approach emphasizes individual-centered, real-world input that captures the long-tail variability of human development. By replicating learning trajectories across multiple households, we will establish the first mechanistic framework for how natural input shapes children’s cognition. The project represents a bold shift from analyzing existing models to building new brain-inspired learning agents, directly addressing ecological validity and laying the foundation for a new generation of cognitive science. Short Bio: Uri Hasson grew up in Jerusalem. He studied philosophy and cognitive sciences at the Hebrew University as an undergrad. He completed his Ph.D. in Neurobiology at the Weizmann Institute in Israel and was a postdoctoral fellow at NYU before moving to Princeton. He is currently a Professor in the Psychology Department and the Neuroscience Institute at Princeton University. His research program aims to understand the neural basis of face-to-face, brain-to-brain, communication in real-world contexts, using big ECoG data and deep language models.
