Dear colleagues, We are excited to announce that registration and abstract submission are now open for the upcoming Champalimaud Research Symposium: *Neuro-Cybernetics at Scale*, organized jointly by Memming Park (Champalimaud), Guillaume Hennequin (Cambridge), and Shreya Saxena (Yale). We will explore how behavior emerges through complex feedback loops across neural circuits, bodies, and varied environments. The symposium draws inspiration from the recent advances in AI and machine learning, where scaling has unlocked unprecedented performance. We believe neuroscience may be approaching a similar inflection point (e.g. foundation model for neuroscience). Dear All, You are cordially invited to submit your contributions to the half-day workshop "Movement Matters: A Turing Test for Robot Interaction <https://activeself.de/movement-matters/>" (MoMa), which will be held as part of RO-MAN 2025 on August 29th in Eindhoven, Netherlands. This workshop examines how the Turing Test can be extended beyond language-based interaction to evaluate robotic intelligence through movement. The focus is on how physical behavior, such as navigation, approach strategies, and motion dynamics, can function as a basis for assessing agency, intentionality, and human-likeness in robots. We welcome submissions that investigate the role of non-verbal behavior in shaping user perception and that propose theoretical, empirical, or design-based approaches to movement as a testable dimension of intelligence. We will consider a novel test for candidate theories, the “participation criterion”: End-directedness of behavior entails that, in principle, it is distinguishable by measurement from one without end-directedness. But how can this criterion ever be satisfied by artificial agents? We will evaluate the possibility that end-directedness will show up as a local increase in unpredictability of system dynamics, which has the global effect of stochastically nudging the system toward aligning with the goal state. *BIO: *Dr. Tom Froese is an Associate Professor at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) in Japan, where he leads the Embodied Cognitive Science Unit (ECSU). Before 2019, he was a Professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where he led the 4E Cognition Group. Froese completed his PhD in Cognitive Science at the University of Sussex in the UK in 2010 and his MSc in Computer Science and Cybernetics at the University of Reading in 2004. Postdoc/PhD position in Computational Neuroscience in the Theory of Neural Circuits group at the Institute of Neuroinformatics under the supervision of Katharina Wilmes: We are looking for highly motivated Postdocs or PhD students, interested in computational neuroscience, specifically addressing questions concerning neural circuits underlying perception and learning. The perfect candidate has a strong background in math, physics or computer science (or equivalent), programming skills (python), and a strong interest in biological and neural systems. A background in computational neuroscience is ideal, but not mandatory. Research topic: Our brain maintains an internal model of the world, based on which it can make predictions about sensory information. These predictions are useful for perception and learning in the uncertain and changing environments in which we evolved. The link between high-level normative theories and cellular-level observations of prediction errors and representations under uncertainty is still missing. The lab uses computational and mathematical tools to model cortical circuits and neural networks on different scales. The environment: You'll become part of the Institute of Neuroinformatics (INI, UZH and ETH Zürich), a very collaborative and inspiring place, with many labs focusing on discovering the key principles underlying intelligent behaviour.
