Up to 6 PhD positions in Cognitive Neuroscience are available at SISSA, Trieste, starting October 2024. SISSA is an elite postgraduate research institution for Maths, Physics and Neuroscience, located in Trieste, Italy. SISSA operates in English, and its faculty and student community is diverse and strongly international. The Cognitive Neuroscience group (https://phdcns.sissa.it/) hosts 7 research labs that study the neuronal bases of time and magnitude processing, visual perception, motivation and intelligence, language and reading, tactile perception and learning, and neural computation. Our research is highly interdisciplinary; our approaches include behavioural, psychophysics, and neurophysiological experiments with humans and animals, as well as computational, statistical and mathematical models. These grants, which provide up to $1.5M/year for up to 5 years, are awarded to multidisciplinary teams from US institutions of higher education. Topic 3, Energy and Information Processing in Biological Organisms, aims to support investigations of relationships between energy consumption and information processing in biological organisms with a goal of identifying strategies that could have implications for human and computer performance in energy-constrained environments. The new department of Computing Sciences, created two years ago and in a phase of rapid expansion, is an interdisciplinary department with leading international researchers in various fields including theoretical computer science, machine learning theory, statistical physics modeling, natural language processing, computational neuroscience, as well as biomedical applications. Systems Vision Science Virtual Summer School & Symposium: June 19th – July 12th, 2024 -------------------------------- Applications are invited for a <https://summerschool.lizhaoping.org/virtual-systems-vision-science-summer-s…> virtual edition of <https://summerschool.lizhaoping.org/> the Systems Vision Science Summer School and Symposium that took place in Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tuebingen, Germany in August 2023. This year, the virtual edition enables students to attend from afar by formal lectures via Zoom and informal and social communications via a Slack channel. Systems Vision Science combines computational, behavioral, and neuroscience methods to discover functions and algorithms for vision in various brain regions and their implementations in neural circuits. This summer school is designed for everyone interested in gaining a systems level understanding of biological vision. We plan a coherent, graduate-level, syllabus on the integration of experimental data with theory and models. The syllabus content will be very similar to the edition in 2023, the learning format, the delivery, and social interactions will be adjusted to suit the virtual format. Experience or knowledge in (A) computational methods, (B) visual psychophysics, and (C) vision neuroscience, is not required. However, experience in at least one of (A), (B), and (C), and a readiness to learn, is expected. The Summer School will be followed by a Systems Vision Science Virtual Symposium on July 12th. I am opening three fully funded postdoctoral positions in computational neuroscience at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in Hamburg, Germany. We investigate how networks of neurons in the cerebral cortex encode, process and transmit information to generate behaviors such as sensation and decision-making. To address these issues, we develop and use information-theoretic and machine learning methods to study population coding, as well as neural network models to individuate mechanisms for neural information processing and generation of functions. Our laboratory enjoys extensive long-term international collaborations with experimental laboratories, including with Chris Harvey at Harvard Medical School, Wei- Lee at Boston Children’s Hospital, Tommaso Fellin and Alessandro Gozzi at IIT, Mriganka Sur at MIT, as well as collaborations with experimental laboratories in Hamburg (Andreas Engel, Tobias Donner, Ileana Hanganu-Opatz). The laboratory also offers a thriving, ambitious and well-funded research environment (with funds from the NIH Brain Initiative, the Simons Foundation, the European Union, the ERC). The lab provides ample opportunities for advanced training and for personal scientific growth. We seek candidates holding a PhD in a numerate or neuroscientific discipline, with a solid computational background and a keen interest in neuroscience. They must be highly motivated and creative individuals who want to work in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary research environment and be happy to interact with both experimental and theoretical neuroscientists. NeuroDataReHack 2024 July 8-12, 2024 Janelia Research Campus, Ashburn, Virginia, USA The goal of NeuroDataReHack is to train participants to generate new insights from existing neurophysiology data through secondary analysis. The DANDI Archive <http://dandiarchive.org/> now has 200+ neurophysiology datasets in the Neurodata Without Borders <http://nwb.org/> format spanning many species, brain areas, task types, and imaging modalities. Recently, the techniques for studying behaviour, along with those for monitoring and manipulating neural activity, have progressed rapidly. *NeuroBridges 2024* *A Mediterranean, Middle Eastern Summer School in Neuroscience* *Deadline to apply: April 1st, 2024* *NeuroBridges 2024* is a summer school which will take place between *September 15 and September 26, 2024* in Le Centre de Conferences Internationales de Cluny, France (CCIC) <https://streaklinks.com/B3KCp_jAQOMpwC7dQwRSV3xc/https%3A%2F%2Fcollegecluny…>. The school will provide an overview of theoretical and experimental frameworks used to study a variety of *decision making* processes. It will cover different model systems from rodents to humans and a plethora of decision making mechanisms. Another objective of Neurobridges is to bring together *Mediterranean and Middle Eastern scientists*, in order to promote scientific cooperation between young researchers from these countries. The organizers of NeuroBridges are convinced that such scientific collaborations can lead to personal relations, which eventually may alleviate the political distress in the Middle East. The school is intended for graduate students and postdocs, primarily, but not only, from the Middle East and the Mediterranean region, either working in their home countries or abroad.
