We are pleased to announce Visiting Scholars in Theoretical Sciences at OIST for a flexible term of 1 to 12 months as below. ***** As part of an initiative to develop a vibrant program in theoretical sciences, OIST invites applications for Visiting Scholars in the Theoretical Sciences. The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is a research institution with a Ph.D. program. Outstanding graduate students and faculty are being attracted internationally. OIST is beautifully situated on the tropical island of Okinawa, Japan. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a relevant field and be independent researchers, i.e., should have an academic standing equivalent to senior postdoc, junior group leader, or faculty member at a research-intensive institution. The position has a flexible term of 1 to 12 months taken continuously starting between October 2021 and March 2022 with a preference for longer-term visitors. The appointment may be taken while on leave or sabbatical from another university and comes with housing, research funds, and moving allowance. Successful candidates will be eligible to apply for support with salary, where this is necessary to facilitate the visit. No teaching duties come with the position. The Computational Neuroscience unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (https://www.oist.jp) Japan has been spearheading nanoscale stochastic modeling of astrocytes, neurons and synapses (https://groups.oist.jp/cnu) We have two postdoctoral positions open and Japan is finally issuing visa again. The selected candidates will build on previous work in modeling of cerebellar or hippocampal astrocytes, neurons and synapses using our STEPS software (http://steps.sourceforge.net) research project depending on experience and interests of the candidate. Previous experience in neural modeling required, preferentially as subject of PhD. Competences: A recent PhD in a relevant discipline such as neuroscience, molecular biology, biophysics or biochemistry. Experience in programming in Python. When coupled with planning/learning, human models enable robots to display intelligent interactive behavior. However, crafting good human models remains difficult. In this talk, we’ll discuss facets of human modeling, starting with our efforts in capturing human trust in the robot. We’ll discuss a perspective that views trust as function learning and the impact this has in multi-task scenarios. Next, we will cover MIRROR, a new approach to quickly learn human models that are useful for (communication) planning. MIRROR is inspired by social projection theory, which hypothesizes that humans use self-models to understand others. In a similar manner, MIRROR leverages robot self-models learned using RL to bootstrap human modeling. We will examine how MIRROR performs relative to state-of-the-art methods using simulations and a human-subjects study. We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to work in the area of computational motor neuroscience. Our research addresses fundamental questions on human motor control, with extensions to clinical applications and also human-robot interactions. The candidate is expected to participate in several lines of research, including projects on the human control of complex objects in healthy and clinical population, specifically stroke and autism, and the interrelation of timing in motor skills and perceptual tasks. We have several collaborators on these projects, including Pawan Sinha at MIT, Joo-Hyun Song at Brown University, and David Lin at Massachusetts General Hospital. The research is supported by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. The Action Lab has state-of-the-art experimental equipment, including 3D motion capture, three virtual reality set-ups, two robot manipulanda, force plates and wireless EMG. The past decade has seen rapid progress in experimental tools that now make it possible to monitor and manipulate brain circuits in unprecedented detail. This evolution presents challenges and opportunities for both experimentalists and theorists. Mathematical theory is instrumental in the emergence of theoretical insights and frameworks that can help guide experimental work and identify unifying principles of brain function. The aim of the one-week summer school will be to introduce students with a strong quantitative background (in mathematics, physics, computer science, and engineering) to the emerging field of theoretical and computational neuroscience. The distinguishing feature of CNeuro is the emphasis it places on the role of systematic mathematical theory for understanding the brain, in part by stressing the connections between neuroscience, statistics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. *Topic and format* Past editions of CNeuro have focused on theoretical approaches to neural dynamics and coding. Teams are given collections of video and pose data of interacting animals (mice, flies, or ant-beetle pairs), and asked to submit an embedding that captures animals' actions; embeddings are evaluated on a gauntlet of hidden tasks to judge their ability to capture human-defined behaviors. Ongoing projects focus on processes in individuals with and without psychopathology and address both basic and translational questions. Qualified candidates with basic science backgrounds are welcome, and training in applied science will be provided. For interested candidates, the labs provide opportunities to examine the functional neuroscience of decision-making and its disruption in depression, substance dependence, post-traumatic stress, personality disorders, and at-risk adolescents. The labs are located in the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion in Roanoke, VA, just off the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway. The FBRI provides full access to outstanding infrastructure, including four research-dedicated Siemens 3T scanners, facilities for in vitro electrochemistry, neurosurgical collaborations for in vivo electrochemistry, and high-throughput computing clusters. Successful candidates will play lead roles in highly collaborative multidisciplinary scientific efforts. The Barcelona summer school for Advanced Modelling of Behavior (BAMB! <http://www.bambschool.org>) teaches advanced techniques in model-based analysis of behavior (humans and other species) to cognitive and computational neuroscientists at PhD and early career levels. This will be achieved through structured lectures, talks, hands-on tutorials and group projects aimed at making knowledge obtained directly applicable to the participants' own research. We want the trainees to acquire both the conceptual bases and the technical skills that will enable them to pursue a full modelling approach on their own when they come back to their lab. The course is intended for PhD students and postdocs in cognitive and computational neuroscience with a solid background in computational/quantitative analysis to benefit maximally from the advanced training offered by the course. Proficiency in either Python or Matlab is also required. We seek a nice blend of experimentalists (cognitive psychology / neuroscience) and theoreticians (with or without experience in cognitive modeling). Scientists from underrepresented groups and countries are especially encouraged to apply. Dear Colleagues, We would like to announce CAMP@Bangalore 2022 from 23 July 2022 to 7 August 2022, in Bangalore, India. CAMP (Computational Approaches to Memory and Plasticity at NCBS, Bangalore) is a 16-day summer school where students will be trained in theoretical and computational modeling, pertaining to memory and plasticity in the brain, spanning different scales of space, time and complexity. This flavor of CAMP will focus on — Neuromodulation and Cell Diversity. This scientist will work with an international NeuroNex consortium (http://nxwm.io) studying the transcriptomic, cellular, and network basis of working memory. The project will incorporate analysis of multichannel neural data and computational models ranging from single neurons to spiking neural networks and machine learning algorithms. The researcher will work within a dynamic team and with data at multiple scales (transcriptomics, intracellular patch clamp, and extracellular spiking data). Research in this project utilizes a combination of large-scale numerical simulations, supervised/unsupervised learning, and analytical approaches. Prior experience with scientific computing languages (MATLAB, Julia, or Python) and/or low-level programming (C/C++) is preferred. Prior experience with computational modeling, signal processing, or random graph theory is also preferred. Western University offers an excellent research environment and support. On May 20 and 21, 2022, the 17th Annual Conference on Frontiers in Applied and Computational Mathematics (FACM '22) will be held at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark, New Jersey. The theme of FACM '22 Conference is "New Perspectives in Mathematical Biology." https://sites.google.com/njit.edu/facm2022/home Confirmed plenary speakers are: Carina Curto (Pennsylvania State University) Anita Layton (University of Waterloo) Grzegorz Rempala (Ohio State University) Corina Tarnita (Princeton University) FACM '22 will feature 4 minisymposia that cover a wide range of topics in math biology: (1) *learning paradigms in real and artificial neuronal networks,* (2) collective behavior in biological populations, (3) stochastic modeling at different scales, and (4) biofluids: machine learning and data-driven approaches. A poster session will run concurrently over the 2 days of the meeting. Pending NSF support, funds to cover all or part of the travel costs and local accommodation costs may be available for students, postdocs, and junior faculty. Applications by members of underrepresented groups, minorities and women are particularly encouraged. The NetPyNE GUI is available from a variety of resources: Neuroscience Gateway Portal (NSG); Open Source Brain (OSB) ; Human Brain Project (HBP) EBRAINS; and the NIH SPARC initiative. The NetPyNE source code is available on GitHub. More information is available on the NetPyNE website. During this dev session, I will give an overview of NetPyNE, go through an interactive demo using the NetPyNE GUI, describe my personal development workflow using virtual environments, and then go through two big dev projects I worked on: (1) documenting code inline and online using docstrings, Sphinx, Napoleon, and autodocsumm, and (2) separating and standardizing analysis and plotting. --------- The aim of these sessions is to stimulate discussion of the development practices and tools used by different teams to improve the software we use while also improving our knowledge of these practices and tools. We also hope to encourage more users of these tools to contribute to their development to ensure their longevity.
