The Centre for Systems Neuroscience at the University of Leicester, UK, offers a 3-years postdoc position to study single cell recordings in humans – performed in epileptic patients for curative surgery. The project will investigate concept cells (a.k.a. Jennifer Aniston neurons) – that means, neurons in the hippocampus and surrounding areas that selectively fire to specific concepts, like different pictures and the written or spoken name of a particular person (e.g. Quian Quiroga et al, Nature 2005; Quian Quiroga Nature Reviews Neuroscience 2012), which are involved in declarative memory functions. Simultaneous recordings from hundreds of channels are possible while animals perform complex behavioral tasks. The analysis of such massive and complex data becomes increasingly challenging. This advanced course aims at providing deeper training in state-of-the-art analysis approaches in systems neuroscience. The course is addressed to excellent master and PhD students and young researchers who are interested in learning advanced techniques in data analytics and in getting hands-on experience in the analysis of electrophysiological data. Postdoc(s) in Neural Reinforcement Learning / Computational Psychiatry (m/f/d) 100% Peter Dayan is looking to hire one or more postdocs (100%) to work in the areas of neural reinforcement learning, computational neuromodulation, and computational psychiatry. These positions will start in the Faculty of Science, Department of Computer Science, University of Tübingen, as part of an Alexander-von-Humboldt Professorship award. There are also targeted positions on the computational anatomy of cortico-striatal connections (funded by a collaborative NIH grant with Professor Suzanne Haber) and with the International Brain Lab (a large collaboration with 20 other investigators, funded by the Simons Foundation). Peter Dayan has an affiliation with the University of Tübingen and the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics and collaboration is expected. The salary will be paid in accordance with the collective agreement for the public sector (salary at E13 TV-L, commensurate to experience and qualifications). PhD position: Machine learning to record and enhance sleep and lucid dreaming

Hi, Arenar B.V. and the Donders Institute offer a joint PhD position combining data science/AI and wearable EEG technology with sleep/dream research. In this project, the wearable sleep EEG headband iBand+ will be further developed and applied in several experimental studies. First, we will develop automatic sleep stage detection algorithms using machine learning strategies. We will then implement closed-loop acoustic stimulation procedures to enhance sleep slow oscillations to improve deep sleep. We will further develop combined acoustic and visual stimulation procedures which will allow to enhance self-awareness during sleep (i.e. lucid dreaming) and subsequent mood in the morning. The validity and efficacy of these procedures will be tested experimentally in large longitudinal studies in naturalistic home-based settings. The successful candidate will be centrally involved in the development, will lead different research projects within this general framework; will be closely involved in daily supervision of MSc students assisting the project; and will participate in the vibrant Donders Graduate School. The Malerba Lab at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute Battelle Center for Mathematical Medicine in Columbus, Ohio is looking for a new Research Associate. The lab focuses on brain rhythms, especially during sleep, and their role in cognition (memory and motor skills). We are looking for a detail-oriented, adaptable and curious mind, who has graduate-level training and at least one year of experience working in a research lab. The position (initially for one year, with possible extension tied to lab funding) will be centered on high-level quantitative EEG analysis and simulations of neural network dynamics related to ongoing research projects. Demonstrated proficiency in programming (Matlab and python) is required, and so is interest in how brain dynamics is tied to behavior. Some neuroscience training is desirable. A small part of the position will be to screen and coordinate research subjects for participation to ongoing studies, hence timeliness and people skills are necessary. The Research Institute at NCH is a collaborative interdisciplinary environment, that strives to apply the most modern knowledge to challenging questions with high impact. Job announcement: We are looking for a computational neuroscience research assistant to join my newly formed lab at the DZNE in Berlin. The qualification level for this position is a Bachelor in neuroscience, data science, bioinformatics or similar qualifications in another related field. The requirements are some basic knowledge of neuroscience and proficiency in Matlab and/or Python. My lab will be doing electrophysiology recordings in freely behaving mice in the field of neurodegeneration. Spiking and local field potential data will be the main focus of analysis. This is a 1year position (until end of July 2021) to help the team with analysis of tetrode and silicon probe recordings from awake, freely moving mice. Although the position is purely computational it will give the opportunity to closely work with the experimental side of the lab and some training can be provided if it is of interest to the potential candidate. *Postdoc and PhD positions in EU project on motor control and movement augmentation* Bernstein Center, University of Freiburg NEXT lab, Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma Department of Bioengineering, Imperial College London Multiple postdoc and PhD positions are available in the labs of Carsten Mehring (University of Freiburg), Domenico Formica and Giovanni di Pino (Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma) as well as Dario Farina and Etienne Burdet (Imperial College London), on motor control and movement augmentation, in the context of the EU project NIMA. The NIMA project aims to develop body, muscle and neural interfaces for controlling additional degrees-of-freedom of supernumerary limbs, devices or computers independently from movements of the natural limbs. We have formed a team of leading experts in neuroscience, neurotechnology, human-machine interfaces, robotics, and ethics from various institutions across Europe (University of Freiburg, Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, Sorbonne Université, Tecnalia Foundation, Imperial College London) to accomplish the following objectives: 1) Pushing the borders of technology by creating non-invasive interfaces with multimodal sensory feedback that will allow effortless control of multiple limbs or objects; 2) Understanding the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying movement augmentation, how it can be functionally embodied and how this can be facilitated by multimodal feedback, by combining neuromodulation, computational modelling and behavioural experiments; 3) Applying movement augmentation to extend human capacities and preparing the ground for exploitation, using different testbeds; 4) Evaluating the ethical and safety aspects of movement augmentation. (my apologies for cross-posting) Dear colleagues, The Vienna Cognitive Science Hub is looking for a Tenure-Track Professorship in Cognitive Neuroscience of brain-microbiome interaction. The application deadline is 23.09.2020. The candidate for the tenure track position should have a strong focus on the translational and integrative potential of human cognitive neuroscience, at the interface of (social) brain, cognition, their disorders, and the microbiome. Research should be building upon a strong conceptual framework and interdisciplinarity. The methodological approach should focus on the interplay between neuro-cognitive processes and neural codes, and their relation to biological regulation systems driven by the microbiome, in humans. Thematically, the focus should be on basic mechanistic research in the domains of (social) emotion and cognition, as well as their disorders, preferentially but not necessarily on topics such as social interaction, affiliation, or learning and memory. While basic in nature, the research should hold potential to advance the translational understanding of mental and cognitive disorders, such as depression and autism, or of aging-related diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, or Frontotemporal Dementia, respectively. The position provides excellent opportunities to strengthen cross-institutional collaborative initiatives within the domain of neuroscience and microbiome research.
