Postdoc at the University of Leicester to work on human single cell recordings

The Centre for Systems Neuroscience at the University of Leicester, UK, offers a 3-years postdoc position to study single cell recordings in humans – performed in epileptic patients for curative surgery. The project will investigate concept cells (a.k.a. Jennifer Aniston neurons) – that means, neurons in the hippocampus and surrounding areas that selectively fire to specific concepts, like different pictures and the written or spoken name of a particular person (e.g. Quian Quiroga et al, Nature 2005; Quian Quiroga Nature Reviews Neuroscience 2012), which are involved in declarative memory functions. PhD position: Machine learning to record and enhance sleep and lucid dreaming

Hi, Arenar B.V. and the Donders Institute offer a joint PhD position combining data science/AI and wearable EEG technology with sleep/dream research. In this project, the wearable sleep EEG headband iBand+ will be further developed and applied in several experimental studies. First, we will develop automatic sleep stage detection algorithms using machine learning strategies. We will then implement closed-loop acoustic stimulation procedures to enhance sleep slow oscillations to improve deep sleep. We will further develop combined acoustic and visual stimulation procedures which will allow to enhance self-awareness during sleep (i.e. lucid dreaming) and subsequent mood in the morning. The validity and efficacy of these procedures will be tested experimentally in large longitudinal studies in naturalistic home-based settings. The successful candidate will be centrally involved in the development, will lead different research projects within this general framework; will be closely involved in daily supervision of MSc students assisting the project; and will participate in the vibrant Donders Graduate School. The Lab of Jerry Chen at Boston University is hiring a Data Scientist to be involved in several multi-year BRAIN Initiative related NIH and NSF funded projects. These projects focus on understanding cortical computation during behavior by combining large-scale population recordings, anatomical reconstructions, and transcriptional profiling as well as developing tools for large-scale and high-speed imaging of neuronal populations. This person will be involved in help to analyze experimental data, developing software tools to aid in the data analysis, and helping with data infrastructure and management. Specific Projects include: 1. Analysis of dense electron microscope reconstructions of neuronal connectivity (ie. Connectomics) 2. Establishing pipeline for image analysis for in situ sequencing of gene expression 3. Establishing pipeline for automated behavioral training and analysis. 4. Visualization and analysis of population imaging data across multiple brain areas during behavior. This person will be jointly involved and mentored by personnel from the Hariri Institute's Software & Application Innovation Lab (SAIL), a center with expertise in cutting-edge computational and data-driven research with tangible and direct impacts on academic research, public service, and industry partners in healthcare, finance, and technology. Post doc position in ERC-funded project "Action Selection under Threat", involving VR, behavioural experiments and modelling, wearable magnetoencephalography Location: University College London (UK), Institute of Neurology, Max-Planck/UCL Centre for Computational Psychiatry and Ageing Research and Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging Project lead: Dominik R Bach is a principal research fellow at UCL The project will look at the cognitive-computational control of motor behaviour under acute, immediate threat. We will set up an immersive virtual reality (VR) environment, in which people can move to avoid various threats. We will record people's behaviour using optical and video tracking, and use machine-learning to structure motor trajectories. Scenarios will then be tweaked to expose limitations of the psychological or computational mechanisms that govern behaviour. Finally, we will use wearable magnetoencephalography (OPMs) at the WCHN to investigate the neural basis of these algorithms. We are currently looking for candidates with a PhD in cognitive-computational (neuro)science, applied machine-learning, biomechanics, motor science, or a quantitative field of psychology (e.g. vision, perception, behavioural economics), or similar.
