The INCF Infrastructure Committee (IC) - which provides recommendations for the strategic direction of INCF's infrastructure strategy and development - has a preprint available in arXiv. The preprint, titled *Recommendations for repositories and scientific gateways from a neuroscience perspective*, is a set of recommendations that can apply to a wide and diverse range of digital services, both repositories and science gateways, for data as well as software. These recommendations have neurosciences as their primary use case but are often general. Overview The Shanahan Foundation Fellowship at the Interface of Data and Neuroscience is a three-year fellowship program that aims to: · Integrate data scientists in neuroscience research · Challenge traditional approaches to neuroscience · Provide multidisciplinary, multi-organizational co-mentorship · Provide a network and community · Support career development in data science The fellowship is co-hosted by the Allen Institute and the University of Washington (through the eScience Institute and the Computational Neuroscience Center) and is directed by Dr. Christof Koch at the Allen Institute. Neuroscience needs data scientists. The brain represents one of the most complex challenges facing science today. And now with advances in our methods to study the brain—Neuropixel probes that can record from 1000 neurons at once, growing consensus on data standards across laboratories—the field is flooded with data that needs interpretation. The skills of data scientists are essential to springboard the field to the next stage of discoveries. Towards that end, the Shanahan Foundation Fellowship was created to bring fresh perspectives into the field, encouraging data scientists from outside neuroscience to come and work with leading investigators at the Allen Institute and UW. The Allen Institute is unique in its infrastructure and pipeline that enables the production of standardized, reproducible data on the brain (as evidenced by our vast data banks <http://www.brain-map.org/>). Together with our collaborators at the UW computational Neuroscience Center and eScience Institute, we provide data scientists with the ideal opportunity and resources to mine for novel insights and discoveries. Details You do not need experience in neuroscience to apply. The goal of the fellowship is to provide opportunities to non-traditional applicants who would not typically be funded by the typical postdoctoral fellowships in neuroscience. The fellowship has been purposefully designed to give fellows the time and mentorship to get up to speed in a new field and new data collection techniques and methods. Fellows will be employed by the Allen Institute as either a Scientist I or a Scientist II (with a matching salary) and will receive an affiliate postdoctoral appointment at UW. During the three-year fellowship, fellows will identify a mentor at the Allen Institute, where the fellows will be based. Fellows will select a co-mentor at the University of Washington who will provide additional guidance on a project designed by the fellow, focused on quantitative analysis of neuroscience data available through the Allen Institute’s vast data banks <http://www.brain-map.org/> – ranging from molecular, genomic, transcriptional, physiological, morphological, anatomical and functional whole-brain level in the brains of mice, non-human primates and humans – or through ongoing laboratory work. Each fellow will have the opportunity to mentor a fully-funded UW undergraduate or postbaccalaureate research assistant who helps with their research for 3-12 months. Fellows will participate in the postdoctoral career development program at the University’s e-Science Institute and the UW Computational Neuroscience Center. The eSciences Institute offers regular workshops on key topics including cloud computing, python and reproducibility. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must be data scientists in a broad sense, with a Ph.D. in a quantitative field such as computer science, statistics, electrical engineering, physics, mathematics or biology with a background in statistical, computational and machine learning methods. Ph.D.’s should have been awarded in the last 3 years. One goal of the fellowship is to build a network of collaborators, as such, priority will be given to applicants who are not currently postdoctoral fellows or scientists at the University of Washington or the Allen Institute. Founded by Adrienne Fairhall and Christof Koch, this annual two-week course is co-hosted by the Allen Institute MindScope Program and the Computational Neuroscience Center at the University of Washington. The Summer Workshop on the Dynamic Brain is an intensive, project-based residential course with a focus on the neurobiology of sensory processing, coding, and neural population dynamics. This program is intended for researchers at the graduate and postdoctoral level with an interest in developing the intersection of their scientific knowledge and their computational skills. A postdoctoral position will become available in the very near future in the Canavier computational neuroscience lab at LSU Health Science Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. Our lab focuses on modeling single neurons and networks in a synergistic loop with experimental collaborators Jochen Roeper, John White and Sonia Gasparini. We are interested in how oscillations are generated and how networks synchronize, and in how the intrinsic properties of neurons contribute to how they integrate their inputs. A quantitative background in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science or a related field coupled with a passion for applying quantitative techniques and theory to neuroscience is required. We are primarily interested in 1) theta and gamma oscillations in the hippocampus and 2) in the dopamine neurons of the basal ganglia. Our Independence Awards programs promote talented early-career scientists by facilitating their transition to research independence and providing grant funding at the start of their professorships. We are offering such awards through three of our programs: the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI), the Simons Collaboration on the Global Brain (SCGB) and the Simons Collaboration on Plasticity and the Aging Brain (SCPAB). The Brascamp Lab for Visual Neuroscience at Michigan State University is seeking a Research Associate (postdoc). The Research Associate will be researching the neural basis of conscious vision, as part of a multi-site project funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation and performed at Michigan State University in collaboration with researchers at NYU, UC Irvine, and Boston University (shorturl.at/ackpE<http://shorturl.at/ackpE>). The work involves visual psychophysics and functional neuroimaging. The Brascamp Lab is located within the Department of Psychology and is a part of the Department's Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience group, which provides an excellent research and training environment with faculty expertise covering a broad range of topics in perception and cognitive psychology. The Research Associate will be stationed at MSU, and the project may require a limited time spent in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, for data acquisition. This is initially a one-year position with the possibility of extension. Minimum Requirements include a Ph.D. in vision science, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, or a related field. The Interdisciplinary College (IK) is an annual, intense spring school which offers a dense state-of-the-art course program in neurobiology, neural computation, cognitive science/psychology, artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and philosophy. It is aimed at students, postgraduates and researchers from academia and industry. By combining humanities, science and technology, the IK endeavours to intensify dialogue between the various disciplines. Courses include up-to-date introductions to the main fields of the IK, as well as an in-depth treatment of the focus topic, which this year is “flexibility”. We will discuss topics ranging from mental flexibility, to flexibility of the nervous system, to physical flexibility with dance, to science communication to viewpoint flexibility through Tibetan monastic debate techniques. *Position: *Faculty Director, Sapien Labs Center for the Human Brain and Mind at Krea University *About the Centre:* Krea University aims to establish, in partnership with Sapien Labs, a center for research and learning related to the human brain and mind. The overall mission of the centre is to enable a cross-disciplinary ecosystem that helps understand the nature and relationship of the brain and mind, its evolution and diversity across humanity and the environmental and social determinants of our cognitive and mental health. Among the main goals, the centre envisages to: (1) Assist in the creation of an all India collaborative network to enable practical applications of insights; (2) Build a core program of data acquisition across a large cross-section of people across their lifespan; (3) Develop a substantial analytical capability for large-scale insights; (4) Develop a generation of research scholars with a broad cross-disciplinary perspective; (5) Foster research and develop new curriculum across disciplines; (5) Communicate scientific research findings on brain development widely available to diverse constituencies; (6) Promote public awareness and impact policy by discussing the implications of brain/mind research in the fields of education, health, law, parenting, and mental health, and enhance the field of developmental cognitive neuroscience. One of the key flagship activities of the centre will be the India host of “The Human Brain Diversity” initiative, a big data project of Sapien Labs that measures brain activity on a large scale across the globe using EEG, along with various other measures of life experience, mental and cognitive outcomes and other physiological and metabolic measures. The centre is anticipated to have synergistic collaborations across various entities within the Krea ecosystem. *The Role:* The Faculty Director will guide and build the research program at the Sapien Labs Center for Human Brain and Mind at Krea University in collaboration with key research advisors at the centre. He/she will hold a faculty position at Krea University, and will hold this responsibility along with their teaching/research work. The Faculty Director will also be responsible for fostering synergies among faculty members, students, post-docs, and the broader academic community at Krea University, along with promoting the centre’s research within wider academic networks in India and abroad. Dear all, ---- please forward this call to potentially interested mentors in your network --- INCF will apply to be a mentor organization in Google Summer of Code <https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com> for the 12th time running. We are calling for open source software development project ideas with some sort of *neuro connection* - fixes or extensions to big/broadly applicable or small/niche tools used by neuroscience researchers, efforts and initiatives in the broad field of computational neuroscience. If your project supports or implements INCF endorsed standards or best practices <https://www.incf.org/resources/sbps>, we especially encourage you to apply. We are also* looking for mentors who are willing to take on student-proposed projects *that fit their interests. As you may have seen earlier this year, Google has announced some changes to the GSoC program for 2022: - Candidate *eligibility* will widen, the only requirement is that candidates are newcomers to open source (instead of "GSoC student", the official term Google uses is now "GSoC contributor"). - The project *effort* can be half-time or full-time - 175 or 350 hours. Everyone submitting at least two project ideas will be asked to *include both half-time and full-time projects*. - Project end dates can be extended (but not moved earlier), at the discretion of the org admin. To keep the administration manageable, *we will only accept projects initially planned for a 12 week duration*. Extensions during the program period will be made on a case-by-case basis. Also, the usual reminder: there is no guarantee that INCF will be accepted as a mentoring organization this year; Google announces the accepted organizations sometime in March. Please be clear with this in your communication with students. The timeline will be similar to the years before, but the dates are not yet set. At the University of Göttingen, a new Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1528 "Cognition of Interaction" will be established with funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG). Prior experience with predictive coding theory and experience with the application of information theory to biological data are a plus. Many lines of evidence have suggested the cortico-striato-nigro-thalamo-cortical circuitry plays a major role in motor learning and control. This circuitry has also been investigated for its causal role in the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegenerative diseases are often associated with movement disorders and neuronal dysfunction in degenerated brain structures, such as the striatum in Huntington’s disease and dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta in Parkinson's disease. Degeneration fundamentally changes the dynamics of local neuronal circuits, and these changes then propagate through the structural connectome of whole brain circuitry, eventually altering global brain dynamics. However, our current understanding of these system dynamics in the cortico-striato-nigro-thalamo-cortical circuitry remains rudimentary. Hence, theoretical studies about critical system variables and computational principles of this circuitry, constrained by recordings throughout, will shed new light on causes of motor dysfunction and neurodegenerative diseases. This Research Topic of Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience aims to bring together recent advances in theoretical modeling of cortico-striato-nigro-thalamo-cortical network and experimental observations. Below are the details of the project ( https://www.ab.mpg.de/426580/Couzin-Fuch_El-Hady ): Foraging is a universal, evolutionary conserved, behavior as animals in nature forage in groups across large spaces looking for resources to satisfy their energetic needs. To date, laboratory experiments have been constrained to animals foraging in small spaces and in small groups. There is an increasing evidence that both neural and behavioral dynamics, however, are principally different in natural spatial scales. The project aims to investigate basic principles underlying foraging decisions in large-scale dynamic environments, that mimic natural habitats. We will focus on two very different model organisms, each exhibits different adaptations to foraging under conditions of considerable uncertainty: swarm-forming locusts and rats. The experiments will be performed at the imaging hangar in the visual computing of collective building at Konstanz University. The imaging hangar is the largest indoor animal imaging facility in the world, offering the opportunity to perform foraging experiments at an unprecedented scale. Using patch foraging as a quintessential behavioral paradigm, and a combination of high throughput continuous video tracking and quantitative modeling approaches, we aim to elucidate how foraging strategies are updated in a changing social and physical world. *Title*: Neuro-inspired macroscale models of electrical stimulation-induced changes in neuroplasticity *Context*. Epilepsy refers to a neurological disorder that affects about 1% of the general population. Recent findings indicate that non-invasive brain transcranial current stimulation (tCS) is safe and of therapeutic promise in epilepsy. However, it is not yet indicated as a standard treatment due to major scientific limitations: unknown mechanisms of action, insufficient account for patient-specific factors, poor understanding of short- and long-term effects. The ambition of the GALVANI Project (ERC-SyG 2019; 2020-26) is to transform the care of a large fraction of patients living with drug-resistant epilepsies by solving a fundamental problem: to efficiently target and control large-scale epileptic brain networks with tCS-induced neuromodulatory weak electric fields ( https://www.galvani-lab.eu/) *Rationale*. Neuroplasticity refers to a wide ensemble of brain changes at cellular and network level that result from learning, practice, environmental influences, etc. In the normal brain, neuroplasticity is physiological process that allows for acquisition of new competences for instance. In the epileptic brain, neuroplasticity is a pathological process which alters the balance between excitation and inhibition giving rise to epileptic seizures. Neuroplastic changes may occur at different time scales (short and long) and may potentiate or, on the opposite, depress neuronal activity generated by brain circuits. Electrical stimulation (supra-threshold) and neuromodulation (sub-threshold) are two different methods that can be used to alter brain plasticity in order to lower hyperexcitability and subsequently decrease the occurrence of epileptiform events. *Objective*. This research focuses on neuromodulation. The objective of the proposed PhD position is to design neuroinspired macroscale models that will account for immediate (acute) and lasting (short- or long-term) effects of neuromodulatory weak electric fields, which remain elusive to some extent. *Methods*. After deep bibliographic review, biomathematical models to be developed will combine neurophysiological models of neuronal populations with mechanisms of action induced by weak electric fields on neuronal assemblies, typically on synaptic connectivity and firing rates. They will provide a unique framework to clarify and optimize the effects of dynamic E-fields induced by stimulation. They will be based on already-existing macroscale computational models which allow for simulation of epileptic activity (interictal spikes, ictal activity) generated by large-scale networks, as observed in human epilepsies. An issue to be solved is the translation from stimulation-induced short- and long-term effects at cellular level into average effects at population level. Optimization methods will be developed for identifying “therapeutic” neuromodulation parameters. Models will use the Neural Mass Model formalism (NMMs). They will be developed in Python. And now with advances in our methods to study the brain—Neuropixel probes that can record from 1000 neurons at once, growing consensus on data standards across laboratories—the field is flooded with data that needs interpretation. The skills of data scientists are essential to springboard the field to the next stage of discoveries. Towards that end, the Shanahan Foundation Fellowship was created to bring fresh perspectives into the field, encouraging data scientists from outside neuroscience to come and work with leading investigators at the Allen Institute and UW. The Allen Institute is unique in its infrastructure and pipeline that enables the production of standardized, reproducible data on the brain (as evidenced by our vast *data banks* <http://www.brain-map.org/>*)*. Together with our collaborators at the UW computational Neuroscience Center and eScience Institute, we provide data scientists with the ideal opportunity and resources to mine for novel insights and discoveries. Details *You do not need experience in neuroscience to apply. *The goal of the fellowship is to provide opportunities to non-traditional applicants who would not typically be funded by the typical postdoctoral fellowships in neuroscience. The fellowship has been purposefully designed to give fellows the time and mentorship to get up to speed in a new field and new data collection techniques and methods*.* Fellows will be employed by the Allen Institute as either a Scientist I or a Scientist II (with a matching salary) and will receive an affiliate postdoctoral appointment at UW. During the three-year fellowship, fellows will identify a mentor at the Allen Institute, where the fellows will be based. Fellows will select a co-mentor at the University of Washington who will provide additional guidance on a project designed by the fellow, focused on quantitative analysis of neuroscience data available through the Allen Institute’s vast data banks <http://www.brain-map.org/> – ranging from molecular, genomic, transcriptional, physiological, morphological, anatomical and functional whole-brain level in the brains of mice, non-human primates and humans – or through ongoing laboratory work. Each fellow will have the opportunity to mentor a fully-funded UW undergraduate or postbaccalaureate research assistant who helps with their research for 3-12 months. Fellows will participate in the postdoctoral career development program at the University’s *e-Science Institute* and the *UW Computational Neuroscience Center*. Software Engineer position for International Brain Laboratory

The International Brain Laboratory SOFTWARE ENGINEER <https://academic.careers.columbia.edu/#/85586> will work closely with our scientists to develop and deploy software and electronic hardware for experiment control, collection, storage, and data analysis. The experiments make use of complex control systems including video, audio, and fluidics, the data are processed by sophisticated algorithms including GPU-based deep networks, and then transferred automatically to a central database. The successful candidate will interface with scientists in our member laboratories (located in London, Lisbon, Geneva, Paris, New York City, Long Island, Princeton, San Francisco, and Ashburn VA) and with the core software development team based in Lisbon, to support experiments and ensure data is of high quality. The ideal candidate would have extensive experience with Linux, Python, Arduino systems, electronics, team programming, quality assurance, web design, and system administration. A flexible attitude, the ability to quickly adapt to new situations and learn new systems, and to work independently as part of a geographically distributed team, are essential. Experience with scientific research, networking, parallel computing, or relational databases would also be desirable. As this is a distributed collaboration, the candidate should be prepared to travel to all partner sites, with a home base in Lisbon, London or New York. Numerous experimental datasets show that the shared variability can be well described by a small number of latent variables, indicating coordinated trial-to-trial fluctuations within the population. Besides, cortical areas are connected through long-range excitatory projections, and it has been shown that there exists a communication subspace between connected but distinct brain areas that predicts spiking activity in a downstream area using upstream activity. However, little is known about the effect of neuronal dynamics on interactions between brain areas. Using a layered spiking network with within- and between-layer spatially structured connectivity, we show that pattern formation decreases within-area dimensionality similarly when spatio-temporal patterns emerge within a population or when they are inherited from a connected population. Yet, the fidelity of communication from an upstream to a downstream area, as estimated by a linear reduced-rank regression measure, is affected by the origin of pattern formation. Specifically, downstream activity is poorly predicted by upstream activity when spatio-temporal patterns emerge downstream, while it is particularly well predicted when shared fluctuations are mostly inherited from the upstream area. Interestingly, examination of spiking activity reveals that, even in the scenario with apparent disrupted communication, the downstream area is effectively driven by upstream activity, as expected from the strong feedforward connection strengths between layers. A mismatch in within-area dimensionality between upstream and downstream areas appears to underlie the seemingly weak communication. These results expose the limitations of linear measures when analyzing the flow of information in brain circuits with diverse neuronal dynamics. *Please note that this meeting is open to all neuroscience postdocs and PhD students, regardless of location or SCGB affiliation (sorry, no PIs). *After Q&A with the speaker, we will open breakout rooms for anyone interested in staying to chat, network, or further discuss the talk. This position involves studies focused on analyzing recordings of population spiking activity captured from the human cortex in awake participants with drug resistant epilepsy who are receiving intracranial EEG (iEEG) electrodes to monitor seizure activity. Single unit spiking activity from populations of neurons are captured through implanted microelectrode arrays. Post-doctoral fellows will join a laboratory aimed at understanding the neural mechanisms that underlie human episodic memory formation and decision making.
