Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UMass Boston A postdoctoral fellow position is available in the Brain Stimulation & Simulation Lab <https://www1.coe.neu.edu/%7Erampersad/index.html>, directed by Dr. Sumientra Rampersad, in the Department of Physics at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Our lab focuses on investigating electromagnetic brain stimulation through computational methods and experiments with healthy volunteers. This position is funded by a newly awarded 5-year NIH R01 <https://reporter.nih.gov/project-details/10719222> grant with the goal to investigate a novel form of brain stimulation called transcranial temporal interference stimulation (TIS) and to optimize and translate it into an effective and efficient neuromodulation method for academic research and clinical practice. The fellow will develop novel optimization methods for high-density TIS and supervise a PhD student who will conduct simulations and optimizations using finite element modeling. The goal is to provide noninvasive and spatially specific treatment options to patients with brain disorders resistant to existing approaches. You will join a multidisciplinary team with expertise in computational modeling and optimization, human and primate electrophysiology, cellular and systems neuroscience, and biomedical engineering. You will also have the opportunity to work on other cutting-edge projects involving several brain stimulation methods including tCS, TMS, ECoG, sEEG and TTF (see lab website <https://www1.coe.neu.edu/%7Erampersad/index.html> for examples). Our collaborators at Northeastern University, the University of Utah, Harvard University, MGH, and the University of Washington, provide us access to specialized software and unique clinical data. The project aims to create the next-gen humanoid robots with efficient computation, high cognition and autonomy, by synergistically combining interdisciplinary research development in neurophysiology, psychology, machine intelligence, cognitive mechatronics, neuromorphic engineering, and humanoid robotics. The PRIMI project seeks to create more capable interactive robots with advanced abilities, able to provide innovative and personalised services. Prototypes will be used in stroke rehabilitation studies. The post-doc will work with Dr. Michele Allegra, but also in close contact with Prof. Dal Maschio’s Lab (Department of Biomedical Sciences, Unipd) and in collaboration with Dr. Pietro Rotondo (Department of Mathematical, Physical and Information Sciences, University of Parma). The post-doc will combine data analysis and modeling to investigate low-dimensional manifolds in neural activity, comparing real data from zebrafish and computational models based on artificial neural networks (a more detailed description of the project is provided below). The focus is on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a rare neurodegenerative disease for which no efficient treatment exists. A particular goal is to test the possibility of stratifying ALS patients in subtypes with slow versus fast disease progression. It is based on a dataset of 30 ALS patients and matched controls, acquired on 7T and 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, which is currently being extended. Specifically, this dataset involves advanced MRI techniques that are promising for neurodegenerative diseases: quantitative and sodium MRI modalities, in addition to usual structural and functional MRI. We thus plan to build a multimodal prediction pipeline such as to test the combination of distinct types of MRI data (graph/network fusion) for clinical prediction. It also includes an international collaboration and aims to compare ALS datasets acquired in different centers. The position lies at the intersection between clinical research in a hospital and a neuroscience laboratory, aiming to bridge the different research cultures from both sides. Hi all, We are offering one postdoc position on self-organized network modelling at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics in Bilbao (Basque Country, Spain) under the supervision of MIguel Aguilera. DETAILS: **Postdoctoral Fellow on open-ended, self-organized, bio-inspired networks** Topics: One of the outstanding challenges in modelling living and cognitive systems is to capture their ability to continuously adapt and develop. Our behavioural responses are not fixed but driven instead by a complex ecology, composed of myriads of fluid and inconspicuous neurodynamical patterns that have slowly grown on us. AI models like neural networks can capture complex behaviours, but often this open-ended, liquid and ongoing reconfiguration is incredibly challenging to reproduce with static topologies. In contrast, liquid neural networks (or 'liquid brains') are a widespread class of networks with a particular feature: nodes (which may represent 'neurons' or 'agents' and typically all share identical rules) not only process information from neighbour nodes, but they also dynamically modify their network connections, e.g. by moving in space. These networks show how neural-like processing typically associated with static physiological networks can also emerge from fluid collective interaction, dynamically exploring configuration spaces beyond standard connection weight changes. Examples of this kind of model include collective decision-making and fluctuations in ant colonies or idiotypic cascades in immune networks. Objective: The aim of this project is to develop a theory of learning in liquid brains, focused on two aspects: 1) How do liquid brains learn? How is this process different from static neural networks?, and 2) what is the adaptive potential of liquid brains when they are embodied as an agent in interaction with a changing external environment? Answering these questions has the potential to extend the idea of liquid brains from a theoretically deep and intriguing concept to a useful tool available to the machine learning community. Specifically, liquid brains could afford more open-ended, self-improving systems, exploiting fluid reconfiguration of nodes as an adaptive dimension which is generally unexplored. This could also allow modes of learning that avoid catastrophic forgetting, as reconfigurations in the network are based on reversible movement patterns. In terms of technology transfer, this advances can also have important implications for new paradigms like edge computing. The 3 year fellowship provides a generous stipend, funding for research, and access to our GPU cluster. We seek candidates who are working on or more of the following areas: Foundations of intelligence, including mathematical and computational models of intelligence, cognitive theories of intelligence, and the neurobiological basis of intelligence. The Bazhenov Lab at the University of California, San Diego (https://www.bazhlab.ucsd.edu) is currently seeking to fill a postdoctoral position to study the role of sleep in memory, learning, and forgetting. This exciting project involves close collaboration with experimental labs. The ultimate goal of the work is to advance our understanding of how the human and animal brain learn from experience and how sleep contributes to memory consolidation for recent learning. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing anatomically realistic biophysical brain network models based on experimental data. These models will be instrumental in uncovering network dynamics involved in memory consolidation and reconsolidation during sleep, as well as guiding data analysis and generating innovative experimental predictions. Additionally, depending on the candidate's interests and experience, there may be opportunities to participate in other related lab projects, such as developing “whole human brain” models based on dMRI data or applying principles learned from neuroscience to artificial intelligence for continuous learning, knowledge generalization, and adaptation to novel situations and contexts. An ideal candidate should have a background in computational/theoretical neuroscience and neural modeling. Programming experience with C/C++ is required, and knowledge of Python, PyTorch and/or Matlab is a plus. Dear Colleagues, We are seeking a PostDoc with a quantitative background who has finished (or about to finish) a doctoral degree in a quantitative field preferably but not limited to physics. The candidate should show enthusiasm for tackling theoretical foundations of behavior. The PostDoc will join our interdisciplinary and international team studying social foraging in animal groups. The researcher will be based in the integrative biophysics group at the University of Konstanz and Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, located in Konstanz, Germany. The integrative biophysics group led by Dr. Ahmed Elhady is focused on theoretical and computational understanding of mechanisms underlying foraging. The group has an extensive network of local and international collaborators. Through those collaborations, the PostDoc researcher will have access to a large number of data sets depicting foraging behaviors in locusts, rodents, non-human primates (marmosets) and human performing similar social foraging tasks. The PostDoc project can potentially address the following questions: 1. What are the quantitative foraging decision strategies employed by a particular animal species during social foraging? 2. Postdoc position in the development of light field imaging technologies for recording neural activity The Goodhill lab at Washington University in St Louis is looking for a postdoc scientist for an NIH-funded project to develop novel microscopy methods for whole-brain calcium imaging in freely-behaving zebrafish. The ideal candidate will be experienced in building new optical imaging technologies, and interested in leveraging these skills to help push the frontiers of neural recording across large numbers of neurons simultaneously. Prior experience in neuroscience is not essential. The lab focuses on the computational principles underlying the development of neural circuits and behavior. The goal of this project is to construct light-field imaging techniques to record the activity of ~100,000 neurons in the larval zebrafish brain during unconstrained hunting behavior. This is a collaboration with Oliver Cossairt at Northwestern University and Florian Willomitzer at the University of Arizona, and you will be working with students and postdocs from a diverse array of backgrounds including biology, mathematics, physics and engineering. Dear colleagues, The Computational Biosciences Group <https://crd.lbl.gov/divisions/scidata/computational-biosciences/> at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in Berkeley, CA has an immediate opening for a Software and Data Engineer in the area of Data Management and Analysis with applications to bioscience research. The position is in support of the Neurodata Without Borders <https://www.nwb.org/> project, which develops methods for standardization, sharing, and analysis of neurophysiology data. The technologies developed will have broader applications to other science domains such as genomics, protein design, and other biological data, providing great opportunities for career growth. The overall objectives for this position are to develop new methods and software tools that enable scientific knowledge discovery using modern data management and machine learning technologies and advance the state-of-the-art in data-intensive analysis. This position will be part of an experienced team conducting R&D in the areas of FAIR data science and modern methods for data understanding. You will use cutting-edge miniature two-photon Ca2+ imaging (https://tinyurl.com/mini2pCA1) enabling you to longitudinally record activity in defined, large neuronal populations and long-range afferents in freely moving animals. You will carry out rigorous neuronal and behavioral analyses within the confines of automatized closed-loop tasks tailored for visual navigation. This will involve the application of advanced tools for dense behavioral quantification, including multi-angle videography, inertial motion sensing, and egocentric recording with head-mounted cameras for the reconstruction of retinal input. Our aim is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the immediate and sustained multi-area neuronal representation of visual landmarks during unrestricted behavior. We aim to elucidate the mechanisms through which stable visual landmarks are encoded and the processes by which these representations are stabilized to facilitate robust allocentric navigation. Ideal candidates for this position should hold a doctorate in neuroscience, engineering, physics, or a related discipline, and should be deeply committed to rigorous neuroethology and technical development. We seek individuals with a "tinkering spirit", i.e., a strong penchant for problem-solving and creativity. Essential competencies include the demonstrated ability to design and carry out complex neuroscience experiments, robust programming capabilities, and a foundational knowledge of machine learning methodologies. Valuable experience would include a familiarity with rodent behavior, both in freely moving and head-fixed contexts. Although not mandatory, a background in visual neuroscience or navigation neuroscience would be viewed favorably. We are looking for a driven candidate with a solid record of accomplishment who is enthusiastic about interdisciplinary research. The successful candidate will be prepared to bring their skills and experience to our innovative and collaborative research environment.
