Postdoctoral position in computational neuroscience methods (NEURON simulator)

The McDougal lab at Yale University seeks one or two highly motivated Postdoctoral Associates to advance the frontiers of neuroscience simulation. In addition to papers, etc, this work will be shared with the community in the form of enhancements to the NEURON<https://nrn.readthedocs.io/> simulator. Related lab projects include: combining machine learning and mechanistic modeling, multisimulation (interoperation with other tools), high-resolution simulations of subcellular chemical dynamics, and algorithm development (GPUs, initialization, performance enhancements). The Postdoctoral Associate will lead one or more of these projects and will present this work at conferences, in publications, and in the form of open-source software. Mentorship and career development opportunities will be tailored to the Postdoctoral Associate’s interests. Applicants should hold or be about to complete a PhD in a quantitative field (e.g., mathematics, computer science), neuroscience, or a related field. Strong programming skills in Python and C++ are essential, as is scientific excellence as demonstrated through publication history. *Flatiron Research Fellow (Postdoctoral Fellow), NeuroAI and Geometric Data Analysis* *Description* Applications are invited for Flatiron Research Fellowships (FRF) in the NeuroAI and Geometric Data Analysis Group (SueYeon Chung, PI) at the Center for Computational Neuroscience at the Flatiron Institute of the Simons Foundation, whose focus is on understanding computation in the brain and artificial neural networks by: (1) analyzing geometries underlying neural or feature representations, embedding and transferring information, and (2) developing neural network models and learning rules guided by neuroscience. To do this, the group utilizes analytical methods from statistical physics, machine learning theory, and high-dimensional statistics and geometry.The CCN FRF program offers the opportunity for postdoctoral research in areas that have strong synergy with one or more of the existing research groups at CCN or other centers at the Flatiron Institute. In addition to carrying out an independent research program, Flatiron Research Fellows are expected to: disseminate their results through scientific presentations, publications, and software release, collaborate with other members of the CCN or Flatiron Institute, and participate in the scientific life of the CCN and Flatiron Institute by attending seminars, colloquia, and group meetings. In our research, we seek to uncover the principles of how the brain performs computations related to sensory perception, decision making, and motor control. While previous experience in computational neuroscience and machine learning are desirable, applicants from other quantitative fields (e.g. math, physics, statistics, computer science) who are eager to learn about neuroscience are highly encouraged to apply as well. The Bazhenov Lab at the University of California, San Diego, is currently seeking to fill a postdoctoral position to study the role of sleep in memory, learning, and forgetting. This exciting project involves close collaboration with experimental labs. The ultimate goal of the work is to advance our understanding of how the human and animal brain learns from experience and how sleep contributes to memory consolidation for recent learning. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing anatomically realistic biophysical brain network models based on experimental data. These models will be instrumental in uncovering network dynamics involved in memory consolidation, reconsolidation and forgetting during sleep, as well as guiding data analysis and generating innovative experimental predictions. Additionally, depending on the candidate's interests and experience, there may be opportunities to participate in other related lab projects. These projects include developing whole human brain model based on Human Connectome Project (HCP) data and mouse brain model based on the Allen Mouse Brain Connectivity Atlas. The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is a research institution with a Ph.D. program. Outstanding graduate students and faculty are being attracted internationally. Description CDS: The Center for Data Science (CDS) is the focal point for New York University’s university-wide efforts in Data Science. The Center was established in 2013 to advance NYU’s goal of creating a world-leading Data Science training and research facility, and arming researchers and professionals with the tools to harness the power of Big Data. Today, CDS counts 20 jointly appointed interdisciplinary faculty housed on three floors of our magnificent 60 5th Avenue building <https://www.google.com/maps/search/60%205th%20Avenue?entry=gmail&source=g>, one of New York City’s historic properties. It is home to a top-ranked MS in Data Science program, one of the first PhD programs in Data Science, and an undergraduate program in Data Science, as well as a lively Fellow and Postdoctoral program. It has over 60 associate and affiliate faculty from 25 departments in 9 schools and units. With cross-disciplinary research and innovative educational programs, CDS is shaping the new field of Data Science. The primary responsibilities will be: - teaching and coordinating three (3) entry- and advanced-level courses for undergraduates- and masters-level students in Data Science during each of the Fall and Spring semesters. Topics of courses might include some subset of: probability and statistics, statistical modeling, causal inference, machine learning, computer vision, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, “big data”, visualization, programming for data science. - training and evaluating teaching assistants - other responsibilities related to the administration of the undergraduate and graduate programs including but not limited to: helping with the administration of admissions to the MSDS, designing and revising curricula when required, advising students on optimal course choices and sequences. These other responsibilities may lead to a reduction in course load. This Clinical Faculty position is not a tenured or tenured-track position. Data Science full-time clinical faculty hold renewable term contracts, initially for one year, and later three to five years in duration. Clinical faculty are eligible for promotion within the Clinical faculty ranks (Assistant, Associate, Full). In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $85,000 - $135,000. Qualifications Applicants must have a strong background in Data Science and a Ph.D. in a related field such as computer science, statistics, quantitative neuroscience, political science, or linguistics and the like as well as experience in and knowledge about undergraduate and graduate teaching, learning, and curricular issues.
