An ERC-funded postdoctoral position is available in the Cossart lab at the Mediterranean Institute of Neurobiology (INSERM, Aix-Marseille University, Marseille, France) to work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and friendly environment (by the Calanques). The Cossart lab aims at understanding memory circuits in the brain and describing how they develop in health and disease. To this aim, we use cutting-edge optical, computational, and data analysis methods. The candidate will apply their skills to extract information from our datasets, build computational models to make predictions, and work in close collaboration with experimentalists. The candidate will be co-supervised by Dr. Lorenzo Fontolan, a computational neuroscientist who recently started his research group at Inmed. Starting date fall/winter 2023. Hi all, We are offering one postdoc position on self-organized network modelling at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics in Bilbao (Basque Country, Spain) under the supervision of MIguel Aguilera. DETAILS: **Postdoctoral Fellow on open-ended, self-organized, bio-inspired networks** Topics: One of the outstanding challenges in modelling living and cognitive systems is to capture their ability to continuously adapt and develop. Our behavioural responses are not fixed but driven instead by a complex ecology, composed of myriads of fluid and inconspicuous neurodynamical patterns that have slowly grown on us. AI models like neural networks can capture complex behaviours, but often this open-ended, liquid and ongoing reconfiguration is incredibly challenging to reproduce with static topologies. In contrast, liquid neural networks (or 'liquid brains') are a widespread class of networks with a particular feature: nodes (which may represent 'neurons' or 'agents' and typically all share identical rules) not only process information from neighbour nodes, but they also dynamically modify their network connections, e.g. by moving in space. These networks show how neural-like processing typically associated with static physiological networks can also emerge from fluid collective interaction, dynamically exploring configuration spaces beyond standard connection weight changes. Examples of this kind of model include collective decision-making and fluctuations in ant colonies or idiotypic cascades in immune networks. Objective: The aim of this project is to develop a theory of learning in liquid brains, focused on two aspects: 1) How do liquid brains learn? How is this process different from static neural networks?, and 2) what is the adaptive potential of liquid brains when they are embodied as an agent in interaction with a changing external environment? Answering these questions has the potential to extend the idea of liquid brains from a theoretically deep and intriguing concept to a useful tool available to the machine learning community. Specifically, liquid brains could afford more open-ended, self-improving systems, exploiting fluid reconfiguration of nodes as an adaptive dimension which is generally unexplored. This could also allow modes of learning that avoid catastrophic forgetting, as reconfigurations in the network are based on reversible movement patterns. In terms of technology transfer, this advances can also have important implications for new paradigms like edge computing. The 3 year fellowship provides a generous stipend, funding for research, and access to our GPU cluster. We seek candidates who are working on or more of the following areas: Foundations of intelligence, including mathematical and computational models of intelligence, cognitive theories of intelligence, and the neurobiological basis of intelligence. LASCON aims at introducing young researchers and graduate and advanced undergraduate students to the use of computational and mathematical methods for modeling neurons and neural networks. The following topics will be covered: single-cell models (biophysically detailed, reduced and simplified), circuit and network models of biophysically detailed and simplified spiking neurons, probabilistic neuronal models, synaptic plasticity and learning, spike train analysis, neural population models, neuron-glia interaction models, models of extracellular fields, brain criticality, computational psychiatry, traveling waves in neural systems, and dynamics of neuronal functional connectivity. These subjects will be taught via theoretical classes and hands-on tutorials with the use of the programs NEURON, NetPyNE, NEST, Brian, The Virtual Brain and others. Students will have to work on small research projects (to be done in groups of two), which they will present orally at the end of the school. In the selection procedure, priority will be given to Latin-American students, but students from other parts of the world are encouraged to apply as well. The Bazhenov Lab at the University of California, San Diego (https://www.bazhlab.ucsd.edu) is currently seeking to fill a postdoctoral position to study the role of sleep in memory, learning, and forgetting. This exciting project involves close collaboration with experimental labs. The ultimate goal of the work is to advance our understanding of how the human and animal brain learn from experience and how sleep contributes to memory consolidation for recent learning. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing anatomically realistic biophysical brain network models based on experimental data. These models will be instrumental in uncovering network dynamics involved in memory consolidation and reconsolidation during sleep, as well as guiding data analysis and generating innovative experimental predictions. Additionally, depending on the candidate's interests and experience, there may be opportunities to participate in other related lab projects, such as developing “whole human brain” models based on dMRI data or applying principles learned from neuroscience to artificial intelligence for continuous learning, knowledge generalization, and adaptation to novel situations and contexts. An ideal candidate should have a background in computational/theoretical neuroscience and neural modeling. Programming experience with C/C++ is required, and knowledge of Python, PyTorch and/or Matlab is a plus. The University of California offers excellent benefits, and the salary will be based on research experience. The project aims to create the next-gen humanoid robots with efficient computation, high cognition and autonomy, by synergistically combining interdisciplinary research development in neurophysiology, psychology, machine intelligence, cognitive mechatronics, neuromorphic engineering, and humanoid robotics. The PRIMI project seeks to create more capable interactive robots with advanced abilities, able to provide innovative and personalised services. Prototypes will be used in stroke rehabilitation studies. You will also join the Smart Interactive Technologies (SIT) research laboratory; a vibrant interdisciplinary group, led by Prof. Alessandro Di Nuovo, that conducts world-leading research on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. Dear Colleagues, We are seeking a PostDoc with a quantitative background who has finished (or about to finish) a doctoral degree in a quantitative field preferably but not limited to physics. The candidate should show enthusiasm for tackling theoretical foundations of behavior. The PostDoc will join our interdisciplinary and international team studying social foraging in animal groups. The researcher will be based in the integrative biophysics group at the University of Konstanz and Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, located in Konstanz, Germany. The integrative biophysics group led by Dr. Ahmed Elhady is focused on theoretical and computational understanding of mechanisms underlying foraging. The group has an extensive network of local and international collaborators. Through those collaborations, the PostDoc researcher will have access to a large number of data sets depicting foraging behaviors in locusts, rodents, non-human primates (marmosets) and human performing similar social foraging tasks. The PostDoc project can potentially address the following questions: 1. What are the quantitative foraging decision strategies employed by a particular animal species during social foraging? 2. How does those decision strategies compare across animal species in a quantitative evolutionary manner? 3. How did evolutionary processes quantitatively shape foraging behaviours? 4. How can one extend social foraging theory to account for different group size and different spatial environmental constraints?
