The project is based on our research (Ryom and Treves, Phys Rev X Life, 2023, and unpublished) and on extensive data on language parameters collected by Longobardi and collaborators (Ceolin et al, Phil Trans Roy Soc B, 2021) which suggest that language diversity may reflect the disordered freezing dynamics that in a spin glass leads to a multiplicity of ground states. In a simplified model, vectors of binary syntactic parameters interact via strong asymmetric logical implications and weak partly symmetric influences, which can produce critical slowing down through a novel mechanism of percolated freezing. Two postdoc positions are available at RIKEN Center for Brain Science, Japan, to work with Taro Toyoizumi on Computational/Theoretical Neuroscience. Our research is within the field of Computational Neuroscience. We utilize computer models to explore how information is processed in the brain and how the brain circuits adapt to the environment. Drawing on analytical techniques from statistical physics and information theory, we probe the key functional properties of neural circuits. We apply these techniques to distill diverse experimental findings into a few core concepts. We hold a particular interest in activity-dependent forms of plasticity in the brain, which exert significant influences on learning, memory, and development. Leveraging mathematical models, we aim to formulate a theory that bridges cellular-level plasticity rules and computation. The capacity of neurons to represent and retain information is gauged from the structure and behavior of resulting circuits. This special issue will be published in the research topic of the journal - Frontiers in Robotics and AI and Frontiers in Neurorobotics. In this special issue, we will discuss the fascinating Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) research with the interfacing of applied neuroscience, psychology and design methodologies. Hi, Could you distribute this announcement to your students? Thanks a lot! We are seeking 3 master's students to systematically evaluate Virtual Epilepsy Patients (VEP). The VEP workflow employs computational models and machine learning techniques to estimate epileptogenic networks and assist in surgical strategies. In this context, the computational models are personalized whole-brain network models based on the patient's recorded data. VEP represents the first well-established instance of applying the concept of virtual brain twins in a clinical trial, called Epinov. Our team is a world leader in advancing the concept of virtual brain twins. Three topics: 1. Systematic investigation of the sensitivity of the VEP in terms of electrode locations. 2. Systematic investigation of the robustness of the VEP in terms of data features. 3. Systematic investigation of the robustness of the VEP in terms of the size of the windows of seizure analysis. NEXTEN: Envisaging Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience for the next 10 years May 16-17, 2024 Washington University in St Louis nexten.wustl.edu Theoretical/Computational Neuroscience is currently undergoing a phase of unprecedented growth. Dramatic advances in the ease with which large-scale datasets of behavior, neural activity, connectomic and gene expression information can be collected have coincided with a revolution in the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence-based algorithms to interrogate such datasets. Concurrently, these new datasets are inspiring exciting new developments in mathematical tools for extracting their underlying structure and relationships. What is the current state of the art in our theoretical/computational understanding of the brain, and what does the future hold? You are invited to join an exciting line-up of leaders in the field to address these questions. The McDougal lab at Yale University seeks one or two highly motivated Postdoctoral Associates to advance the frontiers of neuroscience simulation. In addition to papers, etc, this work will be shared with the community in the form of enhancements to the NEURON<https://nrn.readthedocs.io/> simulator. Related lab projects include: combining machine learning and mechanistic modeling, multisimulation (interoperation with other tools), high-resolution simulations of subcellular chemical dynamics, and algorithm development (GPUs, initialization, performance enhancements). The Postdoctoral Associate will lead one or more of these projects and will present this work at conferences, in publications, and in the form of open-source software. Mentorship and career development opportunities will be tailored to the Postdoctoral Associate’s interests. Applicants should hold or be about to complete a PhD in a quantitative field (e.g., mathematics, computer science), neuroscience, or a related field. Strong programming skills in Python and C++ are essential, as is scientific excellence as demonstrated through publication history. Experience with the NEURON<https://nrn.readthedocs.io/> simulator, in machine learning, numerical methods, and/or GPU computing is desirable, but not required. Assistant Professor Position in Computational Neuroscience The Department of Neuroscience at Washington University School of Medicine (https://neuroscience.wustl.edu<https://neuroscience.wustl.edu/>) is currently recruiting investigators with the passion to create knowledge, pursue bold visions, and challenge canonical thinking as we expand into our new 600,000 sq ft purpose-built neurosciences research building. We are now seeking a tenure-track investigator at the level of Assistant Professor to develop an innovative research program in Theoretical/Computational Neuroscience. Applicants should have a strong background in physics, mathematics, engineering, computer science, or a related field and hold a PhD. The successful candidates will join a thriving theoretical/computational neuroscience community at Washington University, including the new Center for Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience. In addition, the Department also has world-class research strengths in systems, circuits and behavior, cellular and molecular neuroscience using a variety of animal models including worms, flies, zebrafish, rodents and non-human primates. We are particularly interested in outstanding researchers who are both creative and collaborative. The Department’s focus on fundamental neuroscience, outstanding research support facilities, and the depth, breadth and collegiality of our culture provide an exceptional environment to launch your independent research program. It is in place to recognize early career contributions and leadership in research in Complex Systems related fields. It is awarded to young researchers enrolled in a Ph.D. program. This competition consists in presenting your research in simple terms in a five minutes video to a lay audience.
