Dear colleagues, We have several openings for Postdoctoral Researchers to work at the intersection of Machine Learning and Computational Neuroscience funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant “DeepCoMechTome: Using deep learning to understand computations in neural circuits with Connectome-constrained Mechanistic Models“. The goal of DeepCoMechTome is to develop simulation-based machine learning tools that will make it possible to build neural network models that are both biologically realistic and computationally powerful. We are looking for candidates with a strong quantitative background and PhD in a relevant discipline, ideally in computational neuroscience, machine learning or numerical simulation, a genuine interest in collaborative work at the interface of machine learning and neuroscience, and strong programming skills (ideally Python and relevant deep learning frameworks). PhD position - Model-predictive control of brain plasticity for optimal non-invasive brain stimulation

About the Project Neuroplasticity is the mechanism that underpins the brain’s ability to learn or recover from traumatic events, but also its deterioration underlies several Neurodegenerative diseases and mental illnesses. It is an umbrella term that encompasses multiple processes occurring at different spatial and temporal scales (1, 2). The most commonly discussed type of plasticity is long-term potentiation (LTP) which is defined as an increase in efficacy between synapses of two neurons. Experiments designed to measure LTP are often done in cell slices or cultures using patch-clamp techniques. However, we often want to promote (and measure) plasticity in humans in-vivo but it is not clear how changes in synaptic efficacy manifest in macroscopic non-invasive imaging measurements such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), or electroencephalography (EEG) that are available for use in humans. This project aims to link our detailed cellular-level knowledge of plasticity processes with systems-level observations in humans and is focused on answering the following 2 questions: 1. How can we modulate plasticity non-invasively in the brain? 2. How can we measure plasticity in vivo? To answer these questions you will combine mathematical/computational modelling of biophysically realistic large-scale neural networks that exhibit plasticity with cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques to test the model predictions. The model will be adapted so that its output can be compared to the three major imaging techniques described above and you will determine how changes in connectivity between and within brain regions in the model predict changes in our imaging metrics. There will be a particular focus on developing an EEG marker of plasticity as this currently does not exist. Finally, you will test the model predictions in an imaging study combining brain stimulation, EEG, MRI and MRS in a proof-of-concept experiment in humans. This will provide us with a deeper understanding of how to modulate and measure plasticity that can be deployed in the future for medical applications of brain stimulation such as in Parkinson’s disease, depression and pain control. We are currently exploring a range of exciting topics at the intersection between computational neuroscience and probabilistic machine learning. In this context, we are looking for a PhD and a postdoc interested in using computational tools to investigate how the complex biophysics of single neurons gives rise to the dynamics of neural populations. Postdoctoral position in Human Visual Psychophysics with fMRI/MRI, (m/f/d) (TVöD-Bund E13, 100%) The Department of Sensory and Sensorimotor Systems (PI Prof. Li Zhaoping) at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics and at the University of Tübingen is currently looking for highly skilled and motivated individuals to work on projects aimed towards understanding visual attentional and perceptual processes using fMRI/MRI. Modellers Workshop for the Brain Dynamics Toolbox

Enrolments for the Modeller's Workshop are now open Master the art of programming differential equations in Matlab with the Brain Dynamics Toolbox. This online course is for researchers, students and instructors who wish to use the toolbox to build their own dynamical models. Every step of the process is demonstrated in a short video lecture with a practical focus on programming techniques. Topics include programming Ordinary Differential Equations, Partial Differential Equations, Delay Differential Equations, Stochastic Differential Equations, Auxiliary Plot Functions and command-line tools. Example code is provided in all cases. Study time is 8 hours. The Project: Our research mainly focuses on the cellular physiology of various elements of cortical microcircuits, the properties and plasticity of their synaptic connections and their contribution to the generation of various cognition-relevant network activities . Through our collaborators, we also study cortical circuit deficits in several animal model of brain disease. Workshop abstract: The modeling of collective behavior within a neuronal population, initiated by the pioneering work of Wilson and Cowan, has been a great source of inspiration in the computational neuroscience community. Indeed, the focus on the overall neuronal activity of a brain structure, rather than on the detailed evolution of the electric response of single neurons, allows to adequately model a vast range of brain functions and opens the door to a mathematical understanding of the processes involved. Moreover, the spatio-temporal version of this model, known as neural fields, allows one to consider spatial heterogeneity within a cerebral structure, at the price of more demanding analysis tools. Neural fields have been used in the investigation of a wide range of applications, including the modeling of sensory cortices, cognition, human-robot interaction, self-organizing maps, visual hallucinations, and deep brain stimulation. Despite great advances made on the mathematical understanding of these models, research on these models still progresses in several directions, including: - finer analysis of their behavior in a non-local regime - parameter identification based on experimental data - controllability analysis, e.g., to understand how to affect the dynamics via external stimulation - observability analysis, e.g., to determine the optimal sensor-placement strategy allowing to reconstruct the overall dynamics The aim of this workshop is to gather researchers from different fields (neuroscience, physics, mathematics, control engineering, computer science) to discuss the most recent advances on Wilson-Cowan and neural fields models and instill new collaboration opportunities on this topic. PhD or Postdoctoral Researcher in Bio-inspired, Model-Based Reinforcement Learning Location: Institute of Neuroinformatics and ETH AI Center, ETH Zurich, Switzerland Start Date: As early as July 1, 2023 The Grewe lab (www.grewelab.org <http://www.grewelab.org/>) at the Institute of Neuroinformatics (www.ini.uzh.ch <http://www.ini.uzh.ch/en.html>) and the ETH AI Center (ai.ethz.ch) at ETH Zurich invites applications for a PhD or Postdoctoral position in the area of bio-inspired, model-based reinforcement learning. We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to our ongoing research endeavors to understand and model the complex and dynamic patterns of neuronal activity inspired by how the brain operates and solves tasks. Research Background: Our lab's research focuses on understanding how the brain alters its internal neuronal activity patterns that encode information across large neuronal ensembles to facilitate learning. We are particularly interested in the mechanisms underlying changes in network information processing related to learning a model of the external world. Given the inherent complexity, unreliability, and multidimensionality of neuronal activity patterns in the brain, this is a challenging endeavor. To better understand learning in the brain we employ in in vivo brain recording methods in mice (eg. mini-scopes) to characterise learning-induced changes in neuronal ensemble activity (RL in mice). Simultaneously, we develop biologically-inspired multi-layer (deep) artificial neuronal network models (ANNs) that mimic the information processing and storage capabilities observed in real biological networks (e.g. to solve an RL problem). We place significant emphasis on reverse-engineering neuronal network function at a very abstract level and on understanding the fundamental principles that determine learning-induced changes in neuronal networks (biological and artificial). Role Description: As a PhD or Postdoctoral fellow, you will be tasked with developing and implementing innovative bio-inspired, model-based reinforcement learning algorithms. Your role will involve close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of neuroscience and machine learning researchers at the Institute of Neuroinformatics and the ETH AI Center respectively. Key Responsibilities: Design and implement bio-inspired, model-based reinforcement learning algorithms. Conduct/simulate RL experiments and analysis to test and refine these algorithms. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to advance our collective research goals. Present research findings at internal and external meetings and conferences. Contribute to the broader academic community through peer review and other service roles. Essential Qualifications: MSc or Ph.D. in Theoretical Neuroscience, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field (e.g. Physics). Some background in reinforcement learning, ideally model-based methods. Familiarity with bio-inspired neuronal network approaches to machine learning. Proven track record demonstrated by publications in reputable journals (PD only). Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Our technology work spans the lifetime from early detection and intervention to assistive devices for mobility, communication and cognition. We work across healthcare including Westmead hospital based research in neonatal intensive care, neurodevelopmental clinics, gait laboratories, speech therapy and disability services throughout NSW, Australia and in support of international research projects in this area. We seek to train and engage engineers in the areas of child development and physical and occupational therapies using the emerging technologies of robotics, bionics, virtual reality and machine learning. In this role you will: * facilitate and contribute to the fabrication of functional prototypes and experimental devices with emphasis on reliability and the provision of care * design and fabricate test apparatus, jigs, and other devices in support of the research programs * design electrical circuits, software, user interfaces and machine learning systems as required for achievement of the experimental objectives of the laboratory * participate in the coordination of experimentation (preparation, setup, execution, and post-procedure follow-up) and design experimental protocols * assist in the training, supervision and mentoring of Honours students About you The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Research Engineering Fellow who has: * a PhD or higher degree in a relevant area of engineering such as biomedical engineering, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer science, statistics, data analytics, applied mathematics or applied physics * experience in human experimental design, familiarity with human ethics, motion and audio signal processing, predictive modelling, statistical methods, and thorough documentation * a demonstrated understanding of the disability sector and goal-directed human centered design thinking approach * experience in Computer Aided Design (CAD), ideally SolidWorks, and a basic working knowledge of electrical circuits, embedded software, user interfaces * an ability to resolve matters that may arise as part of research and the challenges relating to innovation of new ideas and concepts Experience working in the health domain with clinical data and a demonstrated track record of supporting high quality academic publications is highly desirable. This is an academic position, of which the commencement level will be determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience and knowledge.
