Postdoctoral position in Human Psychophysics for understanding vision with/without Neuroimaging (m/f/d) (TVöD Bund E13, 100%) The Department of Sensory and Sensorimotor Systems (PI Prof. Li Zhaoping) at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics and at the University of Tübingen is currently looking for highly skilled and motivated individuals to work on projects aimed towards understanding visual attentional and perceptual processes using fMRI/MRI, TMS, EEG/MEG, and other relevant methodologies. With cross-disciplinary research and innovative educational programs, CDS is shaping the fields of Data Science and Machine Learning. The CDS Faculty Fellow will be expected to work at the boundaries between the data-science methods and domain sciences. They are also encouraged to develop collaborations with faculty at CDS and NYU. They will lead original research projects of their choosing with impact in one or more scientific domains and in one or more methodological domains (computer science, statistics, and applied mathematics). We seek outstanding interdisciplinary researchers with expertise in the methods of data science possibly with application in physical, life, or social science. The program recognizes that rapid advances in our ability to acquire and generate data are transforming all fields of discovery from data-poor to data-rich. A significant bottleneck to discovery is our ability to perform inference over heterogeneous, noisy, and often massive datasets. Successful candidates will bring a research agenda that can take advantage of the unique intellectual opportunities afforded by NYU, and will have experience in working with researchers across different fields. This is a full-time, non-tenure position, with a light teaching load of one (1) CDS course per year as the primary instructor. A postdoctoral position in “Multiphysics Brain Aging Modeling” is available in the group of Prof. Johannes Weickenmeier at Stevens Institute of Technology right outside New York City (www.weickenmeierlab.com<http://www.weickenmeierlab.com/>). The Soft Matter Biomechanics Lab combines experimental methods to biomechanically characterize brain tissue properties and various computational modeling techniques (e.g. finite element analysis, multiphysics modeling, medical image analysis) with the ultimate goal to better understand healthy brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Our constitutive aging and Alzheimer’s disease models couple neurobiology and mechanics (i.e. morphological shape changes and tissue loading) in order to identify abnormal aging patterns and brain regions at risk of developing secondary damage, such as white matter hyperintensities, hypoperfusion, traumatic injury, and vascular degeneration. We validate our models against longitudinal imaging data from databases such as the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). We are looking for applications with prior experience in advanced medical image analysis, data analysis, and modeling. Knowledge in the biology of aging is a significant advantage. New research in our limbo group (Ryom and Treves, Phys Rev X Life, 2023, and unpublished) and extensive data on language parameters collected by Longobardi and collaborators (Ceolin et al, Phil Trans Roy Soc B, 2021) suggest that language diversity may reflect the disordered freezing dynamics that in a spin glass leads to a multiplicity of ground states. In a simplified model, vectors of binary syntactic parameters interact via strong asymmetric logical implications and weak partly symmetric influences, which can produce critical slowing down through a novel mechanism of percolated freezing. Postdoc position in sleep modeling/analysis

POSTDOC POSITION IN MODELING/ANALYSIS FOR UNDERSTANDING SLEEP OVERVIEW. An NIH-funded collaboration between David Prober (Caltech), Thai Truong (USC) and Geoff Goodhill (Washington University in St Louis) aims to gain new insight into the neural circuits underlying sleep, through a combination of whole-brain neural recordings in zebrafish and theoretical/computational modeling. A postdoc position is available in the Goodhill lab to contribute to the modeling and computational analysis components. PROJECT DETAILS. Using novel 2-photon imaging technologies Prober and Truong are recording from the entire larval zebrafish brain at single-neuron resolution continuously for long periods of time, examining neural circuit activity during normal day-night cycles and in response to genetic and pharmacological perturbations. The Goodhill lab is analyzing the resulting huge datasets using a variety of sophisticated computational approaches, and using these results to build new theoretical models that reveal how neural circuits interact to govern sleep. APPLICANT PROFILE. Applicants should have a strong background in mathematics/theory/computation applied to biological problems. Experience in analyzing sleep processes is desirable but not required. LAB ENVIRONMENT. The Goodhill lab is an interdisciplinary environment of students and postdocs from a diverse array of backgrounds including neuroscience, mathematics, physics and engineering, working together on understanding neural circuit computation, particularly relating to neural development. The lab both performs its own behavioral and neural imaging experiments with larval zebrafish, and collaborates on the analysis of data generated elsewhere. UNIVERSITY ENVIRONMENT. The lab will use diverse tools from computational neuroscience to study how neuronal diversity drives physiologically relevant brain function in neuronal circuits, and how disruptions to this diversity might contribute to various neuropathologies.
