SPECIAL ISSUE ON RETINAL MECHANISMS UNDERLYING MOTION PERCEPTION IN VERTEBRATES JOURNAL OF INTEGRATIVE NEUROSCIENCE This call for papers is dedicated to the work of Vaxim Maximov on the general theme of retinal direction selectivity in vertebrates. All papers are welcome that describes neurophysiology and neural modelling of retinal circuitries underlying motion perception. Some suggestions: 1. Can asymmetry be justified based on anatomical studies showing less inhibitory synapses between SAC and DSGC in the null direction? 2. Is endoplasmic reticulum as a source of calcium heterogeneity underlying DS in SAC? 3. Is calcium bias to somatofugal motion due to intrinsic properties of SAC or is calcium bias in centrifugal motion caused by presynaptic delay in glutamate receptor activation induced calcium? 4. Are SACs are connected asymmetrically to DSGCs: those pointing in the null direction deliver inhibition; those pointing in the preferred direction do not? 5. Is intracellular calcium signal and not the membrane potential (voltage) directionally selective? 6. Although there have been great improvements over the last decades, current BCIs are still scarcely used outside laboratories. One major limitation preventing the prevalence of this promising technology into everyday life of, e.g., patients, is the lack of robustness and reliability. Adaptive BCIs compensate for changes encountered in real-world environments and are robust against nonstationarity (i) induced by external causes such as a change in the experimental environment or artifactual noise sources and (ii) internal causes, namely fluctuations of brain states e.g. slow ones due to fatigue or brisk ones caused by distraction of the subject. Co-adaptivity is an important ingredient of such systems, since in a ever-changing environment, it is not only the machine that needs to adapt to changes in signal statistics, it is also the user who has to adapt his strategies in order to cope with fluctuations in background noise and sensory input. This workshop presents recent developments in the field and aims at providing tools for neuroscientists and practitioners that enable them to go beyond restricted laboratory paradigms and study the brain while the subject is interacting with his/her natural environment. The workshop consists of 13 invited talks and a poster session. Applications are invited for the following post: Research Associate at the University of Ulster A major aim of this one-year research project is to make use of a combination of computational neuroimaging, data analytics and cloud/high-performance computing to analyse heterogeneous data, extract patterns and predict dementia. The types of data include brain imaging, biological, medical and lifestyle datasets. This timely, exciting and high-impact project is available in Ulster University's Computer Science Research Institute and is tenable in the Faculty of Computing and Engineering at the Magee campus. The successful applicant will utilize knowledge in computational neuroscience/neuroimaging, data analytics, mathematical/statistical modelling and cloud/high-performance computing in the research. The lab of Dr. John Murray at Yale University (http://murraylab.yale.edu) invites applications for postdoctoral positions for research in computational neuroscience. Successful candidates are expected to play an active and independent role in one of our research areas. Our work focuses on understanding the mechanisms of neural dynamics and cognitive function. We also apply computational insights from models to advance the study of brain disorders such as schizophrenia, in a framework for Computational Psychiatry. Our group leverages theoretical and computational modeling of neural circuits, as well as analysis of neural data. We emphasize close collaboration with experimental laboratories using a variety of techniques. Hi All, Several postdoctoral positions in theoretical/computational neuroscience are available in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics (PBio) at the University of Colorado's Anschutz Medical Campus, located in Aurora Colorado. The successful candidate(s) will work under the supervision of Dr. Joel Zylberberg to understand how the brain functions so robustly, despite the high levels of variability in the activities of its component neurons. This work will involve the development of mathematical /computational models of neural computation and/or neural communication that can be tested using experimental data. The PBio department has strengths in olfaction, audition, decision-making, motor control, cardiac pacemaking, and development, providing a rich scientific environment. Dr. Zylberberg also has on-going collaborations with retinal and hippocampal physiologists, providing additional opportunities for theory-experiment interaction. Requirements: Applicants should have (or soon be completing) a Ph.D. in either neuroscience, or in a quantitative discipline like applied mathematics, physics, computer science, electrical engineering, etc. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated problem solver with strong programming skills, previous experience in theoretical / computational neuroscience, and a deep desire to understand the principles underlying the functioning of the nervous system.
