The BCBT summer school is positioned at the interface between biology and future and emerging technologies with an emphasis on the principles underlying brains and their translation to avant-garde technologies. BCBT promotes a shared systems-level understanding of the functional architecture of the brain and its possible emulation in artificial systems. The summer school has been part of a series of events organized by the European coordination action Convergent Science Network of Biomimetics and Neurotechnology (*http://csnetwork.eu/ <http://csnetwork.eu/>*). This year the school is supported by the ERC project CDAC <http://specs.upf.edu/projects/2810> that investigates the role of consciousness in adaptive behavior combining empirical, computational and robot-based approach. BCBT is also supported by EPISENSE <https://www.humanbrainproject.eu/sp3>, a subproject of the Human Brain Project <https://www.humanbrainproject.eu/>(HBP) that investigates brain mechanisms of perception and memory. This is the 10th year of BCBT, which has run with great success in previous years thanks to an excellent line-up of outstanding speakers (see bcbt.upf.edu for previous editions of the school). BCBT lectures <https://www.youtube.com/user/ConvergentScienceNw/playlists> are available online with the BCBT *Podcast interviews *with many of the BCBT speakers. BCBT caters to students and researchers involved in projects that are in the ambit of “BIO-ICT convergence”, "Brain Inspired ICT", “Cognitive systems-robotics”, “Cognitive and neural systems”, “Foundations of social cognition”. BCBT will offer up to 30 student slots for the practical workshops, while as many researchers can register to attend the presentations and discussion sessions as they are interested. The atmosphere of the BCBT summer school is informal with the goal to stimulate in-depth discussion. There are 1 or 2 presentations in the morning, with the afternoons reserved for tutorials and projects for student participants and road-mapping workshops or further discussion for senior scientists. An NIH-funded postdoctoral fellow position is available in the Haber laboratory in the Basic Neuroscience Division at McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate. We are a seeking a highly motivated individual with interests in a multidisciplinary approach for understanding network interactions between emotions and cognition. The position includes implementation and development of combining image methods to precise anatomic mapping to: 1) understand networks of prefrontal cortex and basal ganglia that underlie motivation and decision making; 2) use this data to guide and interpret connectivity profiles in the human brain, and link the neurocircuits to functional networks, and 3) determine how abnormal connectivity profiles in obsessive compulsive disorder, addiction, and depression, are related to specific circuits. One goal of the laboratory is to identify specific network dysfunction in diseases and develop novel targets for brain stimulation. The successful applicant will join a vibrant and collaborative laboratory and scientific community at McLean Hospital. Reminder funded PhD Please note the deadline of application is 10th of May 2017 Investigating oscillatory behaviour in Alzheimer’s disease to establish biomarkers: an EEG and computational programme of PhD study Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship within the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Business Law and Social Sciences, Birmingham City University. Applicants need to demonstrate ability and commitment, including excellent communications skills in written and spoken English. Project Synopsis: This proposed PhD work follows high profile research by the University of Birmingham team (Prof. Kim Shapiro, Prof. Howard Bowman and Mr Ali Mazaheri). The project is collaborative work between Birmingham City University (Dr Eirini Mavritsaki and Prof. Maxine Lintern) and University of Birmingham (Prof. Kim Shapiro and Prof. Howard Bowman). The University of Birmingham team has access to ERP data of a semantic anomaly and word repetition task (Olichney et al, 2002). In the original analysis of the data by Olichney and colleagues, the N400 component was analysed, which is related to semantic manipulation. Olichney and colleagues found evidence of N400 abnormalities in mild cognitive impairment patients, which predicted later progression to Alzhemier’s. The University of Birmingham team have identified oscillatory changes that also predict progression to Alzheimer’s, opening up the possibility that an effective EEG-based early-stage biomarker of Alzheimer’s might be within reach. We plan to simulate this data and the changes observed in it using a computational model that is based on the sSoTS (Mavritsaki, Heinke, Humphreys and Deco, 2011) model. The successful applicant will join the Centre for Applied Psychological Research (CAPresearch) within the Department of Psychology at Birmingham City University. CAPresearch is part of a vibrant and rapidly expanding research community, which offers applicants with an excellent opportunity to develop their research career. Postdoctoral Fellow in Computational Cognitive Science Central European University, Budapest, Hungary We are seeking a highly creative and motivated postdoctoral fellow to work in the group of Mate Lengyel at the Department of Cognitive Science, Central European University, Budapest, Hungary (https://cognitivescience.ceu.edu/) The group is also twinned by the Lengyel group at the Computational and Biological Learning Lab, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge (http://learning.eng.cam.ac.uk/Public/Lengyel/) where Dr Lengyel holds a permanent position. The group studies learning and memory from computational, algorithmic/representational and neurobiological viewpoints. Computationally and algorithmically, we use ideas from Bayesian approaches to statistical inference and reinforcement learning to characterise the goals and mechanisms of learning in terms of normative principles and behavioral results. Specifically, the project will characterise how human’s structured and high dimensional mental representations change in time due to forgetting, learning, interference, and other processes. For this, state-of-the-art machine learning techniques will be employed to analyse a diverse set of behavioural data sets collected by our experimental collaborators: Gergely Csibra (infant studies) and Jozsef Fiser (visual perception and learning) in Budapest, and Daniel Wolpert (sensorimotor control) in Cambridge. The project is funded by an ERC grant, providing internationally competitive salaries. The successful candidate will have - a strong quantitative background - demonstrable interest in the analysis of behavioural data - obtained (or be close to the completion of) a PhD or equivalent in computational neuroscience, physics, mathematics, computer science, machine learning or a related field Preference will be given to candidates with - previous experience in machine learning, computational and / or behavioural neuroscience - sufficient programming skills to run numerical simulations (eg. in C, Python, or MatLab) - expertise with advanced data analysis and Bayesian techniques Research environment: The Central European University is the highest-ranked university in Hungary. 10ᵀᴴ Advanced Scientific Programming in Python ============================================== a Summer School by the G-Node and the Municipality of Sithonia Scientists spend more and more time writing, maintaining, and debugging software. While techniques for doing this efficiently have evolved, only few scientists have been trained to use them. As a result, instead of doing their research, they spend far too much time writing deficient code and reinventing the wheel. In this course we will present a selection of advanced programming techniques and best practices which are standard in the industry, but especially tailored to the needs of a programming scientist. Lectures are devised to be interactive and to give the students enough time to acquiredirect hands-on experience with the materials. Students will work in pairsthroughout the school and will team up to practice the newly learned skills in a real programming project — an entertaining computer game. We use the Python programming language for the entire course. Python works as a simple programming language for beginners, but more importantly, it also works great in scientific simulations and data analysis. We show how clean language design, ease of extensibility, and the great wealth of open source libraries for scientific computing and data visualization are driving Python to become a standard tool for the programming scientist. This school is targeted at Master or PhD students and Post-docs from all areas of science. Competence in Python or in another language such as Java, C/C++, MATLAB, or Mathematica is absolutely required. Basic knowledge of Python and of a version control system such as git, subversion, mercurial, or bazaar is assumed. Postdoctoral Research Position in Cognitive Neuroscience Department of Psychology, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee The Sensory Neuroscience, Attention, & Perception Laboratory (SNAP Lab) of Dr. Adam Greenberg is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to begin late Summer/early Fall 2017 (flexible start date). We study the neural mechanisms of attention and perception in humans using a large range of cognitive neuroscience tools including neuroimaging (fMRI, diffusion imaging), TMS, computational modeling, and neuropsychological methods. This fully funded position was created to coincide with multiple grant-funded studies of visual/auditory attention in both normal volunteers and cancer patients. Thus, a wide range of specific projects are possible along with the possibility of writing manuscripts on existing data. New project development is also strongly encouraged. Successful candidates will have a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, etc.), should be highly motivated, and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Experience with TMS is especially desirable, as is a strong background in attention and perception. Experience with other techniques used in the lab are welcome but not required. [Apologies for cross-posting] Dear Colleagues, I write to announce an upcoming workshop: HBP Hippocamp 2017: Collaborative and Integrative Modeling of Hippocampus to be held May 23rd -24th at the European Institute for Theoretical Neuroscience (EITN) in Paris, France , supported by the Human Brain Project ( [ http://www.humanbrainproject.eu/ | www.humanbrainproject.eu ] ). In short, the objective of the workshop is to highlight existing modeling efforts and strategic datasets for modeling the hippocampus, and define a common integrative and collaborative modeling target including HBP and community stakeholders. The ultimate aim is to catalyze an inclusive community-driven integration and release process for open pre-competitive reference models of hippocampus which are well documented and validated (supported in part by IT infrastructure funded by HBP). Involvement from the community interested in models of hippocampus is highly encouraged. To keep the meeting focused on the task, participation will be limited to ~45 people, so registration is required. Please note the deadline of application is 10th of May 2017 Investigating oscillatory behaviour in Alzheimer’s disease to establish biomarkers: an EEG and computational programme of PhD study Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship within the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Business Law and Social Sciences, Birmingham City University. Applicants need to demonstrate ability and commitment, including excellent communications skills in written and spoken English. Project Synopsis: This proposed PhD work follows high profile research by the University of Birmingham team (Prof. Kim Shapiro, Prof. Howard Bowman and Mr Ali Mazaheri). The project is collaborative work between Birmingham City University (Dr Eirini Mavritsaki) and University of Birmingham (Prof. Kim Shapiro and Prof. Howard Bowman). The University of Birmingham team has access to ERP data of a semantic anomaly and word repetition task (Olichney et al, 2002). In the original analysis of the data by Olichney and colleagues, the N400 component was analysed, which is related to semantic manipulation. Olichney and colleagues found evidence of N400 abnormalities in mild cognitive impairment patients, which predicted later progression to Alzhemier’s. The University of Birmingham team have identified oscillatory changes that also predict progression to Alzheimer’s, opening up the possibility that an effective EEG-based early-stage biomarker of Alzheimer’s might be within reach. We plan to simulate this data and the changes observed in it using a computational model that is based on the sSoTS (Mavritsaki, Heinke, Humphreys and Deco, 2011) model. The successful applicant will join the Centre for Applied Psychological Research (CAPresearch) within the Department of Psychology at Birmingham City University. CAPresearch is part of a vibrant and rapidly expanding research community, which offers applicants with an excellent opportunity to develop their research career. Project Synopsis: There are many limitations on the behaviour of complex neural systems, but one primary constraint is to filter incoming input in order that actions can be programmed to behaviourally relevant stimuli. A major challenge for current-day researchers is to understand how (and why) these limitations arise, especially in conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) where the attentional system is dysfunctional. The main aim of this project is to identify and understand the differences in visual attention between children diagnosed with ADHD and typically functioning children. In addition, to investigate the role of diet in ADHD. This Ph.D. thesis aims to do this by using a novel interdisciplinary approach, behavioural and computational modelling study. The student can choose to work in both or just one approach (either computational or behavioural work). Please submit your abstracts via the conference website - https://trf-strasbourg.sciencesconf.org/resource/page/id/16 Early-bird registration is now open - https://trf-strasbourg.sciencesconf.org/resource/page/id/17 *Call for Symposia (deadline: May 1, 2017)* 8 Symposia will be selected from submitted proposals. Each symposium must be focused on a single topic and will include 3 oral presentations of 20 minutes (+ 5 minutes questions) organized by a chairperson, who can also be a presenter. There can be 4 oral presentations if preferred, but the total duration of the symposium should not exceed 1 hour and 15 minutes. The chairperson is responsible for submitting the symposium proposal and for recruitingspeakers. Symposia on current topics and of a multidisciplinary nature are encouraged. Symposium proposals should include the following: 1. The name, contact information, and affiliation of the symposium chairperson. 2. Title 3. A brief abstract describing the symposiums objective and topics to be covered (maximum 500 words, references included). 4. Up to 5 keywords. 5. The Language in Interaction research consortium, sponsored by a large grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), brings together many of the excellent research groups in the Netherlands with a research programme on the foundations of language. In addition to excellence in the domain of language and related relevant fields of cognition, our consortium provides state-of-the-art research facilities and a research team with ample experience in the complex research methods that will be invoked to address the scientific questions at the highest level of methodological sophistication. These include methods from genetics, neuroimaging, computational modelling, and patient-related research. This consortium realises both quality and critical mass for studying human language at a scale not easily found anywhere else. We have identified five Big Questions (BQ) that are central to our understanding of the human language faculty. These questions are interrelated at multiple levels. Teams of researchers will collaborate to collectively address these key questions of our field. Our five Big Questions are: BQ1: The nature of the mental lexicon: How to bridge neurobiology and psycholinguistic theory by computational modelling? BQ2: What are the characteristics and consequences of internal brain organization for language? BQ3: Creating a shared cognitive space: How is language grounded in and shaped by communicative settings of interacting people? BQ4: Variability in language processing and in language learning: Why does the ability to learn language change with age? How can we characterise and map individual language skills in relation to the population distribution? BQ5: How are other cognitive systems shaped by the presence of a language system in humans? Successful candidates will be appointed at one of the consortium’s home institutions, depending on the position applied for. All successful candidates will become members of our Big Question teams. Postdoctoral position in visuomotor control of catching and throwing – Rome, Italy ** A postdoctoral position is available in the group led by Prof. Andrea d’Avella (a.davella(a)hsantalucia.it) in the Laboratory of Neuromotor Physiology directed by Prof. Francesco Lacquaniti, at the Santa Lucia Foundation in Rome, Italy. The researcher will be involved in ongoing studies performed under the interdisciplinary project CogIMon, funded by the H2020 program of the European Union. The project CogIMon aims at a step change in human-robot interaction, and comprises leading robotics, computational neuroscience, and human motor control European research groups. Research will be focused on investigating strategies for prediction, coordination, and control during interactive human-human and human-robot catching and throwing. Experiments are conducted with real balls in a large motion capture setup and with virtual balls in an immersive multisensory virtual environment where ball impact is rendered with a haptic device, and human and robotic agents are simulated. Applicants should have a PhD degree in a relevant discipline, a real interest in human sensorimotor control, and strong quantitative and programming skills. Experience with collection and analysis of experimental data, psychophysics in virtual environments, computer graphics and avatar animation are valuable assets.
