Dear comp-neuro The Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine (INM) at Research Center Jülich, Germany, investigates the structure and function of the human brain on different spatial and temporal scales within the research program “Decoding the Human Brain”. The Supercomputing Centre is home of one of the most powerful machines and has a leading role in the European exascale strategy. Basic neuroscience connects the two research areas as it heavily relies on modeling and simulation, which are necessary to approach the brain’s immense complexity, manage the huge amount of resulting data, and develop reliable control techniques. The subinstitute INM-6, Computational and Systems Neuroscience ( https://www.fz-juelich.de/inm/inm-6/EN/Home/home_node_INM6.html ), develops mathematical models of neuronal dynamics and function. Model-driven analyses of brain activity and structure as well as simulation of biologically realistic models form the core of our work. Among others, the INM-6/IAS-6 is actively involved in the EU flagship project „Human Brain Project“ (HBP, https://www.humanbrainproject.eu ). Together with its partners, INM-6 develops analysis tools and the leading simulation code (NEST) for brain scale networks with cellular resolution in an open source approach ( http://www.nest-initiative.org ). The Lefebvre lab at uOttawa is recruiting two postdoctoral fellows for the Winter 2020. Candidates interested in computational neuroscience, brain imaging and applied mathematics are encouraged to apply. Selected candidates will be involved in the following projects: 1. In collaboration with the Griffiths Lab at the CAMH Krembil Center for Neuroinformatics (KCNI) and University of Toronto, the goal of the project is to develop, analyse and explore computational models of non-invasive brain stimulation (e.g. TMS, TES) and their impact on multi-scale neural activity. Specifically, we seek to better understand network-based mechanisms of neural control, oscillatory entrainment and/or stimulation-induced brain plasticity. This project involves a combination of computational and mathematical modelling, has strong potential for knowledge translation, and aims to help inspire new non-invasive treatments for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). 1. In collaboration with the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, the goal of this project is to better understand mechanisms of white matter plasticity, neuron-glia interactions, myelination and its impact on brain function. Using a combination of modelling and simulations, interfacing rodent and human data, the role of the fellow will be to examine the influence of white matter plasticity on neural synchrony and memory. This project involves a combination of computational and mathematical modelling, and strong interactions with experimentalists. The research will take place in the Department of Biology, the Brain and Mind Institute and the Center for Neural Dynamics of the University of Ottawa, a vivid interdisciplinary research cluster set in the bilingual capital of Canada. Both projects are deployed in the Ottawa-Toronto axis, through close collaborations between uOttawa, uToronto, CAMH KCNI, The University Health Network and The Krembil Research Institute. Based on the research needs and resources, candidates will be required to travel between both cities often. Throughout, candidates will interact closely with clinicians, experimentalists and scholars in neuroimaging. Requisites: Candidates should have completed their PhD in physics, mathematics, neuroscience or related disciplines, and have an excellent publication track record. Expertise in programming is a necessity, as well as independence in research. Experience in brain imaging, signal processing and dynamical systems are considered strong assets. FOSDEM (Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting) is a non-commercial, volunteer-organised European event centred on free and open-source software development. It is aimed at developers and anyone interested in the free and open-source software movement. It aims to enable developers to meet and to promote the awareness and use of free and open-source software. Postdoctoral position on computational modelling: interfacing models with nanoarrays to drive cultured neurons

The positions are for 2 years, with a possibility of renewal for another 2 years. Salary is commensurate with experience. The successful applicant will work on a multi-disciplinary project funded by the FET (Future and Emerging Technologies) Open Instrument of the European Innovation Council. The NEUREKA project aims to develop a new prototype technology that can be used for drug discovery for neurological diseases. In this new hybrid technology, computational neuronal networks that simulate dysfunction will drive cultured neurons to replicate neuropathologies. A proof-of-concept will be provided for Alzheimer’s disease, using human (iPSC)-derived neurons while testing the effects of novel drug candidates. Blue Brain Porject (Campus Biotech, Geneva, Switzerland) is looking for a *Post-doctoral Researcher in Computational modelling of hippocampal circuits*. Improve the existing large-scale models of rodent hippocampus. The current network models are already the product of several iterations and their emergent behavior can reproduce many features of the hippocampus. The work on the models continues by expanding the region of interest from CA1 (the first region we considered) to the full hippocampus, and eventually by connecting the hippocampus to the rest of the brain. In parallel, the models will include more or more details. For example, we are working on including gap junctions, long-term plasticity, structural plasticity, neuromodulation, glia, vasculature, and so on. Exploit the models to answer outstanding questions in the field, such as information processing in the hippocampus, spatial navigation, memory processes, development of pathological conditions (Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy). The models are designed not to answer one specific question, but for a general purpose. The goal of this project is to leverage the Blue Brain software and existing thalamic models to build and validate biologically-accurate models of thalamo-cortical circuitry. Modelling these circuits is a crucial step to investigate brain functions, such us sensory transmission, sleep rhythms, wakefulness, alertness. Neuroimaging Data Scientist Multimodal neuroimaging study of cerebellar anomalies in Parkinson’s disease The project SENCE (Movement disorders in Parkinson’s disease: The role of somatosensory deficits and cerebellar anomalies) is funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) and conducted in collaboration with the University of Oxford (Medical Research Council - MRC). It investigates the anatomical anomalies and abnormal metabolism of the cerebellum resulting from basal ganglia deregulation in Parkinson’s Disease (PD), which may contribute substantially to motor deficits. To this aim, we collect in PD patients (and healthy controls) an original multimodal neuroimaging dataset, comprising anatomical, diffusion-weighted (DWI), and resting state fMRI (rs-fMRI), as well as FDG-PET images, complemented by behavioural and electrophysiological recordings (EEG/intracranial LFP) collected in the same participants during motor tasks performed ON/OFF dopaminergic medication and/or ON/OFF deep brain stimulation (using open- or closed-loop adaptive stimulation protocols). -- Missions -- The data scientist will be responsible to set-up processing pipelines dedicated to analyzing the different neuroimaging scan types (MRI and PET), both at the full-brain level and with a particular focus on the characterization of the anatomy, connectivity and metabolism of the cerebellum. These neuroimaging results will also be combined with behavioural and electrophysiological data which will be analysed by other members of the project team. Furthermore, the data scientist will organize the raw and processed data in a standardized fashion to make it accessible to all the consortium and to the scientific community at large. These missions fall into our commitment to reproducible science through open code and data. -- Profile -- This position is for a candidate who is comfortable (or proficient) with computer programming (python will be our language of choice; matlab will also be used) and has good knowledge and/or experience in signal and image processing. It can be of interest to different types of profiles. You are a young graduate (BSc or MSc) either in data science, in electrical engineering or in neuroscience and you want to be at the heart of an innovative medical imaging project, with the possibility to continue as a PhD student. We will study predictive processing in the visual system, test new models of object recognition, and the contribution of different cell types to neural coding. Data will be collected with chronic, high-density silicon probes including wireless recordings during (freely moving) natural behavior (using the eCube white matter system). A part of the project involves optogenetics. Additional training in high-density electrophysiology can be acquired by participation in projects in mice. You will work closely together with computational scientists in our laboratory working on deep learning and state space analyses. The main focus of the project is the interpretation of neural activity from artificial neural networks (in particular recurrent and predictive neural networks) and the study of population coding. We are looking for a computational neuroscience PhD student to start September 2020 to do computational modelling of synaptic plasticity in neurodevelopmental brain disorders. You would mainly be based in the University of Bristol in the group of Cian O’Donnell, and co-supervised by Krasi Tsaneva-Atanasova (University of Exeter) and Jeremy Hall (Cardiff University). Your background can be flexible but training in neuroscience, mathematical modelling and/or scientific programming would be beneficial. Usually we use Julia, Python or Matlab programming languages. Project outline: Autism and Schizophrenia, two of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, have been linked with ~100 different genetic mutations each. Many of the implicated genes code for proteins involved in synaptic plasticity. It may be that these distinct mutations converge to give similar alterations to the “rules of synaptic plasticity”, and therefore affect learning and development. L-type calcium channel are one notable example, frequently popping up in risk gene lists and known to play crucial roles in synaptic plasticity. In this PhD project you would extend our existing biophysical models of calcium signalling at rodent hippocampal synapses to try to figure out the role of dysfunctional L-type calcium ion channels in these brain disorders. Two or more PhD positions in theoretical and computational neuroscience are available in the "Neural Reckoning" group of Dan Goodman at Imperial College London (http://neural-reckoning.org) I am interested in supervising students with a strong mathematical, computational or neuroscience background. Projects could be carried out in several possible areas relating to the work in the group. Some suggestions for topics that would be interesting to me are below, but I'm very happy to consider other possibilities. In addition to working within the group, studying at Imperial College provides excellent opportunities for interacting with other theoretical and experimental researchers, both at Imperial and in the many neuroscience groups in London. At the moment, I'm particularly interested in using techniques from machine learning to generate biologically plausible models that can also perform complex tasks. I'm also generally interested in how to perform computations with spiking neurons, and the computational role of neural mechanisms (such as spiking and heterogeneity). I often work in the auditory system, which is particularly interesting when thinking about temporal processing. Finally, I'm one of the authors of the "Brian" spiking neural network simulator (http://briansimulator.org) and I'm always interested in students who want to work on neuroinformatics projects such as simulation or neural data analysis. Two MSc/PhD positions in Computational Neuroscience The Cognitive Neuroscience and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CogNeuroAI Lab) at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, Department of Computer Science & the Brain and Mind Institute (BMI) has two MSc/PhD position openings in the field of cognitive computational neuroscience to start in January or May 2020. The positions offer a competitive stipend for the graduate students. The nature of these positions will provide the graduate students with opportunities to work on interdisciplinary collaborative projects. We are looking for motivated students to join exciting projects in our lab in developing cutting-edge computational methods to analyze brain MEG/EEG/fMRI data. We also train state of the art compute vision models and compare human brain MEG/EEG/fMRI data with inter units of the models. Candidates should have at least a Bachelors or Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Computer Science or related fields. Having good programming skills in MATLAB, Python, and deep learning frameworks like Pytorch and experience in machine learning, compute vision, neuroscience experiments or brain data analysis will be a plus. Though there are lots of opportunities to learn these skills as well. Hello, I am looking for two PhD students to work in my MCEN lab within the Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics (Bilbao/Spain; http://www.bcamath.org/) on research questions at the interface between Mathematical, Computational and Experimental Neuroscience. The application period closes soon, however the phd project would start in September 2020 (according to the Spanish law). We are seeking students who either, are undertaking their MSc degree or already have completed it. We encourage students with background training in either Maths, Physics, Computer Science or Engineering to apply. Desirably, we would like students that have an interest in understanding brain dynamics and willing to work at the interface between mathematics, data and lab work.
