Neuroimaging Data Scientist Multimodal neuroimaging study of cerebellar anomalies in Parkinson’s disease The project SENCE (Movement disorders in Parkinson’s disease: The role of somatosensory deficits and cerebellar anomalies) is funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) and conducted in collaboration with the University of Oxford (Medical Research Council - MRC). It investigates the anatomical anomalies and abnormal metabolism of the cerebellum resulting from basal ganglia deregulation in Parkinson’s Disease (PD), which may contribute substantially to motor deficits. To this aim, we collect in PD patients (and healthy controls) an original multimodal neuroimaging dataset, comprising anatomical, diffusion-weighted (DWI), and resting state fMRI (rs-fMRI), as well as FDG-PET images, complemented by behavioural and electrophysiological recordings (EEG/intracranial LFP) collected in the same participants during motor tasks performed ON/OFF dopaminergic medication and/or ON/OFF deep brain stimulation (using open- or closed-loop adaptive stimulation protocols). -- Missions -- The data scientist will be responsible to set-up processing pipelines dedicated to analyzing the different neuroimaging scan types (MRI and PET), both at the full-brain level and with a particular focus on the characterization of the anatomy, connectivity and metabolism of the cerebellum. These neuroimaging results will also be combined with behavioural and electrophysiological data which will be analysed by other members of the project team. Furthermore, the data scientist will organize the raw and processed data in a standardized fashion to make it accessible to all the consortium and to the scientific community at large. These missions fall into our commitment to reproducible science through open code and data. -- Profile -- This position is for a candidate who is comfortable (or proficient) with computer programming (python will be our language of choice; matlab will also be used) and has good knowledge and/or experience in signal and image processing. It can be of interest to different types of profiles. You are a young graduate (BSc or MSc) either in data science, in electrical engineering or in neuroscience and you want to be at the heart of an innovative medical imaging project, with the possibility to continue as a PhD student. Or you already have a PhD in a relevant field and you want to take this opportunity to fulfill the aforementioned missions while getting further involved in the research aspects of the project, which should offer excellent opportunities for publications in neuroscience or methodological journals. -- Working environment -- The Institut de Neurosciences de la Timone (INT) is one of the top French neuroscience research institutes with 150 staff members gathered in 10 inter-disciplinary teams examining different aspects of the cerebral organization. We will study predictive processing in the visual system, test new models of object recognition, and the contribution of different cell types to neural coding. Data will be collected with chronic, high-density silicon probes including wireless recordings during (freely moving) natural behavior (using the eCube white matter system). A part of the project involves optogenetics. Additional training in high-density electrophysiology can be acquired by participation in projects in mice. You will work closely together with computational scientists in our laboratory working on deep learning and state space analyses. The main focus of the project is the interpretation of neural activity from artificial neural networks (in particular recurrent and predictive neural networks) and the study of population coding. We are looking for candidates with a biology or medicine background and experience in behavioral training and electrophysiology. We are looking for a computational neuroscience PhD student to start September 2020 to do computational modelling of synaptic plasticity in neurodevelopmental brain disorders. You would mainly be based in the University of Bristol in the group of Cian O’Donnell, and co-supervised by Krasi Tsaneva-Atanasova (University of Exeter) and Jeremy Hall (Cardiff University). Your background can be flexible but training in neuroscience, mathematical modelling and/or scientific programming would be beneficial. Usually we use Julia, Python or Matlab programming languages. Project outline: Autism and Schizophrenia, two of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders, have been linked with ~100 different genetic mutations each. Many of the implicated genes code for proteins involved in synaptic plasticity. It may be that these distinct mutations converge to give similar alterations to the “rules of synaptic plasticity”, and therefore affect learning and development. L-type calcium channel are one notable example, frequently popping up in risk gene lists and known to play crucial roles in synaptic plasticity. In this PhD project you would extend our existing biophysical models of calcium signalling at rodent hippocampal synapses to try to figure out the role of dysfunctional L-type calcium ion channels in these brain disorders. We use behavioral, anatomical, imaging, electrophysiological, and computational methods to understand the neural circuits for vision and navigation in Drosophila. We pair these tools with high-throughput, high-content exploration of Drosophila behaviors. In this position, you would apply these methods to deeply map behavioral circuits. Two or more PhD positions in theoretical and computational neuroscience are available in the "Neural Reckoning" group of Dan Goodman at Imperial College London (http://neural-reckoning.org) I am interested in supervising students with a strong mathematical, computational or neuroscience background. Projects could be carried out in several possible areas relating to the work in the group. Some suggestions for topics that would be interesting to me are below, but I'm very happy to consider other possibilities. In addition to working within the group, studying at Imperial College provides excellent opportunities for interacting with other theoretical and experimental researchers, both at Imperial and in the many neuroscience groups in London. At the moment, I'm particularly interested in using techniques from machine learning to generate biologically plausible models that can also perform complex tasks. I'm also generally interested in how to perform computations with spiking neurons, and the computational role of neural mechanisms (such as spiking and heterogeneity). I often work in the auditory system, which is particularly interesting when thinking about temporal processing. Finally, I'm one of the authors of the "Brian" spiking neural network simulator (http://briansimulator.org) and I'm always interested in students who want to work on neuroinformatics projects such as simulation or neural data analysis. Applications are invited for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in biomathematics at Florida State University, beginning August, 2020. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in mathematics or a related discipline and postdoctoral experience in some area of biomathematics. The ideal candidate will have experience working with experimental data, and will pursue collaborations with experimental scientists. The position is joint with the Institute of Molecular Biophysics (IMB), whose core mission is to facilitate interdisciplinary research related to the biological sciences on campus. The IMB hosts an interdisciplinary graduate program in Molecular Biophysics, and there is a separate interdisciplinary graduate program in Neuroscience on campus. The new hire could participate in either or both programs, in addition to the graduate program in biomathematics. The Mathematics Department is also an active participant in a new initiative on Data Science at the university, and with this hire seeks to strengthen the ties between mathematical data science and biomathematics. Florida State University is one of two flagship research universities in the State University System of Florida, and is ranked number 18 among all public universities in the country by U.S. News and World Report. The university enrolls over 40,000 students in the main campus of Tallahassee. Tallahassee is located in north Florida and has a population of roughly 190,000. It is adjacent to the Apalachicola National Forest and about twenty-five miles from the Gulf of Mexico, with easy access to pristine beaches and other natural habitats. Tallahassee has a warm climate, with an annual average high temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit and an annual average low temperature of 56 degrees Fahrenheit. Two PhD student positions in Neuroscience are available at the University of Sussex from 1 February 2020. Project The PhD positions will develop within the project “Peripheral Olfactory Coding: Information Processing outside the Brain” funded by the Leverhulme Trust. This project will investigate early olfactory coding in the model system of the fruit fly Drosophila. Our aim is to test the hypothesis that one key element underlying odour object recognition are non-synaptic interactions between receptor neurons, i.e. information pre-processing outside the brain. Successful candidates will work in one of two areas, depending on interest: Single sensillum recordings (SSRs) on olfactory receptors or behavioural experiments in a wind tunnel. They will be involved in the entire work from experimental design, practical experimentation, selection and execution of data analysis and, depending on interest, computational interpretation in models. You will work closely with Dr Mario Pannunzi, Prof Thomas Nowotny and Prof George Kemenes on this project. Candidate Requirements Candidates should have an MSc or equivalent in natural sciences, ideally in the area of Neuroscience, Physics, Chemistry or Biology. NIH-funded Postdoc / Software Engineer position to work on tool for multiscale modeling of brain circuits

A Postdoc or Software Engineer position is available at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center (Brooklyn, New York) to develop and disseminate NetPyNE, a tool for data-driven multiscale modeling of brain circuits. The position is funded by a recently awarded 5-year NIH grant. The successful candidate would be a salaried employee of the University with a competitive remuneration and benefits package. The position is initially for 1 year with renewal of up to 5 years. Responsibilities: - Improve the software tool to ensure its reliability, robustness and reproducibility. - Collaborate with an external software company to extend the tool's graphical user interface (GUI). - Update the tool's online documentation and develop interactive tutorials. - Organize, prepare and teach conference workshops/tutorials and yearly courses to train users. - Provide ongoing support to neuroscience researchers across the world who use the tool to model different brain regions and phenomena (see www.netpyne.org/models<http://www.netpyne.org/models> and www.netpyne.org/forum<http://www.netpyne.org/forum>) - Encourage, coordinate and manage open source code contributions from interns, graduate students or researchers (usually online via GitHub: https://github.com/Neurosim-lab/netpyne) - Continue ongoing collaborations with other neuroscience initiatives, including Open Source Brain (www.opensourcebrain.org<http://www.opensourcebrain.org>), Neuroscience Gateway (www.nsgportal.org<http://www.nsgportal.org>), Human Neocortical Neurosolver (www.hnn.brown.edu<http://www.hnn.brown.edu>) and Human Brain Project Collaboratory (www.humanbrainproject.eu<http://www.humanbrainproject.eu>). Required: - MSc (or equivalent degree) in Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline. - Expertise programming in Python, including tools for scientific computing (numpy, scipy, pandas, etc), with 5+ years of demonstrable experience. - Experience (3+ years) in collaborative software development as part of a team. - Experience writing unit tests, debugging code, using profiling tools and refactoring existing code bases to improve maintainability. - Proficiency with Git/Github and Linux (shell scripting, ssh, etc) - Experience giving presentations, tutorials and/or product demonstrations. - Spoken and written English language proficiency Desired: - Experience in research/academic environment and/or neuroscience background. - Experience in GUI design/implementation using JavaScript. - Experience with the NEURON simulator using the Python interpreter. - Experience running parallelized large-scale simulations on supercomputers. - Experience in data science, data visualization and machine learning. We are searching for a postdoctoral researcher for a 2-year project (with possibility of extension) on attention and decision-making. Project lead: Jacob L. Orquin (Aarhus University) Collaboration: Raymond Dolan and Hrvoje Stojic (University College London), Peter Todd (Indiana University) Location: Aarhus University (Denmark) The project aims to investigate the relation between natural visual input, eye movement control and decision-making processes. It will involve state-of-the-art computational modelling of vision, attention and decision making, and behavioural experiments using eye-tracking. The postdoc will have ample room for defining the project based on own interests. We are looking for candidates with experience in vision or decision making research, in ideal case comfortable with computational modelling and conducting eye-tracking experiments, and good coding abilities in either R, Python, or Matlab. The Stuttgart Centre for Simulation Science at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, invites applications for a Tenure Track Professorship (W1) "Computational Cognitive Science". The new professor is expected to cover the field of Computational Cognitive Science both in research and teaching, specifically connecting modern data-driven and computational methods for the modeling and simulation of cognitive processes and their applications to human-computer interaction. The position is one of four new professorships that are established at the University of Stuttgart through the DFG Cluster of Excellence EXC 2075 "Data-driven Simulation Science (SimTech)". The professor will be jointly appointed at the Stuttgart Center of Simulation Science and the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and linked closely to the Human-Computer Interaction and Cognitive Systems group. We are looking for an ambitious scientist with international standing who will advance the field of Computational Cognitive Science and its respective foundations in Cognitive Science and Computer Science in close interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers from science and engineering as well as from the humanities and the social sciences. Applicants should have made distinguished contributions in at least one of these research areas: • Cognitive modeling and simulation, especially of visual perception • Data-driven and mathematical / statistical modeling of human behavior • Behavioral experiments and evaluation methods • Decision making, human learning and reasoning • Applications of cognitive models and simulations, e.g. in human-robot interaction, computer vision or immersive environments We encourage excellent young scientists in related areas of (cognitive) neuroscience or psychology, machine learning or artificial intelligence or human-computer interaction to apply.
