Over three weeks, students will delve deeply into the topic of collective behaviour with lectures, hands-on tutorials, and projects, making it a unique and unforgettable experience. The school faculty will cover collective behaviours across a variety of species from worms, drosophila, fish to non – human primates and human. A set of tutorials delving into state-of-the-art quantitative methods used to study collective behaviour will complement the lectures. At the end of the school, students will work on independent projects guided by our resident faculty. Accommodation will be provided and paid by the organizers. The school will provide an overview of theoretical and experimental frameworks used to study a variety of *decision making* processes. NeuroML announcements: upcoming HARMONY hackathon in London and Google Summer of Code projects

We would like to announce 2 upcoming initiatives related to the NeuroML project: a hackathon in London at UCL where you can learn about the model description language and get help converting your model to this standardised format, and 3 Google Summer of Code projects where students or postdocs can be paid for contributing to the NeuroML model development infrastructure. ---- The COMBINE organisation's HARMONY meeting is being held at University College London from April 8-11 this year. Systems Vision Science Virtual Summer School & Symposium: June 19th – July 12th, 2024 -------------------------------- Applications are invited for a <https://summerschool.lizhaoping.org/virtual-systems-vision-science-summer-s…> virtual edition of <https://summerschool.lizhaoping.org/> the Systems Vision Science Summer School and Symposium that took place in Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tuebingen, Germany in August 2023. This year, the virtual edition enables students to attend from afar by formal lectures via Zoom and informal and social communications via a Slack channel. Systems Vision Science combines computational, behavioral, and neuroscience methods to discover functions and algorithms for vision in various brain regions and their implementations in neural circuits. This summer school is designed for everyone interested in gaining a systems level understanding of biological vision. We plan a coherent, graduate-level, syllabus on the integration of experimental data with theory and models. The syllabus content will be very similar to the edition in 2023, the learning format, the delivery, and social interactions will be adjusted to suit the virtual format. Experience or knowledge in (A) computational methods, (B) visual psychophysics, and (C) vision neuroscience, is not required. However, experience in at least one of (A), (B), and (C), and a readiness to learn, is expected. The Summer School will be followed by a Systems Vision Science Virtual Symposium on July 12th. All admitted summer school students will be invited to attend this symposium and are encouraged to submit for a presentation at the symposium. Multiple postdoctoral positions in computational neuroscience (neural coding), Hamburg, Germany

I am opening three fully funded postdoctoral positions in computational neuroscience at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in Hamburg, Germany. We investigate how networks of neurons in the cerebral cortex encode, process and transmit information to generate behaviors such as sensation and decision-making. To address these issues, we develop and use information-theoretic and machine learning methods to study population coding, as well as neural network models to individuate mechanisms for neural information processing and generation of functions. Our laboratory enjoys extensive long-term international collaborations with experimental laboratories, including with Chris Harvey at Harvard Medical School, Wei- Lee at Boston Children’s Hospital, Tommaso Fellin and Alessandro Gozzi at IIT, Mriganka Sur at MIT, as well as collaborations with experimental laboratories in Hamburg (Andreas Engel, Tobias Donner, Ileana Hanganu-Opatz). The laboratory also offers a thriving, ambitious and well-funded research environment (with funds from the NIH Brain Initiative, the Simons Foundation, the European Union, the ERC). The lab provides ample opportunities for advanced training and for personal scientific growth. We seek candidates holding a PhD in a numerate or neuroscientific discipline, with a solid computational background and a keen interest in neuroscience. They must be highly motivated and creative individuals who want to work in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary research environment and be happy to interact with both experimental and theoretical neuroscientists. NeuroDataReHack data reuse workshop and Open Neurodata Showcase

Dear colleagues, The Neurodata Without Borders (NWB) <http://nwb.org/> team is organizing two upcoming events: NeuroDataReHack and the Open Neurodata Showcase. NeuroDataReHack 2024 July 8-12, 2024 Janelia Research Campus, Ashburn, Virginia, USA The goal of NeuroDataReHack is to train participants to generate new insights from existing neurophysiology data through secondary analysis. The DANDI Archive <http://dandiarchive.org/> now has 200+ neurophysiology datasets in the Neurodata Without Borders <http://nwb.org/> format spanning many species, brain areas, task types, and imaging modalities. These include large-scale datasets from the Allen Institute, the MICrONS project, and the International Brain Laboratory, as well as diverse contributions from neuroscience labs around the world. NeuroDataReHack will teach attendees how to maximally utilize the data and computational resources of the DANDI Archive to incorporate existing data into their scientific workflows. (Forwarding on behalf of Warren Grill) We seek a highly-motivated individual to conduct research on computational modeling of cortical neuron activation by transcranial electric and magnetic stimulation (TES and TMS). We have an NIH-funded R01 project to develop and disseminate computational neuron models and their integration with TES and TMS electric field simulations in the popular SimNIBS software package. This project is a collaboration between Dr. Warren Grill and Dr. Angel Peterchev at Duke University and Dr. Axel Thielscher at the Danish Research Center for Magnetic Resonance and Technical University of Denmark. To this end, students will 1) fabricate devices for recording the behavior of experimental organisms (including flies, fish, and humans), 2) learn, under the guidance of the scientists developing these methods, the modern tools to analyze behavioral data from these organisms, and 3) in a week-long independent project develop and conduct a behavioral study of their own design, with the support and guidance of the course instructors and teaching assistants. The course is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from a variety of disciplines, including neuroscience, biology, ethology, computer science, and psychology. This position is dedicated to advancing our understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder through the evaluation of new biomarkers in neuroimaging data. Two postdoctoral research positions and three PhD positions are now available at the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science (SCCS; https://www.sussex.ac.uk/research/ccs/) The SCCS is a University of Sussex Centre of Excellence and an internationally prominent group in consciousness science. The positions are supported by an ERC Advanced Investigator Grant (project CONSCIOUS; 2 postdocs and 2 PhDs) and by the SCCS, via the School of Informatics and Engineering (1 PhD). Hello! We are super happy to announce *School** of Ideas in Neuroscience 2024!* How the knowledge in neuroscience is accumulated? How can we make sense of the terabytes of empirical data we collect every day? In everyday work, we often forget that every scientific endeavour is embedded in a broader theoretical framework. At the same time, most courses and workshops in neuroscience teach us experimental techniques, giving us more tools to gather more data. But, we are not taught how to develop ideas and integrate our research with the existing knowledge. *We believe that theoretical thinking and idea development are skills that can be trained just as new methodologies and data analysis tools*. At our school, we aim to teach participants how to think theoretically to collect data that makes sense and to make sense of collected data! We are looking to recruit a new postdoctoral associate for a large collaborative project on the anatomical development of the human cerebellum. Over three weeks, students will delve deeply into the topic of collective behaviour with lectures, hands-on tutorials, and projects, making it a unique and unforgettable experience. The school faculty will cover collective behaviours across a variety of species from worms, drosophila, fish to non – human primates and human. A set of tutorials delving into state-of-the-art quantitative methods used to study collective behaviour will complement the lectures. At the end of the school, students will work on independent projects guided by our resident faculty. Accommodation will be provided and paid by the organizers. A limited number of travel grants will be provided and a registration fee will be due (400 Euros) once the student is admitted to the Konstanz School of Collective Behaviour. The lab is focused on understanding the neural and computational bases of adaptive and maladaptive decision-making and their relationship to mental health. Current studies investigate how internal states lead to biases in decision-making and how this is exacerbated in mental health disorders. Our approach involves a combination of computational model-based tasks, questionnaires, biosensor data, fMRI, and intracranial recordings. The main models of interest come from neuroeconomics, reinforcement learning, Bayesian inference, signal detection, and information theory. The main tasks for this position include but are not restricted to computational modeling of behavioral data from decision-making and other cognitive tasks, statistical analysis of task-based, clinical, physiological and neuroimaging data, as well as data visualization for the purposes of scientific presentations, public communication, and academic manuscripts. The candidate is expected to demonstrate experience with best practices for the development of well-documented, reproducible programming pipelines for data analysis, that facilitate sharing and collaboration, and live up to our open-science philosophy, as well as to our data management and sharing commitments at NIH. No prior experience with psychiatry research is needed but a familiarity with the constructs and models of interest in the lab (value-based learning and decision-making, metacognition, belief updating, emotion regulation, and/or effort-cost estimation) is desirable, as these are universally important for understanding adaptive healthy functioning and psychiatric disease. This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate with established programming and analytic skills to work at the cutting edge of psychiatry research and computational cognitive neuroscience. Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Neuroscience: Effects of Neuromodulation on Learning in SRNNs

*The 'Biophysics of Neural Computation' group in Nijmegen (PI: dr. Fleur Zeldenrust) is looking for a postdoctoral researcher (26 months) to study the effects of neuromodulators in biologically realistic networks and learning tasks in the Vidi project 'Top-down neuromodulation and bottom-up network computation, a computational study'. You will use cellular and behavioural data gathered by our department over the previous five years on dopamine, acetylcholine and serotonin in mouse barrel cortex, to bridge the gap between single cell, network and behavioural effects.* The aim of this project is to explain the effects of neuromodulation on task performance in biologically realistic spiking recurrent neural networks (SRNNs). You will use biologically realistic learning frameworks, such as force learning, to study how network structure influences task performance. You will build on the single cell data, network models and analysis methods available in our group, and your results will be incorporated into our group's further research to develop and validate efficient coding models of (somatosensory) perception. Staff Scientist 1 (Section on Affective Neuroscience and Pain) Application Deadline: April 4, 2024 Program Overview The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) invites applications for a staff scientist focused on neuroimaging methods and analysis, with a particular focus on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The successful candidate will work with the Section on Affective Neuroscience and Pain<https://www.nccih.nih.gov/research/intramural/section-on-affective-neurosci…> (SANP; Principal Investigator Lauren Atlas, Ph.D.) as part of a growing research program focused on identifying brain mechanisms underlying psychological modulation of pain and emotion in health and disease. The successful candidate will work closely with the Principal Investigator and fellows to advance SANP’s research program through data acquisition, data analysis and curation, and mentorship of trainees. Ongoing projects examine relationships between pain and emotion, how expectations shape learning and pain, and how social factors shape clinical outcomes. Projects are multimodal, integrating fMRI, psychophysiology, and pharmacological methodologies. In addition to supporting lab members and ongoing studies, the staff scientist can develop and lead independent projects in collaboration with the Principal Investigator. Upcoming projects will incorporate high field imaging (7T-fMRI), simultaneous positron emission tomography (PET)-MRI, and/or magnetoencephalography (MEG). This two-week school will teach participants to use the Nengo simulation package to build state-of-the-art cognitive and neural models to run both in simulation and on neuromorphic hardware. Summer school participants will be given on-site access to neuromorphic hardware and will learn to run high-level applications using Nengo! More generally, Nengo provides users with a versatile and powerful environment for designing cognitive and neural systems and has been used to build what is currently the world's largest functional brain model, Spaun, which includes spiking deep learning, reinforcement learning, adaptive motor control, and cognitive control networks. Post-doc or Research Engineer position offer: Computational modeling of genetic mutations at cellular level

*Context.* Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) are a group of severe rare diseases where the combined effect of seizures, most often drug resistant, and the non-seizures consequences of the disease etiology, often genetic, entail a debilitating encephalopathy with drastic effects on the neurodevelopmental, psychiatric, and motor abilities of the patients. DEEs due to potassium channel mutations (K-DEEs) are emblematic of this disease presentation. *Rationale.* The mechanisms underlying the relationship between i) the molecular effect of a gene mutation (KCNB1/KCNT1/KCNA2) on specific voltage gated potassium channel function, and ii) the patient-specific phenotypes observed in scalp-recorded EEG signals remain elusive. Computational models inspired from neuronal physiology is now recognized as a most efficient way to bridge the gap between i) changes occurringat the level of neurons and neuronal circuits and ii) electroencephalographic (EEG) signals recorded in patients containing markers of the underlying pathology. *Objective.* The objective of the proposed research position is to design novel neuro-inspired models taking into account the molecular effect of a gene mutation on the specific voltage-gated potassium (K) channel function and the specific phenotypes observed in patients (scalp-recorded EEG signals) and in genetically-modified mice (local field potentials) in which downregulation or upregulation of K channels is induced. *Methods*. Detailed multicompartment models (i.e. including dendrites, soma and axon) will be developed. They will be based on Hodgkin and Huxley's (HH) formalism. They will describe both passive (membrane capacitance, axial resistivity, leakage conductance, and membrane time constant) and active (voltage-gated and ligand-gated ion channels) membrane properties. The channel pathogenic variants of KCNB1/KCNT1/KCNA2 mutations identified in 2 other work packages (1 & 2) will be inserted in the membrane in order to study the impact of the channel mutation on the firing rate curves of considered neuron subtypes, typically pyramidal neurons (PYR), somatostatin (SST-), parvalbumin (PV-), and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP-) positive interneurons. Optimization methods will be developed for identifying optimal parameters minimizing the distance between real and simulated electrophysiological signals (LFPs). Models will use the Hodgkin & Huxley formalism. They will be developed in Python. They will extend already-existing models at cellular level. The Post-doc/Engineer fellow (PhD level) will preferably have a strong background in computational neuroscience/systems biology or in electrical engineering with experience in bio-signal processing. Computational neuroscience PhD position in the Mejias lab at Amsterdam

Dear all, The Mejias lab and the Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Group at the University of Amsterdam are seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate for a PhD position in Computational Neuroscience. The position falls under the Horizon Health Europe Consortium grant “Virtual Brain Twins for Personalized Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders”. This Consortium constitutes a large collaboration between different European institutions, aiming to develop personalized brain simulation software (“virtual brain twins”) to improve the diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia. The main objective of this PhD project is to develop a biologically realistic computational model of the human brain, and use it to study alterations in brain activity associated with schizophrenia. Such model will make use of local neural mass models (developed by our Consortium partners) to simulate multiple brain areas, and will bring them together using structural connectivity data from human subjects. The model will be then used to explore the effects of schizophrenia-related alterations in brain dynamics and function, and to derive patient-specific virtual brain simulations to improve diagnosis and explore treatments in collaboration with clinical Consortium partners. The project will be supervised by Dr. Jorge Mejias, principal investigator in computational neuroscience and leader of the Dutch component of the Consortium, and by Prof. Dr. Cyriel Pennartz, head of the Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Group. You will closely collaborate with other Consortium members, particularly with the team of Prof. Viktor Jirsa at Aix-Marseille University, and will also benefit from interactions with local colleagues including other theoretical, computational and experimental neuroscientists at the Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Group. We are looking for candidates with: • a Master's Degree in computational neuroscience or closely related field, with a focus on modeling biological neural systems. Alternatively, a Master Degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computational Science or a closely related field, and a clear background or affinity for brain modeling; • strong quantitative and analytical skills, including calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, dynamical systems, stochastic processes and complex systems; • strong computational/programming skills (preferably with Python), including numerical methods for differential equations, machine learning and data analysis; • a keen, demonstrated interest in neuroscience research; • experience with computational neuroscience modeling projects, with virtual brain simulation engines (e.g. TVB), and/or with high performance computers is considered an advantage; • ability to read and understand relevant neuroscientific, cognitive and clinical literature and use experimental data to build models; • ability to communicate effectively in English, within a multidisciplinary team and in an international context; We offer a temporary contract for 38 hours per week for the duration of 4 years, which will culminate in the defense of your PhD thesis. We will also draft an educational plan that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings, and you will also assist in teaching and other activities in the lab. The gross monthly salary will range from €2,770 in the first year to €3,539 in the last year, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week). Early Sharp Waves (eSPWs) are the predominant structured activity pattern in the developing entorhinalhippocampal network of neonatal rodents, which is thought to be essential for the formation of the connections between the entorhinal cortex (EC) and the hippocampus. Considerable amount of data on cellular, synaptic and network aspects of EC-driven eSPWs in the neonatal hippocampus has been accumulated recently in the Khazipov team at INMED, yet the generative mechanisms of eSPWs remain elusive. One of the central hypotheses involves the different modes of operation of the early vs late EC-hippocampal network, which is enabled by delated development of GABAergic inhibition and large temporal integration window of excitatory inputs from EC or other hippocampal subnetworks. To this end, students will 1) fabricate devices for recording the behavior of experimental organisms (including flies, fish, and humans), 2) learn, under the guidance of the scientists developing these methods, the modern tools to analyze behavioral data from these organisms, and 3) in a week-long independent project develop and conduct a behavioral study of their own design, with the support and guidance of the course instructors and teaching assistants. The course is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from a variety of disciplines, including neuroscience, biology, ethology, computer science, and psychology. The Barcelona summer school for Advanced Modelling of Behavior (BAMB! <http://www.bambschool.org>) teaches advanced techniques in model-based analysis of behavior (humans and other species) to cognitive and computational neuroscientists at PhD and early career levels. This will be achieved through structured lectures, talks, hands-on tutorials and group projects aimed at making knowledge obtained directly applicable to the participants' own research. We want the trainees to acquire both the conceptual basis and the technical skills that will enable them to pursue a full modelling approach on their own when they come back to their lab. The course is intended for PhD students and postdocs in cognitive, systems, and computational neuroscience with a solid background in computational/quantitative analysis to benefit maximally from the advanced training offered by the course. This is a computational neuroscience course, centered on student projects that leverage the wealth of Allen Institute data, particularly focused on neurophysiology, population dynamics, behavior, and connectivity data. Co-organized by the Allen Institute and the University of Washington’s Computational Neuroscience Center, the course takes place at UW’s Friday Harbor Laboratory in the San Juan Islands. This 2-week residential program is intended for researchers at the PhD student and postdoctoral level with an interest in developing the intersection of their scientific knowledge and their computational skills. Hi everyone, We made a free, open course on neuroscience for people with a machine learning or other quantitative background. You can use it to get started in computational neuroscience or just to indulge your neurocuriousity. I believe that neuroscience and ML can learn from each other and do better together than on their own. The course has 34 short videos from introductory topics right up to recent discoveries we still don't fully understand. We also have practical exercises focussed on open ended discovery, fully compatible with Google Colab. Systems Vision Science combines computational, behavioral, and neuroscience methods to discover functions and algorithms for vision in various brain regions and their implementations in neural circuits. This summer school is designed for everyone interested in gaining a systems level understanding of biological vision. We plan a coherent, graduate-level, syllabus on the integration of experimental data with theory and models. The syllabus content will be very similar to the edition in 2023, the learning format, the delivery, and social interactions will be adjusted to suit the virtual format. Experience or knowledge in (A) computational methods, (B) visual psychophysics, and (C) vision neuroscience, is not required. You can create cloud based, persistent workspaces which contain models and data from a number of sources (https://v2.opensourcebrain.org/repositories) including: - All *OSBv1* projects incorporating NeuroML and PyNN models - All *ModelDB* entries - All *BRAIN Initiative DANDI Archive* datasets containing NWB files Inbuilt applications which can open these workspaces include: *- NetPyNE UI*, a 3D graphical application for neuronal simulations (NeuroML compliant) *- NWB Explorer* for opening and visualising data in NWB files *- JupyterLab*, a full interactive Python environment, with a number of computational neuroscience, data analysis and machine learning packages preinstalled. Hi, Within the Lullabyte.org consortium, one additional PhD position needs to filled, combining neuroscience, musicology and AI. The project will investigate the effects of generative music on sleep, as measured by wearable sleep EEG. The position will be integrated into the highly collaborative and interdisciplinary European Marie Curie Network Lullabyte.org, working on the intersection of musicology, sleep research, and AI. It will be mostly based at Endel.io in Berlin, with secondments to the Technical University Dresden and the Donders Institute in Nijmegen/NL. Requirements: training in both music and neuroscience, with a master degree or equivalent in one of the following (or related) fields: musicology, music technology, computer music, neuroscience, psychology. Imagine that you need to catch a bus to return home after work. Will you decide to run as fast as possible to catch the first incoming bus? Or will you walk slowly to save your energy after an exhausting day, at the risk of missing this first bus and arriving late at home? Foraging tasks are emerging as crucial models for naturalistic decision making in rodents . On mechanistic level, those tasks give us the opportunity to understand how individual sensitivities to time and effort drive variability in the strategy of rodents facing an explore vs exploit dilemma. If those questions are of interest to you , there is an opening for a PhD position at the Centuri Turing Center for living systems in Marseille where the project is advised by David Robbe ( INMED, Marseille) , Eloy Christophe ( IRPHE, Marseille) and Ahmed El Hady ( Cluster for Advanced Study of Collective Behavior, Konstanz ). The project will combine theoretical and experimental approaches to understand how foraging strategies vary in terms of their sensitivities to time and effort during a variety of experimental conditions. Do you want to know what mice think about when they are on mushrooms? Are you interested in using computational models to compare how mice and humans think? The Behavioural Neurogenomics Lab (https://www.bagotlab.org) at McGill University is looking for a highly motivated computational neuroscience postdoc to lead a newly funded collaboration examining the neural bases of effects of stress and psychedelics on reward processing in mice and humans. This is a fully funded position intersecting computational modeling, neural circuit interrogation and robust behavioural paradigms. Based in Montreal, the candidate will work closely with the Noise Lab at Universite de Montreal (https://ebitzlab.com/) and the Mayo Lab ( https://profiles.ucalgary.ca/leah-mayo) at University of Calgary to develop new approaches for the comparative study of the neural processing of reward. The candidate must have a PhD in computational neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science or a quantitative discipline as well as fluency in Matlab or Python and experience in statistical data analysis and an interest in translational or comparative research. Ideally, the candidate would have some background in cognitive and/or reinforcement learning models, generalized linear models, hidden Markov models or probabilistic graphical models. Anticipated start date April 1, 2024 for an initial term of 1 year with the possibility of renewal.
