This contains as a corollary the first complete wiring diagram of a visual system, which has been used to identify all 200+ cell types that are intrinsic to the Drosophila optic lobe. About half of these cell types were previously unknown, and less than 20% have ever been recorded by a physiologist. I will argue that plausible functions for many cell types can be guessed by interpreting the wiring diagram. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. Intelligence in nature is very diverse; it can be discussed in terms of the intelligence of chimps, dolphins, and many other animals and even the collective intelligence of very simple life forms such as ants. The concept of intelligence is being adopted in many domains of science. From practical and theoretical perspectives, an essential current research direction that is under examination by a very large number of scientists worldwide is the development of artificial systems, also called agent-based systems, which can be either individual agents or cooperative multiagent systems. These systems are embedded in the environment, possess a certain degree of autonomy, and are capable of perceiving the environment and executing actions in it. Intelligence in agent-based systems can emerge through advanced problem-solving abilities. To develop these intelligent systems, techniques such as supervised learning and unsupervised learning play pivotal roles. Supervised learning involves training systems on labeled datasets, enabling them to map inputs to outputs and improve their predictions or classifications over time. These methods are extensively used in applications such as image recognition, natural language processing, and medical diagnosis. On the other hand, unsupervised learning enables systems to identify patterns and structures in unlabeled data, facilitating clustering, anomaly detection, and exploratory data analysis. A more recent paradigm, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and cache-augmented generation (CAG), combines retrieval- and cache-based methods with generative models to enhance intelligent systems, producing highly contextualized and accurate responses or actions. These approaches are instrumental in developing advanced systems for domains such as conversational AI, knowledge management, and decision support. Intelligent agent-based systems have many real-world applications, including the health sciences and industry. The number and diversity of intelligent systems are increasing rapidly. In this context, the great challenge consists of creating increasingly intelligent systems. Another critical challenge, approached by only a few researchers worldwide, is the development of universal metrics, including black-box-based intelligence metrics, to measure the intelligence of these systems. Such advances could allow for the comparison of systems based on their intelligence. In cooperative multiagent systems, intelligence can be assessed at the system level; this is known as collective intelligence. Even in very simple cooperative multiagent systems, agents may interact nonlinearly at various decision points, resulting in emergent complexity and intelligence at the system level. This Special Issue aims to establish a solid foundation for future research through a collection of papers that advance the field by elaborating on theories, designing applications, and presenting surveys regarding the next generation of increasingly intelligent systems. The areas of research covered in these papers could include the study of self-organization, emergence, hybridization, scalability, robustness, measuring machine intelligence, and the integration of advanced paradigms such as supervised learning, unsupervised learning, retrieval-augmented generation, and cache-augmented generation. Dear all, I am excited to announce an opening for a PhD position at the Chair for Sensory Neuroengineering, Department Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering at FAU in Germany. The PhD student will work on an innovative project in the neurobiology of communication. The project will investigate neurobiological mechanisms and electrophysiological markers of speech comprehension. The PhD student will therefore develop and employ EEG hyperscanning, in which the neural activity of several subjects engaged in a conversation will be measured simultaneously. They will furthermore develop AI algorithms to analyse the obtained data. The results will contribute to better customization and real-time adaptation of hearing aids to their wearers. FAU is the most innovative university in Germany and ranks second among the most innovative European universities. It is located in one of the most attractive regions in Germany. Dear all, We are looking for a web designer to join our wonderful design team, and help build the online platform for these activities. That person would liaise with our head of design, two content designers, web developer, and webmaster. Thinking About Thinking <http://www.thinkingaboutthinking.org/> is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that aims to cultivate and spread new computational ideas about intelligence in an open-access manner. We run Summits <http://www.algopreneurship.ai/> on Open Problems for AI and an annual conference on the Mathematics of Neuroscience and AI <http://www.neuromonster.org/>, and will soon be launching a range of online material to complement the in-person events. We are looking for someone with good experience in website design (e.g., Squarespace) that is passionate about and currently studying a degree related to intelligence (or has done in the past). This is a great organization to blend your academic and professional interests, in this case in design! Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce the CNS*2025 Workshop “Modeling extracellular potentials: principles, methods, and applications” which will take place on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in Florence, Italy. Simulating large-scale neural activity is a key step in understanding brain dynamics and in linking in silico models to experimentally measurable signals such as LFP, EEG, and MEG. These simulations, ranging from detailed biophysical reconstructions to simplified proxies, enable us to connect microscale neuronal activity with meso- and macro-scale brain signals. They offer powerful tools to interpret experimental data, refine analytical techniques, and investigate brain function. Recent developments have underscored the clinical and theoretical relevance of such models, helping to elucidate mechanisms underlying neural oscillations, excitation-inhibition balance, and biomarkers of neurological disorders including epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease. This workshop will showcase state-of-the-art methodologies, and a wide array of applications for brain signals simulation. These systems can exhibit a manifold of global fixed points capable of implementing sophisticated input-output mappings, which we characterize analytically. Learning from extensive datasets is achieved through the stabilization of fixed points via a fully distributed and local learning process, implemented at the single-neuron level. This simple mechanism yields performance comparable to that of conventional feedforward deep neural networks trained using gradient-based methods. The effectiveness of the model stems from the dense and accessible manifolds of stable fixed points, which encode the internal representations of data. Dear Colleagues, We are excited to announce the upcoming CNS*2025 Workshop "Brains and AI", to be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in Florence, Italy. This workshop will explore the intersection of neuroscience and artificial intelligence - bringing together researchers applying AI to brain data and those leveraging insights from neuroscience to build better AI systems. https://users.sussex.ac.uk/~tn41/CNS2025_workshop/ Advances in neuroscience techniques have dramatically increased the volume of data we can now collect from animal and human brains. However, this surge in data has introduced new challenges in extracting meaningful insights. Fortunately, these developments have coincided with breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI), which holds the potential to transform how we analyze and utilize scientific information. While there is significant potential here, we are just starting to figure out how to apply modern AI models to interpret and process scientific data, and significant challenges remain. The trend of applying AI to better understand the brain concurs with another reviving trend: applying knowledge from neuroscience to developing new AI. Indeed, despite the tremendous progress, the existing generation of AI shows significant limitations, including a lack of continual learning, poor generalization, dependence on enormous amounts of data for training, bias, and safety problems. These are features where the biological brain excels, highlighting the strong need to learn once more from neuroscience how to develop the next generation of AI. The proposed workshop will combine these two complementary trends, bringing experts from the field together to discuss how AI can facilitate new scientific discoveries and how knowledge of the brain can help improve AI. The CSNG Lab <https://csng.mff.cuni.cz/> at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the Charles University is seeking a highly motivated *Postdoctoral Researcher* to join our team to work on *digital twin model of visual system. *Funded by the JUNIOR Post-Doc Fund <https://cuni.cz/UKEN-178.html>, this position offers an exciting opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research at the intersection of systems neuroscience, computational modeling and AI. *Project description:* Modern deep-learning techniques have transformed visual neuroscience by substantially improving the ability of models to predict cortical neuron responses to unseen visual stimuli. However, current deep-learning methods have two major shortcomings. First, they focus on predicting only the average neural response, failing to capture the fine temporal dynamics generated within recurrent neural populations. Second, these models rely on standard "off-the-shelf" architectures optimized for efficient training rather than reflecting the biological substrate under study. As a result, they function as black boxes, making it difficult to interpret the learned representations in terms of how visual processing is organized and implemented in biological neural circuits. These limitations hinder the ability of deep-learning models to provide meaningful insights into the principles governing vision and translate them to clinical applications such as brain-machine-interface systems. To address these challenges, in this project *we will develop novel modular, multi-layer recurrent neural **network (RNN) architectures that directly mirror the architecture of the primary visual cortex.* Our models will establish a one-to-one mapping between individual neurons at different stages of the visual pathway and their artificial counterparts. They will explicitly incorporate functionally specific lateral recurrent interactions, excitatory and inhibitory neuronal classes, complex single-neuron transfer functions with adaptive mechanisms, synaptic depression, and others. We will first train our new RNNs on synthetic data generated by a state-of-the-art biologically realistic recurrent spiking model of the primary visual cortex developed in our group. After we establish the proof-of-concept on the synthetic data, we will translate our models to publicly available mouse and macaque data, as well as additional data from our experimental collaborators. *What do we offer:* We are the Computational Systems Neuroscience Group (CSNG) <https://csng.mff.cuni.cz/> based at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University, Prague. The main goal of our group is to identify computations implemented in the neural system that underlies sensory perception, as well as applying this knowledge to the design of stimulation protocols for visual prosthetic systems. To that end, we build models of visual systems at various levels of abstraction using a variety of computational techniques including, but not limited to, machine learning and large-scale biologically plausible spiking neural network simulations. The position is *fully funded for 2 years, *and comes with a salary equivalent to ~2400 EUR/month. Whether these coding dimensions causally drive decisions or merely reflect them remains unclear. Here, we investigate the mechanistic role of residual dimensions—neural activity patterns orthogonal to coding subspaces—in shaping choice behavior. We developed a recurrent neural network model that fits large-scale neural recordings and behavior, disentangling coding and residual subspaces at the single-trial level. Applied to anterior lateral motor cortex (ALM) and motor thalamus recordings during a delayed response task, the model reveals that perturbations along residual dimensions—but not the choice axis—reliably flip decisions, recapitulating a recent paradoxical effect observed with targeted two-photon optogenetic manipulations: activity outside the task-coding subspace exerts stronger causal influence on behavior than perturbations aligned with the choice axis. These effects arise from transient, high-dimensional feedforward trajectories shaped by residual dimensions and converging onto discrete attractor states. Crucially, residual dimensions drive dynamics in coding dimensions, rather than the reverse. To probe the trial-to-trial impact of residual activity, we modeled single-trial deviations as low-dimensional inputs that shift trajectories relative to trial-averaged dynamics. This framework captures decision variability mechanistically: errors emerge when fluctuations in residual dimensions steer dynamics toward incorrect attractors. Extending the model to include thalamocortical loops, we find that inter-area communication operates primarily through residual—not choice-selective—pathways. Together, these results challenge the classical view that decisions are governed by low-dimensional, task-aligned dynamics alone, revealing a causal and computationally essential role for residual dimensions in decision-making. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. We will consider a novel test for candidate theories, the “participation criterion”: End-directedness of behavior entails that, in principle, it is distinguishable by measurement from one without end-directedness. But how can this criterion ever be satisfied by artificial agents? We will evaluate the possibility that end-directedness will show up as a local increase in unpredictability of system dynamics, which has the global effect of stochastically nudging the system toward aligning with the goal state. *BIO: *Dr. Tom Froese is an Associate Professor at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) in Japan, where he leads the Embodied Cognitive Science Unit (ECSU). Postdoc/PhD position in Computational Neuroscience in the Theory of Neural Circuits group at the Institute of Neuroinformatics under the supervision of Katharina Wilmes: We are looking for highly motivated Postdocs or PhD students, interested in computational neuroscience, specifically addressing questions concerning neural circuits underlying perception and learning. The perfect candidate has a strong background in math, physics or computer science (or equivalent), programming skills (python), and a strong interest in biological and neural systems. A background in computational neuroscience is ideal, but not mandatory. Research topic: Our brain maintains an internal model of the world, based on which it can make predictions about sensory information. These predictions are useful for perception and learning in the uncertain and changing environments in which we evolved. The link between high-level normative theories and cellular-level observations of prediction errors and representations under uncertainty is still missing. The lab uses computational and mathematical tools to model cortical circuits and neural networks on different scales. Our lab builds computational models of how the brain processes and understands natural language. We are interested in experts' perspectives on the functional organization in the brain with respect to language. Any adult researcher who is actively conducting research in language neuroscience or relevant fields is welcome to participate in the study. You will be asked to fill out a 5-minute survey that asks about your opinion on potential properties of language stimuli, and how important they are for understanding language processing in the brain. However, recent experiments conducted in large spaces across multiple species have revealed a much more irregular neural code than suggested by the classical view. Indeed, place cells in large environments typically fire in multiple locations, and the multiple firing fields of individual cells, as well as those of the entire population, vary considerably in size and shape. We recently showed that a simple mathematical model, wherein firing fields are generated by thresholding realizations of a random Gaussian process, accounts for the statistical properties of place fields in precise quantitative detail. This model captures the observed statistics of field sizes and positions and generates new quantitative predictions on field shapes and topologies. Moreover, these statistics are universal across species, but sensitive to the size and dimensionality of the environment. We quantitatively verified these predictions using multiple recent datasets from bats and rodents in one, two, and three dimensions, across both small and large environments. For the general content structure, we plan to start from a modeler's perspective and then progressively move towards more data-driven approaches. The first session will explore seizure mechanisms through biophysical and neural mass models at different temporal and spatial scales, investigating, among others, ionic dynamics and network plasticity. It aims to understand seizure initiation, progression, and duration. The second session will focus on the application of computational models to EEG data recorded in epileptic patients. First, it will discuss the promising advances in seizure monitoring using wearable devices and long-term EEG recordings, particularly focusing on the use of data features inspired by concepts derived from mathematical modeling in epilepsy. Then, it will move on to advanced parameter inference methods to tailor models to individual data samples in order to provide mechanistic insight. The third session will examine stimulation-based strategies to terminate or prevent seizures. There will be a focus on recent advancements in closed-loop and low-frequency electrical stimulation to control seizures. Pre-registrations are open and abstracts may be submitted. The main Course emphasis is methodological. One goal is to illustrate the wealth and diversity of Systems Biology issues for scientists from Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. Another goal is to allow biologists motivated by Systems Biology to go deeper into methodological issues in order to facilitate their contacts with scientists from the formal sciences. *Multiscale brain rhythms under healthy and epileptic conditions: computational modeling insights for clinical applications* Neural activity in the brain operates across multiple scales, encompassing both spatial and temporal dynamics. In patients with epilepsy, however, cognitive impairments are often linked to disruptions in these neural mechanisms, particularly through interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs). This project aims to uncover new insights into the link between electrophysiology and attention deficits, one of the most prevalent cognitive impairments in patients with epilepsy, by exploring the role of IEDs. The PhD candidate will develop a comprehensive neocortical population model. The model will be validated on electrophysiological signals recorded in epileptic patients, and its dynamics will be studied to detail the mechanisms of multiple timescale interactions giving rise to healthy and pathological activity. The research project is at the interface between computational, cognitive, and clinical neurosciences. The candidate will preferably have some background in applied mathematics or computational neuroscience/systems biology. Programming skills in Python and knowledge of dynamical systems are required. Knowledge in cognitive neuroscience, electrophysiology and/or EEG analysis would be an asset. The brain remembers episodes not in isolation but with their contextual relationships, such as spatial or temporal proximity. This is an essential feature of the brain’s memory, but the underlying mechanism is yet to be explored. Cell assemblies, or engrams, may provide neural representations for such relationships. First, I will show a class of associative memory models that encode and retrieve multiple memory contents linked by an arbitrary graph structure through experience and demonstrate the crucial role of the balance between two inhibitory subnetwork types in the flexible retrieval of relational memories. Secondly, I propose a theoretical framework to generate a cognitive map, i.e., neural representations of relationships between memory items. This framework aims at the predictive function of the hippocampus and is based on successor representations proposed for reinforcement learning. Intriguingly, the model provides a unified account for grid cells in spatial navigation and concept cells in natural language processing. Finally, I will discuss another crucial role of the hippocampal memory system, memory replay, in a spiking neural network model. Unlike the conventional associative memory models that maintain attractor memory states, this model attempts to maximize the capacity of replayed activity patterns. Our model suggests the crucial role of inhibitory plasticity in optimizing spontaneous memory replay. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. It will bring together international and local students under the tutelage of the world's leading experts in the field. Like its international sister courses, this three-week summer school aims to teach central ideas, methods, and practices of modern computational neuroscience through a combination of lectures and hands-on project work. Mornings will be devoted to lectures on topics across the breadth of computational neuroscience, including experimental underpinnings and machine learning analogues. The rest of the day will be spent working on research projects under the close supervision of expert tutors and faculty. Individual research projects will focus on the modeling of neurons, neural systems, behavior, the analysis of state-of-the-art neural data, and the development of theories to explain experimental observations. It also includes a week focused on neuroscience-inspired machine learning! Who should apply? This course is aimed at Masters and early-PhD level students, though Honors or advanced Undergraduates may also apply. Postdoctoral students who can motivate why the course would benefit them are also encouraged to apply. Students should have sufficient quantitative skills (e.g., a background in mathematics, physics, computer science, statistics, engineering, or related fields). Some knowledge of neural biology will be useful but not essential. Two Ph.D. positions are available under the supervision of Timothée Proix in the Neural Dynamics Lab (https://nldab.ch) at the Institute of Neuroinformatics, ETH Zurich, in Switzerland. The project consists in modeling neural computations involved in speech processing. The candidates will develop theoretical models, using dynamical systems and machine learning tools. The models will be fit to single-cell intracranial recordings from human participants. Candidates should have a strong background in physics, computer science, mathematics, or related fields. Programming skills in Python and knowledge of dynamical systems are required. Previous experience in neuroscience will be appreciated. The research will be conducted at the Institute of Neuroinformatics in Zurich, a vibrant and stimulating environment for neuroscience research. The positions are funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, and salaries are in accordance with their guidelines. The ideal start date is September 2025, with some flexibility. The starting point is an analysis of the human self that sees it as brought into being by the activity of a set of transient self-processes instantiated by the brain and body. I propose that we can better understand this self-system, and thereby this core aspect of the human condition, through embodied (robotic) modelling. The self begins with the brain’s discovery of the body, of its ability to control it, and of the distinctive dynamics of interoceptive compared to exteroceptive sensory signals. These processes give rise to a minimal sense of self as a bounded agent, upon which layers of reflective self-processes are constructed that extend the self in space and time and that allow the recognition of other selves. Some of this energy is used for neural information processing, however, fruitfly experiments have shown that also learning is metabolically costly. We will present estimates of this cost and introduce a general model of this cost, and compare it to costs in computers. Next, we turn to a supervised artificial network setting and explore a number of strategies that can save energy needed for plasticity. Either by modifying the objective function, by restricting plasticity, or by using less costly transient forms of plasticity. Finally, we will discuss adaptive strategies and possible relevance for biological learning. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. PhD Programme in Theoretical Neuroscience and Machine Learning Deadline: Tuesday 27 May 2025 The Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit is a leading research centre focused on theoretical neuroscience and machine learning. We study (un)supervised and reinforcement learning in brains and machines; inference, coding and neural dynamics; Bayesian and kernel methods, and deep learning; with applications to the analysis of perceptual processing and cognition, neural data, signal and image processing, machine vision, network data and nonparametric hypothesis testing. The Unit provides a unique opportunity for a critical mass of theoreticians to interact closely with one another and with researchers at the Sainsbury WellcomeCentre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour (SWC), the Centre for Computational Statistics and Machine Learning (CSML) and related UCL departments such as Computer Science; Statistical Science; Artificial Intelligence; the ELLIS Unit at UCL; Neuroscience; and the nearby Alan Turing and Francis Crick Institutes. Our PhD programme provides a rigorous preparation for a research career. Students complete a 4-year PhD in either machine learning or theoretical/computational neuroscience, with minor emphasis in the complementary field. Dear Colleague In 1995 Mainen and Sejnowski published a striking result showing neurons in mammalian neocortex are capable of producing precise, reliable spike trains in response to fluctuating inputs. This work inspired sustained inquiry into the role of spike timing in sensory, motor and cognitive processes, including learning and memory, as well as theoretical investigations into neural coding, plasticity, and the mechanisms of precise spike timing. In recognition of the 30th anniversary of this seminal paper, Biological Cybernetics invites submissions to a special article collection on the topic “Neuronal Spike Timing: Precision, Reliability, and the Neural Code from 1995-2025.” Whether you have contributed to past research in this area and would like to write a retrospective review, or if you are actively pursuing new research building on spike timing, we encourage you to submit an article to this collection. The project will collect electrophysiological and electrochemical data from human basal ganglia during deep brain stimulator implantations while patients listen to and entrain movement to auditory rhythms. Data will be used to evaluate and develop models of the role of dopamine in rhythm perception, movement, and prediction. The Mnemosyne team of the Inria centre of the University of Bordeaux (France) is looking for a talented postdoctoral fellow with confirmed competences in the domain of Machine Learning for the development of a modeling framework of Metacognition . Metacognition is the cognitive process by which, instead of just learning to associate a response or a behavior with a situation, animals (and mainly primates) monitor the functioning (and particularly errors) of simple cognitive processes, learn to inhibit automatic responses and promote instead contextually appropriate behavioral rules. Better understanding and modeling this process is important for several reasons. In cognitive neuroscience , it paves the way to exploring higher cognitive functions like reasoning, imagination and other kinds of deliberation-based thoughts. In Artificial Intelligence , it stands on the same grounds as Generative AI and proposes different processes and algorithms that might remedy several weaknesses of GenAI and suggest innovative brain-inspired extensions. Located in Bordeaux (France), the role of the postdoctoral fellow to be recruited is to participate to a research program, under the following axes: Axis 1: Specification of Metacognition and its main computational mechanisms: Metacognition is generally described through three main mechanisms: (i) the possibility to monitor cues indicating difficulties in the process of problem solving (errors or conflicts between resources), in order to inhibit elementary default responses, (ii) working memory to keep in sustained activity the different aspects to be integrated (goals and subgoals, predictions, constraints) and (iii) cognitive flexibility corresponding to new goals and contextual rules that can be learned and integrated in the process of problem solving. Existing models (including from our team) indicate possible correspondence with cerebral circuitries and adaptive operations. Nevertheless, they are many and split these general mechanisms in different pieces which are not always consistent and may differ under several aspects. A major contribution will be to carry out a thorough analysis of these elements, to propose a synthesis associating both a precise description of the mechanisms and a map of their functional dependencies. Axis 2: Definition of relevant tasks in the domain of visual reasoning: Although many standard tasks have been defined and shared for simple sensorimotor control, it is not yet the case for cognitive control, generally corresponding to much more complex behaviors. A variety of tasks have been proposed in models evoked above but they differently integrate fundamental constituents such as hierarchical and temporal dependencies. In a similar view of standardization as in the axis above, the goal will be consequently to enumerate properties that have to be assessed when developing such metacognitive models and propose or design corresponding tasks. Subsequently, the postdoctoral fellow will work on integrating the insights from Axis 1 and task definitions in this Axis, with an architecture that integrates selected mechanisms from the different frameworks, particularly under the perspective of extending and evaluating models proposed in our team with novel properties. Axis 3: Organization of an international network of collaboration on the topic: We have already begun to identify and contact international (mainly European) teams working on the topic and willing to contribute to the elaboration of such a roadmap, toward more ambitious international projects. We are super happy to announce the next *Workshop of Ideas in Neuroscience, that will take place **at the Paris Brain Institute, June 2–4th.* This time, the topic is *Decoding the brain: from methods to meaning*. Applying machine learning and other models to decode behavioral parameters from neural activity is now a standard procedure in neuroscience. These approaches are often used to demonstrate that a specific neural population processes information related to behavior, or that certain patterns of brain activity represent external stimuli. However, this framework has not been without its critics. The notion that the brain’s primary role is to encode and decode information has been questioned by neuroscientists and philosophers alike. Ambiguity often surrounds the concept of "encoding," including what is meant by it and the criteria required for neural activity to be considered as encoding a particular feature. The aim of this workshop will be to perform an in-depth analysis and discussion of this framework and see examples of how, when, and why it should be applied – or challenged. The Valentin Braitenberg Award honors outstanding scientific achievements in the field of computational neuroscience. Following Baritenberg's scientific tradition, special attention is paid to theoretical studies that reveal functional significance of brain structure and their neuronal dynamics. The awardee receives €5.000 prize money, donated by the Autonome Provinz Bozen Südtirol, as well as an invitation to the Bernstein Conference 2025 (including registration fee, travel- and accommodation expenses). *My lab is looking for a PhD candidate in Modelling Predictive Error Responses:* https://www.ru.nl/en/working-at/job-opportunities/phd-position-in-computati… For the NWO project ‘DBI2 <https://dbi2.nl/>’ we are looking for a PhD candidate to study predictive error responses in the auditory cortex. The main goal is to design an experimental approach to distinguish between two alternative theories of predictive coding and processing. Predictive coding and predictive processing are compelling theories to explain brain function. The idea that the brain continually maintains and updates an internal model of the outside world, and compares the incoming input with the expectations generated by this model, can explain many phenomena including adaptive behaviour and sensory effects such as oddball responses. However, until now there is no consensus on how such predictive coding could be implemented in real neural tissue. Importantly, there are two alternative theories on how error signals in predictive processing could be coded in neural signals: either as (1) top down signals from ‘higher order’ brain areas (hierarchical predictive coding, [2]) or (2) local signals, resulting in membrane potentials reflecting error signals ([3], for a review, see [1]). The goal of the research presented here, under the primary supervision of Dr Zeldenrust, is to design an experimental approach to distinguish between these two theoretical approaches. Measuring error signals in neural tissue is experimentally challenging. Therefore, a direct exchange between theory and experiment is needed, so that hypotheses and specific predictions about which neurons to record from and stimulate and the results expected can be quickly updated for the design of optimal experiments. The student will work in close collaboration with the Englitz lab, so that there is a direct link between modelling, data analysis and experiment. As a PhD candidate you will use data on oddball paradigms [4,5], which provide the ability to directly observe predictions and distinguish them from prediction errors. The data are a combined approach of widefield imaging of the entire auditory cortex with local and layer-specific imaging using 2-photon recordings in the same animals. To directly test the top-down hypothesis, neurons in subareas of the prefrontal cortex will be transfected with an inhibitory opsin (eNpHR3.0) to modulate their top-down influence. You will develop a model of the hierarchical interaction between the auditory cortex and the prefrontal cortex, in which error signals are either coded as top-down (theory 1) or local (theory 2). You will use this model to formulate testable predictions, distinguishing theory 1 from theory 2. These predictions will be tested by both analysing existing data from the Englitz lab and formulating new experimental paradigms that are suitable to distinguish between the local and top-down hypothesis. In fact, dynamical systems are computationally universal. Rather than hand-crafting computational theories of neural function based on dynamical systems, recent developments in scientific machine learning (ML) and AI suggest that we may be able to infer such dynamical-computational models directly from neurophysiological and behavioral observations. This is called dynamical systems reconstruction (DSR), the learning of generative surrogate models of the underlying dynamics, including its long-term temporal and geometrical properties, from time series data. In my talk I will cover recent ML/AI architectures, training algorithms, and validation procedures for DSR. I will discuss specifically how recent AI architectures for DSR can integrate neuroscience data from multiple modalities (like multiple single-unit recordings and behavioral choices), across diverse time scales, and across many different animals and task designs, into a joint DSR model. While electrophysiological recordings in behaving animals have provided considerable information about what the firing patterns of single neurons encode in isolation, it remains largely a mystery how populations of neurons interact to perform brain functions. How do emergent collective behaviors, such as neuronal oscillations, waves, or avalanches, support function? And what is the nature of the brain’s internal state and how that affects function? With the aim of further strengthening the connection between neuroscience and statistical physics, this satellite workshop is intended to gather neuroscientists, physicists, and mathematicians who work on collective dynamics, cognition and behavior, and provide an interdisciplinary stage to discuss recent theoretical/computational and experimental advances on the role of neural ensembles for brain function.
