The successful candidate’s research will involve synergistic collaborations with a multidisciplinary team to investigate brain processes using methodologies such as computational modelling, machine learning and AI. Research to be conducted could, e.g., comprise modelling brain circuits like the olfactory bulb or the cerebellum and simulating and analysing their function. Additional impact could arise in machine learning, AI, data science, neurorobotics and neuromorphic computing. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a programme of research in collaboration with colleagues at UH and partner organisations in the UK and abroad. Leading the preparation and publication of research manuscripts is a key aspect of the role. Contributions to the preparation of research proposals and applications for funding to external bodies, such as the European Commission and the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) are expected. The postholder will create opportunities to maximise research activities, capturing relevant evidence to support impact and engaging with external partners and stakeholders. Skill and experience required * Strong theoretical, computational and programming background in computational modelling and/or machine learning and/or data science and/or AI. * Background and expertise in computational neuroscience (e.g. spiking neural networks, brain function and anatomy, analysis of brain data). * Demonstrated experience to conduct independent research in computational neuroscience or a related field, e.g., through published research papers or monographs. * Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English * The applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills. Unlike standard paradigms with unconstrained connectivity, here both networks have the same connectivity but they have different biophysical parameters, reflecting uncertainty in neuronal and synaptic properties. We find that the connectome is often insufficient to constrain the dynamics of networks that perform a specific task, illustrating the difficulty of inferring function from connectivity alone. However, recordings from a small subset of neurons can remove this degeneracy, producing dynamics in the student that agree with the teacher. Our theory can prioritize which neurons to record from to most efficiently unmeasured network activity. The analysis shows that the solution spaces of connectome-constrained and unconstrained models are qualitatively different, and provides a framework to determine when such models yield consistent dynamics. *About VVTNS : Created as the World Wide Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), its aim is to be a platform to exchange ideas among theoreticians. Doctoral studies in the computational neuroscience of decision-making Department of Neuroscience, University of Montreal Applications are invited for doctoral studies in computational neuroscience, in the laboratory of Paul Cisek at the University of Montreal. Our research investigates the neural mechanisms of embodied decision-making and action planning in humans and non-human primates using computational models of the nervous system integrated with behavioral experiments, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and multi-electrode recording in multiple regions of the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia. New projects will use virtual reality to study naturalistic behavior in humans and non-human primates and develop theoretical models of how distributed cortical and subcortical circuits govern continuous interaction with a dynamic environment. We are currently seeking a PhD student whose primary project will involve mathematical models that capture and explain data from previous and current experiments and make testable predictions for future work. Students with a strong background in mathematics, engineering, computer science, or physics, coupled with a keen interest in theoretical neuroscience are encouraged to apply. Prior experience in neurophysiology, behavioral neuroscience and/or computational modeling of neural systems is desirable. The Perceptual Inference Group is building an interdisciplinary team of cognitive and computational neuroscientists to work at the interface between machine learning and ultra-high-resolution fMRI. We are currently looking for postdocs and PhD students. Our group investigates how cortical and subcortical populations of the brain work together to infer the content of noisy sensory signals at multiple timescales. We work primarily in the auditory modality and the human brain, but collaborate closely with animal electrophysiologists. The positions are funded by the ERC and there will plenty of funding for conferences, traveling between Leipzig and San Sebastian, and visiting our large network of international collaborators. The positions will be primarily based in one of the two cities and traveling will be optional. Ideal candidates will have a background in either cognitive neuroscience (including experimental psychology) or a quantitative discipline (physics, computer science, statistics, or related) and a keen interest in building models of brain function. Hello! We would like to remind you that the deadline for application to School of Ideas in Neuroscience 2024* is Friday, March 29th!* How the knowledge in neuroscience is accumulated? How can we make sense of the terabytes of empirical data we collect every day? In everyday work, we often forget that every scientific endeavour is embedded in a broader theoretical framework. At the same time, most courses and workshops in neuroscience teach us experimental techniques, giving us more tools to gather more data. But, we are not taught how to develop ideas and integrate our research with the existing knowledge. *We believe that theoretical thinking and idea development are skills that can be trained just as new methodologies and data analysis tools*. At our school, we aim to teach participants how to think theoretically to collect data that makes sense and to make sense of collected data! Come to Warsaw to discuss the most exciting theories and ideas with neuroscientists & philosophers! We provide beautiful surroundings, great atmosphere and a lot of time to talk and think together. Several competing hypotheses for the neuronal mechanisms underlying persistent activity have been proposed. We have employed data-driven models in conjunction with optogenetic disruptions of neural circuits within memory-guided motor tasks. Our findings revealed a mechanism governed by dynamic attractors, pivotal in sustaining neuronal activity. This mechanism, shaped by time-varying inputs reflecting temporal predictions, is instrumental in regulating the impact of sensory information on the premotor cortex, thereby preserving memory traces from distracting stimuli. We then asked how persistent activity driven by attractor dynamics emerges during motor learning. It has been proposed that activity-dependent synaptic plasticity underpins motor learning, as it can reconfigure network architectures to produce the appropriate neural dynamics for specific behaviors. To verify this hypothesis, we investigated how the mouse premotor cortex acquires specific neural dynamics that govern the planning of movement at different stages of motor learning. We developed network models that replicated the effects of acute manipulations of synaptic plasticity. The models, which display attractor dynamics, also explain flexible behavior after learning has ended. By leveraging the model's predictions, we can formulate testable hypotheses regarding the distinct mechanisms governing movement planning at various stages of the learning process. *About VVTNS : Created as the World Wide Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), its aim is to be a platform to exchange ideas among theoreticians. Postdoc in Data Science for a National Neurophysiologic Database – Technical University of Denmark Do you want to play a key role in using personal health data for research in diagnosing, monitoring and treating neurophysiological disorders? We are looking for a data scientist with a keen interest in neuroscience/neuroinformatics to help us build the National Neurophysiologic Database in Denmark. The National Neurophysiologic Database is a 5-year project funded by the Novo Nordic Foundation with partners from Copenhagen University hospital, Computerome and the Technical University of Denmark. The purpose of the database is to collect neurophysiological data from all hospitals in Denmark and make it available for research. When completed, the database will contain data from more than 100.000 measurements, that can be linked to detailed patient records, making it the largest database of its kind worldwide and an unmatched resource for neurophysiological research. Responsibilities and qualifications Your role will be to structure the database in collaboration with researchers in neurophysiology, medicine and data science. You will build tools for data harmonization and quality control. You will also play a key role in analysing data for neurophysiological research. Finally, you will also participate in developing multiple privacy preserving levels of access to the database. Our ideal candidate holds a PhD in neuroinformatics, data science or a related field, and has a keen interest in developing a research career in neuroinformatics with the National Neurophysiologic Database at its center. How does the brain encode sensory information and form associative memories? Andrew Lin’s lab at the University of Sheffield is seeking a Research Associate to study these questions in the fruit fly Drosophila. We study memory using a range of methods, such as in vivo two-photon calcium imaging, electrophysiology, fly genetics, behavioural experiments, computational modelling and building custom equipment. You will design, develop and perform experiments and data analysis (tailoring the project to your own interests and expertise), write papers, and present your work at conferences and seminars. We seek self-motivated, innovative and creative candidates with a PhD in a relevant field (or equivalent experience), expertise in at least some of the above techniques, excellent communication skills, and an ability to work independently and in a team. We encourage applications from diverse academic backgrounds, such as biology, neuroscience, experimental psychology, computer science, physics and engineering. Dear Colleagues, We are happy to announce the third edition of our Optics and Microscopy Workshop! This time we will meeting one of the most beautiful places in Poland – Biebrza marshes! The workshop will be a *thorough, hands – on introduction to optics and microscopy*. With our instructor, Fred Marbach from Crick Institute, we will start from absolute basics – *photons, ray diagrams and lenses*; then move to building simple optical system, just to *end up building DIY bright-field and fluorescent microscopes.* We will image neurons (hopefully!), and understand every last bit of how that image came to be (this is a certainty!). During the workshop you will build an intuition for optics, allowing you to reason about optical systems found in the lab (and in publications): you will understand the equipment you are using on a much deeper level. Workshop will take place *May 10-12th in Goniądz*, in Dwór Bartla, overlooking the beautiful Biebrza river, which at this time of the year provides great opportunities for birdwatching. The US Department of Defense's Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) funds grants for basic research on topics that change annually. These grants, which provide up to $1.5M/year for up to 5 years, are awarded to multidisciplinary teams from US institutions of higher education. Topic 3, Energy and Information Processing in Biological Organisms, aims to support investigations of relationships between energy consumption and information processing in biological organisms with a goal of identifying strategies that could have implications for human and computer performance in energy-constrained environments. The new department of Computing Sciences, created two years ago and in a phase of rapid expansion, is an interdisciplinary department with leading international researchers in various fields including theoretical computer science, machine learning theory, statistical physics modeling, natural language processing, computational neuroscience, as well as biomedical applications. In terms of teaching, the department has recently opened a bachelor in AI, a master in AI, and is strongly involved in the PhD program in Statistics and Computer Science. NeuroML announcements: upcoming HARMONY hackathon in London and Google Summer of Code projects

We would like to announce 2 upcoming initiatives related to the NeuroML project: a hackathon in London at UCL where you can learn about the model description language and get help converting your model to this standardised format, and 3 Google Summer of Code projects where students or postdocs can be paid for contributing to the NeuroML model development infrastructure. ---- The COMBINE organisation's HARMONY meeting is being held at University College London from April 8-11 this year. Registration for HARMONY is free. https://co.mbine.org/author/harmony-2024/ We (NeuroML editors and developers) will be running hands-on NeuroML hackathons at HARMONY, with the general theme being to help researchers learn more about NeuroML and to build new or convert existing models in NeuroML. Systems Vision Science Virtual Summer School & Symposium: June 19th – July 12th, 2024 -------------------------------- Applications are invited for a <https://summerschool.lizhaoping.org/virtual-systems-vision-science-summer-s…> virtual edition of <https://summerschool.lizhaoping.org/> the Systems Vision Science Summer School and Symposium that took place in Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tuebingen, Germany in August 2023. This year, the virtual edition enables students to attend from afar by formal lectures via Zoom and informal and social communications via a Slack channel. Systems Vision Science combines computational, behavioral, and neuroscience methods to discover functions and algorithms for vision in various brain regions and their implementations in neural circuits. This summer school is designed for everyone interested in gaining a systems level understanding of biological vision. We plan a coherent, graduate-level, syllabus on the integration of experimental data with theory and models. The syllabus content will be very similar to the edition in 2023, the learning format, the delivery, and social interactions will be adjusted to suit the virtual format. Experience or knowledge in (A) computational methods, (B) visual psychophysics, and (C) vision neuroscience, is not required. However, experience in at least one of (A), (B), and (C), and a readiness to learn, is expected. The Summer School will be followed by a Systems Vision Science Virtual Symposium on July 12th. All admitted summer school students will be invited to attend this symposium and are encouraged to submit for a presentation at the symposium. I am opening three fully funded postdoctoral positions in computational neuroscience at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in Hamburg, Germany. We investigate how networks of neurons in the cerebral cortex encode, process and transmit information to generate behaviors such as sensation and decision-making. To address these issues, we develop and use information-theoretic and machine learning methods to study population coding, as well as neural network models to individuate mechanisms for neural information processing and generation of functions. Our laboratory enjoys extensive long-term international collaborations with experimental laboratories, including with Chris Harvey at Harvard Medical School, Wei- Lee at Boston Children’s Hospital, Tommaso Fellin and Alessandro Gozzi at IIT, Mriganka Sur at MIT, as well as collaborations with experimental laboratories in Hamburg (Andreas Engel, Tobias Donner, Ileana Hanganu-Opatz). The laboratory also offers a thriving, ambitious and well-funded research environment (with funds from the NIH Brain Initiative, the Simons Foundation, the European Union, the ERC). The lab provides ample opportunities for advanced training and for personal scientific growth. We seek candidates holding a PhD in a numerate or neuroscientific discipline, with a solid computational background and a keen interest in neuroscience. They must be highly motivated and creative individuals who want to work in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary research environment and be happy to interact with both experimental and theoretical neuroscientists. NeuroDataReHack 2024 July 8-12, 2024 Janelia Research Campus, Ashburn, Virginia, USA The goal of NeuroDataReHack is to train participants to generate new insights from existing neurophysiology data through secondary analysis. The DANDI Archive <http://dandiarchive.org/> now has 200+ neurophysiology datasets in the Neurodata Without Borders <http://nwb.org/> format spanning many species, brain areas, task types, and imaging modalities. These include large-scale datasets from the Allen Institute, the MICrONS project, and the International Brain Laboratory, as well as diverse contributions from neuroscience labs around the world. Recently, the techniques for studying behaviour, along with those for monitoring and manipulating neural activity, have progressed rapidly. Therefore, we are organizing a summer course to provide promising young scientists with a comprehensive introduction to state-of-the-art techniques in quantitative behavioural methods. This course’s content is complementary to other summer courses that focus on measuring and manipulation neurophysiological processes. Our focus is on methodologies to acquire rich data representations of behavior, dissect them statistically, model their dynamics, and integrate behavioral measurements with other kinds of neurobiological data. To this end, students will 1) fabricate devices for recording the behavior of experimental organisms (including flies, fish, and humans), 2) learn, under the guidance of the scientists developing these methods, the modern tools to analyze behavioral data from these organisms, and 3) in a week-long independent project develop and conduct a behavioral study of their own design, with the support and guidance of the course instructors and teaching assistants. The course is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from a variety of disciplines, including neuroscience, biology, ethology, computer science, and psychology. Students are expected to have a keen interest and basic background in neurobiology and behavior, as well as some programming experience. A maximum of 20 students will be accepted. The CTCN is a joint initiative between the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Arts and Sciences, and provides a hub for neuroscientists to collaborate with mathematicians, physicists and engineers to find creative solutions to some of the most difficult problems currently facing neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Each CTCN Postdoctoral Fellow is based in at least two labs, but also has the opportunity to seek out new collaborations which help build new connections within the WashU community. Hello! We are super happy to announce *School** of Ideas in Neuroscience 2024!* How the knowledge in neuroscience is accumulated? How can we make sense of the terabytes of empirical data we collect every day? In everyday work, we often forget that every scientific endeavour is embedded in a broader theoretical framework. At the same time, most courses and workshops in neuroscience teach us experimental techniques, giving us more tools to gather more data. But, we are not taught how to develop ideas and integrate our research with the existing knowledge. *We believe that theoretical thinking and idea development are skills that can be trained just as new methodologies and data analysis tools*. At our school, we aim to teach participants how to think theoretically to collect data that makes sense and to make sense of collected data! Postdoctoral Position in MRI data analysis of cerebellar development

We are looking to recruit a new postdoctoral associate for a large collaborative project on the anatomical development of the human cerebellum. The overall goal of the project is to develop a high-resolution normative model of human cerebellar development across the entire life span (see raynorcerebellumcharts.github.io<https://raynorcerebellumcharts.github.io/>). The successful candidate will join the Diedrichsen Lab<http://www.diedrichsenlab.org/> (Western University, Canada) and will work with a team of colleagues at Erasmus Medical Center, the Donders Institute (Netherlands), McGill, Dalhousie, Sick Kids, and UBC (Canada). A PhD degree in Neuroscience, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Psychology, Medicine or related fields is required. Expertise in machine learning, analysis of medical imaging data, and/or normative modeling is highly desired. The project is funded for a 3 year duration, with the initial contract for 2 years. *Opportunity for a research stay at the Cluster of Excellence Centre for Advanced Study of Collective Behavior* Call for Ph.D. students and postdocs interested in working on a short-term project, "Animal vocal source localization using machine learning," at Excellence Centre for Advanced Study of Collective Behavior at the University of Konstanz and the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior We are seeking talented and motivated Ph.D. students and postdocs to work on a machine learning solution that allows us to localize the position of animals vocalizing in the field, using acoustic information. We have openings for one Ph.D. student and one postdoc. The successful Ph.D. student and the postdoc will receive, respectively, a 6- month (1300 euros/month) and 9-month (2100 euros/month) fellowship to work in the state-of-the-art facility at the University of Konstanz and the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior together with leading scientists in the field. We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications: 1. Experience with advanced signal processing 2. Experience designing deep neural networks 3. Good programming skills in Python 4. SAVE THE DATE EITN eBrains Fall School in Computational Neuroscience Save the date: Marseille, October 16th to 25th, 2024 The EITN eBrains Fall School in Computational Neuroscience is scheduled to be held in Marseille, France, from October 16th to 25th, 2024. This 10-day intensive program offers a comprehensive exploration of theoretical and computational neuroscience methods, to build models from single neurons to whole-brain scales. The course covers cellular models, spiking neural networks, mean-field models, and whole-brain models, with corresponding lectures and tutorials provided for each topic, to be applied during project works. Ph.D. students, young postdocs, or master's students interested in learning about computational neuroscience techniques and utilizing various simulation environments for model construction will collaborate in thematic group projects under the mentorship of experienced tutors.
