More concretely, ALife defines ways to investigate processes that contribute to the formation and proliferation of living organisms. In this session we focus on three common approaches to tackle this investigation, proposing ways to integrate, extend and possibly improve them. More specifically we refer to: 1) the formalisation of the necessary properties for the definition of life, 2) the implementation of artificial agents, and 3) the study of the relation between life and cognition. For this special session we propose to start from these well-established Alife methodologies, and extend them through: a unified formal language for the description and modelling of living, as well as artificial and cognitive systems, e.g. control theory, Bayesian inference, dynamical systems theory, etc., the exploration of biological creatures enhanced by artificial systems (or artificial systems augmented with organic parts) in order to investigate the boundaries between living and nonliving organisms, and the evaluation of coupled biological-artificial systems that could shed light on the importance of interactions among systems for the study of living and cognitive organisms. This special sessions aims to invite contributions from the fields of psychology, computational neuroscience, HCI, theoretical biology, artificial intelligence, robotics and cognitive science to discuss current research on the formalisation, combination and interaction of artificial/living/cognitive systems from theoretical, modelling and implementational perspectives. Application is now open for a research scientist or postdoctoral fellow in Montpellier (France) A new company is seeking a research scientist or postdoctoral fellow to work on (1) EEG data collection and analysis and (2) noninvasive brain stimulation in human subjects. CorStim SAS, a startup created in 2019 and located in Montpellier is developing a new therapeutic approach for the treatment of poststroke chronic aphasia. The candidate must have a PhD in neuroscience, neuropsychology, biomedical engineering, or in a relevant field, with experience in data collection, analysis and brain stimulation in human subjects. The position is for 1 year, renewable, with a possibility of a permanent position. The salary will be based on experience. The position is open until filled. The candidate will work in close collaboration with members from the academic, medical and private sectors. Fluent technical English is a must and speaking French is a plus. Expertise in Matlab preferred. Applications are open for the Methods in Computational Neuroscience course at the Marine Biology Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA. A postdoctoral position is available at Jagiellonian University in Krakow for up to 36 months starting preferably on May 1st. The postdoc will work in one of two projects. The goal of the first is to develop point process models of neuronal spiking activity that could effectively describe adaptive processes including learning but also different types of modulation (e.g. brain-stem modulatory effects on visual information processing, etc.). The postdoc will develop abstract models, estimation methods, implement them in software, and use developed software and methods to analyze data from experimental partners after testing them on simulated data. The goal of the second project is building reinforcement learning models of behavior and development of estimation methods and tools. The focus is on rodent behavior in intelligent cages, such as IntelliCage or Eco-HAB, and taking into account individual and group learning aspects. The postdoc will develop abstract models, estimation methods, implement them in software, and use developed software and methods to analyze data from experimental partners after testing them on simulated data. The position is open within the group led by prof. Daniel Wójcik. TWO OPENINGS FOR POST-DOC POSITIONS Two post-doc calls have been opened (see details below) in the context the following project funded by the Department of Information Engineering, University of Padova: Title of the project Personalized whole brain models for neuroscience: inference and validation Abstract of the project: Contemporary neuroscience has embraced network science to study the complex and self- organized structure of the human brain, with the promise of addressing key societal issues such as neural degeneration and treatment of neurological and psychiatric diseases and damages. These objectives will be pursued in this highly interdisciplinary project following a data-driven model based approach: our final goal is to design novel algorithmic solutions for data-driven inference of whole-brain mesoscale dynamical models as well as to develop and validate (or invalidate) models based on both data driven as well as methodological studies. POST DOCTORAL POSITION # 2 TITLE: Analysis and validation of novel models and methods for effective connectivity in whole-brain network models Activity: The activities will be mainly related to the preprocessing and analysis of neuroimaging data as well as validation, via systematic statistical testing, of effective connectivity models on animal data as well as on stroke patients. In particular, the post-doc will be involved in the design of experiments and conduct human neuroimaging research on normal brain organization and changes in network architecture among patients with stroke, with an emphasis on effective and functional connectivity network mapping. The post-doc will compare the human results with those he/she will obtain working with whole- brain rs-fMRI signals from the animal model. Profile: The position is open to recent PhDs in applied mathematics/physics, computer science, engineering, statistics and related fields, with demonstrated ability to conduct high impact research. The successful applicant will have expertise in anatomical MRI, dMRI and/or rs-fMRI analysis, familiarity with control theory and system identification, time-series analysis, statistics and graph theoretic and network modeling. Expertise in vivo electrophysiology signals analysis is also desirable. Experience with neuroimaging analysis programs (ANTs, FSL, SPM, FreeSurfer or other relevant programs), and strong knowledge on programming (e.g. good command of scripting, Python and Matlab) is also expected. Generous stipends are provided for successful applicants to work on these projects for a number of months over the summer. The INCF<http://incf.org/> has been a GSoC mentoring organisation for the past number of years, and has helped link up students with mentors to advance various projects in the wider neuroinformatics and computational neuroscience areas. The Open Source Brain initiative<http://www.opensourcebrain.org> is encouraging students to apply to be part of this. The successful candidate for our our proposal<https://neurostars.org/t/gsoc-2020-project-idea-10-open-source-cross-simula…> will take published models of cells and networks from the cortex and convert them into open, standardised formats (e.g. NeuroML and PyNN) and share them on the OSB platform as a resource for the wider community. Making models available in these formats will allow them to be used & tested across multiple simulators, make the physiological properties of the models more accessible and facilitate reuse of model components. 2 PhD positions are available in the European Training Network project ENTRAIN-VISION <http://www.entrain-vision.eu/> in Prague, within the Marie Sklodowska-Curie ETN - Early Stage Researcher (PhD) program. Blindness is the most feared handicap leading to the greatest exclusion from society by reducing patient autonomy and mobility. Clinical trials have demonstrated the possibility to regain some useful vision with retinal prostheses in patients having lost photoreceptors. New approaches are entering into clinical trials such as photovoltaic implants, optogenetic therapy and even cortical prostheses for patients having lost eye to brain connection. In the ENTRAIN-VISION <http://www.entrain-vision.eu/> project, the Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) will work on these innovative technologies for restoring vision in blind patients. Their training in academic institutes or industry will be completed by several secondments, including at least one at an industry partner. In addition, several summer schools will address scientific subjects on vision restoration and transferable skills in technology transfer, clinical trials, start-up creation, and communication to the media. At the Computational Systems Neuroscience Group (CSNG <http://antolik.net/>) at Charles University in Prague, we will address the problem of how to encode visual stimulus, such that the stimulation of the targeted visual processing stage (retina, thalamus or cortex) leads to perception of the given stimulus by the implanted subject. With the launch of a new ‘NCCR Evolving Language’ (http://www.snf.ch/SiteCollectionDocuments/nfs/Faktenblatt_NCCR_evolvinglang…) which involves nearly 40 different research groups from a large variety of disciplines across Switzerland, we seek to fill a PhD position for a four-year project starting in May 2020, or at the selected candidate’s convenience. Our goal is to make progress in understanding language giftedness from cognitive, psychological and neural perspectives. To this end, we plan to carry out a set of studies involving both behavioral measures of cognitive and language-related abilities (e.g. auditory/perceptual abilities, phonemic perception and production, inductive learning, working memory etc) and brain imaging measures (fMRI and sMRI). The research group involves two PIs (Golestani, Geneva; and Berthele, Fribourg) and a postdoc. Data will be collected with Francophone (mono- and multilingual) subjects. Applicants should hold an MA degree in psychology, linguistics or a related field (e.g. psycholinguistics, applied linguistics, multillingualism), have a good command French and English and have strong quantitative research and statistics skills. Dear colleagues, The Basque Center of Applied Mathematics (BCAM) in Bilbao, Spain, is hosting a 1-week course on "Statistical Physics of Neural Networks" by Yonatan Aljadeff (The Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel), during May 11-15, 2020. The course will consist of five lessons of 2-hour each in the morning, with the possibility to deepen the material taught in the class by frontal meetings with Dr. Aljadeff during the rest of the day. This is an excellent occasion to learn about some of the most advanced material in computational neuroscience. The course is tailored to students with a strong background in mathematics and physics, who are either at advanced undergraduate or graduate levels, as well as to students who are strongly interested in pursuing doctoral research in computational neuroscience. The program of the course is as follows: 1. Random matrices (RMT). The circular and elliptic laws. A statistical physics derivation of Girko’s circular law–the spectral density of an asymmetric random matrix; and the elliptic law–the spectral density for a random matrix with correlations. 2. Transition to chaos in random networks. Dynamic mean-field analysis (DMFT) of a neural network model with random synaptic weights. 3. Random networks with structure. Extension of the RMT and DMFT to partially random and partially structured systems, e.g. systems with cell-type dependent interactions, distance-dependent interactions, heterogeneous and correlated degree distributions, etc. 4. The classical perceptron. Gardner's calculation by Replica method of the capacity of a classical perceptron. 5. Perceptrons in neuroscience. Modern applications of perceptron theory: relating predictions of the synaptic weight distribution to empirical distributions; robustness to noise via excitation-inhibition balance; learning. Applicants are invited for two Early Stage Researchers (ESR) of EU Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) to be hosted at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT). The positions are for a fixed-term of 3 years and the successful applicants are expected to register for PhD at the University of Ferrara, in Translational Neurosciences and Neurotechnologies. The two Early Stage Researchers (ESR) of COBRA H2020 project (G.A. N. 859588), an EU Innovative Training Network of MSCA involving 9 partners, which will train a group of 15 researchers that will be the next generation of researchers to accurately characterize and model the linguistic, cognitive and brain mechanisms deployed by human speakers in conversational interactions with human interlocutors as well as artificial dialog systems. ERS2 Objectives: When people are engaged in meaningful social interaction, they automatically and implicitly adjust their speech, vocal patterns and gestures to accommodate to others. Although these processes have extensively been explored at the behavioral level, very little is known about their neural underpinnings. Prior investigations have shown that suppression of alpha oscillations, overlaying sensorimotor regions, are a possible marker of action-perception coupling during non-speech (Tognoli & Kelso, 2015) and speech based (Mukherjee et al., 2019) interactive tasks. The project, by running dual-EEG recordings, will investigate if behavioral speech alignment translates into identifiable brain oscillatory markers. Key objectives are (i) to develop and validate metrics to quantify phonetic accommodation during natural speech interactions and (ii) to identify electrophysiological markers of between-speaker convergence. Expected results: - A computational pipeline, based on deep-learning methods, to extract phonetic accommodation patterns of speakers engaged in a meaningful social interaction; - A significant contribution to the field of hyper-scanning by exploring the neurophysiological correlates of phonetic convergence during conversations. This project is based on the hypothesis that when people engage in meaningful social interactions, they automatically and implicitly align at multiple levels (Pickering, Garrod, 2013), including the phonetic (Mukherjee et al., 2019) and the facial expression ones. ESR10 will tackle the fundamental scientific question of speech alignment in L2 and whether it drives long-lasting improvements in L2 skills. Key objectives are (i) to investigate the dynamics of alignment in L2 (English) and (ii) to quantify improvements when participants are engaged in a conversation with native speakers. Expected results: - Validation of a set of game-like tools to quantify L2 speech and facial movements alignment; - Exhaustive investigation of alignment in L2, its relation with L2 proficiency before training and long term retention of L2 improvements. With the launch of a new ‘NCCR Evolving Language’ (http://www.snf.ch/SiteCollectionDocuments/nfs/Faktenblatt_NCCR_evolvinglang…) which involves nearly 40 different research groups from a large variety of disciplines across Switzerland, we seek to fill a Postdoc position for a four-year project starting in May 2020, or at the selected candidate’s earliest convenience. Our goal is to make progress in understanding the importance of prosody in language processing. To this end, we plan to carry out a set of studies involving both computational modeling of fMRI data and real-time fMRI neurofeedback to understand the mechanisms whereby prosody and rhythm support linguistic processing per se. The computational modeling work will be an extension of our recent work on the neural encoding of acoustic information in speech sounds (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31285622) The research will be done in the group of Narly Golestani (www.brainandlanguagelab.org<http://www.brainandlanguagelab.org>) in Geneva, in collaboration with researchers in Switzerland and abroad (Elia Formisano in Maastricht, and Frank Scharnowski in Vienna). We have an exciting opportunity for a PhD-student or postdoc to work on the neuronal mechanisms for object perception and perceptual organization Project description The perception of objects and their segregation from cluttered backgrounds requires interactions between lower and higher areas of the visual cortex. In this project we will simultaneously record from low-level and higher-level cortical areas of the temporal stream in monkeys trained on tasks that rely on object vision. We compare the activity of neurons in the different brain areas to the tuning of units in deep neural networks, to elucidate the contributions of feedforward and feedback connections between brain areas. We expect from you: You are highly motivated, self-driven with a degree in neuroscience, (neuro)psychology, biomedical sciences, natural sciences, material science, mathematics, physics, etc. A high level of written and spoken English and good programming skills are required. 13ᵗʰ Advanced Scientific Programming in Python ============================================== a Summer School by the ASPP faculty and the Ghent University https://aspp.school Scientists spend more and more time writing, maintaining, and debugging software. While techniques for doing this efficiently have evolved, only few scientists have been trained to use them. As a result, instead of doing their research, they spend far too much time writing deficient code and reinventing the wheel. In this course we will present a selection of advanced programming techniques and best practices which are standard in the industry, but especially tailored to the needs of a programming scientist. Lectures are devised to be interactive and to give the students enough time to acquire direct hands-on experience with the materials. Students will work in pairs throughout the school and will team up to practice the newly learned skills in a real programming project — an entertaining computer game. We use the Python programming language for the entire course. Python works as a simple programming language for beginners, but more importantly, it also works great in scientific simulations and data analysis. We show how clean language design, ease of extensibility, and the great wealth of open source libraries for scientific computing and data visualization are driving Python to become a standard tool for the programming scientist. This school is targeted at Master or PhD students and Post-docs from all areas of science. Competence in Python or in another language such as Java, C/C++, MATLAB, or R is absolutely required. Basic knowledge of Python and of a version control system such as git, subversion, mercurial, or bazaar is assumed. Participants without any prior experience with Python and/or git should work through the proposed introductory material before the course. We use mathematical and computational approaches to study how neural networks self-organize into functional units from a combination of mechanisms including synaptic, homeostatic and intrinsic plasticity. We investigate different levels from individual synaptic inputs on dendrites to large-scale networks of higher order cortex. We are especially interested in these aspects during cortical development before and shortly after birth when the brain is highly plastic, but general aspects of learning and memory, especially under naturalistic stimuli and behaviors are also of great interest. *Weakly nonlinear interactions in an electrosensory cocktail party problem* Within the DFG priority program "Evolutionary Optimisation of Neuronal Processing", we are looking for a PhD candidate to work on the detection of weak signals in the presence of much stronger distractors, a joint project with the experimental lab of Jan Benda (University Tubingen, Germany). The 'cocktail party problem' is here regarded as a general theoretical problem and will be explored by the successful candidate by means of analytical calculations and numerical simulations of stochastic models of spiking neurons. Beyond pursuing purely theoretical approaches, the main goal of this project is to understand weakly nonlinear interactions specifically in the electrosensory system of weakly electric fish, an experimental model system of the Benda lab. In order to get an idea about similar approaches pursued in the past, have a look at some of the joint publications of the Benda lab and the Lindner group: Fisch et al. J. PNAS 114 E1977 (2017) The successful candidate should have a degree in physics, mathematics or computational neuroscience (a background in neurobiology is desirable but not obligatory), programming skills (C++, Python, LaTeX, Linux), an excellent command of the English language, good communication skills, team spirit, and, last but not least, great enthusiasm for interdisciplinary projects. We have exciting opportunities for 3 PhD-student or postdocs to work on Architectures and learning methods for hierarchical cognitive processing Project description Our recent theoretical insights have allowed a preliminary understanding of how animals learn to represent and memorize the key features of sensory stimuli for the guidance of action based on reinforcement learning (Rombouts et al. PloS Comp Biol 2015; Holtmaat & Roelfsema, Nature Reviews Neuroscience, 2018). The present project focuses on the hierarchical learning of cognitive subroutines, which can be incorporated into larger routines, by trial and error. We aim to develop a biologically plausible learning rules that endow neural networks with the possibility to learn hierarchical task structures and learn and execute cognitive tasks. Topics of interest include - the role of learnable/flexible working memory models in learning and executing hierarchically structures routines. The project is a collaboration between in the Vision & Cognition group (Dr. Pieter Roelfsema) at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience and the Machine Learning Lab at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica in Amsterdam (Dr. Sander Bohte). Our research is focused on biologically realistic models of spatio-temporal processing in recurrent cortical networks and their relation to reinforcement learning, Bayesian computing, learning to learn, and neuromorphic implementations. He or she should have a Ph.D. in computer science or related fields. Exceptionally, we can also consider Ph.D. candidates in case of extremely good qualifications. The candidate is expected to contribute to research in auto-tuning mechanisms on different hardware platforms to implement biologically inspired neural networks. Thus, a very good experience in parallel computing is absolutely required. Both positions are funded for up to 38 months each, on a newly funded EC-Horizon 2020 project called "Ionic Neuromodulation For Epilepsy Treatment (IN-FET)". This project combines neurobiology, nanotechnologies, electrochemistry, and electronics together towards a novel breakthrough technology in brain modulation. The event is organised by the European Institute for Theoretical Neuroscience (EITN) and will take place at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) on the Île Saint-Louis in central Paris. *Conference abstract* In this workshop we address mechanisms by which brains encode information. We will discuss how neurons - leaky, stochastic channels - interact nonlinearly to entrain synchrony and resonance phenomena thereby reducing dimensionality in dynamics of the cell assemblies coding particular representations. From unconscious to conscious brain states, spontaneous neural signals increase in dimensionality. Since neural codes likely lie on low dimensional manifolds, we explore collapses in dimensionality within encoding networks as mechanisms supporting neural information specifically in conscious states. The investigation of biomimetic systems can serve two complementary goals. First, a suitably designed and configured biomimetic artefact can be used to test theories about the natural system of interest. Second, biomimetic technologies can provide useful, elegant and efficient solutions to unsolved challenges in science and engineering. *Biohybrid* systems are formed by combining at least one biological component—an existing living system—and at least one artificial, newly-engineered component. By passing information in one or both directions, such a system forms a new hybrid bio-artificial entity. The theme of the conference also encompasses biomimetic methods for manufacture, repair, and recycling inspired by natural processes such as reproduction, digestion, morphogenesis, and metamorphosis. The following are some examples of “Living Machines” as featured at past conferences: * Biomimetic robots and their component technologies (sensors, actuators, processors) that can intelligently interact with their environments. * Biomimetic computers—neuromimetic emulations of the physiological basis for intelligent behavior. * Active biomimetic materials and structures that self-organize and self-repair or show other bio-inspired functions. * Nature-inspired designs and manufacturing processes. * Biohybrid brain-machine interfaces and neural implants. * Artificial organs and body-parts including sensory organ-chip hybrids and intelligent prostheses. * Organism-level biohybrids such as robot-animal or robot-human systems. *ACTIVITIES* The main conference will take the form of a *three-day single-track oral* and *poster presentation program*, *28th July to 31st July 2020*, and will be hosted at the Botanical Garden of Freiburg by the University of Freiburg, Germany, and the Cluster of Excellence “Living, Adaptive and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems (livMatS)” (www.livmats.uni-freiburg.de<http://www.livmats.uni-freiburg.de/>). Project details Deep Brain Stimulation(DBS) is an effective treatment method for a range of neurological andpsychiatric conditions. It involves placing electrodes deep in a patient’sbrain, usually in precisely targeted subcortical nuclei. DBS surgery affords aunique opportunity to study the neural activity of these nuclei via recordingof local electrical signals known as local field potentials (LFP). Our grouppioneered simultaneous recording of subcortical LFP with non-invasive wholebrain imaging using magnetoencephalography (MEG). This makes it possible to mapout cortico-subcortical oscillatory coherent networks which have characteristicfrequencies and cortical topographies for each subcortical target. Over theyears we collected data from several different subcortical nuclei andcharacterised their oscillatory networks. The aim of the proposed project is toestablish a modelling framework which could accommodate these findings and makequantitative predictions for future experiments. This will require extendingexisting models of cortical dynamics and integrating information fromadditional imaging modalities such as functional MRI and Diffusion TensorModelling (DTI). The euSNN training networkoffers exciting and unique opportunities for the student to pursue this projectincluding interactions with top experts in neuroimaging brain modelling andexposure to several different modelling frameworks and approaches that thestudent will have to master and integrate to achieve the project’s goals. Theremight also be opportunities towards the end of the project to test some of thepredictions experimentally. In addition, the student will have a chance to workon secondments with commercial companies on topics relevant to the project. Funding notes The starting date can beany date between being offered the position and 1st October 2020 andthe contract is for 36 months. The Functional Neuroimaging Laboratory (https://www.iit.it/research/lines/functional-neuroimaging) at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Rovereto (Italy) is looking for a Postdoctoral scientist interested in studying the neural basis of functional connectivity disruption in autism. Our research is aimed at identifying the general neural and cellular principles governing the assembly of brain connectivity, and its breakdown in developmental disorders such as autism. We address these questions by mapping functional connectivity alterations in people with autism and model organisms harboring autism-associated genetic etiologies. For reference to recent work relevant to this position, please see Gutierrez-Barragan et al., Current Biology (2019) and Bertero et al., Brain (2018). The successful candidate must have a PhD in cognitive neuroscience, physics, neuroinformatics or equivalent, a proven record in the analysis of functional images of the mammalian brain, plus a sound knowledge of signal processing and statistical methods applied to brain imaging. Grandmother cells a failed concept? Or is Barlow right that grandmother cells exist and “can now be recorded from and studied reliably?"

Ann-Sophie Barwich recently published an article in Frontiers in Neuroscience titled “The Value of Failure in Science: The Story of Grandmother Cells in Neuroscience” (https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnins.2019.01121/full) where she argues for the need for failure analysis in science and, in the context of neuroscience, analyzed the grandmother cell concept as a failed one. Although I was one of the reviewers who endorsed the article for publication (publication of alternative viewpoints is essential in science), I felt that Barwich’s arguments against grandmother cells were deeply flawed. I point out these flaws in a Commentary in Frontiers in Neuroscience: “Commentary: The Value of Failure in Science: The Story of Grandmother Cells in Neuroscience:” https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnins.2020.00059/full I think Reddy and Thorpe’s 2014 article clears the confusion about concept cells. With Reddy and Thorpe’s characterization of concept cells, one would find no difference between concept cells and grandmother cells. And that’s essentially what I have done in the Commentary – show that concept cells and grandmother cells have identical properties. I also point out in the Commentary that it’s a false claim by Barwich (and in other prior articles that Barwich references) that concept cells can be part of a sparse population coding scheme. Given that concept cells have “meaning” on a stand-alone basis, they can’t be part of any population coding scheme. And it’s also a false claim in Barwich that grandmother cells do not use associative learning, because grandmother cells have always been characterized as “multimodal” going all the way back to Gross (2002). In addition, the neurophysiological evidence on multisensory neurons clearly point to a single-cell based abstract cognitive system in the brain, as claimed by Roy (2017). *** HIRING: machine learning research scientist The Machine Learning Team at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in Bethesda, MD, has an open position for a machine learning research scientist. The NIMH is the lead federal agency for research on mental disorders and neuroscience, and part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). *** About the NIMH Machine Learning Team Our mission is to help NIMH scientists use machine learning methods to address a diverse set of research problems in clinical and cognitive psychology and neuroscience. These range from identifying biomarkers for aiding diagnoses to creating and testing models of mental processes in healthy subjects. We work with many different data types, including very large brain imaging datasets from various imaging modalities, behavioral data, and picture and text corpora. We have excellent computational resources, both of our own (tens of GPUs for deep learning) and shared within the NIH (a cluster with hundreds of thousands of CPUs, and hundreds of GPUs). As a machine learning research group, we develop new methods and publish in the main machine learning conferences (e.g. NeurIPS and ICLR), as well as in psychology and neuroscience journals. Many of our problems require devising research approaches that combine imaging and non-imaging data, and leveraging structured knowledge resources (databases, scientific literature, etc) to generate explanations and hypotheses. Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD studentship in Computational Neuroscience with Dr. Angus Chadwick at the Institute for Adaptive and Neural Computation in the School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh, commencing September 2020 or later. Exceptional applicants interested in a September 2021 start may also apply. Students should hold, or be close to completion of, an undergraduate or masters degree in physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, or similar, and be interested in applying their analytical skills to tackle problems in neuroscience. Highly motivated students with other backgrounds may also be considered. The newly-formed Chadwick group focuses on the dynamics of neural populations underlying visual perception and spatial navigation. We use a combination of approaches, including 1) top-down modelling of neural circuit function guided by machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions 2) bottom-up analysis and simulation of neuronal network dynamics, and 3) statistical modelling of large-scale neural recordings. Our long-term goal is to develop a unified theory of the neural circuit computations supporting visual and spatial processing which spans these levels of analysis. We collaborate closely with a number of experimental neuroscience laboratories both in Edinburgh and further afield. Edinburgh is a vibrant and international city with a large student population, and has been voted as “best place to live in Britain”. The School of Informatics maintains an internationally-leading research environment in Computational Neuroscience, Machine Learning and Robotics, with close links to the Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences and the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences. The International Brain Laboratory (https://www.internationalbrainlab.com/) is seeking 3 data scientists, who will play key roles in a large-scale international collaboration in brain research. The International Brain Lab combines the efforts of approximately 50 scientists in 20 laboratories toward understanding the brain-wide basis of a complex behavior. The project will involve recording the activity of millions of neurons in the working brain and building mathematical models of the resulting data. The data sets this project will produce are vast and complex, including physiological recordings, behavioural measurements, and video, all of which must be standardized into common formats, integrated into a single database, and subjected to quality control. We are proud to announce the 2020 Big Brain Imaging Workshop hosted jointly by the NSF NeuroNex Nemonic Hub as well as the Boston University Neurophotonics Center! This two-day workshop will take place on Wednesday, April 15th and continue on Thursday, April 16th, 2020 at the Boston University Photonics Center, 8 Saint Mary's Street, Room 906, Boston, MA 02215. The 2020 Big Brain Imaging Workshop is an opportunity to join in the discussion on optical approaches for cellular resolution imaging of neuronal populations that have been highly instrumental for uncovering the principles of neural circuit function. To date, the microscope technology development for imaging the nervous system has largely been focused on applications on a subset of model species with smaller, optically accessible brains (ex. c. elegans, zebrafish, mice). The ability to translate these technologies to species with brains that are both physically larger and less optically accessible remains a challenge. The topic of the workshop is focused on advancing cellular resolution brain imaging techniques in "larger" brains of mammalian species (ex. rats, cats, ferrets, marmosets, macaques). The goal is to bring neuroscientists and optical engineers together to discuss challenges and come up with potential solutions that will pave the way for the next generation of microscopes that can be applied to a greater number of model organisms. Of interest are models of computation that consist of elementary units of processing using brain circuits and memory elements. The Computational Neuroscience and Psychiatry Lab (www.pinotsislab.com) at University ofLondon—City is looking for a Post Doc with a strong background in video gamesand/or numerical analysis of ODEs/PDEs and/or computational neuroscience. The Lab focuses on developing new algorithms for the analysis of human and animal brain imaging data. These are based on computational models of neural dynamics and state of the art machine learning techniques. Particular emphasis is put on applications in Computational Psychiatry and developing models of brain pathology. Also, the Lab develops brain theories that can explain brain pathology, using theoretical tools from deepneural networks and Bayesian brain theories. The Post Doc shall conduct research in one or more of these areas. He/she will have the opportunity to shape the details of their project based on their specific interests. The successful candidate should have a PhD in applied mathematics, computational neuroscience, engineering or physics. Expertise in one or more modern scientific computing programming language (Python, Matlab or R) is essential. This two-week school will teach participants to use the Nengo simulation package to build state-of-the-art cognitive and neural models to run both in simulation and on neuromorphic hardware. Summer school participants will be given on-site access to Loihi, Intel’s neuromorphic research chip [1], and will learn to run high-level applications on Loihi using Nengo! More generally, Nengo provides users with a versatile and powerful environment for designing cognitive and neural systems, and has been used to build what is currently the world's largest functional brain model, Spaun [2], which includes spiking deep learning, reinforcement learning, adaptive motor control, and cognitive control networks. Human Neocortical Neurosolver

Greetings — We are happy to announce a methods on our new software Human Neocortical Neurosolver (HNN) for cell and circuit level interpretation of human electro- and magneto-encephalography (EEG/MEG) is now in press in eLife and will be highlighted in the next issue of eLife digest. https://elifesciences.org/articles/51214 Human Neocortical Neurolover (HNN), a new software tool for interpreting the cellular and network origin of human MEG/EEG data. Magneto- and electro-encephalography (MEG/EEG) non-invasively record human brain activity with millisecond resolution providing reliable markers of healthy and disease states. Relating these macroscopic signals to underlying cellular- and circuit-level generators is a limitation that constrains using MEG/EEG to reveal novel principles of information processing or to translate findings into new therapies for neuropathology. To address this problem, we built Human Neocortical Neurosolver (HNN, https://hnn.brown.edu) software. HNN has a graphical user interface designed to help researchers and clinicians interpret the neural origins of MEG/EEG. HNN's core is a neocortical circuit model that accounts for biophysical origins of electrical currents generating MEG/EEG. Data can be directly compared to simulated signals and parameters easily manipulated to develop/test hypotheses on a signal's origin. Tutorials teach users to simulate commonly measured signals, including event related potentials and brain rhythms. HNN's ability to associate signals across scales makes it a unique tool for translational neuroscience research. Creating subject-specific mathematical models to understand the brain The brain is a complex machine and brain function remains yet to be fully understood. This project works at the intersection of dynamical modelling, statistical signal processing, statistical inference and machine learning to develop subject specific mathematical models of the brain that can be used to infer brain states and monitor and image the brain. This work is centred around a neurophysiological variable estimation framework we have been developing that can be applied to all kinds of brain activity recordings. There are two projects to be completed under this program and we are looking for a different student for each of these projects. Project 1: specifically extend our neurophysiological variable estimation framework to different classes of neural population models validated from microscopic data. Project 2: specifically extend our neurophysiological estimation framework to coupled networks of neural population models applied to in vivo human recordings. These projects are critical for applications of our estimation framework to all kinds of neuroscientific studies (e.g. of rest, sensation, cognition, movement or abnormal behaviour) where different models and networks are more appropriate and parsimonious for different kinds of situations and will open new ways to understanding brain function. Did you encounter any problems? Were you successful? We are curious to hear your story. This is the reason why we are editing a special issue of ReScience to collect these stories. The ten years reproducibility challenge is an invitation for researchers to try to run the code they've created for a scientific publication that was published more than ten years ago. This code can be anything (statistical analysis, numerical simulation, data processing, etc.), can be written in any language and can address any scientific domain. The only mandatory condition to enter the challenge is to have published a scientific article before 2010, in a journal or a conference with proceedings, which contains results produced by code, irrespectively of whether this code was published in some form at the time or not. Note that we do not ask you to write a new version of your old code. We ask you instead to try to make your old code to run on modern hardware/software (with minimal modifications) in order to check if you can obtain the exact same results that were publised at least ten years ago. Sounds easy? We have good reasons to think this might be more difficult than you think. And maybe the first problem you'll have to solve is to find your own source code. A postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Carmen Canavier at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. This is an exciting opportunity to participate as a theoretician in a synergistic loop with John White's experimental group at Boston University on gamma oscillations in excitatory and inhibitory neural networks. The successful candidate must be creative and able to work as part of a team. Both network level and single cell modeling using NEURON will be utilized in concert with nonlinear dynamics and other analytical methods to develop and test neural signatures of different oscillatory mechanisms. Quantitative training in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or a related field is required, as well as some programming expertise. ** *Dear colleagues, * * there are several positions open in the humanoid, cognitive, neuro-, and collaborative robotics group coordinated by Dr. Matej Hoffmann (https://sites.google.com/site/matejhof/) at the Department of Cybernetics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague. The positions include PhD, post-doc, and tenure-track. Group webpage: https://cyber.felk.cvut.cz/research/groups-teams/humanoids/ The topics are in the context of the newly starting 5-year project entitled “Whole-body awareness for safe and natural interaction: from brains to collaborative robots” for excellence in fundamental research from the Czech Science Foundation (see https://cyber.felk.cvut.cz/news/new-gacr-expro-project <https://cyber.felk.cvut.cz/news/new-gacr-expro-project/>for more information) and include: * Employing humanoid robots with artificial skin to construct embodied computational models of body and peripersonal space representations * Neural network models of multisensory integration and peripersonal space * Physical human-robot interaction with special focus on tactile and proximity sensing * Social human-robot interaction focusing on touch and interpersonal distance Open positions: PhD student. The topic will be co-defined with the student depending on his skills and interests. The standard duration of the PhD study is 4 years. The funding corresponds to a gross salary of CZK 40 000 per month (approx. 1600 EUR), plus direct bonuses for scientific achievements such as top-tier publications. Postdoc. The postdoc will independently conduct research and will also be involved in shaping the research of the group and supervising students. The gross salary will be in the range of CZK 50 000-70 000 per month (approx. 2000-2700 EUR) depending on qualification, plus direct bonuses for scientific achievements such as top-tier publications. Tenure-track. This position is open in the humanoids group or in the broader context of Vision for Robotics and Autonomous Systems group (https://cyber.felk.cvut.cz/research/groups-teams/vras/) and the Research Center For Informatics (http://rci.cvut.cz/) Robots and infrastructure The humanoids group has at its disposal several humanoid robots (iCub - procurement being finalized, 2 Naos - 1 with whole-body sensitive skin) and collaborative or lightweight manipulators (KUKA LBR iiwa, UR10e with Airskin, Kinova Gen3). Additional infrastructure includes several robot hands (Barrett Hand BH8-282, QB Soft Hand) and grippers, a 3D Motion Capture System, Impact measuring devices (GTE), and integrated devices for collaborative robots (http://smartrobots.it/) The group has also access to the facilities of the Research Center for Informatics such as a high-performance computational cluster.
