Postdoc position in computational systems neuroscience, Voigts Lab, Janelia

The Voigts Lab at HHMI Janelia Research Campus is recruiting postdocs. We'll work on how neocortex builds and uses models of the world to give animals complex cognitive abilities. The lab will specifically attempt to go beyond repeated stimulus-response associations, instead using complex, naturalistic spatial behaviors in rodents to study flexible cognition. We'll be able to throw significant technology at the problem of combining sufficient measurements with complex naturalistic behavior, but more importantly we'll have to overcome the challenge of modeling, analyzing, and ultimately learning from data when there are few or no trials to average over. We will use experimental approaches, such as designing new tasks where mice make decisions based on incomplete knowledge of their environment, as well as developing new computational techniques to study circuit mechanisms in the context of unconstrained behaviours. We're part of the new Mechanistic Cognitive Neuroscience research area at Janelia, where there are unique resources for this type of work. We'll work closely with experimental, theoretical, methods, and machine learning researchers in and outside of Janelia to make this research program possible, collaborative, and fun. The KiloNeurons ERC project: post-doctoral position in theoretical neuroscience

The Burak Lab at the Hebrew University is seeking to hire a postdoctoral research fellow in theoretical neuroscience. The postdoctoral fellow will take part in the ERC funded KiloNeurons project, led by Edvard Moser (Kavli Institute for Theoretical Neuroscience, NTNU) and Yoram Burak (Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences and the Racah Institute of Physics). The project aims to identify how thousands of neurons in the mammalian cortex interact with each other to achieve computational and cognitive functions. The KiloNeurons project offers opportunities to work on diverse theoretical and computational questions. These involve approaches ranging from pure theoretical modelling to analysis and interpretation of large-scale neural data. Theoretical tools include methods from nonlinear dynamics, machine learning, statistical physics, and information theory. A generous budget is available for travel between Israel and Norway to facilitate close interaction with members of the Moser lab, for travel and participation in scientific meetings, and for purchase of computing equipment. We are looking for candidates with excellent demonstrated abilities in theoretical research, strong intellectual curiosity and drive, a keen interest in computational neuroscience, and an interest in relating theory to experimental data. Candidates must have an excellent research record in theoretical neuroscience, theoretical physics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field. *Title*: Neuro-inspired macroscale model of tCS-induced changes on epileptic networks *Context*. Epilepsy refers to a neurological disorder that affects about 1% of the general population. Recent findings indicate that non-invasive brain transcranial current stimulation (tCS) is safe and of therapeutic promise in epilepsy. However, it is not yet indicated as a standard treatment due to major scientific limitations: unknown mechanisms of action, insufficient account for patient-specific factors, poor understanding of short- and long-term effects. The ambition of the GALVANI Project (ERC-SyG 2019; 2020-26) is to transform the care of a large fraction of patients living with drug-resistant epilepsies by solving a fundamental problem: to efficiently target and control large-scale epileptic brain networks with tCS-induced neuromodulatory weak electric fields. *Rationale. *Electrical stimulation (supra-threshold) and neuromodulation (sub-threshold) are two different methods that can be used to alter brain plasticity in order to lower hyperexcitability and subsequently decrease the occurrence of epileptiform events. These events are generated large-scale brain networks involving interconnected distant brain regions characterized by an increase of excitability. In this context, computational models are an efficient way to understand features of epileptiform events recorded in patients, either intracerebrally or from electrodes located on the scalp. In addition, it is an efficient tool to analyze the impact of tCS on the brain and optimize its therapeutic effect. *Objective. *This research focuses on neuromodulation induced by transcranial current stimulation (tCS). The objective of the proposed PhD position is to design a neuro-inspired macroscale model of the brain that will simulate electroencephalographic (EEG) signals under 2 conditions: spontaneous activity and tCS. The model will be able to simulate the activity of epileptogenic networks generating epileptic spikes during interictal periods. It will account for immediate (acute) and lasting (short- or long-term) effects of neuromodulatory weak electric fields, which remain elusive. Simulations will help the design of tCS-based neuromodulation strategies aimed at lowering interictal epileptic spikes. *Methods. *The model will start from previous results of the team (Merlet et al. PlosOne 2013, Bensaid et al. Frontiers in Neuroscience 2019). It will consist of a macroscale network of interconnected (edges) neural populations (nodes) located in the neocortex. Neurophysiological activity of each node will be generated by a neural mass model. The whole model will allow for simulation of normal and epileptic EEG activity (interictal spikes, ictal activity) under 2 conditions: spontaneous and tCS. Simulated signals will be compared to EEG signals recorded in patients under similar conditions. The model will be embedded into an existing software named COALIA developed in Python. tCS induced E-fields will be simulated using SimNibs (to start with) and with tools developed at Neuroelectrics. Optimal parameters reducing epileptic activity will be determined. *Scientific environment. *GALVANI involves three partners: LTSI-Inserm (Rennes), AMU-APHM (Marseille) and Neuroelectrics (Barcelona). It is intended to develop the next generation of brain stimulation solutions. GALVANI can be viewed as a distributed lab (Rennes-Barcelona-Marseille) working under a common policy to ensure coherence of research and intense collaboration and cross-fertilization. Fellows will be co-supervised in a unique, shared environment with exposure to science, technology and clinical experience. *Candidate profile.* The research project is at the interface between biomathematics (neuro-inspired models), biophysics (electric field models), and neuroscience/neurology (epilepsy). The candidate will preferably have some background in dynamical systems, computational neuroscience/systems biology or in electrical engineering, with experience in bio-signal processing and biophysics. Knowledge in electrophysiology and/or EEG analysis would be an asset. The PhD fellow will join a multidisciplinary team including research scientists in biomedical engineering, neurophysiological modeling, bio-physics, signal processing, electrophysiology, neurology. - *Contract*. However, until recently, the field lacked an appropriate set of techniques for simultaneously measuring neural activity and behavior in freely moving animals, forcing investigators to use immobilized animals performing simplistic behavioral tasks. Synergistic technological breakthroughs in fluorescent brain imaging and behavioral tracking approaches have paved the way to a new type of neuroscience that enables tracking behavior in setups compatible with brain imaging and manipulation, even at the single-cell level, using optical electrophysiology techniques. A diversity of such neurobehavioral imaging systems have been recently invented, spanning the range of conventional model organisms including C. Elegans, Flies, Zebrafish, and Rodents. Each species and approach showcases unique technical challenges, achievements, and opportunities. Our aim with this Research Topic is to provide an overview of this new field. We will present not only the technological advances but also discuss the novel type of experiments and insights that they promise. To achieve that, we welcome articles that span the following categories: i) Algorithms and imaging systems for tracking and quantifying complex behaviors of freely moving animals; ii) Molecular tools and microscopes, enabling capturing or manipulating neuronal dynamics. Bio Susan Goldin-Meadow is the Beardsley Ruml Distinguished Service Professor in the Departments of Psychology and Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on the most basic building blocks of language and thought as they are developed in early childhood. Specifically, she is interested in uncovering linguistic components that are so basic they will arise in a child’s communication system even if the child has limited access to outside linguistic input. Professor Goldin-Meadow’s research has also generated more broadly applicable insights into how the spontaneous gestures that learners produce can reveal their readiness to learn language, math, and scientific concepts. Professor Goldin-Meadow is the founding Editor of Language Learning and Development, and has been president of the International Society for Gesture Studies, president of the Cognitive Development Society, chair of the Cognitive Science Society, and president of the Association for Psychological Society. The INCF Infrastructure Committee’s “Recommendations for repositories and science gateways from a neuroscience perspective” <https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-022-01334-1> has been published today, May 16, as a Comment in Scientific Data <https://www.nature.com/sdata/>. The project, initiated by the INCF Infrastructure Committee, aimed to develop an inclusive set of criteria that could apply to a wide and diverse range of digital services, including repositories, science gateways, data, and software. “We set out to develop criteria that were specific to neuroscience, but we realized during the process that our end result would be applicable to other data-heavy disciplines as well”, says Malin Sandström, coordinator for the Infrastructure Committee. “When you look at the problem closely, it turns out that many of the criteria have to do with best practices for how a service is run and governed, rather than with which types of data and other content it contains”. The work began in October 2020. A draft version <https://www.incf.org/criteria-checklist> was presented to the community at the INCF Assembly in April 2021, in a workshop <https://f1000research.com/documents/10-1026> with representatives from organizations engaged in similar projects, including FAIRSharing, FORCE11, and the Coalition of Open Access Repositories (COAR). A public first version of the criteria checklist was made available on the INCF portal <https://www.incf.org/criteria-checklist> in late 2021. With these criteria, INCF wants to help neuroscience researchers and students choose good services for their specific use cases and help service providers make good and future-proof decisions for setup and operations. Former Chair Wojtek Goscinski, now Chief Executive Officer at the Australian National Imaging Facility, explains: “Data repositories and scientific gateways are critical, but often underappreciated, components in the scientific workflow. It’s important that researchers can navigate the digital landscape to find the services that they need and to understand which services are fit-for-purpose. Likewise, repositories and gateways have increasing obligations to their users”. POSTDOC POSITIONS IN MODELING/ANALYSIS FOR UNDERSTANDING SLEEP OVERVIEW. A new NIH-funded collaboration between David Prober (Caltech), Thai Truong (USC) and Geoff Goodhill (Washington University in St Louis) aims to gain new insight into the neural circuits underlying sleep, through a combination of whole-brain neural recordings in zebrafish and theoretical/computational modeling. The Goodhill lab is now looking for 2 postdocs for the modeling and computational analysis components. PROJECT DETAILS. Using novel 2-photon imaging technologies Prober and Truong will record from the entire larval zebrafish brain at single-neuron resolution continuously for long periods of time, examining neural circuit activity during normal day-night cycles and in response to genetic and pharmacological perturbations. The Goodhill lab will analyze the resulting huge datasets using a variety of sophisticated computational approaches, and use these results to build new theoretical models that reveal how neural circuits interact to govern sleep. Theoretical and experimental work will be intimitely linked. APPLICANT PROFILE. Applicants for the positions in the Goodhill lab should have a strong background in mathematics/theory/computation applied to biological problems. Experience in modeling sleep processes is desirable but not required. LAB ENVIRONMENT. The Goodhill lab is an interdisciplinary environment of students and postdocs from a diverse array of backgrounds including neuroscience, mathematics, physics and engineering, working together on understanding neural circuit computation, particularly relating to neural development. We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to work in the area of computational motor neuroscience. Our research addresses fundamental questions on human motor control, with extensions to clinical applications and human-robot interactions. The candidate is expected to participate in one or more lines of research, including projects on the human control of complex objects in healthy and clinical populations, specifically stroke and autism, and the interrelation of timing in motor skills and perceptual tasks. We have several collaborators on these projects, including Pawan Sinha at MIT, Joo-Hyun Song at Brown University, and David Lin at Massachusetts General Hospital. The research is supported by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. The Action Lab has state-of-the-art experimental equipment, including 3D motion capture, three virtual reality set-ups, two robot manipulanda, force plates and wireless EMG. The fellowship will involve collaborations with research teams and laboratories associated with NeuroMat. The research to be developed by the post-doc fellow shall be strictly related to ongoing research lines developed by the NeuroMat team. The project may be developed at USP (São Paulo or Ribeirao Preto) or at UNICAMP (Campinas). We seek candidates capable of developing independent research in one of the research lines below. 1. Stochastic modeling of neurobiological data. 2. Acquisition, processing and quantitative analysis of neurobiological data. Candidates to the first research line are required to have a strong background in probability theory with emphasis on stochastic processes. When coupled with planning/learning, human models enable robots to display intelligent interactive behavior. However, crafting good human models remains difficult. In this talk, we’ll discuss facets of human modeling, starting with our efforts in capturing human trust in the robot. We’ll discuss a perspective that views trust as function learning and the impact this has in multi-task scenarios. Next, we will cover MIRROR, a new approach to quickly learn human models that are useful for (communication) planning. MIRROR is inspired by social projection theory, which hypothesizes that humans use self-models to understand others. In a similar manner, MIRROR leverages robot self-models learned using RL to bootstrap human modeling. We will examine how MIRROR performs relative to state-of-the-art methods using simulations and a human-subjects study. We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to work in the area of computational motor neuroscience. Our research addresses fundamental questions on human motor control, with extensions to clinical applications and also human-robot interactions. The candidate is expected to participate in several lines of research, including projects on the human control of complex objects in healthy and clinical population, specifically stroke and autism, and the interrelation of timing in motor skills and perceptual tasks. We have several collaborators on these projects, including Pawan Sinha at MIT, Joo-Hyun Song at Brown University, and David Lin at Massachusetts General Hospital. The research is supported by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. The Action Lab has state-of-the-art experimental equipment, including 3D motion capture, three virtual reality set-ups, two robot manipulanda, force plates and wireless EMG. The FBRI provides full access to outstanding infrastructure, including four research-dedicated Siemens 3T scanners, facilities for in vitro electrochemistry, neurosurgical collaborations for in vivo electrochemistry, and high-throughput computing clusters. The Barcelona summer school for Advanced Modelling of Behavior (BAMB! <http://www.bambschool.org>) teaches advanced techniques in model-based analysis of behavior (humans and other species) to cognitive and computational neuroscientists at PhD and early career levels. This will be achieved through structured lectures, talks, hands-on tutorials and group projects aimed at making knowledge obtained directly applicable to the participants' own research. We want the trainees to acquire both the conceptual bases and the technical skills that will enable them to pursue a full modelling approach on their own when they come back to their lab. The course is intended for PhD students and postdocs in cognitive and computational neuroscience with a solid background in computational/quantitative analysis to benefit maximally from the advanced training offered by the course. Proficiency in either Python or Matlab is also required. CAMP (Computational Approaches to Memory and Plasticity at NCBS, Bangalore) is a 16-day summer school where students will be trained in theoretical and computational modeling, pertaining to memory and plasticity in the brain, spanning different scales of space, time and complexity. This scientist will work with an international NeuroNex consortium (http://nxwm.io) studying the transcriptomic, cellular, and network basis of working memory. The project will incorporate analysis of multichannel neural data and computational models ranging from single neurons to spiking neural networks and machine learning algorithms. The researcher will work within a dynamic team and with data at multiple scales (transcriptomics, intracellular patch clamp, and extracellular spiking data). Research in this project utilizes a combination of large-scale numerical simulations, supervised/unsupervised learning, and analytical approaches. Prior experience with scientific computing languages (MATLAB, Julia, or Python) and/or low-level programming (C/C++) is preferred. Applications are invited for NIH funded post-doctoral research position in the laboratory of Dr. Maxim Bazhenov at the University of California, San Diego to study role of sleep in memory and learning using sophisticated computer models of brain dynamics. This project involves close collaboration with experimental laboratories. The ultimate goal of the work is to understand how sleep rhythms contribute to consolidation of memory for recent learning and how sensory or electrical stimulation during sleep can enhance memory consolidation (see, e.g., 10.7554/eLife.51005; 10.1093/cercor/bhaa228; 10.1523/JNEUROSCI.1427-19.2019). Our lab research interests also include other topics in neuroscience (e.g., olfaction, epilepsy) and artificial intelligence (e.g., lifelong learning, generalization, adversarial robustness) and lab members are encouraged to participate in multiple projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design of the anatomically realistic brain network models based on experimental data. These models will be used to understand network dynamics that are involved in the processes of memory consolidation during sleep, as well as guide data analysis and produce novel experimental predictions. Qualified applicants are expected to have background and experience in neuroscience, computational neuroscience, physics/engineering and/or mathematics. Programming experience with C/C++ is required. In our research, we develop deep networks for processing image data that handle scaling transformations and other image transformations in a theoretically well-founded manner. Our research in this area comprises both theoretical modelling of the influence of image transformations on different architectures for deep networks and the experimental evaluation of such networks on benchmark datasets to explore their properties. The work also comprises the creation of new benchmark datasets, to enable characterization of properties of deep networks that are not covered by existing datasets. Cerebellar computation postdoc

A postdoc position is available to build and analyze network models of cerebellar cortex that incorporate the diversity of cell types and synaptic connections observed in this structure. The goal of this research is to better understand the functions of these diverse cell types and connections. Approaches from statistical physics, nonlinear dynamics and machine learning will be used, and models will be constrained by new electrophysiological, transcriptomic and connectomic data. The postdoc will be jointly supervised by Wade Regehr (Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School) and Nicolas Brunel (Duke University). Nevertheless, the trigger events for the cognitive revolution of Homo sapiens as well as the reasons for this event being limited to a single species remain unknown. Using a multidisciplinary approach involving psychology, neurobiology, and phenomenology, I will propose a shift in the mechanisms underlying TNC, from TNC- 1 in primates/hominids to TNC-2 in Homo sapiens, to answer these questions. As the primates and hominin brain expanded during TNC-1, latent cognitive capabilities were incubated within its neural framework to be expressed with a simple rewiring among brain areas in TNC-2, a quick and inexpensive process but one that requires a unique set of preconditions to commence. This process was bootstrapped by the advanced function of “projection,” which enabled humans to recognize the “self” in particular time and space in the world, allowing the manipulation of this world (in both physical and symbolic dimensions) again in a positive feedback loop. Based on these, a new concept of a somatocentric holistic self will be proposed, represented as a more comprehensive body-in-the-world map in the primate brain, taking into account evolutionary aspects that characterize the human cognition and its implication in the emergence of self-consciousness. The overarching aim of the project is to understand how mental models become corrupted in depression/anxiety, and how psychedelics appear to reverse the corruption. A variety of world-class data sets on the structure and function of the brain are available to guide theoretical advances in the understanding of underlying brain computation, particularly in learning, perception, and decision making. These two posts form part of an interdisciplinary collaborative research project, “Statistical Physics of Cognition” funded by the UKRI and Wellcome. The aim of the project is to understand how neuronal avalanches relate to cognition. The postholders will be part of an interdisciplinary team including theorists, experimental neuroscientists and optical physicists aiming to solve this problem. The approach taken will be to perform large-scale neuronal imaging experiments to record the activity of thousands of neurons in the brains of mice performing cognitive tasks, to use advanced methods to analyse how distance from criticality is task-dependent, to develop models describing the role of avalanche dynamics in cognition, and to use graph theory, information theory and complexity theory to advance our understanding how large-scale network dynamics affect cognitive performance. As well as advancing our understanding of the way the brain operates, this may lead to new insights into how neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease cause degradation in cognitive function, and aid in the development of future treatments. Based in the Neural Coding and Neurodegenerative Disorders Laboratory led by Prof Simon Schultz, we are seeking two postdoctoral fellows to carry out neuroscience experiments involving mesoscopic two-photon imaging of neural activity from thousands of neurons in behaving mice. Applicants should have research experience in either systems neuroscience or in biomedical optics. A PhD in neuroscience, physics, or a cognate discipline is essential. Post 1 – Multiphoton optical microscopy. You will have expertise in biomedical optics, including the construction, maintenance and use of advanced optical apparatus for fluorescence imaging of neural activity, and an interest in neuroscience. Post 2 – Optical neurophysiology. You will have expertise in systems neuroscience, including experience in performing in vivo neurophysiology experiments, and expertise in processing and analysis of neurophysiological data. You will be based in the Neural Coding and Neurodegenerative Disease Laboratory led by Prof Simon Schultz and Dr Amanda Foust, in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London. We are currently looking for 3 postdoctoral positions in the Nicola Computational Neuroscience Lab ( http://www.nicolacomputationalneurosciencelab.com) at the University of Calgary, in Alberta Canada: *Postdoctoral Position 1* We are currently looking for a postdoctoral researcher for a 2-year position investigating the interplay between hippocampal and cortical dynamics in memory consolidation. The project will involve both simulating spiking neural networks, and analyzing real spiking data. The ideal postdoctoral researcher will have a PhD in mathematics, physics, or engineering, and will have a proven track-record in working with spiking neural networks. A knowledge of neuroscience is beneficial, but not strictly necessary. Familiarity with multi-unit recordings is also beneficial, but not strictly necessary.
