MIT challenge and workshop (July 19-20): The Algonauts project - explaining brain data with computational models

Dear community, The Algonauts Project has launched its first Challenge, Explaining the Human Visual Brain<http://algonauts.csail.mit.edu/>, inviting you to come up with a computer model of how the human brain sees and recognizes objects. Participants who develop the best models will be invited to present their work at a workshop July 19-20 at MIT in Cambridge, Mass. The overall goal of the Algonauts Project is to explain brain data with computational models, and to bring biological and AI researchers together on a common platform to advance human and machine intelligence research. We will be recruiting a diverse cohort of 100 Nottingham and Anne McLaren Research Fellows by the end of 2022, and as part of this we are particularly interested to recruit outstanding candidates to the Precision Imaging Beacon. Main responsibilities are: - Research on binaural hearing and auditory scene analysis with users of auditory neuronal prostheses (cochlear implants) - Development of listening tests and stimulation strategies using direct stimulation of cochlear implants - Measurement and modeling of neuronal processing and statistical analysis of the results - Publication in English-language scientific journals and presentations at conferences - Supervision of student projects, assistance with teaching and with raising external funding. The aim of the project is to combine neurophysiological measurements (fMRI and/or MEG/EEG) with data driven machine learning to characterize cortical consequences of hearing loss. The new Barcelona summer school for Advanced Modelling of Behavior (BAMB! <http://www.bambschool.org>) teaches advanced techniques in model-based analysis of behavior (humans and other species) to cognitive and computational neuroscientists at PhD and early career levels. This will be achieved through structured lectures, talks, hands-on tutorials and group project aimed at making knowledge obtained directly applicable to the participants' own research. We want the trainees to acquire both the conceptual bases and the technical skills that will enable them to pursue a full modelling approach on their own when they come back to their lab. The course is intended for PhD students and postdocs in cognitive and computational neuroscience with solid background in computational/quantitative analysis to benefit maximally from the advanced training offered by the course. Proficiency in either Python or Matlab is also required. We will seek a nice blend of experimentalists (cognitive psychology / neuroscience) and theoreticians (with or without experience in cognitive modeling). The Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit, a world-class centre for theoretical neuroscience and machine learning, invites applications for one or more postdoctoral training fellowships in theoretical neuroscience. We are looking especially for someone with an interest and/or background in synaptic plasticity and learning. POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN COMPUTATIONAL MODELING OF BRAIN NETWORKS   Currently Available: The Stanford Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Laboratory invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in computational modeling of human brain imaging data using deep neural networks. The successful candidate will be involved in a multidisciplinary project that seeks to develop novel computational frameworks for robust identification of neurobiological signatures of psychiatric and neurological disorders combining deep learning and convolution networks and dynamic brain circuit analyses with task and resting-state fMRI. Clinical disorders currently under investigation include autism, ADHD, anxiety and mood disorders, learning disabilities, schizophrenia, and Parkinson’s disease. We seek talented and highly-motivated individuals with a strong background in at least one of these areas: deep learning algorithms and optimization (theory and practical implementations); computational modeling, statistical inference, and machine learning, especially as applied to fMRI and MRI data.
