Neurotheory postdoc opportunities in San Diego

The Kennedy lab is recruiting for multiple funded postdoctoral positions in theoretical and computational neuroscience, following our recent lab move to Scripps Research in sunny San Diego, California. Ongoing projects in the lab span topics in reservoir computing, reinforcement learning/control theory analysis of complex behavior, neuromechanical whole-organism modeling, computational behavior analysis, and joint analysis/modeling of neural and behavioral data collected in socially interacting animals. We have newly acquired funding to characterize progression of behavioral phenotypes in Parkinson’s, to model cellular/circuit mechanisms underlying internal state-dependent changes in neural population dynamics, and to characterize the neural and behavioral dynamics of pairs of interacting animals across multiple species. We also have openings for machine learning work in imitation learning/generative modeling of mouse social interactions using a massive 15-lab dataset. Projects are flexible and can be tailored to applicants’ research and training goals, and there are abundant opportunities for new collaboration with local experimental groups. San Diego has a fantastic research community and very high quality of life, with excellent support for international students at Scripps. Our campus is located at the Pacific coast, at the northern edge of UCSD not far from the Salk Institute. The Neuroscience department at Scripps is a powerhouse in the study of the nervous system’s sensing of and interaction with the rest of the body, making it an ideal environment for the study of internal state-dependent modulation of behavior. Recent evidence has converged to suggest that major portions of the human cerebellum are linked to cognitive and affective functions. In this talk, I will present new insights into the functional organization of the human cerebellum. Our findings reveal three distinct somatomotor representations, including a newly identified third map that is spatially dissociated from the two well-established body representations. Between these body representations, a large megacluster extending across Crus I/II was consistently found with subregions linked to higher-order cerebral association networks. Within this megacluster, specific regions responded to domain-flexible cognitive control, while juxtaposed regions differentially responded to language, social, and spatial/episodic task demands. Similarly organized clusters also exist in the caudate consistent with the presence of multiple basal ganglia–cerebellar–cerebral cortical circuits that maintain functional specialization across their entire distributed extents. *About VVTNS : Launched as the World Wide Theoretical Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), Speakers have the occasion to talk about theoretical aspects of their work which cannot be discussed in a setting where the majority of the audience consists of experimentalists. But evidence supporting this surmise is not common. Dr. Messinger employs machine learning of audio, video, and ultrawideband signals in naturalistic contexts to highlight the role of individual and interactive dynamics in constituting developmental outcomes. He will discuss a series of salient examples linking the emergence of interactive competencies with developmental outcomes. These include the emergence of interactive smiling and attachment, as well as the emergence of autism and preschool language competencies. Dr. Messinger will conclude with a discussion of the strengths and limitations of current empirical research linked to dynamic systems and developmental cascades perspectives. Short Bio: Dr. Daniel Messinger is a professor and Director of the Child Division in the Department of Psychology at the University of Miami where he is the Director of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Program at the Institute for Data Science and Computing. He employs computational approaches to big behavioral data to understand the interactive origins of social, language, and emotional development. His research focuses on social and communicative development in typically developing children, children with hearing loss, children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and children whose communicative development is affected by prenatal drug exposure and poverty. Hello, EPFL is organizing a competition in collaboration with the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders. The competition aims to develop epileptic seizure detection algorithms for assisting in the analysis of scalp electroencephalography. It is open to anyone with skills in machine learning and artificial intelligence. This competition should help identify algorithms well suited for hospital adoption while simultaneously pushing for open and reproducible science. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Permanent position in mathematical stochastic modeling of neuromodulation in brain networks and application to mental disorders ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The new research team NECTARINE at INRIA in Strasbourg / France aims to create a synergy between clinicians and mathematical researchers to develop new healthcare technologies. The team works on stochastic microscopic network models to describe macroscopic experimental data, such as behavior and/or encephalographic. They collaborate closely with clinicians and choose their research focus along the clinical applications. Major scientific objectives are stochastic multi-scale simulations and mean-field descriptions of neural activity on the macroscopic scale. Moreover, merging experimental data and numerical models by machine learning techniques is an additional objective. The team's clinical research focuses on neuromodulation of patients suffering from deficits in attention and temporal prediction. We invite applications for an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher in the area of computational neuroscience or systems biology. A new collaborative project with Kyushu U (#) has been launched to elucidate biochemical signaling involved in the development of the olfactory system. We are working on a project to simulate how neural circuits in the brain acquire function through development. As an example, we are focusing on the process of mitral cell dendritic pruning that leads to the acquisition of odor selectivity (Fujimoto 2023, Dev Cell 58, 1221–1236). This process is governed by the coupling of biochemical signaling of small G proteins and neuronal electrical activity. In addition, the neural circuit simulation will be performed to elucidate the emergent process of odor information processing. The NEURON simulator or other platform simulators will be useful for this project.
