We use advanced machine learning algorithms and seek a skilled, motivated, and enthusiastic individual with a Master's degree / postdoctoral fellow to join the lab. The position: Education: Candidates must have a Master's degree or a Ph.D. degree (or towards completion) in computational neuroscience, biology, computer science, data science, or a related discipline. Computer and General Skills: Knowledge of experimental statistics and excellent programming skills are required (Python, Matlab). High-level expertise in neuroimaging analyses is a plus. Previous experience in machine learning analysis and computational modeling is a plus. Takes initiative. Strong communications skills and research productivity, as well as the ability to work effectively in a research team. It will bring together international and local students under the tutelage of the world's leading experts in the field. Efficient representations of fast dynamic stimuli in populations of ON- and OFF-cells Within the DFG priority program "Evolutionary Optimisation of Neuronal Processing" and in an experiment-theory collaboration with the Benda/Grewe lab in Tübingen, we are looking for a PhD candidate to work on signal transmission of time-dependent signals in the electrosensory system of weakly electric fish. Join us for RELab, *a unique experimental workshop in the scenic location of Lake Constance, Germany.* Unlike well-established scientific frameworks relying on synthetic stimuli, working with real, complex naturalistic stimuli presents unique challenges in tractability, interpretability, and relevance. A postdoc position is available at the Department of Functional and Systems Neurobiology of the Cajal Institute (https://cajal.csic.es/en/home/) part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in collaboration with the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. The aim of this position is to develop a new framework for the analysis and interpretation of animal behavior and electrophysiological data from a high-throughput memory-based behavioral paradigm ( https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnbeh.2020.00064/full) developed in the Jercog Lab. Such a framework will involve different theories and modelling approaches such as reinforcement learning, stochastic decision processes, and history-dependent biases over a range of timescales from seconds to months, under the co-supervision of Yashar Ahmadian <https://cbl.eng.cam.ac.uk/ahmadian/>, University of Cambridge. The overarching aim of the project is to understand how long-term memories affect the decision making process in a volatile environment, focusing in particular on the hippocampal contribution to control (e.g. Lengyel & Dayan 2008 <https://proceedings.neurips.cc/paper_files/paper/2007/file/1f4477bad7af3616…>, Stachenfled et al. 2017), and using approaches such as rational control (Wu et al 2020 <https://www.pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas.1912336117>) to infer the internal beliefs and models used by animals in the task. For example, we cannot see every feature of the light field that reaches our eyes; temporal resolution is limited by transmission noise and delays, and spatial resolution is limited by the finite number of photoreceptors and output cells in the retina. Classical efficient coding theory describes how sensory systems can maximize information transmission given such capacity constraints, but it treats all input features equally. Not all inputs are, however, of equal value to the organism. Our work quantifies whether and how the brain selectively encodes stimulus features, specifically predictive features, that are most useful for fast and effective movements. We have shown that efficient predictive computation starts at the earliest stages of the visual system in the retina. We borrow techniques from machine learning, statistical physics, and information theory to assess how we get terrific, predictive vision from these imperfect (lagged and noisy) component parts. In broader terms, we aim to build a more complete theory of efficient encoding in the brain, and along the way have found some intriguing connections between approaches to coarse graining in biology, machine learning, and physics. *About VVTNS : Created as the World Wide Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), its aim is to be a platform to exchange ideas among theoreticians. Post-doc position offer (ref: INSERM-RECSEIZ) Neuro-inspired models of recurrent epileptic seizures for the investigation of mechanisms underlying repeated tDCS sessions Context. Epilepsy refers to a neurological disorder that affects about 1% of the general population. Recent findings indicate that non-invasive brain transcranial current stimulation (tCS) is safe and of therapeutic promise in epilepsy. However, it is not yet indicated as a standard treatment due to major scientific limitations: unknown mechanisms of action, insufficient account for patient-specific factors, poor understanding of short- and long-term effects. The ambition of the GALVANI Project (ERC-SyG 2019; 2020-26) is to transform the care of a large fraction of patients living with drug-resistant epilepsies by solving a fundamental problem: to efficiently target and control large-scale epileptic brain networks with tCS-induced neuromodulatory weak electric fields (https://www.galvani-lab.eu/) Rationale. The mechanisms underlying long-term effects of neuromodulation induced by weak electric fields remain poorly understood. To gain insights into these mechanisms, a new generation of experimentally-validated computational “hybrid” brain models is being developed in the project. These models combine neurophysiological models of neuronal networks with biophysical models of weak field effects. We recently developed a full human computational brain model able to generate realistic surface EEG and intracranial signal similar to those recorded in epileptic patients (see Wendling et al., CLINPH, 2024). Objective. The objective of the proposed research position is to design novel neuro-inspired models able to explain why and how the repetition of tDCS sessions (over days and weeks) impacts the seizure occurrence frequency. Methods. Mesoscale (neuronal population level) computational models allowing for the simulation of a single epileptic seizure will be used. They will be extended to account for the recurrence of seizures, as observed in human focal epilepsies. Then, tCS-induced weak electric fields will be integrated into the models and their cumulative effects on seizure occurrence will be studied, explaining why some patients respond to multi-sessions of tDCS while others do not. Models will use the Neural Mass Model (NMM) formalism. They will be developed in Python. They will extend models developed in the lab. Strong background is available. Scientific domains. Engineering (computational, biomedical); Physics (biophysics, electromagnetism); neuroscience; Medicine (neurology); Computer Science (computing in maths, engineering and Medicine) Scientific environment. GALVANI involves three partners: LTSI-Inserm (Rennes), AMU-APHM (Marseille) and Neuroelectrics (Barcelona). It is intended to develop the next generation of brain stimulation solutions. GALVANI can be viewed as a distributed lab (Rennes-Barcelona-Marseille) working under a common policy to ensure coherence of research and intense collaboration and cross-fertilization. Post-doc position offer (ref: INSERM-RECSEIZ) Neuro-inspired models of recurrent epileptic seizures for the investigation of mechanisms underlying repeated tDCS sessions Context. Epilepsy refers to a neurological disorder that affects about 1% of the general population. Recent findings indicate that non-invasive brain transcranial current stimulation (tCS) is safe and of therapeutic promise in epilepsy. However, it is not yet indicated as a standard treatment due to major scientific limitations: unknown mechanisms of action, insufficient account for patient-specific factors, poor understanding of short- and long-term effects. The ambition of the GALVANI Project (ERC-SyG 2019; 2020-26) is to transform the care of a large fraction of patients living with drug-resistant epilepsies by solving a fundamental problem: to efficiently target and control large-scale epileptic brain networks with tCS-induced neuromodulatory weak electric fields ( <https://www.galvani-lab.eu/> https://www.galvani-lab.eu/) Rationale. The mechanisms underlying long-term effects of neuromodulation induced by weak electric fields remain poorly understood. To gain insights into these mechanisms, a new generation of experimentally-validated computational hybrid brain models is being developed in the project. These models combine neurophysiological models of neuronal networks with biophysical models of weak field effects. We recently developed a full human computational brain model able to generate realistic surface EEG and intracranial signal similar to those recorded in epileptic patients ( <https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38520800/> see Wendling et al., CLINPH, 2024). Objective. The objective of the proposed research position is to design novel neuro-inspired models able to explain why and how the repetition of tDCS sessions (over days and weeks) impacts the seizure occurrence frequency. Methods. Mesoscale (neuronal population level) computational models allowing for the simulation of a single epileptic seizure will be used. They will be extended to account for the recurrence of seizures, as observed in human focal epilepsies. Then, tCS-induced weak electric fields will be integrated into the models and their cumulative effects on seizure occurrence will be studied, explaining why some patients respond to multi-sessions of tDCS while others do not. Models will use the Neural Mass Model (NMM) formalism. They will be developed in Python. They will extend models developed in the lab. Strong background is available. Scientific domains. The lab of Constantin Rothkopf (https://www.pip.tu-darmstadt.de/) at the Centre for Cognitive Science @ TU Darmstadt is looking for PhD and Postdoc applicants interested in becoming part of the ERC project ACTOR. While some positions are focused on human behavioral experiments others are more focused on computational work. The goal of this project is to use both human behavioral experiments and computational modeling to understand human sequential behavior in tasks including continuous psychophysics, visual behaviors such as gaze selection and blinking, sensorimotor control involving intuitive physics, navigation, and food preparation in the framework of sequential decision making/planning/optimal control/RL. Our group is part of the Centre for Cognitive Science and the AI Center at TU Darmstadt, which are home to an internationally outstanding group of PIs and junior researchers working in the areas of computational cognitive science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. We are part of several research consortia and engage in multiple fruitful research collaborations. The lab has state of the art equipment for eye and body tracking, VR, naturalistic task monitoring, psychophysics and access to one of the most generous computing infrastructures in Germany. It will also involve carrying out research into the physiology, anatomy and behaviour of C. elegans, to ensure the simulations are biologically realistic. Code will be open source from the start and active interaction with the community of researchers in this area will be required. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in neuroscience or a related field, and experience in developing open source tools for investigating (neuro)biological function, a publication record demonstrating the use of such tools in original scientific research, and an active interest in making their research accessible to the wider community. For appointment to Grade 8 (Senior Research Fellow), the candidate will have substantial postdoctoral experience, a strong publication track record in this area, evidence of the ability to sustain independent research, and an established reputation in their field as a proponent of open science. Our research is focused on the computational neuroscience of astrocytes. Broadly, we study how astrocytes interact with neurons and other glial cells. We are looking for a PhD student who is interested in developing a computational model of the BBB in the following project: *Project Description:* Interactions among astrocytes and endothelial cells (EC) forming blood vessels are essential to building a properly functional blood-brain barrier (BBB). Astrocyte-specific signaling molecules modulate tight junctions (TJ) between EC, thereby controlling BBB sealing properties and, thus, the transendothelial blood-brain trafficking of various substances. Any disruption in these events may lead to the onset of brain disorders. Indeed, an impaired morphology of astrocytes and reduced TJ protein expression characterizes the leaky BBB in postmortem brains of major depressive disorder (MDD) patients. Epidemiological data also revealed sex differences in MDD prevalence, with women twice as affected as men. Intriguingly, the disruption of the BBB in female mice induces depression-like behaviors. Thus, there is a high need to investigate sex-dependent cellular and molecular mechanisms that link a leaky BBB with the etiopathogenesis of MDD to identify alternative disease trajectories, which might be targeted by personalized treatments. The project includes experimental and theoretical work, which is highly interconnected, and we will gain much more insights by combining *in vitro*, *in vivo,* and *in silico* studies. The aim of the project is to develop computational models that explain how the visual system evolves following the onset of pathologies associated with visual field deficits (e.g., in patients with macular degeneration or retinis pigmentosa). We will be specifically interested in the neuroplasticity mechanisms that may underly the visual rehabilitations observed in some animal models of these pathologies (see e.g., Shao et al., 2014; Burnat et al., 2017). It will be realized using spiking neural networks trained with data collected by event-based cameras from partially occluded visual scenes (see e.g., Moore et al., 2021). The outputs of the networks after training will be compared to those observed in neural recordings and/or in behavioural experiments realized in patients (the CerCo has a privileged connection with the Retina Center of the Purpan hospital in Toulouse). The candidates should be willing to work in a multidisciplinary environment which combines AI, neurosciences and ophthalmology, have a good level in English, very good mathematical and programming skills and be interested in neurobiology. Some knowledge in neurosciences/ cognitive sciences would be a plus. The research will mainly take place in Toulouse, a student city (Toulouse is the second university hub in France) with high quality of life located in the south west of France (close to the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean Sea and the Spanish border). This has been intensively studied at the local level, where dynamics is described by pairwise correlations. Recent advances in simultaneous recordings of many neurons have allowed researchers to address the question at the global level, such as for the dimensionality of population dynamics. Our work contributes to this effort by analyzing the impact of connectivity statistics, including certain motifs, on the bulk and outlier covariance eigenvalues. By considering linearized dynamics around a steady state, we obtained analytically the covariance spectrum which exhibits a signature long tail robust to model variants and matches zebrafish calcium imaging data. This provides a local circuit mechanism for shaping the geometry of population dynamics and a quantitative benchmark for interpreting data. *About VVTNS : Created as the World Wide Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), its aim is to be a platform to exchange ideas among theoreticians. Grand Challenge on Neural Decoding at BioCAS 2024

Apologies for Cross posting ---------------------------------- Dear all We are pleased to announce the Grand Challenge on “Neural Decoding for Motor Control of non-Human Primates” at IEEE BioCAS 2024. About The need to restore their ability to perform activities for daily living has motivated the development of a host of assistive technologies. The most promising among the reported ones is the intra-cortical Brain-Machine Interface (iBMI). iBMIs aim to substantially improve patients' lives affected by spinal cord injury or debilitating neurodegenerative disorders such as tetraplegia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis etc. An important block in the signal processing chain is the intention decoder that converts the neural signal to a command for driving an actuator (e.g. wheelchair, cursor in screen etc.). While Kalman Filters have been the algorithm of choice historically, the recent improvements of deep neural networks (DNN) raise the question whether they can outperform traditional signal processing techniques. Moreover, integrating such decoders in the implant can provide an effective solution to data compression which is urgently needed to enable wireless iBMIs. However, the computational complexity of the decoder has to be reduced to fit within the power budget of an implant. Recent advances in DNN techniques such as model compression, quantization and new networks like spiking neural networks may offer solutions in this direction. This IEEE BioCAS Grand Challenge is geared in that direction and aims to push the boundary for neural decoder design toward next-generation BMI systems. We leverage the framework of Neurobench (https://arxiv.org/abs/2304.04640) developed for benchmarking neuromorphic systems to enable fair comparisons between different decoder designs. Post-doc in computational modeling of catatonia (Benoît Girard, ISIR, Sorbonne Université, Paris) A postdoc position (12+ month) is opened at the Institute of Intelligent Systems and Robotics (ISIR, Sorbonne Université & CNRS). We are looking for a young and enthusiast researcher trained in computational neuroscience or neuro-robotics to contribute to the development of a computational model of catatonia. It is based on a new theory and preliminary results obtained in the lab (Aubin et al., 2022), dealing with the study of alteration of dynamic regimes observed in models of cortico-baso-thalamo- cortical loops. Results obtained with a population model have to be reproduced and extended with a spiking model, as well as connected to motor control module so as to investigate the motor symptoms of catatonia. The project builds on an ongoing collaboration between Benoît Girard (ISIR, computational neuroscience), David Cohen (ISIR and Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, clinical expertise) and Ghilès Mostafaoui (ETIS at Cergy-Pontoise Université, robotics and motor control). Although central, this hypothesis has never been fully tested, yet. Indeed, progress has been limited by the lack of approaches for studying brain interactions beyond pairwise relations, the so-called higher order interactions (HOIs). Our objective is to build a theoretical and data analysis framework to demonstrate the role of HOIs in human brain networks supporting causal learning. The Hinteract project will be composed of three scientific work packages (WPs). WP1 will develop a novel informational theoretical approach to infer task-related (functional) HOIs from neural time series and will characterise HOIs supporting causal learning using a multiscale dataset including magnetoencephalography (MEG) and intracranial stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) data. WP2 will develop a network science formalism to analyse the structure and dynamics of functional HOIs patterns, and it will characterise the hierarchical organisation of learning-related HOIs inferred in WP1. WP3 will compile and share the neuroinformatics tools developed in the project and it will make it interoperable with the EBRAINS infrastructure. Overall, our project will reveal whether causal learning is supported by cerebral HOIs, and produce a theoretical and computational framework for the study of HOIs in brain networks that will be shared with the scientific community. Yet, its effect on neural dynamics can be counterintuitive. Here, we analyzed and theoretically modeled neuronal responses to visual and optogenetic inputs in mouse and monkey V1. We found that in both species, optogenetic activation of excitatory neurons had weak or no effects on the distribution of firing rates across the population, but strongly modulated single-cell activity, a phenomenon which we call neuronal reshuffling. Through theoretical analysis and numerical investigations, we show that neuronal reshuffling emerges in strongly-coupled, randomly-connected networks via strong feedback inhibition, provided that the optogenetic input is sufficiently heterogeneous and weak. As perfect reshuffling was observed only when measuring cells whose orientation preference matched the orientation of the presented stimulus (in the monkey data), we extended our analysis to networks with a connection probability and inputs that depend on the cell's feature preference. We show that this model can be theoretically described as interactions between the tuned activity, encoding sensory features, and the untuned baseline activity. Finally, we show that these models can produce rate reshuffling via strong, effective inhibition of the tuned response by the untuned baseline and work out an intuition for this phenomenon. *About VVTNS : Created as the World Wide Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), its aim is to be a platform to exchange ideas among theoreticians. We invite applications for our 4th annual Summer School in Computational Neuroscience, Neurotechnology and Neuro-inspired AI (ISRC-CN3), hosted at the Intelligent Systems Research Centre (ISRC) in the Derry/Londonderry campus of Ulster University, Northern Ireland. The School runs from August 26th to 30th 2024 in hybrid mode with both in-person and online attendees. There have been rapid advancements and investments in research and development in brain sciences, neurotechnology, neural data modelling and neuro-inspired artificial intelligence (AI). The Computational Neuroscience, Neurotechnology and Neuro-inspired AI (CN3) Summer School aims to train the next generation of researchers on these state-of-the-art developments.
