Two postdoc positions are available at RIKEN Center for Brain Science, Japan, to work with Taro Toyoizumi on Computational/Theoretical Neuroscience. Our research is within the field of Computational Neuroscience. We utilize computer models to explore how information is processed in the brain and how the brain circuits adapt to the environment. Drawing on analytical techniques from statistical physics and information theory, we probe the key functional properties of neural circuits. We apply these techniques to distill diverse experimental findings into a few core concepts. We hold a particular interest in activity-dependent forms of plasticity in the brain, which exert significant influences on learning, memory, and development. Leveraging mathematical models, we aim to formulate a theory that bridges cellular-level plasticity rules and computation. The capacity of neurons to represent and retain information is gauged from the structure and behavior of resulting circuits. (Call for Papers & Deadline Extension) NeuroDesign in Human-Robot Interaction: The Making of Engaging HRI Technology Your Brain Can’t Resist We are pleased to announce a call for papers and the extension of the deadline for the special issue - “NeuroDesign in Human-Robot Interaction: The making of engaging HRI technology your brain can’t resist”. This special issue will be published in the research topic of the journal - Frontiers in Robotics and AI and Frontiers in Neurorobotics. In this special issue, we will discuss the fascinating Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) research with the interfacing of applied neuroscience, psychology and design methodologies. Scope of submissions: The complex tapestry of human biology, consciousness, and cognition presents a unique challenge for technology designed to interact with us. This complexity demands a multidisciplinary approach that leverages insights from neuroscience, behavioral psychology, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence to address the barriers that currently hinder natural and effective human-robot interaction. Hi, Could you distribute this announcement to your students? Thanks a lot! We are seeking 3 master's students to systematically evaluate Virtual Epilepsy Patients (VEP). The VEP workflow employs computational models and machine learning techniques to estimate epileptogenic networks and assist in surgical strategies. In this context, the computational models are personalized whole-brain network models based on the patient's recorded data. VEP represents the first well-established instance of applying the concept of virtual brain twins in a clinical trial, called Epinov. Our team is a world leader in advancing the concept of virtual brain twins. Three topics: 1. Systematic investigation of the sensitivity of the VEP in terms of electrode locations. 2. Systematic investigation of the robustness of the VEP in terms of data features. 3. Systematic investigation of the robustness of the VEP in terms of the size of the windows of seizure analysis. About the ideal candidates: * A strong grasp of mathematics, physics, neuroscience, and computer science, or a genuine enthusiasm for cultivating these skills, is essential. * The ability to quickly acquire proficiency in new computational tools is important, and we will offer comprehensive guidance to support your learning. * Proficiency in coding is a fundamental skill. * Ideally, you are a Master 2 student and would like to complete your 6-month internship in our laboratory. * An added advantage would be a strong motivation to pursue a career in scientific research and aspire to become a Ph.D. candidate. NEXTEN: Envisaging Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience for the next 10 years May 16-17, 2024 Washington University in St Louis nexten.wustl.edu Theoretical/Computational Neuroscience is currently undergoing a phase of unprecedented growth. Dramatic advances in the ease with which large-scale datasets of behavior, neural activity, connectomic and gene expression information can be collected have coincided with a revolution in the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence-based algorithms to interrogate such datasets. Concurrently, these new datasets are inspiring exciting new developments in mathematical tools for extracting their underlying structure and relationships. What is the current state of the art in our theoretical/computational understanding of the brain, and what does the future hold? You are invited to join an exciting line-up of leaders in the field to address these questions. Dear colleagues, I am currently looking for an enthusiastic researcher to join a highly interdisciplinary team investigating „Dynamic Auditory Predictions in Human and Non-human Primates (Dynamates <https://www.oeaw.ac.at/en/ari/dynamates>)". The project rests on a strong collaboration between cognitive neuroscience, cognitive biology, and computational modeling. The candidate’s main task will be to perform cutting-edge model-based analyses of neurobehavioural data (psychophysics + EEG + eyetracking) that we already collected. The McDougal lab at Yale University seeks one or two highly motivated Postdoctoral Associates to advance the frontiers of neuroscience simulation. In addition to papers, etc, this work will be shared with the community in the form of enhancements to the NEURON<https://nrn.readthedocs.io/> simulator. Related lab projects include: combining machine learning and mechanistic modeling, multisimulation (interoperation with other tools), high-resolution simulations of subcellular chemical dynamics, and algorithm development (GPUs, initialization, performance enhancements). The Postdoctoral Associate will lead one or more of these projects and will present this work at conferences, in publications, and in the form of open-source software. Mentorship and career development opportunities will be tailored to the Postdoctoral Associate’s interests. Applicants should hold or be about to complete a PhD in a quantitative field (e.g., mathematics, computer science), neuroscience, or a related field. Strong programming skills in Python and C++ are essential, as is scientific excellence as demonstrated through publication history. Experience with the NEURON<https://nrn.readthedocs.io/> simulator, in machine learning, numerical methods, and/or GPU computing is desirable, but not required. *Flatiron Research Fellow (Postdoctoral Fellow), NeuroAI and Geometric Data Analysis* *Description* Applications are invited for Flatiron Research Fellowships (FRF) in the NeuroAI and Geometric Data Analysis Group (SueYeon Chung, PI) at the Center for Computational Neuroscience at the Flatiron Institute of the Simons Foundation, whose focus is on understanding computation in the brain and artificial neural networks by: (1) analyzing geometries underlying neural or feature representations, embedding and transferring information, and (2) developing neural network models and learning rules guided by neuroscience. To do this, the group utilizes analytical methods from statistical physics, machine learning theory, and high-dimensional statistics and geometry.The CCN FRF program offers the opportunity for postdoctoral research in areas that have strong synergy with one or more of the existing research groups at CCN or other centers at the Flatiron Institute. In addition to carrying out an independent research program, Flatiron Research Fellows are expected to: disseminate their results through scientific presentations, publications, and software release, collaborate with other members of the CCN or Flatiron Institute, and participate in the scientific life of the CCN and Flatiron Institute by attending seminars, colloquia, and group meetings. Flatiron Research Fellows may have the opportunity to organize workshops and to mentor graduate and undergraduate students. In our research, we seek to uncover the principles of how the brain performs computations related to sensory perception, decision making, and motor control. The Bazhenov Lab at the University of California, San Diego, is currently seeking to fill a postdoctoral position to study the role of sleep in memory, learning, and forgetting. This exciting project involves close collaboration with experimental labs. The ultimate goal of the work is to advance our understanding of how the human and animal brain learns from experience and how sleep contributes to memory consolidation for recent learning. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing anatomically realistic biophysical brain network models based on experimental data. These models will be instrumental in uncovering network dynamics involved in memory consolidation, reconsolidation and forgetting during sleep, as well as guiding data analysis and generating innovative experimental predictions. Additionally, depending on the candidate's interests and experience, there may be opportunities to participate in other related lab projects. These projects include developing whole human brain model based on Human Connectome Project (HCP) data and mouse brain model based on the Allen Mouse Brain Connectivity Atlas. Other projects involve applying principles learned from neuroscience to artificial intelligence, focusing on areas such as continuous learning, knowledge generalization, and adaptation to novel situations and contexts. An ideal candidate should have a background in computational/theoretical neuroscience and neural modeling. Programming experience with C/C++ is required, and knowledge of Python and PyTorch is a significant plus. Postdoctoral position in Human Psychophysics for understanding vision with/without Neuroimaging (m/f/d) (TVöD Bund E13, 100%) The Department of Sensory and Sensorimotor Systems (PI Prof. Li Zhaoping) at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics and at the University of Tübingen is currently looking for highly skilled and motivated individuals to work on projects aimed towards understanding visual attentional and perceptual processes using fMRI/MRI, TMS, EEG/MEG, and other relevant methodologies. A postdoctoral position in “Multiphysics Brain Aging Modeling” is available in the group of Prof. Johannes Weickenmeier at Stevens Institute of Technology right outside New York City (www.weickenmeierlab.com<http://www.weickenmeierlab.com/>). The Soft Matter Biomechanics Lab combines experimental methods to biomechanically characterize brain tissue properties and various computational modeling techniques (e.g. finite element analysis, multiphysics modeling, medical image analysis) with the ultimate goal to better understand healthy brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Our constitutive aging and Alzheimer’s disease models couple neurobiology and mechanics (i.e. morphological shape changes and tissue loading) in order to identify abnormal aging patterns and brain regions at risk of developing secondary damage, such as white matter hyperintensities, hypoperfusion, traumatic injury, and vascular degeneration. We validate our models against longitudinal imaging data from databases such as the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). We are looking for applications with prior experience in advanced medical image analysis, data analysis, and modeling. Knowledge in the biology of aging is a significant advantage. The research will be performed at the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology right outside of New York. The position is funded through a grant from the NIH. The position is available immediately. A Brainwide Map of mouse brain neural activity during decision-making was released by the International Brain Laboratory ( https://internationalbrainlab.org) and we want you to use it to test your own hypotheses! At the Society for Neuroscience meeting this year, we will host a workshop for anyone interested in learning to use the data. During this tutorial we will teach you to search and download datasets, do basic analyses, and give tips for more advanced computation. postdoc at SISSA: How come my tongue got stuck?

New research in our limbo group (Ryom and Treves, Phys Rev X Life, 2023, and unpublished) and extensive data on language parameters collected by Longobardi and collaborators (Ceolin et al, Phil Trans Roy Soc B, 2021) suggest that language diversity may reflect the disordered freezing dynamics that in a spin glass leads to a multiplicity of ground states. In a simplified model, vectors of binary syntactic parameters interact via strong asymmetric logical implications and weak partly symmetric influences, which can produce critical slowing down through a novel mechanism of percolated freezing.
