Pieter Roelfsema A postdoc or PhD-student position is available in the Vision & Cognition group at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience in Amsterdam. The aim is to understand visual perception and plasticity elicited by electrical stimulation of the visual cortex in mice, with the ultimate aim to create a visual cortical prosthesis to restore a rudimentary form of vision for the blind. Project description: Visual perception elicited by electrical stimulation of mouse visual cortex Electrical stimulation of the visual cortex elicits a “phosphene”, an artificial percept of light. By stimulating multiple electrodes at the same time, it might prove possible evoke pattern vision. The aims of this project are to (1) develop new methods for electrical stimulation in mice; (2) to study the patterns of activated neurons using two-photon imaging and (3) to test visual perception of electrical percepts and its plasticity in mice. Qualifications We will consider highly motivated, self-driven candidates with a degree in neuroscience, (neuro)psychology, biomedical sciences, natural sciences, material science, mathematics, physics, etc. A high level of written and spoken English and good programming skills are required. The ideal candidate will have experience with neurophysiological techniques, the analysis of neuronal activity in alert animals, and a background in neuroscience. Interest in the translation of fundamental research into clinical applications and collaboration with high-tech companies is a plus. The project will extend and study algorithms for interactive machine learning (using Deep RL) to include language instructions as one of the ways that the system can learn, that is, by using the invariant structure of the human verbal description to organize procedural representations. The PhD position is part of the ERC project RobSpear: “Robust Speech Encoding in Impaired Hearing” that takes an interdisciplinary approach (combining auditory models with EEG, psychoacoustics and machine-learning) to study sound processing in listeners with impaired hearing. You will be part of an international team of researchers with different backgrounds to develop signal-processing strategies for hearing aids of the future. Aside from signal-processing, behavioral sound perception and/or EEG experiments with normal and hearing-impaired listeners is expected as part of this project. The Hearing Technology lab of Prof. Verhulst offers an international research environment and access to world-class research facilities (waves.intec.ugent.be/hearing-technology and gasp.ugent.be). Funding is available for 4 years provided positive intermediate evaluations. Applicants should hold an academic university degree (Masters or equivalent) in Engineering (Electrical, Acoustical, Biomedical), (Engineering) Physics, Mathematics, Informatics. The 2nd International Neural Dynamics Summer School 2018 Experience experimental and computational neuroscience research 05/09/2018 –07/09/2018 Bristol University, UK We are offering twelve fully funded positions on the Wellcome Trust sponsored summer school for training and research experience in neural dynamics (TRENDs). The training and research in neural dynamics summer school is an exciting Wellcome Trust funded course held at the University of Bristol. The aim is to introduce young scientists to experimental and computational techniques used in neuroscience research. The summer school will be a three-day course made up of a series of seminars and lab visits where successful candidates will get first hand experience of electrophysiological recordings (bothin vitro and in vivo), EEG recordings, brain imaging, optogenetics, data analysis workshops and practical classes on learning to code in Python. No prior experience is necessary, but a keen interest is essential! We welcome applications from science undergraduates from a wide range of backgrounds. Dear colleagues, we are pleased to announce the 8th International Summer School in Biomedical Engineering „Multimodal integration of brain measurements in research and clinical practice“, 1st – 12th October 2018 in Chengdu, China. This event stands in the tradition of a series of successful summer schools on hot themes in biomedical engineering, dedicated to intense learning in the fruitful atmosphere of tight interaction between students and world-leading specialists. This year’s summer school is devoted to EEG/MEG source reconstruction technologies in the frame work of multimodal integration of brain measurements in research and clinical practice. In particular, the 8th International Summer School on Biomedical Engineering will focus on methodological approaches and challenges, measurement devices and characteristics, types of underlying theoretic modeling, specifics of data analysis, ability to derive conclusions about neuroscientific meaning. Neuroplasticity: From Bench to Machine Learning 13 July 2018 - 14 July 2018 The Surrey Sleep Research Centre, the Department of Computer Science, and the Institute of Advance Studies at the University of Surrey are pleased to announce a call for participation in and contributions to a two-day workshop where researchers can share and discuss the current advances in neuroplasticity and machine learning and their mutual inspiration. On one hand, Neuroscience keeps discovering new mechanisms involved in neural plasticity and its modulation, which involves the so-called “third factors” (e.g. dendritic computations, glia, neurotransmitters) and dynamics of neural networks (e.g. oscillations). However the functional and computational interpretation of these phenomena and their utilisation in machine learning remains to be explored. On the other hand, the advent of “deep networks” in machine learning has allowed us to model artificial neural networks that perform highly complex tasks (e.g. chess, go, image classification). But to date, none of these modeling approaches competes with general human or animal intelligence in terms of cost-effectiveness or domain-transferability. The main goal of this workshop will be to discuss the missing links between neural-level phenomena and their computational function on behavioural or technical level. This meeting will bring together international and national leaders in the fields of synaptic function and plasticity, network dynamic, computational neuroscience and machine learning and will offer a unique platform to establish new interdisciplinary collaborations.
