Cosyne Workshop: 100 years of spikes – but why?

Dear participants of the Cosyne conference, we are excited to announce our workshop on March 17 in Cascais, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Lord Adrian's publication of the first clear evidence of what is now known as action potential in the nervous system. While there is no doubt that they exist, their role in metabolism, representation of information and computation is still unclear. What is their unique functional role? Under what conditions is a discrete presentation of information optimal? Are spikes even advantageous for the design of artificial neural networks? Or are they rather evolutionary quick fixes? With electrophysiological and morphological data of unprecedented quality we are now in the position to newly address these decades-old questions. We invite you to discuss them with our speakers, who will touch upon them from perspectives ranging from biology to neuromorphic computing. Dear colleagues, The *Bernstein Network Computational Neuroscience invites nominations for the* *Valentin Braitenberg Award for Computational Neuroscience 2026.* The Valentin Braitenberg Award honors outstanding scientific achievements in the field of computational neuroscience. Following Braitenberg's scientific tradition, special attention is paid to theoretical studies that reveal the functional significance of brain structures and their neuronal network dynamics. In 2026, Valentin Braitenberg would have celebrated his 100th birthday. To commemorate this special occasion, the Bernstein Network will present the next Valentin Braitenberg Award during the Bernstein Conference 2026. We use machine learning techniques for neural data analysis and computational modelling with a special interest in biologically-inspired deep learning and AI models (NeuroAI). The computational models we work with include vision deep learning models (including topographical, recurrent, or developmentally inspired models), multimodal vision and language models, and Large Language Models. The Center for Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience (ctcn.wustl.edu) at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications from postdocs and senior graduate students, who are using primarily theoretical and computational techniques to study the principles of brain organization and function, for its third Computational Neuroscience Next Generation symposium, September 14-15th 2026: https://ctcn.wustl.edu/2026-next-gen-symposium The CTCN will pay travel expenses for successful applicants. Participants will engage with researchers at CTCN-participating departments over two days, including: - Presenting their work during the symposium, which will also feature leading WashU neuroscientists. - One-on-one meetings with faculty. - Informal discussions with the Washington University computational and theoretical neuroscience community.
