Dear Scientists, The Göttingen Campus Institute for Dynamics of Biological Networks (CIDBN)<https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/608362.html> invites applications for a position of Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Biophysics (all genders welcome) The position will be full-time (currently 39,8 hours/week), German pay grade 13 TV-L, starting as soon as possible. The CIDBN Department "Physics of Biological Systems", headed by Prof. Fred Wolf, offers a fixed-term contract until June 30, 2025 with the perspective of an extension commensurate with building a competitive track record at the frontier of computational biophysics and neural circuit theory. Information is processed in brain circuits through the coordinated action of large-scale circuits of neurons and synapses. Ultimately, it is the nano-scale molecular architecture of neuronal synapses that can make or break the power of neural circuit computation. Progress in a broad suite of nanoscopy techniques is currently uncovering the molecular-level design of synapses subserving functions such as working memory or sensory coding. The spatio-temporal operation of these nano-machines and the efficiency of their design, however, remain to be understood and are core research aims of the Göttingen Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1286 "Quantitative Synaptology"<https://www.sfb1286.de/?lang=en>. We are inviting applications from theoretical biophysicists, molecular systems biologists, or computational scientists with an ambition to pioneer computational studies of synaptic functional design. We offer a stimulating environment of theoretical neuroscientists, neural data-scientists, and cutting-edge experimentalists associated with CRC 1286. In addition, the institute provides dedicated support for high-performance computing. We are dedicated to supporting the growth of original research personalities at the frontier of computational science and neural circuit theory. The successful applicant will hold an excellent PhD in physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or equivalent, and have a strong interest in high-performance computing in neuroscience or cellular systems biology. We expect excellent analytical and coding skills, interest in working in a transdisciplinary team as well as excellence in scientific writing and reasoning. Experience in non-equilibrium statistical physics, stochastic dynamics, membrane biophysics, ion-channel and biochemical kinetics, buffered Ca-diffusion, and Ca-exocytosis coupling would be advantageous. Two Tenure-Track Assistant Professorships at Bocconi University

The Department of Computing Sciences at Bocconi University invites applications for two Tenure Track Assistant Professor positions. The new department of Computing Sciences, created three years ago and in a phase of rapid expansion, is an interdisciplinary department with leading international researchers in various fields including theoretical computer science, machine learning theory, statistical physics modeling, natural language processing, computational neuroscience, as well as biomedical applications. In terms of teaching, the department has recently opened a bachelor in AI, a master in AI, and is strongly involved in the PhD program in Statistics and Computer Science. It has a strong core in theory and applied CS, and aims at broadening its portfolio, in particular towards applications of machine learning not yet currently represented. We are looking for outstanding candidates, curious and open to collaborations with colleagues from other fields. Priority will be given to candidates with expertise in computer vision and/or high performance computing as well as to all candidates whose hiring would increase the diversity of the faculty in the department. However, recent experimental and theoretical results have challenged this view, leading to the hypothesis that memories are encoded in assemblies containing both excitatory (E) and inhibitory (I) neurons. Understanding the effects of these E-I assemblies on memory function is therefore essential. Using a biologically constrained model of an olfactory memory network, I will first describe how introducing E-I assemblies reorganizes odor-evoked activity patterns in neural state space. Indeed, the “geometry” of neural activity provides valuable insights about the computational properties of neural networks. I will then describe the behavior of networks with E-I assemblies upon partial manipulation of inhibitory neurons. Phd position in decision making

We are looking for a talented and motivated PhD student to study behavioral and computation models of evidence accumulation during sequential decision-making. The student will work in the Functional System Dynamics (FunSy) team at University of Strasbourg with Dr. Jyotika Bahuguna (computational neuroscience, basal ganglia modeling), in collaboration with Dr. Sebastien Ballesta (non-human primate neuroethology) and Dr. Demian Battaglia (network and information science). The project will focus on the analysis and modelling of behavioral data from non-human primates in naturalistic environments collected in the local Silabe primate center ( https://www.silabe.com/en/research/a-platform-for-ethology-and-cognitive-ne…) a unique facility in which non-human primates of several species freely interact and engage in self motivated decision making tasks without any experimenter’s intervention via fully automated modules located within the ruins of a fortress. The research project will involve modeling value modulation, choice bias and reward optimization strategies in the context of sequential choices and evidence accumulation models. In addition, the interested student will also have the opportunity of engaging in parallel projects about the role cortico-basal-ganglia-thalamic circuit during sequential choices, by profiting of an ongoing collaboration between Dr. Bahuguna and the exploratory intelligence group (Timothy Verstynen, Jonathan Rubin, Eric Yttri) in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. The Phd student will join LNCA (Laboratoire des Neurosciences Cognitive et Adaptive) and specifically the FunSy team (Functional System Dynamics group - https://funsyteam.org/) offering a rich scientific environment working on neural recordings with state-of-the-art experimental techniques (Dr. Romain. Goutagny) with sophisticated analytical tools including machine-learning, information theory, network science and computational modeling (Dr. Jyotika Bahuguna, Dr. Demian Battaglia) relevant to behavior, memory, attention, decision making and sensorimotor coordination functions. The University of Strasbourg is one of the top universities in France and is home to a rich neuroscience community.
