Postdoc position in sleep modeling/analysis

POSTDOC POSITION IN MODELING/ANALYSIS FOR UNDERSTANDING SLEEP OVERVIEW. An NIH-funded collaboration between David Prober (Caltech), Thai Truong (USC) and Geoff Goodhill (Washington University in St Louis) aims to gain new insight into the neural circuits underlying sleep, through a combination of whole-brain neural recordings in zebrafish and theoretical/computational modeling. A postdoc position is available in the Goodhill lab to contribute to the modeling and computational analysis components. PROJECT DETAILS. Using novel 2-photon imaging technologies Prober and Truong are recording from the entire larval zebrafish brain at single-neuron resolution continuously for long periods of time, examining neural circuit activity during normal day-night cycles and in response to genetic and pharmacological perturbations. The Goodhill lab is analyzing the resulting huge datasets using a variety of sophisticated computational approaches, and using these results to build new theoretical models that reveal how neural circuits interact to govern sleep. APPLICANT PROFILE. Applicants should have a strong background in mathematics/theory/computation applied to biological problems. Experience in analyzing sleep processes is desirable but not required. LAB ENVIRONMENT. The Goodhill lab is an interdisciplinary environment of students and postdocs from a diverse array of backgrounds including neuroscience, mathematics, physics and engineering, working together on understanding neural circuit computation, particularly relating to neural development. The lab both performs its own behavioral and neural imaging experiments with larval zebrafish, and collaborates on the analysis of data generated elsewhere. UNIVERSITY ENVIRONMENT. The lab will use diverse tools from computational neuroscience to study how neuronal diversity drives physiologically relevant brain function in neuronal circuits, and how disruptions to this diversity might contribute to various neuropathologies. Workshop proposal submission deadline: 10 November 2023 Abstract submission deadline: 19 November 2023 ---------------------------------------------------- COSYNE MEETING & WORKSHOPS ---------------------------------------------------- The annual Cosyne meeting provides an inclusive forum for the exchange of empirical and theoretical approaches to problems in systems neuroscience, in order to understand how neural systems function. The MAIN MEETING is single-track. A set of invited talks is selected by the Executive Committee, and additional talks and posters are selected by the Program Committee, based on submitted abstracts. The WORKSHOPS feature in-depth discussion of current topics of interest, in a small group setting. All abstract submissions will be reviewed double blind. The deadline for Abstract submission will be 19 November 2023. Cosyne topics include but are not limited to: neural basis of behavior, sensory and motor systems, circuitry, learning, neural coding, natural scene statistics, dendritic computation, neural basis of persistent activity, nonlinear receptive field mapping, representations of time and sequence, reward systems, decision-making, synaptic plasticity, map formation and plasticity, population coding, attention, neuromodulation, and computation with spiking networks. We would like to foster increased participation from experimental groups as well as computational ones. Please circulate widely and encourage your students and postdocs to apply. When preparing an abstract, authors should be aware that not all abstracts can be accepted for the meeting. The goal is to provide an informal forum for the discussion of important research questions and challenges. The overarching goal of all workshops should be the integration of empirical and theoretical approaches, in an environment that fosters collegial discussion and debate. - There will be 6-10 workshops/day, running in parallel. - Each workshop is expected to draw between 15 and 80 people. - The workshops will be split into morning and late afternoon sessions. - Workshops will be held in Cascais, Portugal. - Workshop speakers do NOT receive free registration, travel expenses, or accommodation for either the main meeting or the workshop sessions. Organizers should let invited speakers know that they are expected to pay for workshop registration fees. Workshop organizer responsibilities include coordinating workshop participation and content, scheduling all speakers, submitting a final schedule for the workshop program, and moderating the discussion. Dear Colleagues, A Scientist position is open at the Allen Institute in the area of biologically realistic modeling. Please see the job description here: https://alleninstitute.hrmdirect.com/employment/job-opening.php?req=2773735 The Scientist will participate in our efforts to develop bio-realistic simulations at multiple levels: from neurons, to brain areas, to whole brains. These efforts leverage our multimodal datasets on the composition, connectivity, and in vivo activity of the mouse brain. The goal is to study the cell type and circuit mechanisms of brain computations and dynamics. Please consider applying and reach out if you have any questions.
