The Machine Learning Lab at the University of Oldenburg, Germany, is seeking to fill two positions for doctoral researchers Our Machine Learning Lab conducts mathematically grounded research on novel approaches in Machine Learning with a focus on probabilistic generative approaches including deep generative models. Examples are deep variational autoencoders, deep mixture models, and Bayesian networks. Our research projects are conducted in collaboration with leading international labs, and we publish in leading international journals and present on leading conferences. Our interests are in understanding methods and in developing novel approaches to solve difficult problems in Machine Learning. We are interested in problems with strong data corruptions, strong noise and in problems with few data or few labels. Furthermore, we are in general interested in the development of novel approaches that significantly improve learning efficiency (with applications to Big Data). At the same time, we model neural information processing using Machine Learning models in order to understand the nature of biological intelligence. The two positions will both allow for basic research, and they will both allow for applications to data for tasks such as data enhancement (denoising, inpainting, deblurring), unsupervised and semi-supervised learning, super-resolution, outlier detection etc. Part of one position has a focus on addressing such tasks for medical data. Ideal candidates have a strong background in a theoretical subject and/or a high interest in further advancing Machine Learning methods such as variational optimization. Example degrees that qualify for the positions are degrees in Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, in the Data Sciences or degrees of related disciplines. Strong programming skills are a big plus. Candidates have to hold a MSc degree or have to be sufficiently close to obtaining one. Early concepts about episodic memory were based on the storage model, according to which experiential content is preserved in memory and later retrieved. However, overwhelming empirical evidence suggests that the content of episodic memory is – at least to a certain degree – constructed in the act of remembering. Even though very few contemporary researchers would oppose this view of episodic memory as a generative process, it has not become the standard paradigm of empirical memory research. This is particularly true for studies of the neural correlates of episodic memory. Further hindering progress are large conceptual differences regarding episodic memory across different fields, such as neuroscience, philosophy, and psychology. This interdisciplinary workshop therefore aims to bring together researchers from all relevant fields to advance the state of the art in the research on generative episodic memory. FOR 2812 “Constructing scenarios of the past: A new framework in episodic memory” consists of 9 researchers. Seven from the Ruhr University Bochum and two from the University of Münster. PhD Position at the Brain Circuits and Behavior Lab, IDIBAPS, Barcelona

We are offering a PhD position in the Brain Circuits and Behavior Lab (IDIBAPS, Barcelona) to participate, under the supervision of Jaime de la Rocha, in the ERA-NET project titled A neurocomputational biomarker assay for schizophrenia based on E/I-balance. The project aims to perform perceptual discrimination experiments in mice lacking the GluN1 subunit of NMDA receptors in PV cells, a known murine model for schizophrenia (SCZ). High-throughput behavioral experiments will be combined with neural population recordings and optogenetic manipulations to elucidate the relation between NMDA hypofunction, altered E/I balance in cortical circuits and perceptual discrimination deficits. The candidate will be part of the Brain Circuits and Behavior Lab in IDIBAPS (Barcelona) an interdisciplinary group led by Albert Compte and Jaime de la Rocha, which integrates students from different backgrounds and combines human and animal experiments with computational modeling to address questions related with perceptual decision making, learning and working memory (see braincircuitsbehavior.org<http://braincircuitsbehavior.org/>). IDIBAPS is a well-recognized biomedical research institute in Spain, located in the heart of Barcelona (www.clinicbarcelona.org/en/idibaps<http://www.clinicbarcelona.org/en/idibaps>). Our group is also an active member of the BARCCSYN community, a large and lively network of Systems and Computational Neuroscience Groups in Barcelona which offers a rich and stimulating environment for international students and postdocs (see barccsyn.org<http://barccsyn.org/>). The PhD project will take place in the context of a broader ERA-NET consortium formed by Philpp Sterzer (Charité), Tobias Donner (Univ. Hamburg UKE), Peter Uhlhaas (Univ. of Glasgow) and Srdjan Ostojic (Ecole Normale Supérieure). The goal of the full project is to use theoretical circuit models, human EEG/MEG experiments in SCZ patients and population recordings in mice to identify behavioral and neurophysiological biomarkers of SCZ. The candidate should have completed two degrees: a bachelor degree in either Biology, Psychology, Physics or Computer Science (or related), and a Masters in Neuroscience (or similar). She/he should have a strong interest in carrying out animal experiments, learning modern electrophysiology methods together with state-of-the-art quantitative data analysis techniques. Postdoc position in computational neuroscience at University of Pittsburgh

The Huang group at the University of Pittsburgh has a postdoc position available immediately for computational modeling to understand how recurrent connections with synaptic plasticity shape the time scales in the auditory cortex. This position is part of a collaboration with Prof. Tobias Teichert and Prof. Dean Salisbury from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. This project aims to use a combination of modeling, electrophysiology and EEG recordings to investigate the circuit mechanisms underlying auditory refractoriness, as well as auditory dysfunction in Schizophrenia. In general, our group is interested in how different task and stimulus contexts change neuronal responses and the implications on neural coding. Other ongoing projects in the group include circuit models of interneuron subtypes and attentional modulation on information flow. The position is funded for two years, with an initial one-year appointment, and it can be possibly extended to three years. The project is funded by a Brain Initiative grant. Dear all, We have two PhD positions in computational neuroscience available at the Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Group at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences, University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands). Both positions are funded by the Human Brain Project (HBP-SGA3) and will be co-supervised by Cyriel Pennartz, head of the Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Group, and Jorge Mejias, Principal Investigator of Computational Neuroscience. Position #1: The main objective of this PhD project is to develop a large, biologically plausible model of a cortical architecture that is trained for predictive object and scene representations and performs cognitive operations on these representations, such as scene segmentation, object categorization and object constancy in the face of variable sensory input. The candidate will closely collaborate with other computational neuroscientists, experimental neuroscientists, theoreticians and machine learning experts across different research teams in Europe. For this position, we are seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate with a Master's degree in computational neuroscience or closely related field with a strong background in modeling neural networks or, alternatively, a MSc in machine learning/AI or biomedical, electronic or automation engineering, computer science, physics or a closely related field with a clear background or affinity for brain-inspired modeling. Strong programming skills in Python and experience in machine learning and (deep) neural network modeling is desirable. English is the official language of the lab, therefore good English communication skills are expected. Position #2: The main objective of this PhD project is to develop a biologically realistic computational model of multi-area cortical circuits involved in multisensory perception, categorization and sensory prediction. We will build a model constrained by state-of-the-art neuroanatomical data, which will include biologically relevant information such as cortical laminar structure, multiple cell types, and biologically realistic learning rules for synaptic plasticity. The model will be able categorize stimuli in simple multisensory tasks and will provide computational predictions on neural activity which we will compare to experimental data from collaborators. The candidate will also closely collaborate with other computational neuroscientists, experimental neuroscientists, theoreticians and machine learning experts across different research teams in Europe. For this position, we are seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate with a Master's degree in computational neuroscience or closely related field (with a focus on modeling biological neural systems) or, alternatively, an MSc in physics, mathematics or a closely related field and a clear background or affinity for brain modeling. Strong mathematical skills including calculus, linear algebra, dynamical systems and complex systems, as well as strong computational skills (Python, NEST) are desirable. English is the official language of the lab, therefore good English communication skills are expected. For both positions, we offer a full-time appointment for a maximum period of four years (18 months plus a further 30 months after a positive performance evaluation) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance to courses and (international) meetings. The gross monthly salary will range from €2,395 in the first year to €3,061 in the final year, according to the Dutch salary scale for PhD candidates. Additional benefits include a holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus (8% and 8.3% of the gross annual salary, respectively) and generous vacation, pension and social security conditions in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities. With the launch of a new ‘NCCR Evolving Language’ (http://www.snf.ch/SiteCollectionDocuments/nfs/Faktenblatt_NCCR_evolvinglang…) which involves nearly 40 different research groups from a large variety of disciplines across Switzerland, we seek to fill a PhD position for a four-year project, starting in September or October 2020. Our goal is to make progress in understanding language giftedness from cognitive, psychological and neural perspectives. To this end, we plan to carry out a set of studies involving acquisition of both behavioral measures of cognitive and language-related abilities (e.g. auditory/perceptual abilities, phonemic perception and production, inductive learning, working memory etc) and of brain imaging measures (fMRI and sMRI). The project will be supervised by Narly Golestani (University of Geneva) and Raphael Berthele (University of Fribourg), and will be done in collaboration with a postdoctoral fellow. Data will be collected with Francophone (mono- and multilingual) subjects. Applicants should hold have a background in cognitive neuroscience or psychology, with solid experience in brain functional neuroimaging (ideally fMRI), behavioral testing and strong statistics skills. Positions for Postdoctoral Researchers The Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center for Neuromathematics (NeuroMat), hosted by the University of São Paulo, Brazil, and funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), is offering *three post-doctoral fellowships* for recent PhDs with outstanding research potential. The research will involve collaborations with experimental and theoretical groups and laboratories associated to NeuroMat. The research to be developed by the post-doc fellows shall be strictly related to ongoing research lines developed by the NeuroMat team. The project may be developed at USP (main campus, São Paulo), USP campus Ribeirão Preto or University of Campinas (UNICAMP). We seek candidates capable to develop independent research in one of the research lines below: 1. Stochastic and/or computational modeling of the brain functioning; 2. Acquisition, processing and quantitative analysis of electrophysiological data; 3. Biomedical devices for neuroscience research. Candidates to the first research line are required to have at least one of the profiles below: - A strong background in probability theory with emphasis on stochastic processes. Previous knowledge of rigorous statistical mechanics or random graphs will be favorably considered; and/or - A strong mathematical and / or computational background and experience with computers and programming. Previous experience with development and / or simulation of neural brain models, complex networks and parallel computing will be favorably considered. Candidates to the second research line are required to have at least one of the profiles below: - A strong background in neuroscience with previous experience in neurophysiological data acquisition, processing and analysis, and knowledge of computer programming; and/or - A strong background in computer science with experience in the development of algorithms, software tools and data bases. The Malerba Lab at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute Battelle Center for Mathematical Medicine in Columbus, Ohio is looking for a new Research Associate. The lab focuses on brain rhythms, especially during sleep, and their role in cognition (memory and motor skills). We are looking for a detail-oriented, adaptable and curious mind, who has graduate-level training and at least one year of experience working in a research lab. The position (initially for one year, with possible extension tied to lab funding) will be centered on high-level quantitative EEG analysis and simulations of neural network dynamics related to ongoing research projects. Demonstrated proficiency in programming (Matlab and python) is required, and so is interest in how brain dynamics is tied to behavior. Some neuroscience training is desirable. A small part of the position will be to screen and coordinate research subjects for participation to ongoing studies, hence timeliness and people skills are necessary. The Research Institute at NCH is a collaborative interdisciplinary environment, that strives to apply the most modern knowledge to challenging questions with high impact. *Postdoc and PhD positions in EU project on motor control and movement augmentation* Bernstein Center, University of Freiburg NEXT lab, Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma Department of Bioengineering, Imperial College London Multiple postdoc and PhD positions are available in the labs of Carsten Mehring (University of Freiburg), Domenico Formica and Giovanni di Pino (Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma) as well as Dario Farina and Etienne Burdet (Imperial College London), on motor control and movement augmentation, in the context of the EU project NIMA. The NIMA project aims to develop body, muscle and neural interfaces for controlling additional degrees-of-freedom of supernumerary limbs, devices or computers independently from movements of the natural limbs. We have formed a team of leading experts in neuroscience, neurotechnology, human-machine interfaces, robotics, and ethics from various institutions across Europe (University of Freiburg, Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, Sorbonne Université, Tecnalia Foundation, Imperial College London) to accomplish the following objectives: 1) Pushing the borders of technology by creating non-invasive interfaces with multimodal sensory feedback that will allow effortless control of multiple limbs or objects; 2) Understanding the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying movement augmentation, how it can be functionally embodied and how this can be facilitated by multimodal feedback, by combining neuromodulation, computational modelling and behavioural experiments; 3) Applying movement augmentation to extend human capacities and preparing the ground for exploitation, using different testbeds; 4) Evaluating the ethical and safety aspects of movement augmentation. The application deadline is 23.09.2020. The candidate for the tenure track position should have a strong focus on the translational and integrative potential of human cognitive neuroscience, at the interface of (social) brain, cognition, their disorders, and the microbiome. Research should be building upon a strong conceptual framework and interdisciplinarity. The methodological approach should focus on the interplay between neuro-cognitive processes and neural codes, and their relation to biological regulation systems driven by the microbiome, in humans. Thematically, the focus should be on basic mechanistic research in the domains of (social) emotion and cognition, as well as their disorders, preferentially but not necessarily on topics such as social interaction, affiliation, or learning and memory. The past decade has seen rapid progress in experimental tools that now make it possible to monitor and manipulate brain circuits in unprecedented detail. This evolution presents challenges and opportunities for both experimentalists and theorists, as the complex algorithmics of brain function and the intricate interactions among neurons cannot be approached with experiments alone. Mathematical theory is instrumental in the emergence of theoretical insights and frameworks that can help guide experimental work and identify unifying principles of brain function. The aim of the one-week summer school will be to introduce students with a strong quantitative background (in mathematics, physics, computer science, and engineering) to the emerging field of theoretical and computational neuroscience. The course will bring together leading scientists in the field, who will deliver lectures, take part in small-group discussions, and share their personal experience and views on a range of research topics. The distinguishing feature of CNeuro is the emphasis it places on the role of systematic mathematical theory for understanding the brain, in part by stressing the connections between neuroscience, statistics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. ========== PhD-project in electrophysiology: Closed-loop Transcranial Electric Stimulation of Neural Networks in a Rodent Model of Psychosis Transition. ========== Patients suffering from schizophrenia develop resistance to chemical treatments. Transcranial electrical stimulation (TES), a non-invasive neurophysiological approach, has been shown to alleviate some symptoms, to improve cognitive performances, and to modulate the corticothalamic connectivity. The goal of the project is to optimize a combination of stimulation parameters that make it efficient for the TES against the psychosis transition using predictive electrical biomarkers. In healthy humans and rodents, ketamine reproduces, with a single psychotomimetic dose, the abnormal amplification of corticothalamic gamma-frequency (30-80 Hz) oscillations recorded in individuals having a high-risk mental state for a psychosis transition. Gamma oscillations are naturally involved in cognition, which is also disrupted in at-risk patients. It was demonstrated that the ketamine-induced gamma hyperactivity is prevented by the antipsychotic clozapine. The Ph.D. student will experimentally investigate the TES in the ketamine rodent model of psychosis transition. In an attempt to optimize a combination of stimulation parameters with potential preventive/curative effects, the Ph.D. student will develop and build up a closed-loop feedback system that controls the TES optimally using a Kalman filter. Requested skills: ----------------- The ideal candidate will have a strong background in neuroscience, preferably with experience in in-vivo electrophysiological techniques, mathematical and statistical skills for data analysis (EEG and cellular), and basic knowledge in numerical programming and neural modelling. The successful candidate shall possess a master's degree in physics with specialization in complex systems/nonlinear dynamics and be interested in interdisciplinary research. The project implies cooperation between the Institut of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Potsdam (where the student will be enrolled) and neuroscientists and clinical researchers from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The project aims to develop advanced techniques for neurostimulation used to treat Parkinson's disease. >From the physics viewpoint, the research implies theoretical analysis and modeling of the dynamics of large neuronal populations under external stimulation. Exploiting the hypothesis that the pathological brain rhythms emerge due to excessive synchrony within a neuronal ensemble, we will develop feedback-based techniques to control these rhythms. In cooperation with experimentalists from Charité, we will try to translate these techniques into clinical practice. The project is a part of a large cooperative study funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The past decade has seen rapid progress in experimental tools that now make it possible to monitor and manipulate brain circuits in unprecedented detail. This evolution presents challenges and opportunities for both experimentalists and theorists, as the complex algorithmics of brain function and the intricate interactions among neurons cannot be approached with experiments alone. Mathematical theory is instrumental in the emergence of theoretical insights and frameworks that can help guide experimental work and identify unifying principles of brain function. The aim of the one-week summer school will be to introduce students with a strong quantitative background (in mathematics, theoretical physics, computer science, and engineering) to the emerging field of theoretical and computational neuroscience. The course will bring together leading scientists in the field, who will deliver lectures, take part in small-group discussions, and share their personal experience and views on a range of research topics. Post-doctoral position in software engineering and computational neuroscience at Brown University Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in software engineering and computational neuroscience in the lab of Dr. Stephanie Jones at Brown University. Our group combines human electrophysiological recording, computational neural modeling, and non-invasive brain stimulation techniques to study the mechanisms and meaning of brain dynamics in health and disease. We developed a new neural modeling software tool designed for researchers and clinicians to develop and test predictions on the cell and circuit level origin of human electro- and magneto-encephalography (E/MEG) data. This open-source tool is called Human Neocortical Neurosolver (HNN) and is distributed at https://hnn/brown.edu (Neymotin et al eLife 2020). The hired candidate will help expand HNN’s capabilities, including software development using best-practices in open-source design and community support. The candidate will also work directly with researchers to apply HNN to specific neuroscience questions. Duties will include development of tutorials, online resources, and participation in workshops aimed at training the community in the use and applicability of HNN. The candidate will work with a diverse team of researchers at Brown, Mass General Hospital, and Yale University involved in HNN development. Candidates should have a PhD in computer science, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and/or related field. Strong Python programming skills are required, and experience with neural modeling, particularly NEURON, is preferred. Software developers without a PhD may also be considered. Familiarity with E/MEG analysis methods and/or non-invasive brain stimulation is also beneficial. Candidates should be able to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and fun work environment.
