NEXTEN: Envisaging Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience for the next 10 years May 16-17, 2024 Washington University in St Louis nexten.wustl.edu Theoretical/Computational Neuroscience is currently undergoing a phase of unprecedented growth. Dramatic advances in the ease with which large-scale datasets of behavior, neural activity, connectomic and gene expression information can be collected have coincided with a revolution in the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence-based algorithms to interrogate such datasets. Concurrently, these new datasets are inspiring exciting new developments in mathematical tools for extracting their underlying structure and relationships. What is the current state of the art in our theoretical/computational understanding of the brain, and what does the future hold? You are invited to join an exciting line-up of leaders in the field to address these questions. Confirmed speakers include Adam Kepecs (WashU) Mackenzie Mathis (EPFL) Terry Sejnowski (Salk Institute) Andreas Tolias (Baylor College of Medicine) Richard Zemel (Columbia University) Abstract submissions for posters are encouraged, and some of these will be selected for short talks. Some travel awards will be available for qualified trainees. The conference is sponsored by the Center for Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience at Washington University in St Louis (ctcn.wustl.edu) It will be held in the new 600,000 sq ft Neuroscience Research Building on the WashU Medical School campus, into which ~100 neuroscience labs have recently moved. The deadline for registration and abstract submission is Wednesday, February 28, 2024. However, due to the size of the auditorium total registrations are limited to 150, and so registration may close earlier than Feb 28 if this limit is reached. Housed within the School of Arts & Sciences of the University of Pennsylvania, MindCORE is an interdisciplinary effort to understand human intelligence and behavior. Designed for individuals who have recently obtained a PhD degree in neuroscience, psychology, linguistics, philosophy, computer science, or other cognitive science discipline, the MindCORE Fellowship is a springboard for early researchers as they establish their own research program. Postdoctoral position in computational neuroscience methods (NEURON simulator)

The McDougal lab at Yale University seeks one or two highly motivated Postdoctoral Associates to advance the frontiers of neuroscience simulation. In addition to papers, etc, this work will be shared with the community in the form of enhancements to the NEURON<https://nrn.readthedocs.io/> simulator. Related lab projects include: combining machine learning and mechanistic modeling, multisimulation (interoperation with other tools), high-resolution simulations of subcellular chemical dynamics, and algorithm development (GPUs, initialization, performance enhancements). The Postdoctoral Associate will lead one or more of these projects and will present this work at conferences, in publications, and in the form of open-source software. Mentorship and career development opportunities will be tailored to the Postdoctoral Associate’s interests. Applicants should hold or be about to complete a PhD in a quantitative field (e.g., mathematics, computer science), neuroscience, or a related field. Strong programming skills in Python and C++ are essential, as is scientific excellence as demonstrated through publication history. Experience with the NEURON<https://nrn.readthedocs.io/> simulator, in machine learning, numerical methods, and/or GPU computing is desirable, but not required. The successful candidate will join the McDougal lab (Biostatistics/Health Informatics, Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Wu Tsai Institute, Biomedical Informatics and Data Science). The Bazhenov Lab at the University of California, San Diego, is currently seeking to fill a postdoctoral position to study the role of sleep in memory, learning, and forgetting. This exciting project involves close collaboration with experimental labs. The ultimate goal of the work is to advance our understanding of how the human and animal brain learns from experience and how sleep contributes to memory consolidation for recent learning. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing anatomically realistic biophysical brain network models based on experimental data. These models will be instrumental in uncovering network dynamics involved in memory consolidation, reconsolidation and forgetting during sleep, as well as guiding data analysis and generating innovative experimental predictions. Additionally, depending on the candidate's interests and experience, there may be opportunities to participate in other related lab projects. These projects include developing whole human brain model based on Human Connectome Project (HCP) data and mouse brain model based on the Allen Mouse Brain Connectivity Atlas. Other projects involve applying principles learned from neuroscience to artificial intelligence, focusing on areas such as continuous learning, knowledge generalization, and adaptation to novel situations and contexts. Applicants with the following skills are particularly encouraged to apply: (a) research background in cognitive, systems, or computational neuroscience, (b) expertise in electrophysiology in behaving animals, and/or (c) highly quantitative data analytic skills (possibly including computational modeling). The candidate will carry out high-density multi-areal electrophysiological recordings while animals are engaged in attention-demanding visual tasks. The individual will be required to train animals, generate electrophysiological data, and perform advanced statistical data analyses and modeling in a highly collaborative research environment. This is a multi-year fully funded position. The initial appointment will be for a period of 1 year, with scope for multi-year renewal subject to satisfactory progress. Envigado is in the Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley, close to Medellín, the second-largest city in Colombia, and the capital of the department of Antioquia. Envigado was recognized recently as one of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (UNESCO GNLC). The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is a research institution with a Ph.D. program. Outstanding graduate students and faculty are being attracted internationally. OIST is beautifully situated on the tropical island of Okinawa, Japan. A postdoctoral position in “Multiphysics Brain Aging Modeling” is available in the group of Prof. Johannes Weickenmeier at Stevens Institute of Technology right outside New York City (www.weickenmeierlab.com<http://www.weickenmeierlab.com/>). The Soft Matter Biomechanics Lab combines experimental methods to biomechanically characterize brain tissue properties and various computational modeling techniques (e.g. finite element analysis, multiphysics modeling, medical image analysis) with the ultimate goal to better understand healthy brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Our constitutive aging and Alzheimer’s disease models couple neurobiology and mechanics (i.e. morphological shape changes and tissue loading) in order to identify abnormal aging patterns and brain regions at risk of developing secondary damage, such as white matter hyperintensities, hypoperfusion, traumatic injury, and vascular degeneration. We validate our models against longitudinal imaging data from databases such as the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). We are looking for applications with prior experience in advanced medical image analysis, data analysis, and modeling. Knowledge in the biology of aging is a significant advantage. New research in our limbo group (Ryom and Treves, Phys Rev X Life, 2023, and unpublished) and extensive data on language parameters collected by Longobardi and collaborators (Ceolin et al, Phil Trans Roy Soc B, 2021) suggest that language diversity may reflect the disordered freezing dynamics that in a spin glass leads to a multiplicity of ground states. In a simplified model, vectors of binary syntactic parameters interact via strong asymmetric logical implications and weak partly symmetric influences, which can produce critical slowing down through a novel mechanism of percolated freezing. Postdoc position in sleep modeling/analysis

POSTDOC POSITION IN MODELING/ANALYSIS FOR UNDERSTANDING SLEEP OVERVIEW. An NIH-funded collaboration between David Prober (Caltech), Thai Truong (USC) and Geoff Goodhill (Washington University in St Louis) aims to gain new insight into the neural circuits underlying sleep, through a combination of whole-brain neural recordings in zebrafish and theoretical/computational modeling. A postdoc position is available in the Goodhill lab to contribute to the modeling and computational analysis components. PROJECT DETAILS. Using novel 2-photon imaging technologies Prober and Truong are recording from the entire larval zebrafish brain at single-neuron resolution continuously for long periods of time, examining neural circuit activity during normal day-night cycles and in response to genetic and pharmacological perturbations. The Goodhill lab is analyzing the resulting huge datasets using a variety of sophisticated computational approaches, and using these results to build new theoretical models that reveal how neural circuits interact to govern sleep. APPLICANT PROFILE. Applicants should have a strong background in mathematics/theory/computation applied to biological problems. Experience in analyzing sleep processes is desirable but not required. LAB ENVIRONMENT. The Goodhill lab is an interdisciplinary environment of students and postdocs from a diverse array of backgrounds including neuroscience, mathematics, physics and engineering, working together on understanding neural circuit computation, particularly relating to neural development. The lab both performs its own behavioral and neural imaging experiments with larval zebrafish, and collaborates on the analysis of data generated elsewhere. UNIVERSITY ENVIRONMENT. Dear Comp-Neuro listserv, I'm excited to announce that the Rich Lab will be established in the University of Connecticut's Department of Physiology and Neurobiology in January 2024. The lab will use diverse tools from computational neuroscience to study how neuronal diversity drives physiologically relevant brain function in neuronal circuits, and how disruptions to this diversity might contribute to various neuropathologies.
