Title: From Theory to Practice: Overcoming Challenges in Implementing AI-Based CDSSs in Healthcare Abstract: In recent years, the adoption of computer-assisted tools employing Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques has increased in several fields. These tools, which harness machine-learning and deep-learning architectures, have been pivotal in Medicine with the development of Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs). CDSSs are designed to assist clinicians in critical healthcare processes, where understanding the decision-making process and ensuring system reliability are paramount. Despite the potential of data-driven AI, its application in medicine remains fraught with challenges, including the creation of high-performing yet non-interpretable CDSSs. Consequently, only a few CDSSs have transitioned from theoretical frameworks to clinical practice. Several factors hinder this transition: insufficient clinician involvement in data preparation, limited datasets, a lack of external validation, etc. The engagement of clinicians in model interpretation is crucial, as relying solely on accuracy metrics raises significant concerns about the models' validity. Regulatory agencies have responded by proposing frameworks and guidelines such as the GDPR and the AI Act to address concerns about applications of machine learning models. This presentation aims to elucidate these critical challenges and provide recommendations for implementing reliable CDSS. In particular, the discussion will focus on achieving explainability in AI models, highlighting the importance of transparent and interpretable results. The concept of Trustworthy AI is central to this integration, emphasizing that explainability, one of the key features in trustworthy AI, is essential for developers to technically validate results, for clinicians to align models with clinical literature, and for patients to understand the decisions. The presentation will cover methods to achieve explainability in both shallow and deep learning architectures, considering tabular and image inputs. Additionally, a new paradigm addressing the accuracy-explainability trade-off will be discussed, offering insights into future developments in this field. Short Bio: Francesco Prinzi received his Ph.D. in biomedicine, neuroscience and advanced diagnostics in 2023, University of Palermo. He is currently Assistant Professor at University of Palermo and affiliated with the Computer Laboratory of the University of Cambridge (UK). Postdoc in neuroscience of reward learning The successful candidate will work with Prof. Todd Hare and other SNS Lab researchers on the neuro-computational basis of human learning and decision making using cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques. For example, the successful candidate will work on a project aimed to determine if reward learning and corresponding striatal responses incorporate causal knowledge during Pavlovian conditioning. Using theoretically grounded and empirically verified reward learning predictions – blocking, conditioned inhibition, and overexpectation – we will test how Pavlovian conditioning operates over stimuli that are known to be either causal generators or correlated predicters of reward outcomes. Knowledge of the causal mechanisms should, in principle, determine how a reward learning agent summates predictions over two or more conditioned stimuli and whether a specific conditioned inhibitor will block a given causal state. We will test these hypotheses using modified versions of the standard conditioned inhibition and overexpectation paradigms together with functional neuroimaging. The results of these studies will provide important new insights into the fundamental nature of reward learning. The Theoretical Neuroscience Group of the University of Bern is seeking applications for a PhD position, funded by a Swiss National Science Foundation grant titled “Why Spikes?”. This project aims at answering a nearly century-old question in Neuroscience: “What are spikes good for?”. Indeed, since the discovery of action potentials by Lord Adrian in 1926, it has remained largely unknown what the benefits of spiking neurons are, when compared to analog neurons. Traditionally, it has been argued that spikes are good for long-distance communication or for temporally precise computation. However, there is no systematic study that quantitatively compares the communication as well as the computational benefits of spiking neuron w.r.t analog neurons. The aim of the project is to systematically quantify the benefits of spiking at various levels by developing and analyzing appropriate mathematical models. The PhD student will be supervised by Prof. Jean-Pascal Pfister (Theoretical Neuroscience Group, Department of Physiology, University of Bern). The project will involve close collaborations within a highly motivated team as well as regular exchange of ideas with the other theory groups at the institute. The PhD candidates should hold a Master degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational Neuroscience, Neuroscience or a related field. She/he should have keen interests in developing theories that can be tested experimentally. Preference will be given to candidates with strong mathematical and programming skills. Expertise in stochastic dynamical systems, point processes, control theory, information theory and nonlinear Bayesian filtering will be a plus. We are entering the final week of the 2024 competition - please submit your benchmarks to highlight the flaws in current state-of-the-art models of vision (and win prizes)! In 2022, the first Brain-Score Competition led to new and improved models of primate vision that predicted existing benchmarks reasonably well. In this year's Brain-Score Competition 2024, we are closing the loop on testing model predictions by rewarding those benchmarks that show where models are the least aligned to the primate visual ventral stream. The Competition is open to the scientific community and we provide an infrastructure to evaluate a variety of models on new behavioral and neural benchmarks in a standardized and unified manner. Title: The Moral AI and How We Get There Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to be used for many life-changing decisions in medicine. Critics object that using AI in these areas is too likely to lead to harm, unfairness, and other moral wrongs. In response, I will argue that these decisions can be made safer and more ethical by building human moral values into the AI decisionmaker. But how can we do that? I will discuss problems for some proposed ways to build morality into AI from the top down and from the bottom up. Then I will explain our lab’s novel hybrid alternative, which surveys human moral judgments and then corrects for ignorance, confusion, and partiality. Because our approach is based on idealized observer theories in ethics, it minimizes substantive assumptions about what is morally right or wrong, and it can be used in a wide variety of contexts. I will report initial empirical results using our method and discuss potential applications to kidney allocation and dementia. In recent years we have done both computational and experimental studies that demonstrate that the same physiological output can arise from multiple, degenerate solutions, and that individual animals with similar behavior can nonetheless have quite different sets of underlying circuit parameters. Most recently, we have been studying the resilience of individual animals to perturbations such as temperature and high potassium concentrations. This has revealed that extreme environmental experiences can produce long-term changes in circuit performance that can be hidden, or “cryptic” unless the animals are again challenged or perturbed. Our present experimental and computational work is designed to understand differential resilience in natural, wild-caught animals in response to climate change, and shows long-lasting influences of the animals’ temperature history. *About VVTNS : Created as the World Wide Neuroscience Seminar (WWTNS) in November 2020 and renamed in homage to Carl van Vreeswijk in Memoriam (April 20, 2022), its aim is to be a platform to exchange ideas among theoreticians. CNS-2024 Workshop on “Neuronal Oscillations: From Mechanisms to Computation” Information and call for spontaneous presentations by members of the community The 2024 Annual Computational Neuroscience Meeting ( https://www.cnsorg.org/cns-2024; CNS-2024) will be in Natal, Brazil, July 20-24. The last two days of the meeting are devoted to workshops organized by members of the community. As in previous years, we are organizing a workshop on “Oscillations: from mechanisms to computations”. The workshop is scheduled for July 24. The primary purpose of this workshop is to bring together modelers, experimentalists, and theorists with the goal of sharing and discussing their current results and ideas on the underlying mechanisms that govern the generation of these rhythms at various levels of organization, and their functional implications. Following the tradition of this workshop - We have reserved slots for members of the community whom we might not have been aware of their interest in actively participating in the workshop, particularly the more junior members of the community - We are calling for spontaneous five minutes long data blitz where interested students and postdocs can briefly present their work and contribute to the discussion - We will allow for ample time for discussion by keeping the talks relatively brief. We would like to conclude by having an open discussion on 1. The role of oscillations for neural computation 2. The opportunity that presents to the community to apply the insights from oscillatory dynamics in the brain to the design of artificial neural networks (ANNs). If time becomes an issue, we will have this discussion after the regular workshop schedule to allow for a larger group of participants. Bridging the gap for mathematical models of gap junctions PhD and post-doctoral positions available with Dr Áine Byrne (https://people.ucd.ie/aine.byrne) in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at University College Dublin’s . This project seeks to develop novel mathematical models of gap junction modulation in the brain. Gap junctions promote the synchronous activation of neurons, a signature of epileptic seizures. Using a combination of mathematical models and electrophysiological experiments, we will investigate the interplay between gap junction coupling and neuronal synchronisation. Particular attention will be paid to how gap junction coupling varies in response to changes in the surrounding environment. This newfound understanding will be exploited to understand the emergence of excessive neuronal synchronisation in epilepsy and identify novel treatments. Experiments will be carried out at Trinity College Dublin under the guidance of collaborator Prof Mark Cunningham (https://www.cunninghamlab.org/) who will provide training and the use of his facilities. PhD student A 4-year fully funded position is available from September 1st, 2024. Funding includes a stipend of €22,000 per year and a travel allowance of €1,500 per year (years 2-4). Candidates should have a strong mathematical background, programming skills (Python, LaTeX, C++, Linux), an excellent command of the English language, good communication skills, and a passion for interdisciplinary projects. A MSc in mathematics, physics, computer science or a related field is desirable, but candidates with an excellent undergraduate degree (first class honours) may also apply. The deadline for applications is July 15, 2024, however, later applications may also be considered. POSTDOC POSITION IN DECODING AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS FROM MOVEMENT A postdoc position is available in the lab of Geoff Goodhill at Washington University in St Louis for an NIH-funded project to help improve early diagnosis of ASD by using cutting-edge tools from machine learning and computational ethology. PROJECT. Motor differences are one of the earliest markers of increased ASD likelihood in infancy. Our goal is to develop broadly-applicable diagnostic tools which combine automated extraction of kinematic features from video data with new machine learning techniques to capture ASD motor function variability. As a first step, we are applying cutting-edge developments in computer vision, machine learning and computational ethology to a rich, longitudinal video dataset of infants being screened for ASD. APPLICANT PROFILE. The ideal applicant would have a strong background in all of ASD, human movement, machine learning and computational ethology. However given the rarity of this combination we are happy to consider candidates with only some of this background, but a strong desire to learn about the other elements. LAB ENVIRONMENT. I will discuss our work on one facet of this challenge — namely understanding generalization or “scaling laws” in learned neural networks as a function of basic control variables. I’ll discuss a taxonomy we develop that classifies different regimes of scaling behavior. We identify regimes where generalization exhibits universal scaling behavior and others where it can be traced back to properties of the data and neural architecture. The theoretical analysis is enabled by leveraging exactly solvable models of deep neural networks that arise naturally in the limit of large hidden layers. Along the way, I’ll also discuss our work on these theoretical models, which have been a useful starting point for theoretical descriptions of neural network dynamics. Finally, I’ll discuss our findings connecting generalization in neural networks to properties of the learned data manifold. Title: The Moral AI and How We Get There Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to be used for many life-changing decisions in medicine. Critics object that using AI in these areas is too likely to lead to harm, unfairness, and other moral wrongs. In response, I will argue that these decisions can be made safer and more ethical by building human moral values into the AI decisionmaker. But how can we do that? I will discuss problems for some proposed ways to build morality into AI from the top down and from the bottom up. Then I will explain our lab’s novel hybrid alternative, which surveys human moral judgments and then corrects for ignorance, confusion, and partiality. Because our approach is based on idealized observer theories in ethics, it minimizes substantive assumptions about what is morally right or wrong, and it can be used in a wide variety of contexts. I will report initial empirical results using our method and discuss potential applications to kidney allocation and dementia. *Universal description of stochastic oscillators - higher dimensional examples, extraction of the mapping from data, and networks of oscillators * Within DFG-funded project, I am looking for a PhD candidate to work on the theoretical description of stochastic oscillations.Specifically, we want to apply and generalize a recently developed universal description of stochastic oscillators (Perez-Cervera et al. PNAS, 2023) in three respects: (i) it should be applied to oscillators that have higher dimensions than two going beyond what has been studied before; (ii) the nonlinear transformation at the core of the procedure should be extracted from (simulation or experimental) data; (iii) the theory for coupled stochastic oscillators will be more thoroughly grounded and, moreover, extended to the case of networks of stochastic oscillators (more than two oscillators, the case previously investigated). These explorations and extensions of the framework have potential applications for the theoretical description of many systems outside of thermodynamic equilibrium, in particular in biology and neuroscience. The successful candidate should have a degree in physics, mathematics or computational neuroscience (a background in neurobiology is desirable but not obligatory), programming skills (C++, Python, LaTeX, Linux), an excellent command of the English language, good communication skills, team spirit, and, last but not least, great enthusiasm for interdisciplinary projects. We use advanced machine learning algorithms and seek a skilled, motivated, and enthusiastic individual with a Master's degree / postdoctoral fellow to join the lab. The position: Education: Candidates must have a Master's degree or a Ph.D. degree (or towards completion) in computational neuroscience, biology, computer science, data science, or a related discipline. Computer and General Skills: Knowledge of experimental statistics and excellent programming skills are required (Python, Matlab). High-level expertise in neuroimaging analyses is a plus. Previous experience in machine learning analysis and computational modeling is a plus. Takes initiative. Efficient representations of fast dynamic stimuli in populations of ON- and OFF-cells Within the DFG priority program "Evolutionary Optimisation of Neuronal Processing" and in an experiment-theory collaboration with the Benda/Grewe lab in Tübingen, we are looking for a PhD candidate to work on signal transmission of time-dependent signals in the electrosensory system of weakly electric fish. Specifically, we are interested in the following research questions: 1. How are high-frequency signals efficiently encoded in ON-OFF-pathways despite strongly reduced firing rates? 2. What is the impact of feedback on the representation of high-frequency information in ON- OFF-pathways? We are super happy to announce our next event, organized in collaboration between us, Center for the Advanced Study of Animal Behaviour, University of Konstanz and Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour! Are you ready for an expedition into the multifarious world of animal behaviour, where the lab meets the wild? Join us for RELab, *a unique experimental workshop in the scenic location of Lake Constance, Germany.* Unlike well-established scientific frameworks relying on synthetic stimuli, working with real, complex naturalistic stimuli presents unique challenges in tractability, interpretability, and relevance. This workshop will bring together* 16 exceptional early-career scientists and 5 renowned principal investigators in the fields from systems neuroscience to ethology*, to tackle conceptual and practical challenges in analyzing natural behaviours. RELab is not just about conventional lectures; it’s about *prototyping paradigms and hacking them together in both natural and controlled environments*. RELab is designed as a dialogue and a collective journey of discovery. Post-doc position [LAST CALL]: How long-term memories affect decision making and rule selection?

A postdoc position is available at the Department of Functional and Systems Neurobiology of the Cajal Institute (https://cajal.csic.es/en/home/) part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in collaboration with the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. The aim of this position is to develop a new framework for the analysis and interpretation of animal behavior and electrophysiological data from a high-throughput memory-based behavioral paradigm ( https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnbeh.2020.00064/full) developed in the Jercog Lab. Such a framework will involve different theories and modelling approaches such as reinforcement learning, stochastic decision processes, and history-dependent biases over a range of timescales from seconds to months, under the co-supervision of Yashar Ahmadian <https://cbl.eng.cam.ac.uk/ahmadian/>, University of Cambridge. The overarching aim of the project is to understand how long-term memories affect the decision making process in a volatile environment, focusing in particular on the hippocampal contribution to control (e.g. Lengyel & Dayan 2008 <https://proceedings.neurips.cc/paper_files/paper/2007/file/1f4477bad7af3616…>, Stachenfled et al. 2017), and using approaches such as rational control (Wu et al 2020 <https://www.pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas.1912336117>) to infer the internal beliefs and models used by animals in the task. Our lab is part of a larger network of Spanish neuroscience institutes including the CINC <https://www.cinc.csic.es/research-areas/>, the Neurotech <https://espanadigital.gob.es/lineas-de-actuacion/spain-neurotech> and the IN <https://in.umh-csic.es/en/>. The institute is located in the center of Madrid, one of the most exciting cities in the south of Europe, well connected with the rest of the world.
