Dear all, Applications to the PhD program in Behavior, Cognition, and Neuroscience (BCaN) at American University, Washington DC, are currently invited through *December 1* for a Fall 2024 start. The following *cognitive neuroscience* faculty are anticipating accepting a PhD student this cycle: *Dr. Laurie Bayet *directs the *Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience lab*, which focuses on infant cognitive and visual development. The lab combines neuroimaging (EEG, fNIRS), eye-tracking, behavioral methods, and computational (e.g., machine learning) tools to uncover how infants and young children learn to interpret complex visual objects, such as those that are relevant to affective, social communication. Current areas of focus include (1) the early development of high-level visual representations, in comparison to computational models of vision; and (2) social and affective communication understanding in typical-risk and elevated-risk infants. Prior experience with either developmental/neuroimaging research or programming/ machine learning (we use Python, Matlab, and/or R) is strongly preferred but not strictly required, as training will be provided. The lab is currently funded by the National Science Foundation, a NARSAD Young Investigator Award from the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, a Toffler Scholar Award from the Karen Toffler Charitable Trust, and American University. The Ed Neuro Lab investigates the thinking and reasoning skills that impact learning science and mathematics, and examines the role of motivations such as interest and curiosity. We are especially interested in understanding curiosity and visual-spatial reasoning in science. At the heart of our work is a desire to reduce disparities among individuals typically under-represented in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields by conducting research that contributes to a deeper understanding of how students engage with science and mathematics. We conduct research at the intersection of cognitive neuroscience and educational settings, and we apply methods from psychology, neuroscience, and education to study learning in the laboratory and in K-12 schools. Research in the lab is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Academy of Education. The main topic of this PhD is to understand neural representation of objects and materials. Specifically, we study how humans estimate object properties and plan interactions in an immersive multimodal environment using generative AI, Human Psychophysics, EEG and functional brain imaging methods. We use a combination of psychophysics, deep learning, generative AI, VR/AR, computer graphics, EEG/MEG methods. The candidate will receive hands-on training in one or several of these areas. Besides this topic, we also study the visual development of material and object perception in infancy and early childhood through a collaboration with Laurie Bayet in the Department of Neuroscience using behavioral and EEG methods. In addition, Xiao lab also studies computer vision and collaborates with researchers at Virginia Tech, NIH/NEI, George Mason University, University of Giessen, and the University of Tokyo. We are looking to recruit a new postdoctoral associate for a large collaborative project on the anatomical development of the human cerebellum. The overall goal of the project is to develop a high-resolution normative model of human cerebellar development across the entire life span. The successful candidate will join the Diedrichsen Lab<http://www.diedrichsenlab.org/> (Western University, Canada) and will work with a team of colleagues at Erasmus Medical Center, the Donders Institute (Netherlands), McGill, Dalhousie, Sick Kids, and UBC (Canada). We are thrilled to announce a day of talks on algorithmic innovation and entrepreneurship (Boston, 27th Nov). TLDR: This will feature speakers from MIT and Harvard talking about the design and application of algorithms for innovation, discovery, and design in their research: www.algopreneurship.org We will be hosting leading researchers from MIT, Harvard, Oxford, Princeton, and Stanford, who will give a succession of short talks that spotlight how their algorithms are being used to generate innovations in AI research and biotech, including Professor George Church, one of the founders of synthetic biology, and Professor Mina Lukovic, who leads the Algorithmic Design Group at MIT. A group of industry leaders will attend and discuss these ideas in Q&A sessions, roundtable discussions, and panel events. These include faculty from MIT Sloan and Harvard Business School, as well as representatives from entrepreneurship, VCs, and larger tech, consultancy, and biomedical companies. It is primarily aimed at students and researchers in the computational/theoretical neuroscience community, and I hope it will contribute to make our community even more lively and generous 🙂. I believe having a podcast where guests are invited to talk about their work is quite valuable for a scientific field, like the podcast "BrainInspired" for the NeuroAI community. Appointees will join as Grossman Center Postdoctoral Fellows, with the freedom to work with any of its faculty members. We especially welcome applicants who develop computational models and machine learning analysis methods to study the brain at the circuits, systems, or cognitive levels. The Theory of Neuronal Circuits lab investigates how the cellular and synaptic circuitry of neuronal circuits supports the complex dynamics and computations that are routinely observed in the brain. The Distributed Neural Dynamics and Control lab investigates how subcortical structures interact with cortical circuits to subserve cognitive processes such as memory, attention, and decision making. The Artificial and Biological Neuroscience lab investigates the geometry of representations in different areas of the brain to understand the computational support of cognitive processes like flexible behavior and generalization by developing computational tools and collaborating with experimental labs. Two postdoc positions are available at RIKEN Center for Brain Science, Japan, to work with Taro Toyoizumi on Computational/Theoretical Neuroscience. Our research is within the field of Computational Neuroscience. We utilize computer models to explore how information is processed in the brain and how the brain circuits adapt to the environment. Drawing on analytical techniques from statistical physics and information theory, we probe the key functional properties of neural circuits. We apply these techniques to distill diverse experimental findings into a few core concepts. We hold a particular interest in activity-dependent forms of plasticity in the brain, which exert significant influences on learning, memory, and development. Leveraging mathematical models, we aim to formulate a theory that bridges cellular-level plasticity rules and computation. The capacity of neurons to represent and retain information is gauged from the structure and behavior of resulting circuits. Hi, Could you distribute this announcement to your students? Thanks a lot! We are seeking 3 master's students to systematically evaluate Virtual Epilepsy Patients (VEP). The VEP workflow employs computational models and machine learning techniques to estimate epileptogenic networks and assist in surgical strategies. In this context, the computational models are personalized whole-brain network models based on the patient's recorded data. VEP represents the first well-established instance of applying the concept of virtual brain twins in a clinical trial, called Epinov. Dramatic advances in the ease with which large-scale datasets of behavior, neural activity, connectomic and gene expression information can be collected have coincided with a revolution in the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence-based algorithms to interrogate such datasets. Concurrently, these new datasets are inspiring exciting new developments in mathematical tools for extracting their underlying structure and relationships. What is the current state of the art in our theoretical/computational understanding of the brain, and what does the future hold? You are invited to join an exciting line-up of leaders in the field to address these questions. Postdoctoral position in computational neuroscience methods (NEURON simulator)

The McDougal lab at Yale University seeks one or two highly motivated Postdoctoral Associates to advance the frontiers of neuroscience simulation. In addition to papers, etc, this work will be shared with the community in the form of enhancements to the NEURON<https://nrn.readthedocs.io/> simulator. Related lab projects include: combining machine learning and mechanistic modeling, multisimulation (interoperation with other tools), high-resolution simulations of subcellular chemical dynamics, and algorithm development (GPUs, initialization, performance enhancements). The Postdoctoral Associate will lead one or more of these projects and will present this work at conferences, in publications, and in the form of open-source software. Mentorship and career development opportunities will be tailored to the Postdoctoral Associate’s interests. Applicants should hold or be about to complete a PhD in a quantitative field (e.g., mathematics, computer science), neuroscience, or a related field. Strong programming skills in Python and C++ are essential, as is scientific excellence as demonstrated through publication history. Experience with the NEURON<https://nrn.readthedocs.io/> simulator, in machine learning, numerical methods, and/or GPU computing is desirable, but not required. *Flatiron Research Fellow (Postdoctoral Fellow), NeuroAI and Geometric Data Analysis* *Description* Applications are invited for Flatiron Research Fellowships (FRF) in the NeuroAI and Geometric Data Analysis Group (SueYeon Chung, PI) at the Center for Computational Neuroscience at the Flatiron Institute of the Simons Foundation, whose focus is on understanding computation in the brain and artificial neural networks by: (1) analyzing geometries underlying neural or feature representations, embedding and transferring information, and (2) developing neural network models and learning rules guided by neuroscience. To do this, the group utilizes analytical methods from statistical physics, machine learning theory, and high-dimensional statistics and geometry.The CCN FRF program offers the opportunity for postdoctoral research in areas that have strong synergy with one or more of the existing research groups at CCN or other centers at the Flatiron Institute. In addition to carrying out an independent research program, Flatiron Research Fellows are expected to: disseminate their results through scientific presentations, publications, and software release, collaborate with other members of the CCN or Flatiron Institute, and participate in the scientific life of the CCN and Flatiron Institute by attending seminars, colloquia, and group meetings. Flatiron Research Fellows may have the opportunity to organize workshops and to mentor graduate and undergraduate students. The Bazhenov Lab at the University of California, San Diego, is currently seeking to fill a postdoctoral position to study the role of sleep in memory, learning, and forgetting. This exciting project involves close collaboration with experimental labs. The ultimate goal of the work is to advance our understanding of how the human and animal brain learns from experience and how sleep contributes to memory consolidation for recent learning. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing anatomically realistic biophysical brain network models based on experimental data. These models will be instrumental in uncovering network dynamics involved in memory consolidation, reconsolidation and forgetting during sleep, as well as guiding data analysis and generating innovative experimental predictions. Additionally, depending on the candidate's interests and experience, there may be opportunities to participate in other related lab projects. These projects include developing whole human brain model based on Human Connectome Project (HCP) data and mouse brain model based on the Allen Mouse Brain Connectivity Atlas. Other projects involve applying principles learned from neuroscience to artificial intelligence, focusing on areas such as continuous learning, knowledge generalization, and adaptation to novel situations and contexts. An ideal candidate should have a background in computational/theoretical neuroscience and neural modeling. Applicants with the following skills are particularly encouraged to apply: (a) research background in cognitive, systems, or computational neuroscience, (b) expertise in electrophysiology in behaving animals, and/or (c) highly quantitative data analytic skills (possibly including computational modeling). The candidate will carry out high-density multi-areal electrophysiological recordings while animals are engaged in attention-demanding visual tasks. The individual will be required to train animals, generate electrophysiological data, and perform advanced statistical data analyses and modeling in a highly collaborative research environment. This is a multi-year fully funded position. The initial appointment will be for a period of 1 year, with scope for multi-year renewal subject to satisfactory progress. Envigado is in the Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley, close to Medellín, the second-largest city in Colombia, and the capital of the department of Antioquia. Envigado was recognized recently as one of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (UNESCO GNLC). The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is a research institution with a Ph.D. program. Outstanding graduate students and faculty are being attracted internationally. The postdoc will be based at Inria, in Montpellier. The aim of the project is to develop a multiscale model of Dravet syndrome, from ionic channels of interacting neurons to large neural populations. We will use various modeling frameworks, adapted to the scale, from piecewise-deterministic Markov processes to mean-field formalism. The postdoc will perform a mathematical analysis of the models, extensive numerical simulations as well as data analysis using neural recordings from our experimental partners. Regarding profiles that we are seeking, familiarity of the candidate with mathematical modeling in Neuroscience and Markov processes.
