Applications are invited for one full-time PhD studentship for a period of 3 years, at the Department of Informatics, Bioengineering, Robotics, and System Engineering (DIBRIS), University of Genoa, Italy. The position will start on Nov 1st, 2023 on the following research project: **Early vision function in silico networks of LIF neurons** One approach to understanding implications of the initial stages of visual processing is ideal observer analysis, which evaluates the information available to support psychophysical discriminations at various stages of the early visual representation. Computational approaches primarily rely on simple generative models, which do not take into account the distinctive properties of individual elementary channels, as well as the active nature of the input sensory pattern. Accordingly, many details remain underrated, as well as their implications on functional vision not fully understood. The project's goal is to develop an “artificial observer” composed of an active event-based camera feeding a neuromorphic multi-layer network of leaky integrate and fire (LIF) neurons. The system should provide the inference engines for relating visual representations to performance on perceptual judgement tasks. Multiple and varying parameters captured under complex, real-life conditions should be comparatively assessed in silicon and human observers. The research will be conducted at the Bioengineering/PSPC labs of DIBRIS. Applicants are expected to: (1) have a Master’s degree in Bioengineering, Computer Science, Physics or related disciplines, (2) have a keen interest in Vision Science and in Artificial Intelligence, (3) have good programming skills in at least one language (MATLAB, C/C++, Python, C#), (4) work well in group problem solving situations, (5) have intermediate communication skills (oral and written in English). NEURON, NetPyne, and TREES at OCNS 2023 in Leipzig

Join us at CNS 2023 in Leipzig on July 15th for the tutorial T01: Building mechanistic multiscale models with NEURON, NetPyNE, and TREES. NEURON is a simulator for neurons and networks of neurons with strong support for morphologically detailed models. TREES is a toolbox for working with morphologies, and NetPyNE is an abstraction layer on top of NEURON to facilitate the specification of large network models. We will talk about both basic and new features. This tutorial will be highly interactive, focusing on cloud-based examples for the NEURON and NetPyNE portions. SPARC Data Structure Feedback from the community is an important part of our review process; it helps us ensure that the standard has community support and is useful and practical to the community. By commenting, you contribute to improving the standard for current and future users! 1. Digital SWC Reconstructions Describing Neuron Morphology (SWC) SWC files (file extension of .swc) are text-based (ASCII text) files that describe three-dimensional neuronal or glial morphology. These digital reconstructions represent morphology as a vectorized tree structure, made of a series of connected nodes. An SWC file contains a series of text-based rows where each neuron node is described by a single row of only seven space-separated values. The format is simple and intuitive; a parser of or writer to the format could be implemented by anyone with knowledge of any programming language. With an open archive and freely available structure editor, the SWC system facilitates community-wide pooling of data for building biophysically realistic neuronal models and studying the morphological variation between neurons, contributing to a greater neuroscientific cooperation and openness. SPARC Data Structure Financially backed by the NIH Common Fund, SPARC is a large-scale project which aims to deepen our knowledge of nerve-organ interactions. With an initial focus on bioelectronic medicine, the SPARC consortium created the SPARC data structure (SDS), a file and metadata organizational scheme inspired by the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS). This data structure has proven capable of handling complex datasets from multiple and heterogeneous species, measurement techniques, and spatial scales. One of the primary purposes of SDS is to increase the integrity of scientific research by promoting FAIR and open science practices, particularly by facilitating the generation of well-annotated, organized, standardized, and shared biomedical datasets. In OST HMDs the direct view of the world is mostly preserved and there is no perspective conversion in viewpoint and field of view, as with video see-through (VST) systems. This aspect confers a clear advantage over VST solutions, particularly when used to interact with close objects. Although there have been significant improvements to performance and comfort of OST HMDs, limitations associated with human perception still remain to be addressed. In order to provide the user with a realistic, natural and comfortable visual experience, a thorough and accurate knowledge of eye characteristics and HMD geometry must be assumed. These quantities are usually calibrated on a per-device and per-user basis, or modeled from scientific literature. A deviation of the actual values from the expected ones can result in incorrect camera placement, spatial distortions and non-uniformities, thus triggering discomfort in VR/AR. The goal of this research project is to develop methods and techniques to assess and mitigate discomfort and perceptual inconsistencies between real and augmented visual content in OST HMDs. A joint experimental and modeling approach will be followed in order to: 1. investigate methods to evaluate different sources of discomfort/mismatch; 2. develop subjective and objective methods to quantify the originated discomfort; 3. investigate strategies to mitigate the sources of discomfort/mismatch in AR/VR devices. *Requirements:* Applicants are expected to: 1) have a keen interest in Vision Science and in Augmented Reality, 2) have good programming skills in at least one language (Matlab, C/C++, Python, C#), 3) work well in group problem solving situations, 4) have intermediate communication skills (oral and written) in English or better. In the organization unit for Psychological Methods and Statistics of the Department of Psychology there is a vacancy for a *Research Associate/PhD (m/f/d) **starting October 2023 *for a limited period of 3 years. There is the possibility of personal scientific qualification (doctorate/post-doctoral thesis). The position is suitable for part-time work. At the Division of Psychological Methods and Statistics we develop and apply multivariate statistical modeling techniques and technologically advanced instrumentation for research in behavioral and health sciences. By means of these tools, applicable to modeling neurometric (EEG, DTI, fMRI, fNIRS) and psychometric data, collected within and outside the lab, we aim to understand individual differences and intraindividual fluctuations in typical and disordered sensory, cognitive and emotional processing and their behavioral outcomes across the lifespan – from neonatal age to late adulthood. The methodological and substantive topics we work at are diverse, but they inspire each other. We are committed to implementing Open Science techniques to foster reproducibility in our research and beyond. The position advertised here will work on structural and functional neuroimaging with the aim of developing advanced methods (complex dynamic networks) for measuring neuromarkers of cognitive sequelae after preterm birth. The selected candidates will be working on questions addressing how brain computations emerge from the dynamics of the underlying neural circuits and how the neural code is shaped by computational needs and biological constraints of the brain. To tackle these questions, we employ a multidisciplinary approach that combines state-of-the-art modeling techniques and theoretical frameworks, which include but are not limited to data-driven circuit models, biologically realistic deep learning models, abstract neural network models, machine learning methods, and analysis of the neural code. Our research team, the Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience Laboratory, is on the main UCLA campus and enjoys close collaborations with the world-class neuroscience community there. A postdoctoral scientist position is available at the Nathan Kline Institute (NKI) for Psychiatric Research (https://www.nki.rfmh.org<https://www.nki.rfmh.org/>) to work on computational neuroscience research funded by recently awarded grants. Our NIH-funded project investigates the brain's dynamic circuit motifs underlying internal vs. external-oriented processes in the auditory and interconnected areas, using circuit modeling of the thalamocortical system. In this project, the postdoc will build data-driven biophysical models constrained by data collected from electrophysiology labs at NKI (Noelle O’Connell, Charlie Schroeder) & The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research (Stephan Bickel), and then use the models to predict optimal neuromodulation strategies testable in vivo. Are you interested in how our brain is able to so precisely control the body, and adapt to new situations? Would you like to dive deep into current theories for how this works, and develop new ones? Are you either highly interested in modelling the brain, and/or in applying the resulting theories to practical problems? Then this is a PhD position you should apply for. To successfully control the body our brain needs to generate stable states (i.e. keep a hand somewhere), but also full dynamic behaviours (i.e. a full arm swing). The brain does this highly efficiently through networks of spiking neurons - the efficiency and success of which is yet to be reproduced in AI. Crucially, neural activity during dynamic tasks is often observed to lie on lower-dimensional manifolds. Why this is useful, and how networks generate and adapt such activity manifolds, is the subject of many theoretical models but still very much an open question. In this NWO-funded 4-year PhD project, using tools from both AI and neuroscience, you will develop neural networks which produce such low-dimensional manifolds and then use these to learn efficient and effective control. This project is expected to yield more capable AI systems and further our understanding of brain computations. Dependent on your background and interests, the project can either go deep into applying the resulting models to AI control problems, or reproduce and predict neuroscience experiments. You will be supervised by Dr. Sander Keemink and Prof. Marcel van Gerven, and advised by Dr. Nasir Ahmad. The project is hosted at the AI department of the Donders institute, where there are additional opportunities to collaborate with experts in neuroscience, robotics, AI, and other related disciplines. The Intelligent Systems Research Centre (ISRC) from Ulster University, Derry~Londonderry campus is delighted to announce that the international Computational Neuroscience, Neurotechnology and Neuro-inspired AI (ISRC-CN3) Autumn School will be held again for the third time this year. The school will be organised in a hybrid mode, providing facilities for both in-person and online attendees. Supported by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, IEEE Brain and other sponsors, this year's Autumn School will run from the 25th October to 31st October, inclusively. However, we have not fully achieved the emergence of intelligence and mind in artificial systems. To facilitate discussions on how cognitive capacities of artificial living systems could be improved and potentially propose a framework for exploring the origin, emergence and evolution of perception and emotions, we are organizing a workshop (CogFeel @ ALIFE 2023: https://sites.google.com/view/cogfeel-alife-2023) in conjunction with the 2023 Conference on Artificial Life (ALIFE 2023). We reinforce the role of cognitive feelings (i.e., feelings about one’s mental processes, encompassing senses of knowing, confidence, reality, and fluency, etc.) as an integrated component contributing to developmental individuality and diversity. We also recognize the difficulty in implementing (subjective) feelings in artificial systems which requires the differentiation whether these systems possess feelings or just behave as so. For a comprehensive perspective on how individual- and population-level diversity in cognitive and behavioral capacities emerges, in this workshop, we encourage discussions on methods and findings in disciplines including but not limited to: - Robotics, - Computational and behavioral neuroscience, - Psychology, - Virtual/augmented reality, and - Artificial intelligence, etc. We welcome submissions on topics within the fields of (neuro)robotics, computational and behavioral neuroscience, psychology, virtual/augmented reality, and artificial intelligence. We also encourage contributions from other relevant disciplines. Submissions should be in the form of extended abstracts (maximum 2 pages) or research articles (maximum 8 pages). We are planning to organize a special issue in partnership with a top academic journal where extended versions of selected contributions will be published. Dear colleagues, We have several openings for Postdoctoral Researchers to work at the intersection of Machine Learning and Computational Neuroscience funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant “DeepCoMechTome: Using deep learning to understand computations in neural circuits with Connectome-constrained Mechanistic Models“. The goal of DeepCoMechTome is to develop simulation-based machine learning tools that will make it possible to build neural network models that are both biologically realistic and computationally powerful. We are looking for candidates with a strong quantitative background and PhD in a relevant discipline, ideally in computational neuroscience, machine learning or numerical simulation, a genuine interest in collaborative work at the interface of machine learning and neuroscience, and strong programming skills (ideally Python and relevant deep learning frameworks). PhD position - Model-predictive control of brain plasticity for optimal non-invasive brain stimulation

About the Project Neuroplasticity is the mechanism that underpins the brain’s ability to learn or recover from traumatic events, but also its deterioration underlies several Neurodegenerative diseases and mental illnesses. It is an umbrella term that encompasses multiple processes occurring at different spatial and temporal scales (1, 2). The most commonly discussed type of plasticity is long-term potentiation (LTP) which is defined as an increase in efficacy between synapses of two neurons. Experiments designed to measure LTP are often done in cell slices or cultures using patch-clamp techniques. However, we often want to promote (and measure) plasticity in humans in-vivo but it is not clear how changes in synaptic efficacy manifest in macroscopic non-invasive imaging measurements such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), or electroencephalography (EEG) that are available for use in humans. This project aims to link our detailed cellular-level knowledge of plasticity processes with systems-level observations in humans and is focused on answering the following 2 questions: 1. How can we modulate plasticity non-invasively in the brain? 2. How can we measure plasticity in vivo? To answer these questions you will combine mathematical/computational modelling of biophysically realistic large-scale neural networks that exhibit plasticity with cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques to test the model predictions. The model will be adapted so that its output can be compared to the three major imaging techniques described above and you will determine how changes in connectivity between and within brain regions in the model predict changes in our imaging metrics. There will be a particular focus on developing an EEG marker of plasticity as this currently does not exist. Finally, you will test the model predictions in an imaging study combining brain stimulation, EEG, MRI and MRS in a proof-of-concept experiment in humans. This will provide us with a deeper understanding of how to modulate and measure plasticity that can be deployed in the future for medical applications of brain stimulation such as in Parkinson’s disease, depression and pain control.
