The successful candidate’s research will involve synergistic collaborations with a multidisciplinary team to investigate brain processes using methodologies such as computational modelling, machine learning and AI. Research to be conducted could, e.g., comprise modelling brain circuits like the olfactory bulb or the cerebellum and simulating and analysing their function. Additional impact could arise in machine learning, AI, data science, neurorobotics and neuromorphic computing. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a programme of research in collaboration with colleagues at UH and partner organisations in the UK and abroad. Leading the preparation and publication of research manuscripts is a key aspect of the role. Contributions to the preparation of research proposals and applications for funding to external bodies, such as the European Commission and the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) are expected. The postholder will create opportunities to maximise research activities, capturing relevant evidence to support impact and engaging with external partners and stakeholders. Most of the models were able to survive in the proposed environment for quite a long time, and one entry used the optimal decision strategy, with only 22 neurons (out of 1000 available). The challenge is still running with a new task (cued decision, which might be simpler) and a new agenda (you have two months). You'll find instructions at https://github.com/rougier/braincraft the rules for the new task. Reminder: you have have 1000 neurons (leaky rate models), 100 seconds of training time and 10 runs for evaluation. The difficulty comes from the imposed constraints. Doctoral position in Theoretical Biophysics (Deadline : 1st November 2025) We are seeking a doctoral student with a quantitative background. Ideally, the candidate should have a master degree in physics but other quantitative backgrounds will be considered. The researcher will be based in the Integrative Biophysics group at the University of Konstanz and Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour, located in Konstanz, Germany. The group focuses on a diverse set of theoretical biophysics problems. The doctoral project is a collaboration between the integrative biophysics research group and the research group of Prof. Ilya Nemenman at Emory University, Altanta, US. The doctoral student will have the opportunity to have research stays at Emory University. The project summary is as follows: *Project Title*: /Inferring dynamical interactions in social groups/ *Project Abstract*: Social interactions are one of the most foundational building blocks of group behaviors, shaping decision making strategies across ecologies. Social groups consist of small number of individuals in contrast with collectives that consist of large number of agents. Despite the importance of social groups as a building block of living systems, there is little understanding of mechanistic details of the nature of those social interactions and how they shape emergent social functional properties. This stands in contrast with physics of collectives, which usually focus on the dynamics of very large group of individuals and have been thoroughly studied. In an experimental sys-tem or in field observations tackling social behaviors, we do not know a priori the social forces, nature of those interactions and their dynamics. Recent advances in software and hardware allow us to track the behavior of multiple individuals over extended spatio-temporal scales. Thus it is crucial to develop methodologies to infer dynamical social interactions and social forces from experimental observations. This relates closely to work done inferring "social forces" from dusty plasmas. Recent theoretical work has developed an information theoretic approach to estimate intrinsic motivation, based on maximizing an agent's empowerment (defined as the mutual information between its past actions and future states). This approach can be used to study social behaviours, where individuals choose actions without an explicit reward signal. In this project, we are planning to apply this framework to infer and understand social behaviour of small animal groups specifically locusts, mice and marmosets monkeys offering not only a mechanistic insights into mechanisms of social organization but also make quantitative evolutionary comparison of social behaviours. *Relevant publications:* 1. The postdoc will be based at Boston University in the laboratory of Dr. J. The Smith lab at the University of Minnesota is seeking a motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher to study the development of large-scale networks in the developing brain. Our lab employs optical approaches to study the mechanisms of cortical network formation in the developing brain. We have recently obtained funding to use wide-field and 2-photon optogenetics to investigate how perturbations of early network function impact development. The mission of CCN is to develop theories, models, and computational methods that deepen our knowledge of brain function. CCN takes a vertically-integrated “systems" neuroscience approach, building models that are motivated by fundamental principles, that are constrained by properties of neural circuits and responses, and that provide insights into perception, cognition and behavior. This cross-disciplinary approach not only leads to the design of new model-driven scientific experiments, but also encapsulates current functional descriptions of the brain that can spur the development of new engineered computational systems, especially in the realm of machine learning. In addition to carrying out an independent research program, FRFs are expected to: disseminate their results through scientific presentations, publications, and software release, collaborate with other members of the CCN or Flatiron Institute, and participate in the scientific life of the CCN and Flatiron Institute by attending seminars, colloquia, and group meetings. Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce this year’s application cycle for The Shanahan Foundation Fellowship at the Interface of Data and Neuroscience, a three-year fellowship program aiming to bring fresh perspectives from diverse technical backgrounds to the field of neuroscience. The program is co-hosted by the Allen Institute and the University of Washington, through the Computational Neuroscience Center. It is directed by Dr. Christof Koch at the Allen Institute and Dr. Adrienne Fairhall at UW. Fellows choose a co-mentor from each of the two institutions and will be employed by the Allen Institute as a Scientist (salary starting at $106,780 annually), with an affiliate postdoctoral appointment at UW. Accepted fellows propose their own research project(s), with access to the Allen Institute's wealth of structural, genomic, and functional data collected over the past 15 years (brain-map.org<https://brain-map.org>). First, the research is empirical and addresses substantive questions in human cognition (e.g., perception, memory, decision making). Good computer programming skills (e.g., C++, Matlab, Python) are necessary. Some experience in EEG or MEG experimenting and data analysis would be beneficial, though not strictly required. Skills or interest in MRI processing (especially diffusion MRI), biophysical neural modeling, and machine learning are welcome. Traditional computational models perform well in artificial tasks but struggle to generalize to real-life ecological situations. In contrast, new deep learning models excel at processing real-world information and demonstrate cognitive abilities close to those of humans. However, these models are trained on impractically large datasets and use training protocols that are not cognitively feasible, which limits their ability to explain or predict human learning and cognitive development. This project aims to develop the first cognitively feasible learning agents—AI systems that learn language and cognition within constraints that mimic human development. Leveraging a unique dataset (the 1kD corpus)— continuous daily audio-visual recordings from 18 children’s first 1,000 days of life—we will train models directly on the ecologically valid, socially embedded experiences that shape children’s growth. Unlike large-scale industrial models, which depend on vast impersonal datasets, our approach emphasizes individual-centered, real-world input that captures the long-tail variability of human development. By replicating learning trajectories across multiple households, we will establish the first mechanistic framework for how natural input shapes children’s cognition. The project represents a bold shift from analyzing existing models to building new brain-inspired learning agents, directly addressing ecological validity and laying the foundation for a new generation of cognitive science. Short Bio: Uri Hasson grew up in Jerusalem. He studied philosophy and cognitive sciences at the Hebrew University as an undergrad. He completed his Ph.D. in Neurobiology at the Weizmann Institute in Israel and was a postdoctoral fellow at NYU before moving to Princeton. He is currently a Professor in the Psychology Department and the Neuroscience Institute at Princeton University. His research program aims to understand the neural basis of face-to-face, brain-to-brain, communication in real-world contexts, using big ECoG data and deep language models. The work spans multi-site morphometry, scanner harmonisation, model comparison, and external validation. Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce the opening of a Junior Professor (CPJ) position at the University of Lyon 1, entitled Towards a New Convergence of AI and Neuroscience The recruited candidate will lead a research project focused on the development of biologically plausible AI models, linking physiology and cognition. The position is affiliated with the CRNL (Centre de Recherche en Neurosciences de Lyon): https://www.crnl.fr/fr On the teaching side, the CPJ will contribute to the creation and promotion of new interdisciplinary training programs at the interface of AI and Biology/Health, across Bachelor, Master, and Engineering levels. A funding package of 260,000 euros (in addition to the candidate’s salary) is allocated to support of this project.
