COURSE OUTLINE =============== This is a one-year (full-time) or two-years (part-time) MSc degree programme, consisting of taught courses (105 credits) plus a seminar based course (15 credits) and a research project and dissertation (60 credits). (Note: students who need a Tier-4 VISA to study in the UK can only register for the full-time pathway). It is designed for students with a good degree in physical (computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering) sciences, however, individuals with different backgrounds but commensurate experience will also be considered. The core modules of this course include: (a) Advanced artificial intelligence (theoretical fundamentals and practical applications of decision-making, problem-solving and learning abilities in software agents) (b) Advanced machine learning (theoretical fundamentals and practical application of supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement and evolutionary learning) (c) Computer Vision (applications of computer vision in object recognition/tracking, medical image analysis, multimedia indexing and retrieval and intelligent surveillance systems) (d) Neural Computing (fundamentals of an emergent specialised area of computer science that is concerned to describe how the brain computes by simplifying neuronal biology to a set of equations) (e) Big Data Analytics and Modelling (a range of aspects in collecting, transforming, processing, analysing and make inferences out of large amounts of data, which can either be signals or visual data) (f) Applied signal and image processing (a range of aspects in capturing, processing, analysing and interpreting n-dimensional signal and image content) (g) Research methods (fundamental skills and background knowledge students need to undertake a research project including: surveying literature; selecting and justifying a research topic; planning of research; selection of appropriate research methods; evaluation of research; presentation and reporting of research; and legal, social, ethical and professional considerations) (h) Frontiers in machine learning and computer vision (a seminar based module about the state of the art in machine learning and computer vision research, including an understanding of the theoretical developments and current applications in the field) (i) Research project The final research project can be carried out ‘in house’ or in collaboration with an external partner, either from academia or industry. Modellers Workshop for the Brain Dynamics Toolbox This online course is for researchers who wish to simulate user-defined dynamical models using the Brain Dynamics Toolbox (bdtoolbox.org<http://bdtoolbox.org>). The toolbox allows the dynamics of any model to be explored interactively with minimal programming effort. Video lectures guide the student through every step of the process with a practical focus on the art of programming differential equations. The University of Magdeburg offers a 3-years postdoc position to study single cell recordings in humans, performed in epileptic patients for curative surgery. The project will investigate concept cells (a.k.a. Jennifer Aniston neurons) – that means, neurons in the hippocampus and surrounding areas that selectively fire to specific concepts, like different pictures and the written or spoken name of a particular person (e.g. Quian Quiroga et al, Nature 2005; Quian Quiroga, Cell 2019), which are involved in declarative memory functions. This is an exciting opportunity to work on brain imaging studies of cognitive function and dysfunction, cognitive development and learning disabilities. The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of research in the lab, including: acquisition and analysis of functional and structural brain imaging data, assembling, administering, and scoring neuropsychological assessments, screening and recruiting participants, obtaining informed consent, scheduling participants for testing, tracking progress of the study and behavioral data, verifying data and entering pertinent information into database for statistical analysis, conducting statistical analyses, and assisting with manuscript preparation. Please note many sessions with research participants will take place on the weekends, and occasionally in the evenings. A minimum commitment of two years is required. Qualifications Requires a BS/BA degree in psychology, human biology, neuroscience, biomedical engineering or related fields as well as one to two years of research experience. A strong academic record is essential. Past research experience in cognitive neuroscience is highly desirable. Experience with any of the following would be an added advantage: brain imaging data acquisition, MRI data analysis, neuropsychological assessments, computer programming, MATLAB, signal processing, and statistical analysis. The Stanford Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience Laboratory (scsnl.stanford.edu<https://med.stanford.edu/scsnl.html>) invites applications for post-doctoral positions with expertise in cognitive, systems and computational neuroscience. Candidates must have a PhD and research experience in cognitive neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, computer science, electrical/biomedical engineering, or related fields. The successful candidate will develop a vigorous research program that contributes to, and complements, ongoing research studies of human brain function and psychopathology.
