Dear Scientists, The Göttingen Campus Institute for Dynamics of Biological Networks (CIDBN)<https://www.uni-goettingen.de/de/608362.html> invites applications for a position of Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Biophysics (all genders welcome) The position will be full-time (currently 39,8 hours/week), German pay grade 13 TV-L, starting as soon as possible. The CIDBN Department "Physics of Biological Systems", headed by Prof. Fred Wolf, offers a fixed-term contract until June 30, 2025 with the perspective of an extension commensurate with building a competitive track record at the frontier of computational biophysics and neural circuit theory. Information is processed in brain circuits through the coordinated action of large-scale circuits of neurons and synapses. Ultimately, it is the nano-scale molecular architecture of neuronal synapses that can make or break the power of neural circuit computation. Progress in a broad suite of nanoscopy techniques is currently uncovering the molecular-level design of synapses subserving functions such as working memory or sensory coding. The spatio-temporal operation of these nano-machines and the efficiency of their design, however, remain to be understood and are core research aims of the Göttingen Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1286 "Quantitative Synaptology"<https://www.sfb1286.de/?lang=en>. We are inviting applications from theoretical biophysicists, molecular systems biologists, or computational scientists with an ambition to pioneer computational studies of synaptic functional design. In addition, the institute provides dedicated support for high-performance computing. The successful applicant will hold an excellent PhD in physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or equivalent, and have a strong interest in high-performance computing in neuroscience or cellular systems biology. We expect excellent analytical and coding skills, interest in working in a transdisciplinary team as well as excellence in scientific writing and reasoning. Experience in non-equilibrium statistical physics, stochastic dynamics, membrane biophysics, ion-channel and biochemical kinetics, buffered Ca-diffusion, and Ca-exocytosis coupling would be advantageous. Dear Computational Neuroscience Community, I would like to point you to a potentially useful Python Package that might be of interest for your research, especially in the realm dynamical models and spreading dynamics on networks. "ser": S(usceptible)E(xcited)R(efractory) model on graphs, a dynamical model of spreading excitations. Code Repository: https://github.com/fabridamicelli/ser As of today, a few people already trust it and the package registers >11K total downloads, ~500/month (pypi.org) and has been used already in a few research projects. A few interesting features: - It is light-weight and fast (`numba` accelerated), i.e. many experiments can be simply run on a laptop - Installation and getting started is easy: `pip install ser` - Example notebooks: https://github.com/fabridamicelli/ser/blob/main/examples The SER model is a classical cellular automaton model used to study all sorts of complex systems, ranging from forest fire dynamics to self-organized criticality in the brain. A fully-funded PhD is available with Dr Silvia Maggi and Professor Mark Humphries (University of Nottingham) and Dr Hazem Toutonji (University of Sheffield). Decision-making happens in dynamic environments. Understanding how subjects respond to such a fast-changing world requires approaches that can track subject's choice strategies at the resolution of single trials. We recently developed a Bayesian inference algorithm (Maggi et al., 2023, bioRxiv) that enables trial-resolution tracking of learning and exploration during learning. This project will build on this work to solve crucial problems of determining which of a set of behavioural strategies a subject is using and how to incorporate evidence uncertainty into its detection of the learning of strategies and transitions between them. Using the extended algorithm on datasets of rodents and humans performing decision tasks will let us test a range of hypotheses for how correct decisions are learnt and what innate strategies are used. Postdoctoral Position in modelling the impact of interoceptive signals on neural dynamics and human cognition. Group for Neural Theory and LNC2, Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris. A post-doctoral position in theoretical neuroscience is open to explore the impact of cardiac inputs on cortical dynamics. Understanding the role of internal states in human cognition has become a hot topic, with a wealth of experimental results but limited attempts at analyzing the computations that underlie the link between bodily organs and brain. Our particular focus is on elucidating how the different mechanisms for heart-to-cortex coupling (e.g., phase-resetting, gating, phasic arousal,..) can account for human behavioral and neural data, from somatosensory detection to more high-level concepts such as self-relevance, using data-based dynamical models. The ideal candidate should have a doctoral degree in a quantitative discipline and previous experience with computational approaches to neural functions, excellent programming skills coupled with an interest for, and a willingness to learn about, interoception and its influences on neural dynamics and cognition. The candidate will have a unique opportunity to join the project at its very inception and take a key role in the technical and conceptual development. The position is available for 3 years. The appointment starts Fall 2024. The PhD student will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary team that includes engineers, neuroscientists, and cognitive scientists. Two postdoc openings on computational analysis and modelling of dynamic functional connectivity in Alzheimer's Disease (Strasbourg, FunSy team, France)

We are happy to announce two postdoc openings in the group of Dr. Demian Battaglia, within the newly created Functional System Dynamics team at University of Strasbourg. The recruited postdocs will work as well in close collaboration with Dr. Romain Goutagny in Strasbourg and Dr. Viktor Jirsa at the Institute for Systems Neuroscience in Marseille. Both positions will focus on investigating the link between dynamics of large-scale functional connectivity and cognition: first, by assessing that the maintenance of a structured and fluid dynamics of Functional Connectivity is a predictor of cognitive performance and of its resilience despite progressing neurodegeneration; second by showing that interventions aiming at restoring "healthy" brain dynamics can rescue cognitive performance. POSITION START: as early as possible (ideally, before April 2024) POSTDOC DURATION: 24 months - TWO POSITIONS AVAILABLE Specifically the first position will delve with the study of dynamic Functional Connectivity variations and their correlation with variations of cognitive performance in longitudinal studies of aging and Alzheimer's disease cohorts (human resting state fMRI, physiological markers, cognitive profiling...). The second position will delve with the characterization of the effects of non-invasive visual gamma flickering stimulation (vGENUS) on electrophysiological activity in AD mutant mice and the modelling of the mechanisms behind these effects via virtual mouse mean-field whole-brain simulations. We are seeking for candidates, with previous experience in computational neuroscience or computer science, physics or mathematics training with strong motivation to transit toward neuroscience. Previous experience with whole-brain modelling or dynamic functional connectivity analyses would be a plus, although not strictly required. Interested candidates could have hybrid data analysis/computational modelling projects. We expect fluent programming skills (e.g., Python, C/C++, Matlab), good communication skills in English (oral and written), the ability to work well in an international team, curiosity and open-mindedness (more than applying existing methods, we tend to forge original ones, shaped by the specific scientific questions we work on). The candidate will integrate the Functional System Dynamics team (FunSy, https://funsyteam.org) at University of Strasbourg, which is a mixed theoretical and experimental group focusing on the functional roles of multi-scale system's level dynamics. FunSy research aims at linking dynamics to information processing, behavior and cognition in the healthy and pathological brain, exploring projects in rodent, non-human primate or human neuroscience as well as pure theory. Our lab focuses on investigating electromagnetic brain stimulation through computational methods and experiments with healthy volunteers. This position is funded by a newly awarded 5-year NIH R01 <https://reporter.nih.gov/project-details/10719222> grant with the goal to investigate a novel form of brain stimulation called transcranial temporal interference stimulation (TIS) and to optimize and translate it into an effective and efficient neuromodulation method for academic research and clinical practice. The fellow will develop novel optimization methods for high-density TIS and supervise a PhD student who will conduct simulations and optimizations using finite element modeling. The goal is to provide noninvasive and spatially specific treatment options to patients with brain disorders resistant to existing approaches. You will join a multidisciplinary team with expertise in computational modeling and optimization, human and primate electrophysiology, cellular and systems neuroscience, and biomedical engineering. It is composed of 5 researchers, 2 research engineers, 1 clinician and 11 national and international docs and postdocs. Neuroimaging, MEG, SEEG, virtual reality). Scientific context In various sensory modalities, in health and disease, we mainly study human perception in the aim of unravelling its underlying cognitive, computational and neurophysiological mechanisms. Our team aims at innovating at the theoretical, methodological, experimental and clinical levels. In particular, we study neuronal encoding and communication (e.g., the emergence and functional role of oscillations; the computation behind the contextual modulations of cortical responses) in relation to brain disorders. This also guides the design of neurotechnologies (brain-computer interfaces) for research and clinical applications: namely ADHD, motor deficits and disorders of consciousness. Therefore, and beside behavioural and classical neuroimaging approaches (electrophysiology, fMRI), we use multimodal high-resolution neuroimaging (e.g., laminar MEG and fMRI) and computational modelling (e.g., Bayesian inference, Dynamic Causal Models of neuronal and cognitive processes; Spiking/Deep Neural Networks). Methods and models lie at the heart of our research. With this call, we aim at strengthening this core axis that is key to translating our theoretical hypothesis into testable quantitative predictions. Our team has recently evolved so that our hypothesis driven approach now spans several spatial and temporal scales (e.g., from neurotransmitters to behaviour; from trial-by-trial dynamics to neurodevelopment). Instantiating these hypotheses requires to build on most recent advances in computational neurosciences, for developing biologically plausible models of cognitive processes and their underlying physiological mechanisms. We thus develop models to be confronted with actual data. We actually use models to strongly guide the design of our experiments and provide new tools for data analysis (new algorithms that can be implemented in open software and shared with the whole team and beyond). We attach particular importance to the valorisation of computational models and methods, be it through their publication and diffusion, or by virtue of their impact on translating our research into societal and clinical applications. Finally, we also value methodological developments that support the emergence of new functional techniques (e.g. for the analysis of data from the new generation of MEG systems: optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs)). Desired candidate profile We seek for a young researcher whose profile will strongly complement our team. We expect the candidate to lead her/his own research program in computational neuroscience, but in strong interaction with the topics and experimental projects in the team. Bryn Mawr College Department of Psychology Assistant Professor The Department of Psychology at Bryn Mawr College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Computational Neuroscience to begin August 1, 2024. We welcome scholars using computational methods to investigate the interface between psychological/neuroscience phenomena. We are looking for candidates who have a theoretically and methodologically sophisticated research program and can meaningfully incorporate undergraduate students in such research. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a computationally focused survey course in neuroscience, a seminar and lab course in their area of expertise, and contribute to service courses (e.g., Research Methods and Statistics; Introduction to Neuroscience). Candidates are also expected to be part of the department’s efforts to develop and teach a diverse and inclusive curriculum, including interdisciplinary programs and other college-wide initiatives such as the 360 Program, Emily Balch Seminars and/or the Data Science Minor. Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, or a closely allied field and must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by the start date. Postdoctoral experience is desirable. Dear colleagues, [All details about this school can be found online at https://www.nengo.ai/summer-school] The Centre for Theoretical Neuroscience at the University of Waterloo is excited to announce our 9th annual Nengo summer school on large-scale brain modelling and neuromorphic computing. This two-week school will teach participants to use the Nengo simulation package to build state-of-the-art cognitive and neural models to run both in simulation and on neuromorphic hardware. Summer school participants will be given on-site access to neuromorphic hardware and will learn to run high-level applications using Nengo! More generally, Nengo provides users with a versatile and powerful environment for designing cognitive and neural systems and has been used to build what is currently the world's largest functional brain model, Spaun, which includes spiking deep learning, reinforcement learning, adaptive motor control, and cognitive control networks. Applications are invited for one full-time PhD studentship for a period of 3 years, at the Department of Informatics, Bioengineering, Robotics, and System Engineering (DIBRIS), University of Genoa, Italy. The position will start on *Mar 1st, 2024* on the following research project: *A computational analysis of early vision function in silico networks of LIF neurons* Description: Computational models of early visual processing typically rely on simple linear contrast-encoding assumptions, which do not account for many higher-order mechanisms. Accordingly, many details remain underrated, as well their implications on functional vision. The project aims to implement neuromorphic multi-layer networks of leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) neurons in cascade to a motorized event-based camera (DAVIS, DVS, https://inivation.com/technology/) to obtain artificial replicas of the early stages of an active vision system. Testing the models will involve the assessment of multiple and varying parameters captured under real-life and adaptive conditions. At functional level, the system will (1) consider the neural resources required to account for a range of linear/nonlinear early visual processes, and (2) provide the inference engines for relating the resulting visual representations to performance on psychophysical tasks. The visual performance of the resulting silicon model will be comparatively assessed with that of typical a human observer. The objective is twofold: on the one hand, we contribute a deeper understanding of visual processes, especially about predicting how early computation may reverberate through the sensory pathways eventually contributing to functional vision. On the other hand, we contribute to the definition of a new generation of perceptual machines to be used in robotics and in general in newly developed Artificial Intelligence systems. The research will be conducted at the Bioengineering/PSPC labs of DIBRIS. We are thrilled to announce a day of talks on algorithmic innovation and entrepreneurship (Boston, 27th Nov). TLDR: This will feature speakers from MIT and Harvard talking about the design and application of algorithms for innovation, discovery, and design in their research: www.algopreneurship.org We will be hosting leading researchers from MIT, Harvard, Oxford, Princeton, and Stanford, who will give a succession of short talks that spotlight how their algorithms are being used to generate innovations in AI research and biotech, including Professor George Church, one of the founders of synthetic biology, and Professor Mina Lukovic, who leads the Algorithmic Design Group at MIT. A group of industry leaders will attend and discuss these ideas in Q&A sessions, roundtable discussions, and panel events. These include faculty from MIT Sloan and Harvard Business School, as well as representatives from entrepreneurship, VCs, and larger tech, consultancy, and biomedical companies. Appointees will join as Grossman Center Postdoctoral Fellows, with the freedom to work with any of its faculty members. We especially welcome applicants who develop computational models and machine learning analysis methods to study the brain at the circuits, systems, or cognitive levels. The current faculty members of the Grossman Center to work with are: (informal enquiries are welcome) Brent Doiron. The Theory of Neuronal Circuits lab investigates how the cellular and synaptic circuitry of neuronal circuits supports the complex dynamics and computations that are routinely observed in the brain. We use techniques from dynamical systems theory, statistical mechanics, and information theory to build and analyze cortical circuit models, often in collaboration with experimental teams investigating visual, olfactory, auditory, and decision-making cortices (bdoiron(a)uchicago.edu) Jorge Jaramillo. The Distributed Neural Dynamics and Control lab investigates how subcortical structures interact with cortical circuits to subserve cognitive processes such as memory, attention, and decision making. We are looking for scientists to work on projects in collaboration with experimental colleagues at UChicago, Allen Institute, and LMU Munich including: large-scale models for cognition in the mouse and in silico models of human deep brain stimulation (jorge.jaramillo(a)uni-goettingen.de) Ramon Nogueira. The Artificial and Biological Neuroscience lab investigates the geometry of representations in different areas of the brain to understand the computational support of cognitive processes like flexible behavior and generalization by developing computational tools and collaborating with experimental labs. We study the role of noise in representational geometry and behavior and use artificial neural networks to validate the results from biological networks (rnogueira(a)uchicago.edu <rnogeuira(a)uchicago.edu>). Postdoc at SISSA: Memory Glass in Language Evolution

The project is based on our research (Ryom and Treves, Phys Rev X Life, 2023, and unpublished) and on extensive data on language parameters collected by Longobardi and collaborators (Ceolin et al, Phil Trans Roy Soc B, 2021) which suggest that language diversity may reflect the disordered freezing dynamics that in a spin glass leads to a multiplicity of ground states. In a simplified model, vectors of binary syntactic parameters interact via strong asymmetric logical implications and weak partly symmetric influences, which can produce critical slowing down through a novel mechanism of percolated freezing. Our research is within the field of Computational Neuroscience. We utilize computer models to explore how information is processed in the brain and how the brain circuits adapt to the environment. Drawing on analytical techniques from statistical physics and information theory, we probe the key functional properties of neural circuits. We apply these techniques to distill diverse experimental findings into a few core concepts. We hold a particular interest in activity-dependent forms of plasticity in the brain, which exert significant influences on learning, memory, and development. Leveraging mathematical models, we aim to formulate a theory that bridges cellular-level plasticity rules and computation. The capacity of neurons to represent and retain information is gauged from the structure and behavior of resulting circuits. The aim of these competitions is to promote the development and application of reproducible analysis techniques. Hi, Could you distribute this announcement to your students? Thanks a lot! We are seeking 3 master's students to systematically evaluate Virtual Epilepsy Patients (VEP). The VEP workflow employs computational models and machine learning techniques to estimate epileptogenic networks and assist in surgical strategies. In this context, the computational models are personalized whole-brain network models based on the patient's recorded data. VEP represents the first well-established instance of applying the concept of virtual brain twins in a clinical trial, called Epinov. Our team is a world leader in advancing the concept of virtual brain twins. Three topics: 1. Systematic investigation of the sensitivity of the VEP in terms of electrode locations. 2. Systematic investigation of the robustness of the VEP in terms of data features. 3. Systematic investigation of the robustness of the VEP in terms of the size of the windows of seizure analysis. About the ideal candidates: * A strong grasp of mathematics, physics, neuroscience, and computer science, or a genuine enthusiasm for cultivating these skills, is essential. * The ability to quickly acquire proficiency in new computational tools is important, and we will offer comprehensive guidance to support your learning. * Proficiency in coding is a fundamental skill. * Ideally, you are a Master 2 student and would like to complete your 6-month internship in our laboratory. * An added advantage would be a strong motivation to pursue a career in scientific research and aspire to become a Ph.D. candidate. NEXTEN: Envisaging Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience for the next 10 years May 16-17, 2024 Washington University in St Louis nexten.wustl.edu Theoretical/Computational Neuroscience is currently undergoing a phase of unprecedented growth. Dramatic advances in the ease with which large-scale datasets of behavior, neural activity, connectomic and gene expression information can be collected have coincided with a revolution in the capabilities of Artificial Intelligence-based algorithms to interrogate such datasets. Concurrently, these new datasets are inspiring exciting new developments in mathematical tools for extracting their underlying structure and relationships. What is the current state of the art in our theoretical/computational understanding of the brain, and what does the future hold? You are invited to join an exciting line-up of leaders in the field to address these questions.
