New doctoral program for Computational Neuroscience at Penn

The Computational Neuroscience Initiative <https://cni.upenn.edu/> at the University of Pennsylvania is pleased to announce a new program for Interdisciplinary Training in Computational Neuroscience (ITCN) <https://cni.upenn.edu/education> at the doctoral level. The goal of the ITCN is to train a new generation of scientists to make quantitative links between properties of the brain and properties of the mind. ITCN trainees will learn to use computational methodology to interpret experimental results; build predictive models of brain function that inform the design of the experiments; and support an ever-growing list of neuroscience-related applications, from brain-machine interfaces in the clinic to cutting-edge forms of artificial intelligence. Applicants with the following skills are particularly encouraged to apply: (a) research background in cognitive, systems, or computational neuroscience, (b) expertise in electrophysiology in behaving animals, and/or (c) highly quantitative data analytic skills (possibly including computational modeling). The candidate will carry out high-density multi-areal electrophysiological recordings while animals are engaged in attention-demanding visual tasks. The individual will be required to train animals, generate electrophysiological data, and perform advanced statistical data analyses and modeling in a highly collaborative research environment. This is a multi-year fully funded position. The initial appointment will be for a period of 1 year, with scope for multi-year renewal subject to satisfactory progress. The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is a research institution with a Ph.D. program. Outstanding graduate students and faculty are being attracted internationally. OIST is beautifully situated on the tropical island of Okinawa, Japan. Dear all, We have funds for a two-year postdoc on Dravet syndrome modeling. This is part of an international collaboration between Inria (Bordeaux, Montpellier, Sophia Antipolis, France) and BCAM - the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (Bilbao, Spain), involving Fabien Campillo <https://www-sop.inria.fr/members/Fabien.Campillo/index.html>, Pierre Del Moral <https://people.bordeaux.inria.fr/pierre.delmoral/>, Mathieu Desroches <https://www-sop.inria.fr/members/Mathieu.Desroches/> and Serafim Rodrigues <https://www.bcamath.org/en/research/areas/m3a/mcen>. The postdoc will be based at Inria, in Montpellier. The aim of the project is to develop a multiscale model of Dravet syndrome, from ionic channels of interacting neurons to large neural populations. We will use various modeling frameworks, adapted to the scale, from piecewise-deterministic Markov processes to mean-field formalism. The postdoc will perform a mathematical analysis of the models, extensive numerical simulations as well as data analysis using neural recordings from our experimental partners. Regarding profiles that we are seeking, familiarity of the candidate with mathematical modeling in Neuroscience and Markov processes. Ability and willingness to do programming, as well as analyse experimental data, will also be a strong point to select candidates.
