The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is a research institution with a Ph.D. program. Outstanding graduate students and faculty are being attracted internationally. OIST is beautifully situated on the tropical island of Okinawa, Japan. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a relevant field and be independent researchers, i.e., should have an academic standing equivalent to senior postdoc, junior group leader, or faculty member at a research-intensive institution. The Humphries’ lab at the University of Nottingham is seeking a postdoc to join a project developing a precision medicine platform for neuromodulation, in collaboration with MachineMedicine Technologies and St George’s Hospital, London. A crucial unmet need in the management of Parkinson’s disease is how to reliably identify patients that would benefit from deep brain stimulation, the most effective treatment for Parkinson’s. The project team will create a machine-learning platform that synthesises wide-ranging personal and clinical data, combined with neural modelling, to predict the suitability of each Parkinson’s disease patient for deep brain stimulation. An exciting opportunity for the pipeline will be integrating computational models of the neural circuits disrupted in Parkinson’s. A computational neuroscience postdoc position is available at the Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (https://www.nki.rfmh.org) to work on recently awarded grants from NIH (MPI: Schroeder, Bickel, Neymotin) and ARO (PI: Neymotin). The NIH project aims to investigate the brain's dynamic circuit motifs underlying internal vs. external-oriented processes in the auditory system, using a combination of electrophysiology and biophysical circuit modeling of the thalamocortical system. The ARO project involves developing circuit models of the hippocampus interfaced with virtual agents, and training the agents/models to perform spatial navigation tasks using biologically-inspired learning rules. Dear All, the Daun lab at the University of Cologne / the Research Center Juelich in Germany is seeking a Postdoc to join a project on the computational modeling of the neural processes underlying motor control: Your Job: In comparison to sensory, cognitive, or affective-emotional systems, the motor system’s output is directly quantifiable and comparable across species. When studying the neural mechanisms underlying motor control, behavioral readouts across species offer the potential to overcome one grand challenge in neuroscience: bridging the gap between molecular, cellular, and systems levels. Importantly, the motor system is affected in many, if not all, neurological and psychiatric disorders. Hence, a more comprehensive understanding of the motor system will further our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying neurological and psychiatric disorders. Likewise, neuropsychiatric diseases allow novel insights into the motor system’s (dys-)function and testing models of motor control. The successful candidate will be part of a collaborative research center (CRC1451; https://www.crc1451.uni-koeln.de)<https://www.crc1451.uni-koeln.de),/> located at the University of Cologne that brings together neuroscientists investigating neural processes underlying motor control on these different levels in animals and humans, in both health and neuropsychiatric diseases. The fellowship will involve collaborations with research teams and laboratories associated with NeuroMat. The research to be developed by the post-doc fellow shall be strictly related to ongoing research lines developed by the NeuroMat team. The project may be developed at USP (São Paulo or Ribeirão Preto) or at UNICAMP (Campinas). We seek candidates capable of developing independent research in one of the research lines below: 1. Stochastic modeling of neurobiological data. 2. Acquisition, processing and quantitative analysis of electrophysiological data. 3. Development of neurostimulation protocols. Candidates to the first research line are required to have a strong background in probability theory with an emphasis on stochastic processes. "echoes": Machine Learning with Echo State Networks, a scikit-learn compatible package. The Physiological Acoustics Lab (http://escabilab.uconn.edu) at the University of Connecticut seeks applicants for a postdoctoral position in systems and computational neuroscience. We are seeking highly motivated and creative applicants that can lead a project on perception and neural coding of speech and vocalizations in the presence of competing natural environmental noises (e.g., restaurant noise, busy street, construction noise etc.). The broad project goal is to study the neural basis for listening in noisy environments and to devise a general computational theory that accounts for perception and physiology. The project will use a variety of experimental approaches including human perception, awake animal electrophysiology, large scale neural recording, and computational modeling. UConn has a vibrant neuroscience community and there are opportunities for collaboration between departments and institutes. The primary appointment is in Biomedical Engineering, but the work will be conducted in collaboration with the Behavioral Neuroscience division in the Psychology department (Statistical Neuroscience Lab, http://stevenson.lab.uconn.edu; Sensory Perception and Neuroscience Lab, http://read.lab.uconn.edu) as well as Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. On the other hand, recent Deep Learning development of Natural Language Processing (NLP) models allow to capture increasing language complexity (e.g. compositional representations, word embedding, long term dependencies). However, those NLP models are disembodied in the sense that they are learned from static datasets of text or speech. How can we bridge the gap from low-level sensorimotor interaction to high-level compositional symbolic communication? The Institute for Neural Computation of the Faculty of Computer Science is looking for a Postdoc (m,f,x) for 2 years, full-time, TVL E13 The Institute for Neural Computation is part of the Faculty of Computer Science at the Ruhr-University Bochum, see https://www.ini.rub.de/. The Computational Neuroscience unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (https://www.oist.jp) Japan has been spearheading nanoscale stochastic modeling of astrocytes, neurons and synapses (https://groups.oist.jp/cnu) We have two postdoctoral positions open and Japan is finally issuing visa again. The selected candidates will build on previous work in modeling of cerebellar or hippocampal astrocytes, neurons and synapses using our STEPS software (http://steps.sourceforge.net) research project depending on experience and interests of the candidate. Previous experience in neural modeling required, preferentially as subject of PhD. Competences: A recent PhD in a relevant discipline such as neuroscience, molecular biology, biophysics or biochemistry. Experience in programming in Python. Fluent English conversation and writing skills. Benefits / Offer: A competitive salary and relocation package are offered. This an ideal position to gain experience in a prominent computational neuroscience lab and take part in our international collaborations.
