Dear Computational Neuroscience Community, I would like to point you to a potentially useful Python Package that might be of interest for your research, especially in the realm dynamical models and spreading dynamics on networks. "ser": S(usceptible)E(xcited)R(efractory) model on graphs, a dynamical model of spreading excitations. Code Repository: https://github.com/fabridamicelli/ser As of today, a few people already trust it and the package registers >11K total downloads, ~500/month (pypi.org) and has been used already in a few research projects. A few interesting features: - It is light-weight and fast (`numba` accelerated), i.e. many experiments can be simply run on a laptop - Installation and getting started is easy: `pip install ser` - Example notebooks: https://github.com/fabridamicelli/ser/blob/main/examples The SER model is a classical cellular automaton model used to study all sorts of complex systems, ranging from forest fire dynamics to self-organized criticality in the brain. Despite of the simplicity of its setup, it is capable of generating complex emergent dynamics with absolutely non-trivial higher-order statistical properties. The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is a research institution with a Ph.D. program. Outstanding graduate students and faculty are being attracted internationally. OIST is beautifully situated on the tropical island of Okinawa, Japan. About the Project This scholarship will support the PhD candidate to carry out frontier research in Developmental Neurorobotics, a combination of Neuromorphic Computing and Cognitive Developmental Robotics. The PhD candidate will work with the Professor Alessandro Di Nuovo and his team, who have been awarded funding by the EPSRC for his research in the field. We are looking for an outstanding student to work with the team of a new EPSRC project. The research will pioneer the new developmental neuromorphic paradigm, which will be a synergic combination that will go beyond the limitations of the individual paradigms: neuromorphic computing will provide efficient brain-like resources able to process a more accurate representation of the real world, meanwhile developmental robotics will deliver the missing learning mechanisms for complex applications of neuromorphic spiking neural networks. The short-term objective is to demonstrate feasibility and lay the foundation of a biologically plausible framework to simulate the human-like learning process of numerical and abstract cognition, a fundamental characteristic of human intelligence. The team long-term goal is to create an artificial mind for robots that 'grows up' like a child's brain. This will be underpinned by neuromorphic computing which emulates the deep-lying architecture of the brain and will allow it to interpret and adapt to situations. As well as enabling the creation of robots with a human-like ability to reason, behave and interact the creation of an artificial mind will boost research in life sciences disciplines such as neuroscience by allowing researchers to run biologically realistic simulations to test theories. Dear comp-neuro subscriber, I am glad to announce that the comp-neuro mailing list has moved to a new home. This was necessary because the previous set-up became increasingly hard to maintain since I left the University of Antwerp. As a consequence it became difficult for aspirant members to subscribe and mails were sometimes delayed. The mailing list has now moved to a cloud based home and runs a more recent version of the software. I expect this will provide a stable solution with a better service. Appropriately, it is now managed by the Organization for Computational Neurosciences. Please encourage your colleagues, collaborators, students, etc who are not member yet to subscribe to comp-neuro, now that the website works again. Krichmar Neurorobotics is an interdisciplinary field that draws on artificial intelligence, cognitive sciences, computer science, engineering, psychology, neuroscience, and robotics. Because the brain is closely coupled to the body and situated in the environment, neurorobots—autonomous systems modeled after some aspect of the brain—offer a powerful tool for studying neural function and may also be a means for developing autonomous systems with intelligence that rivals that of biological organisms. This textbook introduces approaches and design principles for developing intelligent autonomous systems grounded in biology and neuroscience. It is written for anyone interested in learning about this topic and can be used in cognitive robotics courses for students in psychology, cognitive science, and computer science. Neurorobotics covers the background and foundations of the field, with information on early neurorobots, relevant principles of neuroscience, learning rules and mechanisms, and reinforcement learning and prediction; neurorobot design principles grounded in neuroscience and principles of neuroscience research; and examples of neurorobots for navigation, developmental robotics, and social robots, presented with the cognitive science and neuroscience background that inspired them. The Computational Neurophysics lab at the University of Bremen headed by Dr. Udo Ernst offers - under the condition of job release - at the earliest possible date a position until 30.09.2024: *Research Assistant in Computational Neuroscience (f/m/d)* German federal pay scale E13 TV-L (65 %) for the research project *I-See2 - Improving Intracortical Visual Prostheses Using Complex Coding and Spontaneous Activation States* The lives of many individuals are strongly impaired by missing the sense of vision. One putative option to help them are cortical prostheses. Such devices record images from our environment, encode this information into the 'language' of the brain, and stimulate neuron populations in the visual system for creating a corresponding percept. I-See2 (www.isee.uni-bremen.de) investigates new principles for building cortical prostheses in an international group with researchers from Canada, Switzerland and Germany. Your position will be at the heart of the project in Bremen, where computational methods are developed and data from our partner labs comes together. You will perform modelling of visual information processing, analysis of data from electrophysiological multielectrode recordings and optical voltage imaging, and be involved in model-driven visual stimulus generation for animal and human experiments. Dear all, ---- please forward this call to potentially interested mentors in your network! --- INCF will apply to be a mentor organization in Google Summer of Code <https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/> for the 13th time running. Important: Interested mentors need to contact us on gsoc(a)incf.org as early as possible with a declaration of interest and a short summary of the intended project. The deadline for expressions of interest is January 10. Full project descriptions need to be submitted by January 17. We are calling for open source software development project ideas with some sort of neuro connection - fixes or extensions to big/broadly applicable or small/niche tools used by neuroscience researchers, efforts and initiatives in the broad field of computational neuroscience. If your project supports or implements INCF endorsed standards or best practices <https://www.incf.org/resources/sbps>, we especially encourage you to apply. NB: There have been some changes to the program in recent years. These are the conditions for the 2023 program: - Flexibility in project lengths: a project can run for a duration of 10-22 weeks. The standard length is 12 weeks, but projects can be planned for a longer duration at the start, and they can be extended (by the org admin) on request during the program. - Choice of project time commitment: a project can be one of two sizes, either large (350 h) or medium (175 h). Google will want to us to apply with a good mix of large and medium project sizes. To give us a good chance of achieving a good mix, everyone submitting at least two project ideas will be asked to include both half-time and full-time projects (or at least one flexible project where the duration can be either large or medium, to be decided by mentor and contributor). - Contributions are *open to students* AND to *beginners in open source* software development. The appointment is for four years, to start on July 1st, 2023. This position is part of a US-German Collaboration toward a biophysically principled network model of transcranial magnetic stimulation. The ideal candidate will have profound knowledge of numerical and computational methods for solving partial differential equations, excellent C++ programing skills and an interest in neuroscience/life science applications. The position also carries a teaching load of one class per semester.
