FLAIRS is an interdisciplinary artificial intelligence conference which especially encourages novel ideas and which features a double-blind review process. Data Mining Track This special track will be devoted to data mining with the aim of presenting new and important contributions in this area. 10ᵀᴴ Advanced Scientific Programming in Python ============================================== a Summer School by the G-Node and the Municipality of Sithonia Scientists spend more and more time writing, maintaining, and debugging software. While techniques for doing this efficiently have evolved, only few scientists have been trained to use them. As a result, instead of doing their research, they spend far too much time writing deficient code and reinventing the wheel. In this course we will present a selection of advanced programming techniques and best practices which are standard in the industry, but especially tailored to the needs of a programming scientist. Lectures are devised to be interactive and to give the students enough time to acquiredirect hands-on experience with the materials. Students will work in pairsthroughout the school and will team up to practice the newly learned skills in a real programming project — an entertaining computer game. We use the Python programming language for the entire course. Python works as a simple programming language for beginners, but more importantly, it also works great in scientific simulations and data analysis. We show how clean language design, ease of extensibility, and the great wealth of open source libraries for scientific computing and data visualization are driving Python to become a standard tool for the programming scientist. This school is targeted at Master or PhD students and Post-docs from all areas of science. Competence in Python or in another language such as Java, C/C++, MATLAB, or Mathematica is absolutely required. Basic knowledge of Python and of a version control system such as git, subversion, mercurial, or bazaar is assumed. Participants without any prior experience with Python and/or git should work through the proposed introductory material before the course. Funded PhD Position at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Genova (IT) - Cellular mechanisms of perception Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship in Neuroscience within the "Optical Approaches to Brain Function" laboratory (https://www.iit.it/lines/optical-approaches-to-brain-function) led by Tommaso Fellin and located at IIT in Genova (Italy). PhD Courses are established in agreement with Università degli Studi di Genova and financially supported by IIT. Project summary: The PhD project is entitled "Cellular mechanisms of perception" and focuses on the cellular mechanisms underlying the coding of sensory information in the mouse cortex. To tackle this question, experimental approaches including two-photon functional imaging, patch-clamp recordings and optogenetic manipulations will be coupled with advanced analytical approaches. For the positions we look for candidates with a M.Sc. degree in biology, physics, bioengineering or computer science with propensity for interdisciplinary research. Postdoctoral Research Position in Cognitive Neuroscience Department of Psychology, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee The Sensory Neuroscience, Attention, & Perception Laboratory (SNAP Lab) of Dr. Adam Greenberg is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to begin late Summer/early Fall 2017 (flexible start date). We study the neural mechanisms of attention and perception in humans using a large range of cognitive neuroscience tools including neuroimaging (fMRI, diffusion imaging), TMS, computational modeling, and neuropsychological methods. This fully funded position was created to coincide with multiple grant-funded studies of visual/auditory attention in both normal volunteers and cancer patients. Thus, a wide range of specific projects are possible along with the possibility of writing manuscripts on existing data. New project development is also strongly encouraged. Successful candidates will have a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, etc.), should be highly motivated, and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Experience with TMS is especially desirable, as is a strong background in attention and perception. Experience with other techniques used in the lab are welcome but not required. Proficiency in programming/scripting (e.g., MATLAB, Linux shells) is necessary. Initial appointment will be full-time for one year, with renewal contingent upon productivity. UW-Milwaukee is an R1 (Carnegie Classification) public, urban research university. [Apologies for cross-posting] Dear Colleagues, I write to announce an upcoming workshop: HBP Hippocamp 2017: Collaborative and Integrative Modeling of Hippocampus to be held May 23rd -24th at the European Institute for Theoretical Neuroscience (EITN) in Paris, France , supported by the Human Brain Project ( [ http://www.humanbrainproject.eu/ | www.humanbrainproject.eu ] ). In short, the objective of the workshop is to highlight existing modeling efforts and strategic datasets for modeling the hippocampus, and define a common integrative and collaborative modeling target including HBP and community stakeholders. The ultimate aim is to catalyze an inclusive community-driven integration and release process for open pre-competitive reference models of hippocampus which are well documented and validated (supported in part by IT infrastructure funded by HBP). Involvement from the community interested in models of hippocampus is highly encouraged. Project Synopsis: This proposed PhD work follows high profile research by the University of Birmingham team (Prof. Kim Shapiro, Prof. Howard Bowman and Mr Ali Mazaheri). The project is collaborative work between Birmingham City University (Dr Eirini Mavritsaki) and University of Birmingham (Prof. Kim Shapiro and Prof. Howard Bowman). The University of Birmingham team has access to ERP data of a semantic anomaly and word repetition task (Olichney et al, 2002). In the original analysis of the data by Olichney and colleagues, the N400 component was analysed, which is related to semantic manipulation. Olichney and colleagues found evidence of N400 abnormalities in mild cognitive impairment patients, which predicted later progression to Alzhemier’s. The University of Birmingham team have identified oscillatory changes that also predict progression to Alzheimer’s, opening up the possibility that an effective EEG-based early-stage biomarker of Alzheimer’s might be within reach. We plan to simulate this data and the changes observed in it using a computational model that is based on the sSoTS (Mavritsaki, Heinke, Humphreys and Deco, 2011) model. The successful applicant will join the Centre for Applied Psychological Research (CAPresearch) within the Department of Psychology at Birmingham City University. Project Synopsis: There are many limitations on the behaviour of complex neural systems, but one primary constraint is to filter incoming input in order that actions can be programmed to behaviourally relevant stimuli. A major challenge for current-day researchers is to understand how (and why) these limitations arise, especially in conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) where the attentional system is dysfunctional. The main aim of this project is to identify and understand the differences in visual attention between children diagnosed with ADHD and typically functioning children. In addition, to investigate the role of diet in ADHD. This Ph.D. thesis aims to do this by using a novel interdisciplinary approach, behavioural and computational modelling study. The student can choose to work in both or just one approach (either computational or behavioural work). Each symposium must be focused on a single topic and will include 3 oral presentations of 20 minutes (+ 5 minutes questions) organized by a chairperson, who can also be a presenter. There can be 4 oral presentations if preferred, but the total duration of the symposium should not exceed 1 hour and 15 minutes. The chairperson is responsible for submitting the symposium proposal and for recruitingspeakers. Symposia on current topics and of a multidisciplinary nature are encouraged. Symposium proposals should include the following: 1. The name, contact information, and affiliation of the symposium chairperson. 2. Title 3. The Language in Interaction research consortium, sponsored by a large grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), brings together many of the excellent research groups in the Netherlands with a research programme on the foundations of language. In addition to excellence in the domain of language and related relevant fields of cognition, our consortium provides state-of-the-art research facilities and a research team with ample experience in the complex research methods that will be invoked to address the scientific questions at the highest level of methodological sophistication. These include methods from genetics, neuroimaging, computational modelling, and patient-related research. This consortium realises both quality and critical mass for studying human language at a scale not easily found anywhere else. We have identified five Big Questions (BQ) that are central to our understanding of the human language faculty. These questions are interrelated at multiple levels. Teams of researchers will collaborate to collectively address these key questions of our field. Our five Big Questions are: BQ1: The nature of the mental lexicon: How to bridge neurobiology and psycholinguistic theory by computational modelling? BQ2: What are the characteristics and consequences of internal brain organization for language? BQ3: Creating a shared cognitive space: How is language grounded in and shaped by communicative settings of interacting people? BQ4: Variability in language processing and in language learning: Why does the ability to learn language change with age? How can we characterise and map individual language skills in relation to the population distribution? BQ5: How are other cognitive systems shaped by the presence of a language system in humans? Postdoctoral position in visuomotor control of catching and throwing – Rome, Italy ** A postdoctoral position is available in the group led by Prof. Andrea d’Avella (a.davella(a)hsantalucia.it) in the Laboratory of Neuromotor Physiology directed by Prof. Francesco Lacquaniti, at the Santa Lucia Foundation in Rome, Italy. The researcher will be involved in ongoing studies performed under the interdisciplinary project CogIMon, funded by the H2020 program of the European Union. The project CogIMon aims at a step change in human-robot interaction, and comprises leading robotics, computational neuroscience, and human motor control European research groups. Research will be focused on investigating strategies for prediction, coordination, and control during interactive human-human and human-robot catching and throwing. Experiments are conducted with real balls in a large motion capture setup and with virtual balls in an immersive multisensory virtual environment where ball impact is rendered with a haptic device, and human and robotic agents are simulated. Applicants should have a PhD degree in a relevant discipline, a real interest in human sensorimotor control, and strong quantitative and programming skills. Experience with collection and analysis of experimental data, psychophysics in virtual environments, computer graphics and avatar animation are valuable assets. The **First International Workshop on Grounding Language Understanding (GLU 2017)** will be held at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, on August 25, 2017. http://www.speech.kth.se/glu2017/ The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers from different disciplines (linguistics, language, robotics, systems neuroscience, cognitive science, signal processing, etc.) working with modeling different aspects of grounding language acquisition and understanding. Although speech and language technology have reached a level of maturity, machines still fall short of human performance, especially when considering flexibility and robustness. It is therefore desirable to extend the machine learning approach which has been applied to speech and language technology, and emulate more closely the way humans and living systems acquire language. Postdoctoral position on modelling and neural analysis of flexible perceptual decision-making at IDIBAPS / UPF (Barcelona)

A postdoctoral research position in computational neuroscience is available to work with Jaime de la Rocha at IDIBAPS (Barcelona) and Alexandre Hyafil at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona). The postdoctoral fellow will be a vital member of the interdisciplinary research team led by Jaime de la Rocha that studies perception and cognition using combined theoretical and experimental approaches. More specifically, the fellow's work will be part of an ERC-funded project aiming to unravel the behavioural principles and the neural mechanisms underlying how recent experience shapes perception and guides decisions. The fellow will (1) characterize the behavioural influence of recent history onto perceptual choices in rats and humans performing acoustic discrimination tasks, (2) analyze population recordings from cortical neurons obtained from rats to uncover the traces of recent history decision biases and (3) build dynamical models of behaviour based on the population recordings using a variety of machine learning tools. Behavioural and neural data is currently being acquired by other researchers in the lab. The work will be co-supervised between Jaime de la Rocha, head of the Cortical Circuit Dynamics Group (http://neuro.fcrb.es/delaRochaLab/) and Alexandre Hyafil who is establishing his new laboratory in the nearby UPF, and has in the last years develop a set analysis techniques fitted for our data. Both groups are part of the vibrant computational neuroscience community of Barcelona, which promotes the interaction among groups by organizing multiple internal activities. Applicants should have a strong background in computational neuroscience or applied mathematics and have a keen interest in interdisciplinary approaches that integrate modeling and experimental research. Programming proficiency (Matlab and/or Python) is required. Experience in machine learning methods, advanced statistics as well as nonlinear dynamical systems will be valued. We are seeking a Scientist to be an essential team member in our ongoing efforts to investigate how the brain extracts and processes information. The core responsibility for this position will be the analysis of neural activity recorded in high-throughput electrophysiological and optophysiological experiments, as well as in large-scale, realistic simulations of the cortex. The major focus will be on characterizing detailed circuits in the visual cortex of the mouse, with a particular emphasis on bridging experimental and modeling work in a team setting. Job Responsibilities: * In a close collaboration between experimentalists and modelers, work as a team member to analyze massive amounts of multimodal data representing visual responses in the cortex. * Develop and maintain analysis techniques and associated software tools, and contribute scientific ideas based on the analysis results. * Work closely with other team members to gain insights on the structure-function relationships in the specific cortical circuits investigated in depth via experiments and modeling. * Publish/present findings in peer-reviewed journals/scientific conferences. * Present a periodic summary of progress to the research community in the organization. Call for Participation: UCL Medical Image Computing Summer School (MedICSS) - 03-07 July 2017

Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce the 3rd edition of University College London (UCL) Medical Image Computing Summer School (MedICSS) which will be between the 3rd and 7th of July this year. UCL MedICSS aims to offer young researchers from the international community an exciting opportunity to engage with world-renowned experts in a diverse range of medical image computing topics and learn about the state-of-the-art in the field. Overall, there is a strong neuroimaging theme. The programme will blend lectures by scientific and clinical leaders, with activity-based learning, such as interactive breakout sessions, to foster interaction among the participants and promote critical thinking and scientific discovery. A limited number of scholarships, to cover the registration fee, will be offered based on the submission of a CV and personal statement. The deadline for scholarship applicants is the 1st May 2017, and the final application deadline is 2nd June 2017. However, spaces are limited, so registration will close when the spaces are filled. PhD studentship in EEG dynamics and dementia - Newcastle (UK)

A PhD position is available at the Institute of Neuroscience, Newcastle University (Newcastle upon Tyne, UK). The project will investigate the utility of quantitative EEG as a confirmatory biomarker of dementia with Lewy bodies versus Alzheimer's disease, and will also include multimodal neuroimaging with DTI and MRI. This is a 3-year PhD funded by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Newcastle University. You will contribute to the integration of empirical research in our consortium. You will act in close collaboration with Peter Hagoort, programme director of the consortium. This position provides the opportunity for conducting world-class research as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Moreover, it will provide the opportunity to contribute to developing a theoretical framework for our understanding of the human language faculty. Work environment The Netherlands has an outstanding track record in the language sciences. The Language in Interaction research consortium, which is sponsored by a large grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific research (NWO), brings together many of the excellent research groups in the Netherlands in a research programme on the foundations of language. In addition to excellence in the domain of language and related relevant fields of cognition, our consortium provides state-of-the-art research facilities and a research team with ample experience in the complex research methods that will be invoked to address the scientific questions at the highest level of methodological sophistication. These include methods from genetics, neuroimaging, computational modelling, and patient-related research. This consortium realises both quality and critical mass for studying human language at a scale not easily found anywhere else. We have identified five Big Questions (BQ) that are central to our understanding of the human language faculty. These questions are interrelated at multiple levels. Teams of researchers will collaborate to collectively address these key questions of our field. Our five Big Questions are: BQ1: The nature of the mental lexicon: How to bridge neurobiology and psycholinguistic theory by computational modelling? BQ2: What are the characteristics and consequences of internal brain organization for language? BQ3: Creating a shared cognitive space: How is language grounded in and shaped by communicative settings of interacting people? BQ4: Variability in language processing and in language learning: Why does the ability to learn language change with age? How can we characterise and map individual language skills in relation to the population distribution? BQ5: How are other cognitive systems shaped by the presence of a language system in humans? You will be appointed at the Donders Institute, Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging (Radboud University, Nijmegen). The research is conducted in an international setting at all participating institutions. English is the lingua franca. What we expect from you We are looking for a highly motivated, creative and talented candidate to enrich a unique consortium of researchers that aims to unravel the neurocognitive mechanisms of language at multiple levels. The goal is to understand both the universality and the variability of the human language faculty from genes to behaviour. We are looking for a highly motivated, creative and talented researcher who is able to establish a PI group on 'the neural basis of language'. This year's NEURON Summer Course is starting to fill up, so you should act soon if you are interested in taking it. The course runs from Monday, June 5, through Saturday, June 10, and will be held at Wright State University in Fairborn, Ohio. It will present a thorough introduction to computational modeling of neurons and networks with NEURON, and is suitable for individuals at all levels of expertise. In order to provide expanded coverage of parallel simulation, and to give participants more time for active learning exercises, we have increased the course duration to 6 days (5 in previous years). Space is limited, and applications will be considered in the order received. PhD in Computational Neuroscience at the University of Exeter (fully funded) ***Closes in 4 days*** 3.5 year college funded PhD Studentship in Computational Neuroscience: *Neural dynamics of perceptual competition * Ref: 2589 Open to UK, EU and International students with maintenance (£14,296 per year) and tuition fees fully funded http://www.exeter.ac.uk/studying/funding/award/?id=2589 This interdisciplinary project will use mathematical modelling, in conjunction with psychophysics (human perception experiments), to better understand the neural competition underpinning the dynamics of perception. Ambiguity in fixed sensory stimuli can lead to spontaneous switches in perception, both in vision, e.g. binocular rivalry, Necker cube, and audition, e.g. auditory streaming (switches between grouped or segregated interpretations of tone sequences). A set of common characteristics (inevitability of perceptual changes, exclusivity between the competing percepts, and randomness in the percept durations), generalise across sensory modalities. The neural competition driving these perceptual switches has been successfully modelled in small networks of Wilson-Cowan (firing rate) units, each associated with the different perceptual interpretations. For certain stimuli, where competition takes place across a continuous feature space (say, visual orientation, motion direction, or auditory pitch), a continuum model, such as the neural field equation can be applied. This PhD project will involve the derivation of perceptual competition models in a dynamical systems framework, based on plausible neural mechanisms commonly found in sensory cortex. Modelling hypotheses and predictions will be tested against experimental data collected in our lab or from collaborators. On the modelling side, tools from bifurcation analysis including numerical continuation will be applied to investigate dynamics. The project will be flexible in terms of the balance between modelling and experiments. Candidates with quantitative backgrounds (mathematics, physics, and engineering) and from neuroscience or psychology programmes are encouraged to apply. NeuroMorpho.Org v7.0 [10th anniversary edition] released September 1st, 2016

Dear colleagues, We're excited to announce that almost exactly 10 years after the original launch, NeuroMorpho.Org passed the milestone of 50,000 reconstructions in the September 1, 2016 release of Version 7.0. This major update includes 12,693 additional reconstructions from 35 new datasets. The new data added in these last 6 months equal the total amount accumulated in the first seven years. This release also introduce several new functionalities, including (1) bibliography documenting data re-use from nearly 500 citations; (2) ontology-smart searches by species, brain regions, neuron types, and experimental conditions; (3) DOI minting capability for each article-associated dataset; and (4) API enabling object-oriented access to data and metadata. The literature coverage database was also updated to include publications through August 2016.
