FLAIRS is an interdisciplinary artificial intelligence conference which especially encourages novel ideas and which features a double-blind review process. Data Mining Track This special track will be devoted to data mining with the aim of presenting new and important contributions in this area. Papers and contributions are encouraged for any work related to Data Mining. Topics of interest may include (but are in no way limited to): 1. 10ᵀᴴ Advanced Scientific Programming in Python ============================================== a Summer School by the G-Node and the Municipality of Sithonia Scientists spend more and more time writing, maintaining, and debugging software. While techniques for doing this efficiently have evolved, only few scientists have been trained to use them. As a result, instead of doing their research, they spend far too much time writing deficient code and reinventing the wheel. In this course we will present a selection of advanced programming techniques and best practices which are standard in the industry, but especially tailored to the needs of a programming scientist. Lectures are devised to be interactive and to give the students enough time to acquiredirect hands-on experience with the materials. Students will work in pairsthroughout the school and will team up to practice the newly learned skills in a real programming project — an entertaining computer game. We use the Python programming language for the entire course. Python works as a simple programming language for beginners, but more importantly, it also works great in scientific simulations and data analysis. We show how clean language design, ease of extensibility, and the great wealth of open source libraries for scientific computing and data visualization are driving Python to become a standard tool for the programming scientist. This school is targeted at Master or PhD students and Post-docs from all areas of science. Competence in Python or in another language such as Java, C/C++, MATLAB, or Mathematica is absolutely required. Basic knowledge of Python and of a version control system such as git, subversion, mercurial, or bazaar is assumed. Participants without any prior experience with Python and/or git should work through the proposed introductory material before the course. Funded PhD Position at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Genova (IT) - Cellular mechanisms of perception Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship in Neuroscience within the "Optical Approaches to Brain Function" laboratory (https://www.iit.it/lines/optical-approaches-to-brain-function) led by Tommaso Fellin and located at IIT in Genova (Italy). PhD Courses are established in agreement with Università degli Studi di Genova and financially supported by IIT. Project summary: The PhD project is entitled "Cellular mechanisms of perception" and focuses on the cellular mechanisms underlying the coding of sensory information in the mouse cortex. To tackle this question, experimental approaches including two-photon functional imaging, patch-clamp recordings and optogenetic manipulations will be coupled with advanced analytical approaches. For the positions we look for candidates with a M.Sc. degree in biology, physics, bioengineering or computer science with propensity for interdisciplinary research. Applicants should have strong interest in both physiological approaches to monitor/manipulate cortical microcircuits and mathematical methods to describe and model neural networks. BBP - Postdoctoral Position in Molecular Neuron and Synapse Modeling A post-doctoral position in modeling of molecular synapses and neurons is available at the Blue Brain Project at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland (www.epfl.ch) The Blue Brain Project, based in Geneva, Switzerland, performs large-scale simulations of the brain. The successful candidate will join our efforts to advance neuromorphic pattern recognition on the SpiNNaker and BrainScaleS hardware systems that are built within the Human Brain Project (HBP). We are looking for a candidate with a keen tenacity in pushing forward the boundaries of future computing off the well-trodden path. The Biocomputation group provides a rich and inspiring interdisciplinary research environment that connects Computer Science with Neuroscience and branches out into Machine Learning and Robotics. HBP membership provides excellent opportunities to connect to world-leading scientists in all aspects of neuroscience, high-performance computing, neurorobotics and neuromorphic engineering. Postdoctoral Research Position in Cognitive Neuroscience Department of Psychology, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee The Sensory Neuroscience, Attention, & Perception Laboratory (SNAP Lab) of Dr. Adam Greenberg is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to begin late Summer/early Fall 2017 (flexible start date). We study the neural mechanisms of attention and perception in humans using a large range of cognitive neuroscience tools including neuroimaging (fMRI, diffusion imaging), TMS, computational modeling, and neuropsychological methods. This fully funded position was created to coincide with multiple grant-funded studies of visual/auditory attention in both normal volunteers and cancer patients. Thus, a wide range of specific projects are possible along with the possibility of writing manuscripts on existing data. New project development is also strongly encouraged. Successful candidates will have a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, etc.), should be highly motivated, and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Experience with TMS is especially desirable, as is a strong background in attention and perception. Experience with other techniques used in the lab are welcome but not required. Proficiency in programming/scripting (e.g., MATLAB, Linux shells) is necessary. Initial appointment will be full-time for one year, with renewal contingent upon productivity. UW-Milwaukee is an R1 (Carnegie Classification) public, urban research university. Workshop announcement: HBP Hippocamp 2017

[Apologies for cross-posting] Dear Colleagues, I write to announce an upcoming workshop: HBP Hippocamp 2017: Collaborative and Integrative Modeling of Hippocampus to be held May 23rd -24th at the European Institute for Theoretical Neuroscience (EITN) in Paris, France , supported by the Human Brain Project ( [ http://www.humanbrainproject.eu/ | www.humanbrainproject.eu ] ). In short, the objective of the workshop is to highlight existing modeling efforts and strategic datasets for modeling the hippocampus, and define a common integrative and collaborative modeling target including HBP and community stakeholders. The ultimate aim is to catalyze an inclusive community-driven integration and release process for open pre-competitive reference models of hippocampus which are well documented and validated (supported in part by IT infrastructure funded by HBP). Involvement from the community interested in models of hippocampus is highly encouraged. Project Synopsis: This proposed PhD work follows high profile research by the University of Birmingham team (Prof. Kim Shapiro, Prof. Howard Bowman and Mr Ali Mazaheri). The project is collaborative work between Birmingham City University (Dr Eirini Mavritsaki) and University of Birmingham (Prof. Kim Shapiro and Prof. Howard Bowman). The University of Birmingham team has access to ERP data of a semantic anomaly and word repetition task (Olichney et al, 2002). In the original analysis of the data by Olichney and colleagues, the N400 component was analysed, which is related to semantic manipulation. Olichney and colleagues found evidence of N400 abnormalities in mild cognitive impairment patients, which predicted later progression to Alzhemier’s. The University of Birmingham team have identified oscillatory changes that also predict progression to Alzheimer’s, opening up the possibility that an effective EEG-based early-stage biomarker of Alzheimer’s might be within reach. We plan to simulate this data and the changes observed in it using a computational model that is based on the sSoTS (Mavritsaki, Heinke, Humphreys and Deco, 2011) model. The successful applicant will join the Centre for Applied Psychological Research (CAPresearch) within the Department of Psychology at Birmingham City University. Project Synopsis: There are many limitations on the behaviour of complex neural systems, but one primary constraint is to filter incoming input in order that actions can be programmed to behaviourally relevant stimuli. A major challenge for current-day researchers is to understand how (and why) these limitations arise, especially in conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) where the attentional system is dysfunctional. The main aim of this project is to identify and understand the differences in visual attention between children diagnosed with ADHD and typically functioning children. In addition, to investigate the role of diet in ADHD. This Ph.D. thesis aims to do this by using a novel interdisciplinary approach, behavioural and computational modelling study. The student can choose to work in both or just one approach (either computational or behavioural work). In addition to excellence in the domain of language and related relevant fields of cognition, our consortium provides state-of-the-art research facilities and a research team with ample experience in the complex research methods that will be invoked to address the scientific questions at the highest level of methodological sophistication. These include methods from genetics, neuroimaging, computational modelling, and patient-related research. This consortium realises both quality and critical mass for studying human language at a scale not easily found anywhere else. We have identified five Big Questions (BQ) that are central to our understanding of the human language faculty. These questions are interrelated at multiple levels. Teams of researchers will collaborate to collectively address these key questions of our field. Our five Big Questions are: BQ1: The nature of the mental lexicon: How to bridge neurobiology and psycholinguistic theory by computational modelling? BQ2: What are the characteristics and consequences of internal brain organization for language? BQ3: Creating a shared cognitive space: How is language grounded in and shaped by communicative settings of interacting people? BQ4: Variability in language processing and in language learning: Why does the ability to learn language change with age? The researcher will be involved in ongoing studies performed under the interdisciplinary project CogIMon, funded by the H2020 program of the European Union. The project CogIMon aims at a step change in human-robot interaction, and comprises leading robotics, computational neuroscience, and human motor control European research groups. Research will be focused on investigating strategies for prediction, coordination, and control during interactive human-human and human-robot catching and throwing. Experiments are conducted with real balls in a large motion capture setup and with virtual balls in an immersive multisensory virtual environment where ball impact is rendered with a haptic device, and human and robotic agents are simulated. Applicants should have a PhD degree in a relevant discipline, a real interest in human sensorimotor control, and strong quantitative and programming skills. Experience with collection and analysis of experimental data, psychophysics in virtual environments, computer graphics and avatar animation are valuable assets. The **First International Workshop on Grounding Language Understanding (GLU 2017)** will be held at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, on August 25, 2017. http://www.speech.kth.se/glu2017/ The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers from different disciplines (linguistics, language, robotics, systems neuroscience, cognitive science, signal processing, etc.) working with modeling different aspects of grounding language acquisition and understanding. Although speech and language technology have reached a level of maturity, machines still fall short of human performance, especially when considering flexibility and robustness. It is therefore desirable to extend the machine learning approach which has been applied to speech and language technology, and emulate more closely the way humans and living systems acquire language. Desirable properties of the new learning approaches would include: * being less dependent on annotated data, * acquiring knowledge from multimodal inputs (acoustic, visual, tactile), * learning from interaction, * relating learning to the situational context, * grounding language in the perceptual, emotional and sensorimotor experience of the agent This requires a highly multidisciplinary approach, combining the field of human language processing, speech technology, machine learning, developmental robotics and cognitive and systems neuroscience. We are seeking candidates for a fully funded PhD position at the Italian Institute of Technology’s Neural Computation Laboratory ( http://cncs.iit.it/labs/neural-computation ) directed by Stefano Panzeri and located in Rovereto (Trento), Italy. IIT collaborates with Università degli studi di Trento and finances these positions at the PhD course in Cognitive and Brain Sciences. We are currently seeking several PhD students and postdocs to collaborate on a project funded by Ghent University, called “Connections for cognition: A cognitive neurocomputational perspective on human flexibility”. The aim of the project is to study how connections between brain areas can be flexibly recruited for the implementation of working memory and cognitive control. Dear colleagues, A PhD/postdoc position in the area of hybrid neuromorphic systems is available at the Cognitronics and Sensor Systems Group ( http://www.ks.cit-ec.uni-bielefeld.de) Center of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology at Bielefeld University. Combining concepts from biology, physics, electrical engineering and computer science, the research will focus on new methods for the development of hybrid systems, coupling living neurons and neuromorphic systems. In close cooperation with researchers from the different domains you will assist in establishing a new collaborative research group targeting hybrid neuromorphic systems. Tasks include the analysis of new methods for electrode/neuron interfacing, evaluation of the energy efficiency of living cells, and the realization of small neural networks based on memristors. In addition to research, 20% of the position is dedicated to teaching in the respective areas. For the positions we look for candidates with a M.Sc. degree in computer science, electrical engineering, physics, or biology with a technical focus and a PhD or significant experience in one of the areas neuromorphic systems, nanoelectronics, neurobiology, or biological cybernetics.
