Progresses in neural recordings technology enable scientists to monitor the activity of larger and larger number of neurons, but it is still unclear how to analyze these data to understand how groups of neurons work together. The successful candidate will develop and use tools for the analysis of large-scale simultaneous recordings of the spiking activity of cells in the cortex to understand how populations of neurons carry information. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to both develop new advanced methods and to analyze experimental data in collaboration with many experimental neuroscience laboratories. The applicant should have a strong background in numerate sciences, and have a strong propensity for interdisciplinary research. No extensive previous experience in neuroscience is needed. The project is focusing on developmental robotic learning based on an iCub humanoid robot. This is a three year EPSRC funded project running at Aberystwyth University started March 2015, with the support of an International Scientific Advisory Board consisting of leading developmental psychologists. We wish to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Associate who will develop models based on the psychological literature, and conduct experiments on our iCub humanoid robot. The successful candidate will have appropriate modelling skills and experience, and proven abilities in this area. Other tasks include writing scientific documents and papers, documenting experiments and writing reports, supervising a PhD student and collaborating with other researchers. Two positions at Boston Univ: 1.) Neural data analysis & 2.) Modeling cortical cognitive function

Two positions are available in the Hasselmo laboratory in the Center for Systems Neuroscience at Boston University focused on: 1.) Analysis of neurophysiological data, and 2.) Computational modeling of cortical cognitive function. Each position could be hired as either a pre-doctoral staff position or a post-doctoral research position. 1. ANALYSIS OF NEUROPHYSIOLOGICAL DATA. This position involves working with multiple ongoing neurophysiological research projects, including unit and field potential recording in awake behaving rodents, and whole cell patch recording in brain slice preparations. The ideal candidate will be able to balance research projects efficiently and work closely with others in the lab. Interest in neuroscience and background in engineering or mathematics is preferred. Experience with scientific data analysis and signal processing is essential. Programming proficiency is required. Languages of use include: MATLAB, Python, Unix, C++, MySQL, though experience is not required in each. Experience with machine learning, computational modeling, and biomedical recording hardware/software is desirable. Responsibilities: • Develop and maintain standardized analysis procedures and toolboxes for multiple experimental paradigms. • Develop software for interfacing with experimental equipment, as required. • Assist on experimental design and statistical analyses of data • Develop processing procedures for non-standard data • Compare and fit experimental results to biologically structured models. • Prepare written presentations of results • Maintain a uniform data flow and backup procedure across researchers. • Maintain and utilize MySQL databases. 2. COMPUTATIONAL MODELING OF CORTICAL COGNITIVE FUNCTION. This position involves development of cortical circuit models of cognitive function with a particular emphasis on the prefrontal cortex, building on previous research including work in the Hasselmo laboratory at Boston University. The ideal candidate will have previous experience with development of neural circuit models of the role of neocortical structures in symbolic processing and cognitive function, with programming proficiency in languages such as MATLAB and/or Python. Responsibilities: • Develop and maintain cognitive model of cortical function using neurons at different levels of detail. • Simulate behavioral function in a range of cognitive tasks. • Assist on design of experiments using fMRI and unit recording in non-human primates. • Compare and fit experimental results to biologically structured models. • Prepare written presentations of models and experimental data. This year the conference is organized by the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Berlin at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The main conference (Sep 21-23, 2016) will be accompanied by satellite workshops (Sep 20-21, 2016) and a PhD symposium (Sep 23-24, 2016). An important part of the main conference will be the two poster sessions. We are now inviting the submission of abstracts from all relevant areas. Authors of most accepted abstracts will get the chance for a poster presentation, a small number of abstracts will be selected for contributed talks during the main conference. The goal of the project is to develop and implement a new technique of source localization of specific events in neural activity, such as a seizure, from multimodal imaging data, including ECoG (strip and grid electrodes), depth electrophysiological recordings, and MRI data from humans. The method will be validated with ground truth model data and tested on clinical data obtained from epilepsy patients. The fellow will build on already existing tools and techniques developed in the lab, see especially Potworowski et al. 2012 and Ness et al. 2015. Dear Colleagues! The computational neuroscience group at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences is currently recruiting one postdoctoral-level researcher and one scientific software developer as part of our large-scale neuronal network simulator development efforts in the Human Brain Project (HBP). Our group is responsible for four tasks in the next phase of the HBP: - Massively parallel methods for network construction from rules and data - Whole brain level in silico instrumentation, services and apps - Models of brain signals - Simulator NEST as a Service Your work will focus on the first two tasks, researching concepts required to compactly specify brain-scale neuronal networks so that they are easy for the neuroscientist to review, and at the same time can be instantiated efficiently in a massively parallel fashion. You will further work on concepts that will allow domain specialists to configure complete in silico experiments on point-neuron-based whole-brain models by connecting stimulation and recording devices to specific neuron populations. We will collaborate closely with colleagues within the HBP, especially at the Institute for Neuroscience and Medicine 6, Research Center Jülich (FZJ), at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), and at University of Oslo. Our group is a core member of the NEST Initiative. We have access to some of the world's largest supercomputers and aim to develop simulation technology that will scale to the exascale.
