Version 5.7 of NeuroMorpho.Org was released on 30 May, 2014. The release included 29 new data sets (1341 reconstructions), including from three new animal species (dragonfly, moth, and sheep). The database now contains 11,335 reconstructions from 144 contributing labs. More than 3.2 million reconstructions were downloaded in over 130,000 unique visits from 146 countries. Please visit the What's new<http://neuromorpho.org/neuroMorpho/WIN.jsp> page for details on data included in this release, including new species strains, brain regions, cell types, and experimental conditions. The Acknowledgements <http://neuromorpho.org/neuroMorpho/acknowl.jsp> include details on contributing labs, and the About<http://neuromorpho.org/neuroMorpho/about.jsp> page provides an updated overview of the repository content. One or more PhD positions in computational neuroscience are available in the Neural Reckoning Group of Dan Goodman at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Imperial College London. I am interested in supervising students with a strong mathematical, computational or neuroscience background. Projects could be carried out in several possible areas, including neuroinformatics (i.e simulation and analysis of neural data) or sensory neuroscience (e.g. spiking neural models in the auditory system). Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit, University College London 4 year PhD Programme The Gatsby Unit is a centre for theoretical neuroscience and machine learning, focusing on unsupervised, semi-supervised and reinforcement learning, neural dynamics, population coding, Bayesian and nonparametric statistics, kernel methods, and applications of these to the analysis of perceptual processing, neural data, machine vision and bioinformatics. It provides a unique opportunity for a critical mass of theoreticians to interact closely with each other, and with other world-class research groups in related departments at UCL, including the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour, with which we will shortly share a building, and Biosciences, Computer Science, Functional Imaging, Physics, Physiology, Psychology, Neurology, Ophthalmology and Statistics, the cross-faculty Centre for Computational Statistics and Machine Learning, and also with other UK and overseas universities. The Unit has openings for exceptional PhD candidates. Applications are invited for PhD studentships in the Biocomputation Research Group at the Science and Technology Research Institute at the University of Hertfordshire. PhD projects involve the development of computer simulations of neurons and neuronal networks to study information processing in the brain, and/or the application of machine learning techniques to analyse electrophysiological data. Previous experience in neuroscience is not required but would be an advantage. Successful candidates are eligible for a research studentship award from the University (approximately GBP 13,800 per annum bursary plus the payment of the standard UK student fees). Applicants from outside the UK or EU are eligible, but will have to pay half of the overseas fees out of their bursary. Up to 2 postdoctoral positions are available at the center for sleep and consciousness science in the laboratory of Dr. Giulio Tononi (University of Wisconsin, Madison), to study the relation of information and causation within the framework of the integrated information theory of consciousness (Balduzzi & Tononi, 2008; Tononi, 2012). Immediate funding is available for a range of projects related to foundational questions regarding the ontological status of information, and its relation to causation, emergence, adaptation, evolution, and consciousness (see detailed scope of work below). Successful candidates will work at the center for sleep and consciousness science, dedicated to a broad range of research problems focused on two neurobiological problems -- the mechanisms and functions of sleep and the neural substrates of consciousness. Candidates are expected to have strong training in an analytically rigorous discipline such as theoretical biology/neuroscience, physics, mathematics, computer science, or engineering. For at least one of the positions, we explicitely encourage mathematicians to apply. Experience in information theory, complex systems, and an interest in the philosophy of information/causation are a plus. Two postdoctoral/research associate positions in computational neuroscience at Drexel University College of Medicine Two postdoctoral/research associate positions in computational neuroscience for the duration of up to three years are available at Drexel University College of Medicine (Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience Lab of Dr. Ilya A. *4-year studentships available in the Imperial College EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Neurotechnology for Life and Health* *Ten fully-funded studentships are now available for start in October 2015. * Neurotechnology is the use of insights and tools from engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology to investigate neural function and treat dysfunction. Brain-related illnesses affect more than two billion people worldwide, and the numbers are growing. Reducing this burden is a major challenge for society. The Centre for Doctoral Training in Neurotechnology for Life and Health will train a new generation of multidisciplinary researchers at the interface of neuroscience and engineering, to address this challenge. The Centre spans the Faculties of Engineering, Natural Sciences and Medicine at Imperial, with investigators from the Departments of Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computing, Chemistry, Physics, Life Sciences, and the Division of Brain Sciences. Directed by Dr Simon Schultz, Prof Bill Wisden and Prof Paul Matthews, it intends to admit approximately 14 students per year. All research projects will involve a team of supervisors, each of whom will bring complementary expertise to the project. In addition to researchers from across Imperial College, the Centre involves twenty industry and charity partners, as well as satellite research groups at the Crick Institute and the University of Oxford. Studentships begin with a one-year MRes in Neurotechnology, which forms an integral part of the four year training programme. "The Heisenberg Research Group of Computational Biology at the University of Cologne in Cologne, Germany announces a Research Position (100%, EG TV-L 13) in computational neuroscience for the duration of up to three years. The position is available in the externally funded project "Central pattern generators and reflexive feedback in insect locomotion: a cross-species study". Animal locomotion begins in the central nervous system and results in quantifiable mechanical activity; it therefore provides an excellent entry point into the neural computations that create intentional behaviors that respond to environmental conditions. Locomotion originates in central pattern generators: neural networks in the spinal cord of vertebrates and thoracic ganglia of insects which produce rhythmic movements. Some preparations (e.g. lamprey, crayfish) can generate stable, near-periodic rhythms in isolation, others require sensory feedback either to produce functional gaits or for the stabilization of the rhythms. Cockroaches and stick insects exemplify these two extremes. They share the same basic neural and biomechanical architecture, but the former run rapidly over rough ground, while the latter are adapted for slow walking on twigs and leaves with varying orientations with regard to gravity. Using existing information and collecting new data, this project will compare these species and address questions as described in the work plan. The development of integrated mathematical and computational models is central to answering such questions. New data will improve existing models, and new models will be created to span the morphological and behavioral ranges from stick insects to cockroaches, allowing us to illuminate their adaptive strategies to different environments. The objective of our research project is to deepen our understanding of the generation and control of locomotion. This collaborative project is performed jointly by the groups of Drs. These concepts can help to better understand the computational algorithms implemented by the dynamics of a neural system, and to provide the link between these algorithms and their biophysical implementation. Causality The analysis of causal interactions yields important insights into the biophysical substrate of neural dynamics that enable emergent computation. It is one of the goals of the workshop to discuss the link between causal analysis and the analyses of information processing proper, in order to clarify the dividing line and the mutual benefit of these two types of analyses. Large scale organisation and criticality Neural systems orchestrate the activity of an enormous number of interacting neurons to achieve their computational capabilities. Recent technological advances make it possible to record simultaneously from a large number of neurons. Here we explore recent developments in identifying large-scale organizing principles underlying computation in extended neural system.

Biomimetics is the development of novel technologies through the distillation of principles from the study of biological systems. The investigation of biomimetic systems can serve two complementary goals. First, a suitably designed and configured biomimetic artefact can be used to test theories about the natural system of interest. Second, biomimetic technologies can provide useful, elegant and efficient solutions to unsolved challenges in science and engineering. Biohybrid systems are formed by combining at least one biological component—an existing living system—and at least one artificial, newly-engineered component. By passing information in one or both directions, such a system forms a new hybrid bio-artificial entity. The following are some examples: • Biomimetic robots and their component technologies (sensors, actuators, processors) that can intelligently interact with their environments. • Active biomimetic materials and structures that self-organize and self-repair. • Biomimetic computers—neuromimetic emulations of the physiological basis for intelligent behaviour. • Biohybrid brain-machine interfaces and neural implants. • Artificial organs and body-parts including sensory organ-chip hybrids and intelligent prostheses. • Organism-level biohybrids such as robot-animal or robot-human systems. ACTIVITIES The main conference will take the form of a three-day single-track oral and poster presentation programme, 29th to 31st July 2015, hosted at the La Pedrera, Barcelona, Spain. The conference programme will include five plenary lectures from leading international researchers in biomimetic and biohybrid systems, and the demonstrations of state-of-the-art living machine technologies The full conference will be preceded by up to two days of Sateliite Events hosted by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. SUBMITTING TO LIVING MACHINES 2015 We invite both full papers and extended abstracts in areas related to the conference themes. All contributions will be refereed and accepted papers will appear in the Living Machines 2015 proceedings which we expect to be published in the Springer-Verlag LNAI Series. Full papers (upto 12 pages) are invited from researchers at any stage in their career but should present significant findings and advances in biomimetic or biohybid research; more preliminary work would be better suited to extended abstract submission (minimum 4 pages). Further details of submission formats will be circulated in an updated CfP and will be posted on the conference web-site. Full papers will be accepted for either oral presentation (single track) or poster presentation. Extended abstracts will be accepted for poster presentation only. Authors of the best full papers will be invited to submitted extended versions of their paper for publication in a special issue of Bioinspiration and Biomimetics. Olfactory Modeling Workshop

The National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) is now accepting applications for its Investigative Workshop, "Olfactory Modeling," to be held March 2-4, 2015, at NIMBioS. Objectives: The sense of smell is important for all animals; odors are associated with identifying and locating food, determining food quality, and identifying threats. In humans, loss of sense of smell occurs with normal aging and is associated with a loss in quality of life. A decline in the ability to detect and discriminate odors also can be a harbinger of neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. Moreover, the olfactory system is an important model system for exploring neural computation including changes in neural circuits in response to the environment and experience. The olfactory system provides specific advantages for understanding learning and memory, one of the most important goals in neuroscience. Technological advances have led to a wealth of information about how olfactory coding takes place in the mammalian nervous system, where experimental approaches range from large-scale measurement of neural activity during behavior to manipulation of activity via optogenetics. Integration of these data through comprehensive models of the neural networks involved in olfactory processing will advance our understanding of olfaction, including the relationship between neural activity and behavior. This workshop will review the current state of the mathematical approaches and tools for modeling olfaction, identify tasks that will maximize the impact of individual projects, and establish collaborations for large-scale modeling of this system, with a focus on incorporating realistic biophysical mechanisms for learning and memory. You will work on calcium imaging (2-photon) and electrophysiology recordings in mice as part of the research activities of the Centre for Systems Neuroscience. Research will be done in collaboration with the Department of Cell Pharmacology and Physiology (Ian Forsythe). The project aims to use a virtual navigation environment for the head restrained mice to record neuronal activity in the mouse hippocampus whilst the animal performs different tasks. The work will be performed in synergy with experiments done in humans (“concept cells”) to gain a deeper understanding of perception and memory processes. You will contribute to imaging and electrophysiology data collection and analysis, as well as the design of the experiments and overall setup of the system. In particular you will work on the development and optimization of advance methods for the analysis of the data. You will have, or be close to completing, a PhD in an area related to Neuroscience or signal processing (physics, mathematics, engineering, computer sciences). You will also have good programming skills, particularly in Matlab, and ideally you have experience in neurophysiology and imaging recording. Autism is a life-long developmental condition that affects how a person communicates and interacts with people. In addition to these social symptoms, autistic individuals have altered motor control such as less accurate eye-hand coordination and abnormal gait patterns causing considerable problems with daily living and social skills. Despite this impact, motor problems are poorly characterised. In this project, computational and statistical methods (e.g. feature extraction, machine learning) will be applied to movement data recorded from autistic and non-autistic people in order to address the following questions: Can motor ability differentiate between autistic and non- autistic groups? Can motor ability be used as a diagnostic marker for autism? Are there different subgroups of motor impairment present in the autistic population? POSITION: The group of Matthias Kaschube at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS) in Frankfurt, Germany, is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher or doctoral student who will develop and analyze a neural circuit model of mouse visual cortex development. This is for a newly funded joint project with the experimental group of Kenichi Ohki at Kyushu University in Japan. The position will emphasize theoretical and computational work, but an active engagement with neural data analysis is desired. Our aim in this project is to identify the changes in circuitry that underlay the reorganization of visual response properties in mouse visual cortex upon eye opening. The position is available immediately, for up to three years. LAB ENVIRONMENT: The work will be carried out primarily at FIAS, a research institution dedicated to fundamental theoretical research in various areas of science. FIAS hosts state-of-the-art facilities and has tight links to neuroscience centers at the Goethe University, the Max-Planck Institute for Brain Research and the Ernst Strüngmann Institute for Neuroscience. The city of Frankfurt is the hub of one of the most vibrant metropolitan areas in Europe and boasts a rich cultural community. Postdoc Position in Face Recognition with Attributes, at the University of Caen, France The Computer Vision group of the University of Caen (France) is opening a PhD position starting on the 1st of February 2015. Topic: We are interested in forensic investigation scenarios in which some persons of interest have to be identified using verbal descriptions provided by witnesses (e.g. gender, race, age, etc.). It is well known that, in general, variations in pose, illumination, occlusions, or expression makes face recognition in unconstraint environments very challenging. In this context, we aim at addressing simultaneously the two issues (searching subject by verbal description and building robust face description) by building semantic visual features of a face images that are insensitive to the aforementioned imaging variations and can be used for verbal searches. More precisely, we will investigate potential extensions of the recent works on this topic, such a [1,2,3,4,5,6]. This research will be carried within the context of the ANR/PHYSIONOMIE project; scientific collaborations with the MORPHO company as well as the INRIA/LEAR group are expected. Start date: the 1st of February 2015. Location: The position will be located at the Computer Vision group at the University of Caen. A 4 year post-doctoral research associate position is available to work on a European Council-funded project that will use psychophysics, eye tracking and EEG to investigate auditory attention. We aim to understand the brain mechanisms involved in selective attention, and create a brain-machine interface able to identify listeners attentional focus in real time. This research program is part of an international project ("Cognitively controlled Hearing Aid") which includes partners in ENS, France (Shihab Shamma, Alain de Cheveigne, Daniel Pressnitzer), DTU, Denmark (Torsten Dau), UZH, Switzerland (Shih-Chii Liu) and Oticon (Thomas Lunner) .
