We are looking for a postdoc at the Centre for Systems Neuroscience at the University of Leicester, UK. The candidate will work on the analysis and recording of neurophysiology data as part of the research activities of the Centre for Systems Neuroscience (www.le.ac.uk/csn). The project will investigate concept representations in the mice hippocampus, analogous to the type of concept representations we have described in the human hippocampus – what are known as concept cells (a.k.a. Jennifer Aniston neurons) – that means, neurons that selectively fire to specific concepts, like different pictures and the written or spoken name of a particular person (see e.g. Quian Quiroga et al, Nature 2005; Quian Quiroga Nature Reviews Neuroscience 2012; Quian Quiroga et al, Scientific American 2013). The successful candidate will contribute to the recording and, particularly, the analysis of the 2-photon imaging and electrophysiology data collected in head fixed mice performing tasks in a virtual reality setup. The synergy between the human and mice recordings aims at gaining a deeper understanding of type of neural representations used by different species for memory processes. The candidate will not only contribute to the collection and analysis of the data but also to the development and optimization of advance methods for its analysis. The candidate should have, or be close to completing, a PhD in an area related to Neuroscience or signal processing (physics, mathematics, engineering, computer sciences). She/He will also have excellent programming skills, particularly in Matlab, a very good background on signal processing and, ideally, experience in neurophysiology recordings.
